Affordable Bus Trips
Sixteen. That is the number of $30.00 discounts we have remaining for 2019. The Board of Directors has reserved $1,500.00 for our residents to use to help pay for your bus trips. The board recognizes that bus trips give you the opportunity to travel and see things that you might not be able to afford to do on your own. You can use a $30.00 discount for three different trips or until the money is used. If you have already signed up for three trips this year, your discount has already been applied to those trips. We have only 16 credits remaining…so if you were thinking about how nice it would be to go on the December bus trip to the Christmas Show at the American Music Theater but you wanted to wait until October to sign up, it might be too late to take advantage of the $30.00 credit. Take a look at the bus trip brochure and call us today to reserve your seat and your discount before they are gone! The most popular trip every year is the Choptank River cruise featuring All-You-Can-Eat crabs/shrimp and more. We have only ten seats remaining on the August 9th trip.
From the OFFICE Some things to laugh at…
I don’t need a hairstylist; my pillow gives me a new hairstyle every morning.
- Anonymous I changed my password everywhere to ‘incorrect’. That way when I forget it, it always reminds me, ‘Your password is incorrect’.
- Anonymous Be yourself; everyone else is taken.
- Oscar Wilde All my life I thought air was free, until I bought a bag of chips.
- Anonymous For the best seat in the house, you will have to move the dog.
- Anonymous A balanced diet means a cupcake in each hand.

Suggestion
Railside Restaurant provides Clearview Terrace tenants with delicious lunches every Tuesday and Thursday. Sometimes the portions are very large. Please do not feel as if you have to eat everything on your plate. Just bring a container and take home your leftovers to enjoy for another meal.
Thanks from Clearview Elementary School The school wanted to thank everyone who take the time to look at their food and household items and cut out the symbols that help them pay for items like playground equipment. They asked us to continue to support the school so we have included a list of items that they collect: BOX TOP symbol – Pillsbury, Cherrios, Hefty, Huggies, Kleenex, Cottonelle, Ziploc and Betty Crocker. Please clip the UPC Bar Codes from the following brands: Campbell’s, Swanson, Pepperridge Farm and SpaghettiO’s.
Collection jars are in the community areas by the post office boxes.
Do Not Feed Outdoor Animals
Please do not place food outside to feed domestic or wild animals. We know this practice draws skunks. We do not want a repeat of this problem. Do not place kitchen waste or pet food outside! You can use bird seed to feed birds, but no bread crumbs or cereal, please.
Rare coin found A resident has found a coin on our property that may be of value. If you feel this is your coin, please contact the office.
CTA Book Club Maria Law shared that the Book Club books that have been read or are now reading have a specific location on the top shelf of the bookshelf on the left hand side of the library. She also reminded all of us that books borrowed from the library are to be returned to the table for proper placement.
Fund Raising Credits Residents who volunteer for fund raising events such as sub sale and yard sale are entitled to money credits. The profit of these fundraising events are split. One half goes into the social club and those funds are used to support tenant activities such as birthday parties, movie day, condolence flowers, “90 and above club” and more. The other half is put into the Travel Club for the tenants who helped. The amount of each credit is equal to one hour of volunteer work and the cash value varies depending on the profits. Volunteers can ask for credits to be applied to mini-trips, bus trips, birthday lunches, bowling and LUNCH. If you would like to use the credits for lunch, simply sign up on the sheet and place the words “take out” or the letters “T.O.” beside your name and we will use your credits toward your lunch
Calling All Gardeners
For the past three years, we provided standing gardens for our tenant to
grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. The
gardens are available for your use again this year.
Here you see Donna Scott watering her
tomatoes last year.
Plan to meet at the gardens located beside the
maintenance shed at the parking lot behind
Clearview Terrace II on
Wednesday, April 3
10:00 AM
We will assign gardens and talk about what supplies you might need to
make this year a success for your plants. If you can’t join us on April 2, but
you want to reserve a garden, please call the office.

Fall Awareness… Leading Cause of Death for Seniors - It is Preventable!
You fall in your apartment. You realize that you can’t get up. You need help. It is embarrassing to call out until a neighbor hears you. Or you decide to sit on the floor for hours until you expect a visit from a friend or relative who can help.
That embarrassment is what keeps many seniors from telling their children and their doctor about a fall.
Yet falling and not reporting it to medical professionals can be deadly. In 2018, falls were the leading cause of death for people age 55 and
over among deaths reported to the York County Coroner’s Office. The deaths of 98 people age 55 and older in the county were
attributed to falls, the coroner’s report states. It’s the biggest cause of death for local seniors. And these number might be low since not all deaths are attributed to falls that happen.
