We are just moving right along into 2020, as well as moving right along with our Winter Membership Drive. We are at 23 new Winter Members. This is fantastic! Hoping that many decide to make Clearwater Yacht Club their perma-nent home. Let’s all try to make our new members feel welcomed and included. Again, I would like to thank all of those who have referred prospec-tive members to our club. Without you we could not continue to grow!

February brings some exciting events to CYC. First is our annual Valentine’s Dinner Dance. This year it falls on the actual day; no need to worry about taking your sweetheart to an overcrowded restaurant. Make your reservations to spend Valentine’s here at CYC. Then there is also the annual Chowdah (or Chowder for some) Challenge. Come show off your family’s famous recipe or create a new one. This is a fabulous event at our dry dock. Keep a watch on Constant Contact for all event details.

Please remember that the Membership Committee isn’t just about recruiting new members, but also re-tention of our current members. If you ever have any ideas, questions, suggestions or concerns, I encourage and welcome all members to come to a Membership meeting or send me an email at [email protected]. We meet the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room.

By amie Crosby, Membership Chairman

Good NeWs! 2020 is a Leap Year! That means an extra day to enjoy our great club with friends and family. While you’re at it, take a mo-ment to look for the pineapple flag and welcome our many new winter members to the club family. Show them why they should join us full time.

February 2 starts off the month with a bang at our Super Bowl Party. Every TV in the house will be tuned to the game, so plan on joining us, rain or shine! February 14 is the ever important Valentine’s Dinner Dance. Be sure and get your reservations in early so you don’t miss out. Sunday, February 16, we’ll have another excuse to gather as we delight in the tastes of the Chowdah Challenge. The competition gets tougher every year, so if you think you’ve got a killer recipe, bring it down and let us be the judge!

An important function each year is the Laser Mid-Winters. We have activities beginning Wednesday, February 19, and continuing through Sunday, February 23. Don’t miss the opportunity to see our future cham-pions in action and support other club participants by volunteering. Pretty much every day we’re open there’s something happening. I encourage each of you to check the calendar and participate in any committee meeting or activity that sparks your interest. The more members who are involved, the better our club will be.

If you have suggestions for the club, whether it’s a menu item you’d like to see (or maybe one we previ-ously had but discontinued), an idea for a weekend activity or a comment about the facilities, please email Tom, Virginia or me, and we’ll make sure it gets to the appropriate committee.

Evelyn and I are looking forward to seeing you all around the club!

We’re gathering in the Grille on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. for drinks and blather, 7 p.m. for dinner. The next Sailors’ Table will be February 26.

What a Great year we just had, and with the Change of Watch and new leader-ship, I feel we’re ready for a terrific New Year!

We are moving our Waterside meeting to the last Wednesday of the month. We will meet February 26. I hope to see a lot of you there. We have some pressing and interesting business to discuss. I would welcome your involvement and feedback.

We’re trying to maintain our aging docks to the best of our ability as various problems arise. Also, with the tourist sea-son on top of us, we need to be aware of our neighbors. Let’s be sure everyone knows where they’re supposed to be. This is a private club, and some need to respect those boundaries as we protect our docks and boats.

Thanks for your help, and I’ll see you at the Waterside meeting!

YachtingFor will anyone dare to tell me that

business is more entertaining than fooling among boats? He must have never seen a boat, or never seen an office, who says so.

Robert Louis Stevenson

The holidays are slowly dipping below the horizon in our wake. The new decade has begun. And the Yachting Committee’s thoughts turn to the Laser Mid-Winter East regatta.

VOLUNTEERS, PLEASE!

The Laser Midwinter regatta is February 19–23. There are both landside and waterside opportunities for volun-teers. We always need people who are willing and able to volunteer their center console boats. We also have a strong need for one or two more RIBs (around 18 feet long and with 70 or more HP.)

We are co-hosting three separate Sunfish regat-tas (March 14–22) with the CCSC. People who are able to volunteer their boats and their time for these events are always appreciated. There are landside as well as waterside opportunities for volunteers.

