A reminder: don't forget to check the web site periodi-cally for rides and, if you wish to lead an impromptu ride, make sure you check the web site first. If your ride is simi-lar, you should not announce your ride to the Yahoo Group. If your ride is different by a couple of measures, by all means post it. At the same time, it's a nice touch to give a plug for the club's scheduled ride.

Bikeways Grants Awarded To Frederick

Governor O’Malley has officially announced the first round of Bikeways grant awards . See the full press release and the project list here: http://www.mdot.maryland.gov/News/2012/March%202012/GOVERNOR%20OMALLEY%20ANNOUNCES%20THE%20FIRST%20BIKEWAYS%20GRANT%20WINNERS.

MDOT and SHA will be following up with each of the project sponsors to develop detailed project scopes and cost estimates in order to prepare grant agreements. The funding levels noted on the project list are provisional – we expect that the funding levels for each award may change slightly as the scope details are worked out with each sponsor. We hope to see these projects get underway as soon as possible, so we will be doing our best to work through any kinks in setting up this new program quickly!

Best regards,

Kate R. Sylvester

G r e a t news for cy-clists. On the way back f r o m C h u b b y ' s today we passed through Lewistown and found that the general store has reopened. It is now called: "Fishing Creek General Store " and is run by Scott and Tracy. The new owners are very anx-ious to serve the cycling public.

They pointed out the en-ergy bars they were selling and said to just let them know whatever else we would like to see stocked. Fig Newtons were sug-gested and they indicated that they would start carrying them. Scott also indicated that they wanted to carry spare tubes and we gave he the low down on the size to get.

This is a vast improve-ment over the old owner-ship, that went out of busi-ness. You can contact Scott & Tracy at: 301-898-7141, 11204 Hessong Bridge Road, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Stuart’s Next Great Adventure—Madrid to Lisbon in September

The next bike tour will be, point to point, from Madrid, Spain to Lisbon, Portugal. The route will be through Castille and Leon, through Portugal, to the coast. Then along the coast, south to Lis-bon. It's about 450 to 500 miles. I am planning for 2 weeks or so in September 2012. Flying my bike with me, I travel self contained and stay in pensions and hostels, no camping. Also, I hope to ar-range stays in "Warm Showers" hospitality homes. Other than head-ing east, there are no set routes and no set daily mileage. Just cy-cling to where ever seems interesting.

I have been to Spain before but not this area. Portugal will be new. If you are interested in coming along, let me know.

Stuart

Pardon the Interruption and allow this once a year post :-) regarding my involvement with Maryland Chapter of the MS Soci-

ety and the Chesapeake Challenge biking event.

The weather is getting warmer. The days are getting longer. The Christmas and New Year holidays are behind us. And sadly, still no cure for Multiple Sclerosis. Whether your last year was one of joy, challenge or loss, remember, that there are those struggling everyday with the simple things; the things we take for granted.

This past Fall, I attended the MD MS Annual Meeting representing Team CardioSmart as the Fundraising Team of the Year. One of the eye openers for me was to see that more than 50% of the Maryland's Chapter revenue comes from the bike and walk events each year! More than 50%! About 4 times the State Funding that they receive. This is how important the Chesapeake Challenge is to the MD MS Society. To that end, I have set some very loft goals for Team CardioSmart in 2012. These goals are simply

30 Team Members -- we currently have 35!

$30,000 Raised for MD MS- we are less than half-way to this goal.

This would help Team CardioSmart raise more than $100,000 for MD MS Society in the past 5 years

Even though the Chesapeake Challenge is not until June, monies are needed all year. Please consider that monies raised now are used immediately by the MD Chapter to help families in Maryland. I am asking you to help as Team CardioSmart gears up for its 5th year of participation in the Chesapeake Challenge offered by the National MS Society, Maryland Chapter. Please help make this the best fund-raising year yet for the Society!

I am often asked why I ride each year. Imagine being a high school football star and being recruited to play football at the collegiate level. Then imagine playing on a collegiate team that was one of the best teams that University ever had put on the field. You were playing alongside athletes that went on to not only play in the NFL, but who excelled at their positions and became NFL Champions and who are among the best to ever play those positions. Now, imagine having to give yourself frequent injections, imagine not being able to walk with-out difficulty and with the assistance of a cane. Multiple Sclerosis knows no boundaries; Multiple Sclerosis does not discriminate.