The reality is that York County seniors are dying from something that is somewhat largely preventable.
So what can you do? At Clearview Terrace we offer “Sit & Fit” every week. These simple exercises done sitting in a chair can help your balance and strengthen your limbs. You learn them in the “Sit & Fit” session and you can do them every day at home.
York County Agency on Aging offers an excellent class called “A Matter of Balance”. The instructor leads the class through a checklist, discussing ways to tend to some hazards, and then talk about what you can do in the event you fall.
First, keep calm and get your bearings. Then, work to get yourself to something sturdy so you can get off the floor. If you’ve hit your head, you need to call your doctor. A brain bleed can show no symptoms. It can be deadly. Fortunately, doctors can send you for a test to see if you have a brain bleed. Don’t let your pride get in the way of seeking medical attention after a fall.
We hope that the York County AAA will offer the “A Matter of Balance” class in Hanover. If you are interested, please call them to let them know that you would like to attend a Hanover class. Their phone number is 1-800-632-9073. You can also get more information about those services by visiting www.fallsfreeyork.org.
Safety First
Warmer weather often times indicates an increase in criminal
activity such as break-ins and loitering. Clearview Terrace is a
safe, quiet neighborhood but we are not immune to bad people
doing bad things.
It is important to feel safe and secure around your home. Here are
a few tips for “staying safe”.
Keep your car doors locked at all times.
Check your car before entering to be sure
that it has not been broken into.
Keep your apartment door locked at all times, even during
the day when you are home. But don’t lock your screen door
during the night or when your solid door if locked. If you
would fall or become ill and would need someone to enter
your apartment, they would have to break the screen door to
enter!
Do NOT open your door for a person you do not know.
People who look innocent could be up to no good.
Don’t hesitate to call 911 if you suspect suspicious behavior.
For example, if you see a strange person walking around the
buildings at night or you hear strange noises, call 911.
If vandalism occurs to your personal property, like your car or
outdoor decorations, you must call 911 to file a police report. We
cannot do this for you. We can only file a report on Clearview
Terrace property. It is important to let police know when
vandalism or trespassing occurs. This will increase surveillance to
the area and will keep us safer.
Exterminator Visits
The exterminator visits Clearview Terrace on Wednesday, April 10 and 24 between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. If you need service, please call the office to be placed on the schedule. Please make every effort to be at home to assist maintenance staff and the Orkin technician properly identify your pest and/or insect issues.
Air Conditioner Covers
Usually, in April, the maintenance crew removes the air conditioner cover on all apartments in Clearview Terrace II (apts. 51-112). If you do not want your cover removed, please notify the office.
Community Room Available for Tenants
Tenants can reserve the community areas at Clearview Terrace for private parties and social gatherings. These events take precedent over card games and domino games. Call the office to see if the room is available for your event. Then stop by to sign a reservation form and donate $20.00 for the use of the room. During these events, we ask for the cooperation of all tenants. Please give the group privacy. Respect signs on the doors that ask you not to enter when the room is reserved.
Important Reminder
The toilet is only meant to flush the three P’s—pee, poop and (toilet) paper. Human waste and toilet paper should be the only thing going down the toilet. Please do not flush bed pads, personal pads or diapers! This causes the sewer to back up and makes for some costly repairs.
Light Bulbs - A Resident Responsibility
Your tenant handbook explains that Clearview
Terrace will provide working lights in your apartment
when you move in. It is your responsibility when the
light bulb needs replaced. We will replace your porch
light bulbs.
We will be glad to assist you in replacing the bulbs. We
realize that ceiling lights require a ladder or stool and can be a
challenge to reach. When you call the office to request a work order
for replacing a bulb, please make sure you have a replacement bulb
ready.
We do stock fluorescent tube lights for bathroom and kitchen
sinks. If you wish to purchase the bulb from us, please let us know
when you call in your work order. The fluorescent bulbs cost $6.00
each.
In Clearview Terrace III, all light fixtures are designed to accept
energy efficient bulbs. You can call the office for the type of light bulb
you need to purchase or you can purchase the bulb from us. Call for
prices.
Gas Conversion You may have noticed orange flags or orange markings painted on the ground in and around CT II apartments. We will be undergoing a gas conversion for those apartments and the markings and flags are a part of that work. PLEASE do not move the flags or plant items near any flag or marking on the ground. Thanks.
Condolences Please extend condolences to Mae Miller on the passing of her granddaughter and to Jean Mumma on the passing of her sister.
Weekend Maintenance Emergency If you are one to NOT keep your newsletter handy and you have a weekend maintenance emergency but do not know the phone number for the operator, you can call the office phone at 717-632-8081 and listen to the greeting on our answering machine to get the number you need.
