Congratulations to the 12 boys and girls who qualified and attended the Hastings Camden Haven Swimming Carnival last Thursday. Our School Parliament Leadership Team were inducted at last Friday’s assembly and were presented their badges by a community representative, Chris Roelandts (Hollisdale RFS Captain). We thank Chris for his attendance and most importantly for the time and work that he and his crew devote to protecting our community. Thank you to those parents who came along to last Wednesday’s ‘Meet the Teacher’ Night. Hopefully this was an opportunity for you to develop a partnership with your child’s new teacher and to learn more about your child’s class organisation for this year. Mrs Small is working tirelessly to organise Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Personalised Learning Pathway (PLP) meetings involving parents/carers and teachers of targeted students. For those parents/carers involved in these, this is another opportunity for you to work with our teachers to support your child’s ongoing progress at Beechwood PS. At various times throughout the year, all of our teachers will be released from class to participate in professional learning designed to enhance teacher quality and student learning. We know from research, that the most effective way to build teacher capacity, which in turn impacts on student outcomes and success at school, is for them to establish goals, share strategies, plan together and learn from each other. Not only does this have a great impact on student learning, but it also enables us to develop greater consistency between classes and across our school. Our end goal is to have the highest possible impact on every student’s learning, through high impact teaching practices. While our teachers are released (K-2 on one day, 3-6 teachers on another day), wherever possible we will endeavour to employ casual teachers who are familiar to our school and our students, and class programs are continued as usual. Congratulations and thanks to the new executive members listed hereunder, for accepting leadership roles of the parent body thus ensuring support for the school continues. Building Capacity for Quality Teaching in Australian Schools Information for Parents and Carers

I am pleased to confirm that our school will be participating in an exciting new research project on teacher professional development. The research is being undertaken by the University of Newcastle, commencing in Term 1, 2020. Children from 3/4S and 4/5S have been invited to participate in this project, along with Mr Small and Miss Sherlock. Invitations were sent out to these classes yesterday. Participating students will complete some surveys and assessments as part of their usual school activities. All names will be removed and only student numbers will be given to the research team so that they can link survey and assessment results with NAPLAN and school attendance data. If you do not want the research team to have access to these data, you can opt-out on your child’s behalf. For further information about the research, please visit the research website at www.newcastle.edu.au/QTR or call the research team on (02) 49854300.

If we get a few helpers it may mean only having to come in once a term. Ethics classes at Beechwood Public School

Dear Parents and Carers, Could you be an ethics teacher for Beechwood Public School? We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children. Currently, we are only able to provide ethics classes to Years 1,2,5 and 6. Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two-day workshop and short online modules. An Ethics Teacher Training Two-Day Workshop is scheduled to be held in Port Macquarie on 4th and 5th April 2020. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available between 9am and 10am each Wednesday of school term. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Children discuss topics such as:

- imagining how others feel. - how do we treat living things? - what is laziness? - how do we disagree in a respectful way? - fairness. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au and/or contact Fiona Branscombe, Program Office at Primary Ethics on 0438 134 124. Regards, Tracey Bromfield Relieving Principalp