I know this first hand as my brother-in-law has been fighting the disease for a number of years. My brother-on-law was that star athlete that played a sport at its highest level. A level that very few of us are ever able to experience.

This is why I ride. This is why I train. This is why I ride 150 miles in two days. This is why I raise money for the Maryland MS Society.

I know that a cure may not be found in time to help him, but I do know this; a cure will be found. Maybe not in 2012, maybe not by 2015, but one will be found.

Please help Team CardioSmart exceed a total of $100,000 raised to fight MS. Remember, your donation is tax deductible. If you do-nated to Team CardioSmart in previous years, I thank you for your support and ask you to consider another donation for the 2012 fund-raising campaign. If you have given towards the 2012 fundraising campaign, thank you very much.

Please visit http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/raimist2012 to make a secure, online donation. You can also send a check, made pay-able to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, to my address 324 Copper Oaks Drive Woodsboro Maryland 21798. I will ensure that your contribution is credited appropriately.

Thank you in advance and I will keep you updated on Team CardioSmart.

David Raimist, Team CardioSmart Team Captain

Koman’s Ride—March 31

(Koman Nambiar)

9:30 I arrive at Ballenger Middle. No Pedaler in sight?

9:40 Mark Seymour arrives; I am relieved this Club ride is a GO! 9:45 Tim Bender pulls in after a 40 mile motor car drive from Carroll county. Talk about having faith, especially after the weatherman had predicted a 30 to 60% chance for AM showers. 9:50 Matt Seibert arrives and gets ready. 10:07 the Four Musketeers are heading south on Ballenger Creek Pike. 10:47 Jeff Johnson and Dough Tipperman catch up with us at the Jefferson. Now the ride is cooking. The roads are desert dry, the sun is coming out and the sky is turning, well, sky blue. Onto to Lander on the C & O canal, we loop around and come back to Jefferson, climb Mount-ville road making a controlled descent and begin the loop around Adamstown. Here Jeff "Good Sa-maritan" Johnson insisted we have a roadside class on replacement of the rear inner tube, after which we continued on our wonderful ride. Doug recommends a route change to see more country and incorporate traffic avoidance so we deviate from the cue sheet to take Cap Stine and Renn roads before heading back to BCMS for a 32 mile fun ride with 2250 ft of climbing as recorded on Mark's computer. Thanks to all for coming out despite the gloomy statements by the weatherman whose prediction

was not quite applicable for this Club Ride.

Ride to George’s House—March 27 (Harry DeMoll)

Just Dottie and I showed up for the "Ride to George's House" yesterday. It was a rather cold start with temperatures in the 30's in Frederick. But it warmed up by noon time and we ate lunch at Mt. Vernon outdoors. When we stopped at Olde Towne Alexandria for hot chocolate on the way down, we found that the food court next to the Torpedo Factory has been closed; so we headed further down Union Street and found a nice little coffee shop. On the way by, after crossing over the Beltway and riding down the main street in Alexandria we met a woman and learned that by taking South Royal Street, which parallels Union, cyclists can get under the Beltway and avoid the main street through Alexandria. Dottie kept track of mileage at critical turning points and has suggested that I draw up a cue for the ride; which I plan on doing. Upon arriving back at Vienna we ate dinner at Fosters Grill. With yesterday ride, I now have 437 miles for the year; not bad for the winter.

New Bicycle Safety Laws Go Into Effect in PA

(Since we frequently ride into Pennsylvania, this may be of interest to our member-ship.)

From the York (PA) Daily Record—JOE STAFFORD (director of the Bicycle Access Council) 04/02/2012 (article has been edited)

The benefit of the new bicycle safety law is not only to increase the margin of safety for bicyclists, but also for law enforcement officers who must interpret the Ve-hicle Code as it applies to all vehicles - bicycles have always been included as legitimate vehicles on the road. Now, motor vehicle drivers will also benefit by having defined standards for passing and interacting with bicyclists. The statutes regarding how to share the road are more clear and understandable than previously under Act 3 of 2012.

