Third Sunday of Lent (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection “WHAT SIGN CAN YOU SHOW US FOR DOING THIS?” (JN 2:18).

Signs. We all want them. It seems that we are never satisfied with what we see or hear, and always require more proof to be convinced of something. The sign Jesus offers is His own body: “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up”, He answers referring, as the evangelist tells us, to “the temple of His body” (2:21). Yes! The resurrection is the final and greatest sign, as St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:14, if Christ has not risen, our faith is in vain.

Our world is also looking for signs. And the only sign we can and must offer is Christ crucified: “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:24). As Pope Benedict XVI said in 2009, let us remember that we “have nothing to propose or give to those we meet, except Christ and the Good News of his cross.” In the words of the Pope emeritus, we “do not pursue economic, social or political objectives; [we] proclaim Christ, certain that the Gospel can move the hearts of all and transform them” (Angelus, March 15, 2009).

As we come to the midpoint of Lent, let us ask the Lord to move us to conversion and to transform our hearts in the pattern of His own Sacred Heart. Again, my thanks to the 144 families who have pledged to the ABCD, and an invitation to those who haven’t to make it part of your Lenten observance. God bless you.

“¿QUÉ SEÑAL NOS PRESENTAS PARA ACTUAR DE ESTE MODO?” (JN 2,18)

Señales, signos. Todos los buscamos. Nunca estamos satisfechos con lo que vemos y oímos; siempre pedimos más pruebas para quedar convencidos de algo. Y el signo, la señal que Jesús nos ofrece es Su propio cuerpo: “Destruyan este santuario y en tres días lo reconstruiré”, aludiendo, nos dice el evangelista, al “santuario de Su cuerpo” (2,21). ¡Sí! La resurreción es el último y el mayor signo de todos, pues como dice San Pablo en la 1a. Carta a los Corintios 15,14, si Cristo no ha resucitado es vana nuestra fe.

Nuestro mundo también busca signos. Y el único que podemos y debemos ofrecerle es Cristo crucificado: “Cristo que es fuerza de Dios y sabiduría de Dios” (1Cor 1,24). Como dijera el Papa Benedicto XVI en 2009, recordemos que no tenemos “nada que proponer o dar a aquellos con los que me encuentre si no es Cristo y la buena nueva de su cruz”. En palabras del Papa emérito, “no perseguimos objetivos económicos, sociales o políticos; la Iglesia anuncia a Cristo, convencida de que el Evangelio puede tocar el corazón de todos y transformarlo” (Angelus del 15 de marzo de 2009).

Al llegar a la mitad de la Cuaresma, pidamos al Señor que nos mueva a la conversión y que transforme nuestros corazones según el modelo de Su Sagrado Corazón. Una vez más, gracias a las 144 familias que han hecho su compromiso con el ABCD y una invitación a los demás para que lo hagan parte de su observancia cuaresmal. Que Dios los bendiga.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa Lenten Message 2021

“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem” (Mt 20:18). LENT: A TIME FOR RENEWING FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE

Jesus was speaking of the future opened up by the Father’s mercy. Hoping with him and because of him means believing that history does not end with our mistakes, our violence and injustice, or the sin that crucifies Love. It means receiving from his open heart the Father’s forgiveness.

Lent is precisely the season of hope, when we turn back to God who patiently continues to care for his creation which we have often mistreated (cf. Laudato Si’, 32-33; 43-44). Saint Paul urges us to place our hope in reconciliation: “Be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20). By receiving forgiveness in the sacrament that lies at the heart of our process of conversion, we in turn can spread forgiveness to others. Having received forgiveness ourselves, we can offer it through our willingness to enter into attentive dialogue with others.

In Lent, may we be increasingly concerned with “speaking words of comfort, strength, consolation and encouragement, and not words that demean, sadden, anger or show scorn” (Fratelli Tutti, 223). In order to give hope to others, it is sometimes enough simply to be kind, to be “willing to set everything else aside in order to show interest, to give the gift of a smile, to speak a word of encouragement, to listen amid general indifference” (ibid., 224)

To experience Lent in hope entails growing in the realization that, in Jesus Christ, we are witnesses of new times, in which God is “making all things new” (cf. Rev 21:1-6). It means receiving the hope of Christ, who gave his life on the cross and was raised by God on the third day, and always being “prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls [us] to account for the hope that is in [us]” (1 Pet 3:15).

