and with it, David Sainton’s house. Inside one of our child-friendly spaces, the boy drew a vision for the future.

Despite the devastation surrounding him, that vision was as bright as David’s crayons. His picture showed a tall house,

sturdy, warm and welcoming. Home.

French author Victor Hugo wrote about clear visions for bright futures. Although threatened by dark forces from all sides, he noted,

such a future is in no more danger than “a star in the jaws of the clouds.”

For World Vision, this year was about seeing that star through the clouds, and moving toward it with unyielding focus. Without that focus and our Christian commitment, it would have been tough to persevere. Our responses in Haiti and Pakistan have been—and continue to be—some of the most difficult we’ve undertaken.

Yet thanks to you, we were able to provide the necessities of life to hundreds of thousands of children and families affected by the earthquake in Haiti and floods in Pakistan. Meanwhile, we found a sponsor for our 500,000th child, ensuring a growing number of boys and girls have a chance at that bright future through sponsorship. And we worked with other humanitarian organizations to influence the direction of the G8 Muskoka Summit, saving the lives of millions of young children and pregnant women through simple health measures.

When you give to World Vision, you trust us with your own vision for children like ten-year-old David. You expect that we’ll maximize your gift for the greatest possible impact. And you count on clear, transparent information about how we did that. That’s what this Annual Report is all about.

On behalf of children around the world, we thank you for your faith in bright futures ultimately realized—no matter what the challenges.

In Niger, six-year-old Mariama (right, top) suffered from a water-borne illness that threatened to blind her. As part of our development work, World Vision built a pump in her community to provide clean water and critical medical care to restore her vision.

In El Salvador, young children like three-year-old Danny (right, second) are fortified for strong futures through early childhood nutrition and education programs.

In Pakistan, seven-year-old Baswari (right, third) is one of some 5,000 children working on the streets of her city. Canadian donors fund a drop-in centre where child labourers can rest, play and learn. Around the world, World Vision advocates for changes to unjust labour laws and practices.

In the Philippines, ten-year-old Angelica (right, bottom) was in danger of leaving school to help support her family. Now, thanks to child sponsorship, Angela is in school and dreaming of becoming a teacher.