The intent of the new law is pretty clear. Recognize bicyclists as part of the transportation mix and follow some basic rules of the road to ensure the safety for all. Here are the few key elements that will stand out and reinforce good driver behavior:

Bicyclists shall keep to the right unless it's unsafe to do so for certain conditions.

Those conditions could include road hazards, such as broken edge pavement, sewer grates, glass and debris. This has always been a provision of the law. It's now repeated in another section for emphasis.

The new law also allows bicyclists to take any lane position deemed to be safe by the cyclist when there is only one travel lane in one direction. Since roadways vary in width, from 8 to 14 feet, it may not be possible to pass by a bicyclist safely within the lane, which also depends on the speeds of each. Now, bicyclists may "control the lane" while maintaining whatever speed is appropriate for that bicycle and terrain. Reasons to stay well into the lane may be for allowing a safety area from the "door zone" of parked cars or other fixed objects.

Any motor vehicle overtaking a bicyclist properly on the left shall allow at least 4 feet distance from the bicyclist. This is a sufficient minimum margin of safety to ensure a bicyclist won't be affected by passing so close as to be struck by a vehicle, or a vehicle mirror. Trucks, especially large trucks, create an unsafe draft that easily can cause a bicyclist to lose balance. The old sport rule "no harm, no foul" does not apply here when it comes to roadway safety.

To achieve the minimum 4 feet overtaking distance, motorists may now legally cross a center line when safe to do so - even in a no-passing zone. All other existing rules of the road must be followed regarding overtaking vehi-cles: not to be done on the crest of a hill, or on a curve; not within 100 feet of an intersection or bridge; and not if it interferes with oncoming traffic in the next lane.

The new law includes a provision to prohibit a motor vehicle from making turns abruptly into or across the path of a bicyclist proceeding straight - this is known to bicyclists as a "right hook" that usually occurs when a motor vehicle operator misjudges the speed of a bicyclist or assumes the bicyclist must yield. To comply, motorists should stay well behind a bicyclist going forward and make turning movements into driveways or alleys once the bicyclist has passed that point.

Bicyclists do not have to move off the roadway if going "slower than prevailing" speed if traveling at a reasonable speed for a bicycle under the conditions. All traffic law is based on "first come, first served." That bicyclist in front of you is not taking up your space.

Bicyclists also need to be reminded that the law is for all. Follow all traffic laws and obey all traffic control devices - don't ignore red lights or blow through stop signs. Take your turn in lines of traffic and ride predictably.

Bicyclists should also read and educate themselves about skills needed to be a competent cyclist found in the Pennsylvania Bicycle Driver's Manual (PennDOT pub 380), which may be obtained free at driver license centers and legislators' offices. It's also available online at the PennDOT website.

The Pennsylvania Driver Manual will soon be revised to reflect the Bicycle Safety Law, as well as the recent laws on texting bans and new requirements for teen driving. That driver manual has a thoughtful reminder inside the cover - driving is a privilege, not a right.

Sharing the road with all vehicles should be considered part of that privilege, and when we bear that in mind, the new bicycle safety law is an easy act to follow.

Face of America Ride Registration Underway

It has been a busy winter as participants from across the country are

registering daily for one of Maryland’s most inspiring recreational

bicycle rides, the Face of America from World T.E.A.M. Sports.

To be held this April 28-29, the Face of America provides an opportu-

nity for disabled veterans to ride with able-bodied civilians, active

duty and retired military. From a start near the Pentagon in suburban

Washington to the ending in the historic battlefields of Gettysburg,

Pennsylvania, the Face of America is a fully-supported ride leisurely

traveling 110 miles in two days. Participants receive a commemora-

tive jersey at registration on April 27, along with a gala dinner Friday

evening and a celebratory outdoor lunch in Gettysburg at the Sunday

afternoon conclusion.