Air Conditioner Electricity Fee
April is the month when residents in Clearview I and II (apartments 1 to 112) pay in full or begin payment of their electric bill that pays for operating the window air conditioner(s). The cost for the year is $45.00 for each AC unit in your
apartment. If you wish to break down your payments over the course of the next few months, here is a schedule of payments: One payment of $45.00 Four payments of $11.25 Two payments of $22.50 Five payments of $9.00 Three payments of $15.00 P.S. You can include the electric payment with your rent check. You don’t have to give us two separate checks! And, also a reminder, that if you have two air conditioners, your payment is double.
Congratulations Special congratulations are extended to Dolores Rose in Apt. 132 for guessing the correct number of snowflakes in the January newsletter and to Joan Messinger in apt. 120 for guessing the correct number of shamrocks in the March newsletter.
Automated Phone Messages
The office staff continues to use the automated phone message service with all residents to send routine messages like - “remember to sign up for the birthday party” or an urgent message - “the water supply will be shut off for a short period to allow public service to work on the lines”. We hope you continue to find this service extremely helpful.
If you do not want to receive our phone messages, please call our office and we will remove your name from the automated service.
Reminder: The speed limit at Clearview Terrace is 15 miles per hour. Please remind your guests that they must obey our speed limit. We want to keep everyone safe. Another helpful reminder – the speed limit on Randolph Street during certain school hours is 15 mph. When you pull out of Clearview Terrace you cannot see the blinking lights that remind you of the speed limit, so please use caution at all times. You do not want a $136.00 speeding ticket!
Some Recycling Tips
We are finding aluminum and steel cans mixed together in the recycling barrels. An easy way to tell the difference is to hold a magnet to the can. If the magnet sticks, it is a steel can. Examples of steel cans are vegetable, fruit, and some pet food cans. Examples of aluminum cans are soda and beer cans. Please remember to take the cans out of plastic bags before placing in the barrel.
Spring Cleanup
Residents of CTA who no longer want to or are unable to tend to a flowerbed are to
call the office and the flowerbed will be converted to a grassy area for mowing.
Pay It Forward
Many residents thank us for what we offer to everyone living at Clearview Terrace.
We do provide something for everyone – weekly blood pressure screenings, a hot meal
program, sight-seeing tours, a licensed beauty salon, our Summer Bash and daily
activities such as bingo, movies, coloring, and much more. We are very grateful that we
can do this. These things do not just happen by magic. We need the money to pay for
services and supplies. We rely on donations from individuals and organizations.
So why do we mention this? You don’t have the money to make a donation now, but
you can pay it forward to the next tenant who moves in after you.
Consider Clearview Terrace in your will or make your family aware that you would like
memorial donations to be given to Clearview Terrace.
We have an account set up to accept charitable donations. Clearview Terrace II, Inc., is a
501(c)3 fund that allows for tax deductible donations.
You can make it possible for Clearview Terrace to provide services and programs to the
next generation of residents.
Bed Bugs
We would like to remind you of some simple steps you can take to avoid being infested or spreading bed bugs.
Check your sheets for tell-tale blood spots. Use a flashlight to examine the edges of your mattress or upholstered furniture to look for the bugs that resemble small, brown, round ticks.
Consider bringing a large plastic trash bag to keep your suitcase in during hotel stays or when visiting friends and relatives.
Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation. Immediately throw away the contents of your vacuum or the bag.
When you travel, carry a small flashlight to assist you with quick visual inspections of the mattress and furniture.
Never bring second-hand furniture, especially mattresses and box springs into your apartment.
Regularly inspect areas where pets sleep for signs of bed bugs.
Wash and dry (with a dryer, not on a clothes line) new and used clothing. (Yes, bed bugs have been known to spread from clothing purchased in stores).
Bed bugs are elusive creatures. They are hard to spot in the daytime because they do not like daylight. So it is imperative to call the office if you suspect bed bugs. We will have our exterminator service inspect your apartment and begin treatment.
The treatment of bed bugs is expensive, costing Clearview Terrace thousands of dollars. We appreciate your help in preventing them from infesting your apartment and quickly reporting to us if you suspect a problem.
Office Closed The Clearview Terrace office will be closed on Thursday, April 4 to accompany residents
on the bus trip to Dutch Apple as well as Friday, April 19 for the Easter holiday.
Picnic Tables and Swings
With the warmer weather approaching we will be placing our picnic tables and swings in central areas of Clearview Terrace. Throughout the summer, we will move them to different areas so that everyone can enjoy their placement. If you are having a special get together and wish to move the table closer to your apartment for the gathering, please feel free to do so. Please put it back in a central area when you are finished.