Once again, the Yachting Committee is sponsoring its Race Committee 101 seminar February 1. This is open to anyone who wants to learn about how to run a sail-

boat race and what to expect. As always, we will be look-ing to shanghai as many participants as we can to help out with our regattas.

Anyone who has an interest in helping out with our Race Committee efforts, please do not hesitate to e-mail: [email protected].

CYC Yachting supported the Clearwater Community Sailing Center’s 420 regatta January 25-26. We will also support the Contender class Midwinter regatta January 31- February 2. If you want to spend a fun couple of days on the water, perfecting your Race Committee skills or learning more, please call Justin Ahern, at CCSC (727-515-9018) and let him know you are interested.

The February Sunset Cruise will be Saturday February 15. Meet at the Tiki Hut at 5:15 p.m. or so. Venus will be about 10 degrees up in the western sky at sunset, and you may be able to pick out Mercury very low on the horizon. We could always use a few more boats!

God Save the Poor Sailor!

happy valentine’s dayWhat the world needs now, is love, sweet love; it’s the

only thing that there’s just too little of.Jackie DeShannon’s hit song still resonates today, but long

before it topped the charts in 1965, Valentine’s Day spread the good news of love in the hearts and homes of the western world.

While there are several traditions sur-rounding the origins of Valentine’s Day, many trace it back to one of the early martyrs of the Christian Church, Valentine of Rome, This particular Valentine was a priest who devoted his life to helping soldiers and caring for those in prison. While little is known concern-ing the details of his life, the story goes that in 296 AD, he was arrested because of his faith, and during his trial, he healed the blind daughter of the judge who was trying the

case. Shortly before his death, he sent the young girl whose sight had been restored a farewell note of encouragement and signed it “Your Valentine.” Pope Gelasius the First set the date of February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day in the year 496, and over the course of many centuries, that day continues the custom of sharing “Valentine’s” notes and gifts with those we love.

However, I suspect that if the real St. Valentine were among us today, then perhaps he would encourage us to listen once again to the words sung by Jackie DeShannon back in 1965 because St Valentine’s life of love was never limited to once a year. Accord-ing to legend, he was arrested and put to death—not because of a single act of love—but because of a lifetime of compassion and mercy directed not merely toward those he held most dear, but also to the poor, prisoners, strangers and all those in need of hope, healing, compassion and love.

This Valentine’s Day might be a good time to remember that what the world needs now might not simply be another box of chocolates, a night out on the town or a Hallmark card. “What the world needs now is love.....No not just for some, but for every-one;” and the gifts of love we may all be most in need of are the ones that truly come from the heart: words of kindness, acts of mercy and generosity, gestures of pa-tience, a willingness to listen, and a readiness to forgive. These are the lasting gifts which lie at the very heart of St Valentine’s Day, and then as now, they have the potential to bring hope and healing our way, and in so doing to change the world for good.Happy Valentine’s Day!

hI everYoNe,The Cruisers just returned in time

to beat the cold front and get in this letter for the Compass. On our January trip, six boats set off for the Tampa Convention Center Marina, two for the Marriott Resort Marina and two for the Point Marina at Harbour Island.

Our hosts for this trip were Phil and Richie Shaw. Richie came up with a novel idea to make our normal Thursday dock party a progres-sive event, going to everyone’s boat for a signature drink and hors d’oeuvres. Just to make it more fun, there was a competi-tion with awards for the best drink and the best appetizer. Our winners were Jay Coats

for his wonderful appetizer and Gary Newcom for his dangerous “Baby Guinness” drinks.

Friday, during the day, was free time. At night our group met at the Improv Comedy Club for dinner and en-

tertainment. Saturday was a trip to Splitsville for some bowling and lunch. We finished off the night with reser-vations at Bernini’s in Ybor City.

Another great trip in Tampa, thanks to the Shaws! Now we are off to Westshore Yacht Club in South Tampa for February and a trip to St. Petersburg in March.