This year’s outdoor lunch will be the final Face of America “steaks

and beers” at Corporal Jim “Seamus” Garrahy’s Black Horse Tavern

Road farm. Corp. Garrahy passed unexpectedly January 9 of cancer,

leaving a hole in the World T.E.A.M. Sports family of supporters and sponsors. This year’s ride is dedicated to the

memory of the Corporal, who was a strong supporter and host of the Face of America from 2008 through last

year’s ride.

The Face of America is World T.E.A.M. Sports’ most popular event, attracting up to 500 participants and nearly

100 wounded warriors from our nation’s military. The ride began in 2000 as a relay cross-country ride with teams

of riders meeting at the arch in St. Louis. In 2002 and 2003, the ride was from Ground Zero in New York to the

Pentagon, honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks on America. In April 2006, the ride was re-envisioned as an

inclusive event to honor those who suffered injuries while serving in the military. Over the next five years, a

greater number of wounded warriors from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars participated, as have additional active

duty military and civilian riders.

Each civilian, retired and active duty military participant in the ride is required to raise a minimum amount of

funds from family, friends, co-workers and colleagues to support the participation in the ride of the wounded

warriors, who pay no registration, transportation or lodging fees. Any remaining funds raised through the event

are applied to other World T.E.A.M. Sports events nationally. These events include this summer’s Sea to Shining

Sea cross-country bicycle ride, May 28 through July 28, from San Francisco to Virginia Beach. This challenging ride

with 18 wounded warriors is scheduled to pass through Frederick on July 21, on its way to Washington.

Registration for riders and teams of riders for the Face of America is currently underway online at http://

worldteamsports.kintera.org/faceofamerica2012. There is a limit in 2012 of 500 participants, including wounded

warriors.

World T.E.A.M. Sports is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered in North Carolina and headquartered in

Holbrook, New York. For more than 20 years, World T.E.A.M. Sports has organized athletic events for disabled

and able bodied citizens – mountain climbing, white water rafting, biking, and more. Four things always happen

at our events: (1) Disabled participants build self confidence and physical fitness; (2) The disabled provide a role

model for other disabled citizens, encouraging them to take up physical activities; (3) The disabled become a

moving inspiration to other participants and to spectators when they see that disabled individuals can meet chal-

lenges beyond anyone’s imagination; and (4) The disabled and able-bodied participants learn to work as a team

to overcome those challenges. World T.E.A.M. Sports changes lives through sports. Learn more about World

T.E.A.M. Sports at http://worldteamsports.org/.

(From the Race Across America Newsletter)

• "Jens no longer has a shadow because he dropped it ..."

• Jens Voigt (Germany) -Team RadioShack-Nissan-Trek pro - according to most eve-ryone in the know, is the most popular guy in the pro peloton. He is an exception-ally aggressive rider, attacking at every opportunity. His aggressive riding style is matched only by his outgoing personality. He comes up with the most interesting stuff. A cult has sprung up around his personality. For some time now others have come up with ever-better "Voigtisms" reflecting his style. Some of our favorites ...

• "If by some incredible space-time paradox Jens coul d ever race himself, he would win."

• "Lance Armstrong was born one day after Jens Voigt. Jens immediately attacked and by the Texan's 13th birthday Jens had already turned 16."

• "Jens once challenged Lance Armstrong to see who ha d more testicles. Jens won by five."

• "Jens Voigt has such good bike handling skills he ca n ride in the rain without getting wet."

• "Many cyclists have one leg stronger than the other . Each of Jens Voigt's legs is stronger than the other."

FREDERICK PEDALERS CLUB MEETING - March 6, 2012 The Orchard – Frederick MD

Attendees: Harry DeMoll (President), Kathy Dollar (Adm VP), Bob Dollar (Treasurer), Vicki Smith (Secretary), Bill Smith Meeting was called to order at 7:27PM Old Business:

January Minutes were approved.

Membership cards – tabled for the time being

Annual Meeting – Officers set the agenda for Saturday's Annual Meeting. Bob will send an email to club membership requesting desserts. Bill and Vicki will get the ice and drinks. Bob is getting the pizzas. Kathy confirmed that there is sufficient paper goods for the meet-ing and will be there to set up the room. Harry announced that Stephanie Sullivan will bring “goodies” as a thank you for our help with Cycle For Life. Tim Davis will be our featured speaker. The club will present a $50 gift certificate to Tim. Rides will start at 9:30 and plan to return ~ noon.