Get Ready for Yard and Bake Sale
The month of April will be spent getting ready for the semi-annual yard and bake sale that will be held on May 1, 2 and 3. You can help in several ways:
We need volunteers every Tuesday afternoon beginning April 2 at 1:00 p.m. to help sort and price the donated clothing and household items. Meet in the library, located next to the community room; sign-in sheets will be in the office.
We need your donations of clothing and usable household items. Bring your items to the library any time before April 23. PLEASE, no TV or computer donations. Make every effort to bring your items DURING OFFICE HOURS so donations can be secured. Reminder: a security camera is located in the laundry area of CT I; any items dropped off after-hours are visible on the camera.
If you are a baker, you can start planning what you would like to make for the bake sale that is held along with the yard sale. We will need your baked good donations on May 1 by 1 pm.
If you are not a baker, but would like to donate something for the kitchen, we need items such as ketchup, soda, napkins, etc. Please call the office and ask what we need so we can coordinate donations.
And, of course, we need everyone to come to the sale and buy. We will even hold a private sale just for our tenants Wednesday, May 1 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm.
We will transform the Community Room for the Yard Sale on Monday, April 29 at 8:00 am – all hands on deck as the more help we can get, the easier and more efficient the set up will be. Meet in the Community Room at 8:00 am; sign up sheets available in the office.
Office mail slot
After hours, tenants and family members may drop off rent checks (in an envelope preferably), notes, etc…in the mail slot which is on the door to the office. Please do NOT slide a rent check or envelope under the board covering the office window.

Sub Sale - Bonus
When you volunteer to help with the sub sale, you are helping Clearview Terrace raise money that is used for so many things. Approximately half the money we raise is placed in our “social
club” bank account. We use the money to subsidize the birthday party each month and the annual Christmas party, we pay for lunches and activities for all tenants belonging to our “90 and Above Club”, we send welcome baskets to new tenants and memorial contributions for our past tenants. We supply refreshments for social events and general supplies to benefit everyone.
And the bonus to helping with this fund raising project is that you can
accumulate credits. The other half of money we raise is credited to the volunteers who help with fund raising projects like sub sales and yard sales. These funds are placed in a separate bank account. When you want to use it to pay for a bus trip, birthday party or lunch (mark it on chart), you just ask us to take money credits from the account to pay for the event.
Last Month at a Glance March birthdays were celebrated with our catered lunch by Railside. Twenty-four residents enjoyed lunch, fun games, door prizes and social time. A special treat for all residents was a personalized print out on each
person in attendance called the Birthday Calculator to include age in dog and cat years, days sleeping, amount of food eaten, how many breaths of air they have taken up to this point in their lives, etc… Two March birthdays were celebrated. Happy Birthday to Shirley Knox and Deb McCrea. The annual Shamrock Scavenger Hunt took place at lunch on Tuesday, March 19. Residents had 5 minutes to find as many shamrocks as they could while searching in the community room, foyer, hallway, library and laundry room. Congratulations to Maria Law and Jackie McGill (1st), Joan and Butch Emig (2nd) and Phyllis Klinefelter and Marty Wiles (3rd). Thanks for participating. We ushered in spring with a ‘pop-up’ ice cream social on Wednesday, March 20. The van headed east on Friday, March 25 to the New Eastern Markets off Memory Lane in York, PA. Nine residents enjoyed the time strolling the rows of vendors purchasing fresh produce and deli items, plants and flowers and sweet treats. We thank Representative Kate Klunk and her staff member Stephanie for assisting with Rent Rebate Forms. Once again this year, Stephanie from Klunk’s office came to our property to assist tenants in completing their forms. We also thank Barbara Kearns for her time, talent and energy in coordinating craft and spa days here at the Terrace. We are exercising every week and walking at either the Mall or an outside track. Many of you are taking advantage of the exercise bike in CT II. It is great to see our residents looking to improve their physical wellness.

Lunches are served Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Community Room at 11:45 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend lunches. It is a wonderful way to
enjoy food, meet new tenants, and hear about the upcoming events planned for Clearview Terrace. Call before 2:00 p.m. on the day before lunch is
served to reserve a meal. The cost is $2.50 and is paid when you come to lunch or can be paid in advance. Remember to plan your schedule
carefully. If you reserve a lunch, but cannot attend, you will be charged the full price of $4.50 for the meal – this includes members of our “Above
90 Club”. We welcome all tenants to join us for fellowship and a delicious lunch! You can also bring a guest at the cost of $5.00 each.
FYI – The chef has the right to substitute sides and desserts.