Everyone is always invited to our monthly meetings in the dry

dock every second Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

suPerBoWL suNdaY opens the month of February! The fun begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 2. We’ll have our killer football menu—wings, dogs, ribs, nachos—you name it! We’re hoping the weather is perfect for us to party downstairs, but if not, we’ll simply come upstairs as we did years ago to watch the big game. And that football pool...count on it! $10 gets you a chance to win $200 or $400! Last year we started a 2nd football pool, so bring plenty of cash and buy a square…or many!

Now’s the time to reserve your table for our

VaLEnTinE’S DinnER DanCE. We usually have this party the Saturday before the actual holiday, but this year the 14th falls on a Friday, so we’ll change up the format a bit. We’ll still feature our full menu, and Chef John is also offering some great, top-end dinner spe-cials: surf & turf, twin lobster tails, king crab legs, rack of lamb…you get the idea! Yes, we’ll still have that fabu-lous prime rib, so call now for your table. The music that night will be provided by one of our favorites, JR. Best bet is to wear your most comfortable shoes since he always keeps the dance floor packed!

There are only a few club parties in which members cook

and bring their best recipes. One of the favorites is our annual CHOWDAH CHALLENGE! Hosted by Helen Correia once again, this year it will Sunday, Feb. 16. Dust off those recipes and enter yours now! You can start setting up at 1 p.m., and the tasting begins at 2 p.m. We’ll have prizes for Most Unique, Best Decorations and Best Overall.

Would you like to be part of a world-class Race

Committee with an international reputation for excellence in race management? Our biggest regatta begins with registration beginning February 19. We will need over 70 volunteers to help—on the water in the Gulf of Mexico and landside at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. It’s a four-day regatta and an Olympic qualifier, so if you are able to help on any or all days, it would be much appreciated—and you’ll have fun doing it! We’re conducting another training class February 1: Race Committee 101. It’s free to attend. You’ll learn lots about what we do, and we’ll even feed you after the class! Join us for 0830 coffee & pastries, 0900 meeting, 1200 buffet lunch.

As always, details to follow for all parties—cost, time,

location and the like. The important thing is to call or email now and make your reservations, so you don’t miss out!

and fun for you this month, so mark your calendar and plan to be at CYC!

First, it’s a tailgate-style Super Bowl Party with stadium food, games, huge prizes and more! We’ll have

the big screens and the boards ready to go. Don’t miss our Smooth Jazz Sunday with an

amazing buffet & Bloody Mary bar 10am-2pm, Next, our Valentine’s Day eve-ning is a dress to impress event with dinner and dancing. Also, the 2020

Chowdah Challenge is simply a culinary experi-ence. You’ll taste and judge some of CYC’s best member recipes with prizes for all categories!

Finally, come aboard for a Tropix cruise right from our own marina, as we party the intracoastal waterway. This is a limited seating event and requires reservations in advance.

Don’t forget, CYC has the best Friday night prime rib in town with music for dancing. Be sure to check the Compass for even more events, including Bingo and Trivia nights.

HouSE and GRouNDSWoW! We had 18 people come to the first 2020 meeting of the House and Grounds Committee. It’s great to see so many of our members who care about our club. The purpose of the meeting was to determine what projects would be undertaken over this next year.

The committee reviewed the results of an inspection of the facilities, considered suggestions from the member-ship and then added more possible projects. The list was quite long. After serious consideration, the committee determined that the number one priority was remodel-ing the dry dock ladies’ restroom.

We will be looking at other projects and seeing what fits into the club budget. Keep your eye on this column as we work to make Clearwater Yacht Club even better.

Have you wanted to tell the CYC Board what you think about our fine club? You’ll be getting a chance to ex-press your opinion through a survey that will be sent out soon. If you have any suggestions for what to include in the survey, talk to me, Rear Commodore Gregory Crist or Membership Chair Amie Crosby.

See you around the club!