CF ride date is Oct 6, 2012. Bill and Harry will rework the 65-mile route to include four covered bridges.

Weekly automated ride reminder – discussion was tabled since Mike Procario was not at the meeting.

The club will not host “Ride of Silence” this year. With Bike to Work the same week, the officers and Bill felt it would not get the media exposure it deserves.

New Business:

Harry shared the survey results concerning the Wednesday Utica rides. 11 of 19 replies prefer a 6PM start; six of these people are willing to be ride leaders. Therefore, there will not be a ride start change – the C/CC rides will start at 6PM all season. Cue sheets will be left for late arrivals and each ride needs a leader and a designated “sweeper”.

2012 Tour de Frederick will need volunteers for rides, SAG, and rest stops. Vicki is coordinat-ing the volunteers again this year.

SRES Rodeo will be held on March 23, 4:30-6:30PM. The club will have volunteers to help at this event.

The officers decided to make a $100 contribution to LAB. And we will again sponsor a Boys and Girls Club rider for $250.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:13PM. Respectfully submitted, Vicki Smith, Secretary, Frederick Pedalers

DON'T WAIT TO GO CROSS-COUNTRY -- GO OVERNIGHT

(from the Adventure Cycling Association newsletter)

Spring has sprung! If you're looking for a little vernal inspiration, consider spending some time clicking around Adventure Cycling's BikeOvernights.org website. An ever-growing number of one- and two-overnight (occasionally longer) adventures are appearing at the site, contributed by rider-writer-photographers from throughout the continental U.S. and beyond. Media Specialist Mac McCoy, who is gathering and editing sub-missions, says he'd like the site to eventually feature write-ups from all 50 states, "and a bunch of foreign coun-tries. So far, we have rides from about half of the states and Canadian provinces, with Texas, Washington, and California claiming the most of any states." We're adding supplemental content to the site on a regular basis, as well, under the categories of How-to, Recipes & Food, Gear Reviews, and Travel Tips. There's also a Rail-Trails category, with around a dozen entries so far. A couple of the more popular rides posted recently at the site include "Whoopie Pies for Breakfast in Pennsylvania Dutch Country" and "The Highest Paved Road." Go here to begin exploring, and to see if your state/region is represented:

annotated example first line is shown below:

RIDE CLASSES are as follows:

“Impromptus”: When a ride is designated as “Impromptu”, this means that there will be no formal ride leader. Riders should bring maps and

perhaps old cue sheets appropriate to the ride description. At the ride start, riders discuss routes prior to the ride and then start out.

Frederick Pedalers has a well-deserved reputation as a "friendly" club; most rides are at least somewhat social, and it is very rare for a rider to

be dropped by the group. Be conservative in choosing your first few club rides, especially if this is your first bike club ride. Don’t hesitate to

call the ride leader for questions; that's why the phone number is there!

If the Weather looks threatening or otherwise inhospitable, the best thing to do is call the ride leader. You can do this the evening before the

ride or in the morning before the ride otherwise. Call early enough to catch the ride leader at home, but use common sense; the ride leader’s

family probably won’t appreciate a 6:00 am call on a Sunday morning, for example.

kind. When practical, Frederick Pedalers will include relevant

events, announcements and articles from exchanged newslet-

ters in Gearing Up.

About the Club

The Frederick Pedalers/Free State Cluster Bicycle Club,

founded in 1972, is an all-volunteer organization whose pur-

pose is to promote cycling for pleasure, health and transporta-

tion, defend the rights of cyclists and encourage safer cycling.

The club publishes this newsletter 10 times per year and

provides for the organization of member-led rides on most

weekend days and holidays. The club sponsors evening rides

on weekdays, allowing club members to unwind gracefully

after the day's toil. During the winter, regular Sunday break-

fast rides are scheduled.

The club's annual business/social meeting (and election) is

held every March; other regular annual events include a Club

Picnic in the Summer, a Club Century in the Fall and a Club

Banquet (also in the Fall).
