Wherever materials are treated and processed, large quantities of dust are generally produced. Depending on the material processed, this dust may include quartz or wood particles that can cause health hazards. Quartz dust can cause diseases such as silicosis, while asbestos dust as well as oak and beech dust are carcinogenic.

Apart from these health hazards, exposure to high concentrations of dust can cause irritations and diseases of the respiratory tract, skin, and eyes. These harmful effects depend on the following factors:

Note: Many manufacturers offer machinery with integrated dust-extraction features or systems that combine tools and portable dust extractors to keep dust exposure to a minimum. However, in these cases the actually achieved reduction in dust exposure depends essentially on how well the systems operate together. Unaligned systems involve significant disadvantages where the collection and separation of dust is concerned.