CUARESMA: UN TIEMPO PARA RENOVAR LA FE, LA ESPERANZA Y LA CARIDAD

Jesús nos habla del futuro que la misericordia del Padre ha abierto de par en par. Esperar con Él y gracias a Él quiere decir creer que la historia no termina con nuestros errores, nuestras violencias e injusticias, ni con el pecado que crucifica al Amor. Significa saciarnos del perdón del Padre en su Corazón abierto.

El tiempo de Cuaresma está hecho para esperar, para volver a dirigir la mirada a la paciencia de Dios, que sigue cuidando de su Creación, mientras que nosotros a menudo la maltratamos (cf. Carta enc. Laudato si’, 32-33;43-44). Es esperanza en la reconciliación, a la que san Pablo nos exhorta con pasión: «Os pedimos que os reconciliéis con Dios» (2 Co 5,20). Al recibir el perdón, en el Sacramento que está en el corazón de nuestro proceso de conversión, también nosotros nos convertimos en difusores del perdón.

En la Cuaresma, estemos más atentos a «decir palabras de aliento, que reconfortan, que fortalecen, que consuelan, que estimulan», en lugar de «palabras que humillan, que entristecen, que irritan, que desprecian» (Carta enc. Fratelli tutti [FT], 223). A veces, para dar esperanza, es suficiente con ser «una persona amable, que deja a un lado sus ansiedades y urgencias para prestar atención, para regalar una sonrisa, para decir una palabra que estimule, para posibilitar un espacio de escucha en medio de tanta indiferencia» (ibíd., 224).

Vivir una Cuaresma con esperanza significa sentir que, en Jesucristo, somos testigos del tiempo nuevo, en el que Dios “hace nuevas todas las cosas” (cf. Ap 21,1-6). Significa recibir la esperanza de Cristo que entrega su vida en la cruz y que Dios resucita al tercer día, “dispuestos siempre para dar explicación a todo el que nos pida una razón de nuestra esperanza” (cf. 1 P 3,15).

Daylight Saving Time starts next Sunday, March 14. Remember to set your clocks forward one hour. Daylight Saving Time will end Sunday, November 7. In celebration of the year of St. Joseph holy Mass for the various intentions of our parish community will be offered through his intercession during the month of March. Let us join in prayer. Consecration to St. Joseph will take place on his feast day, March 19. There will be a bilingual Mass at 12 noon, and a Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Liturgy (traditional Latin Mass) at 7 pm in celebration of this solemnity. Those preparing for the consecration may make it at either of these Masses. Please sign up as you would for Sunday Mass. La consagración a San José tendrá lugar el 19 de marzo, día de su fiesta. Para celebrar esta solemnidad se celebrará una misa bilingüe a las 12 del mediodía y otra misa usando la Forma Extraordinaria de la Liturgia Romana, en latín, a las 7 pm. As part of our Lenten observance the parish will hold bilingual Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent at 6:30 pm. Marriage Covenant will lead the Stations on Friday, March 12. Como parte de nuestra observancia cuaresmal la parroquia celebrará el Viacrucis bilingüe todos los viernes de Cuaresma a las 6:30 pm. El grupo Marriage Covenant dirigirá el Via Crucis el viernes 12 de marzo.

During Lent there will be a Holy Hour of Adoration after the morning Mass Monday through Thursday. Stations of the Cross, in English, will be prayed on Fridays after the morning Mass whenever possible. Durante la Cuaresma habrá una Hora Santa de Adoración después de la misa de la mañana de lunes a jueves. Los viernes se rezará el Via Crucis en inglés después de la misa, cuando sea posible.

Confessions will be heard at the usual time, 4:30 pm on Saturdays, as well as during the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturdays and the 9 am, 10:30 am and 12:30 pm Masses on Sundays.
