The Present and the Future
When we analyze the overall themes of the Gospel, one thing we discover: they speak of the
present and the future. Jesus tells us that those who enjoy luxury and material wealth now have
received their reward and those who are poor and hungry, will inherit the Kingdom of God. It seems
that those who have a difficult life now are promised a much better one in the world to come
(heaven), and those who are having a good life now, should not expect a reward in the future. Does
that mean that the poor are automatically guaranteed a place in heaven and the rich are automatically
denied entrance into heaven?
Ultimately, we will be judged according to how much we loved God and our neighbor in the
time we were given here on earth. Poor and rich alike who hear the Gospel must, as best they can,
imitate the life of Christ. Our Lord reminds us, though, that we have responsibilities toward each
other in this world. We must do whatever we can to help those who have less, and make sure that
our resources are distributed fairly and justly. The “haves” and “have nots” must live together in this
world and the former must be willing to share with the latter.
At the end of this life, rich and poor alike must give an account of their lives. Rich and poor
alike will be admitted into heaven if they have lived a good and holy life here on earth. Let us make
sure that we care for each other, especially those in need and let us be grateful for all that we do have.
We share with others according to our ability. Indeed, all good gifts come from God!

February is Food Collection Month
for Glen Ellyn Food Pantry
Thank you St. James members for your strong
support which enables the pantry to furnish food
to low income families, seniors, single parents,
people with disabilities and the homeless. From
the beginning of the year until November of 2019,
5,310 bags of food were distributed (18% more
than were distributed in 2018).
Food donations will help fill our shelves. Time
donations help assist clients, stock our shelves
and enable us to pick up food donations from our
local business partners. Money donations will
allow the pantry to purchase milk, eggs, meats,
paper and hygienic products.
Food Items
Please see our display boards in the narthex for more information. Envelopes are also available
for monetary donations which can be mailed to the GEFP or dropped in the church collection
baskets. Donations of non-perishable foods may be dropped off in the Coat Room at church
or brought to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry located in the Grace Lutheran Church, 493 Forest
Ave., Glen Ellyn.
Thank you, members of St. James, for your commitment and support in helping to feed those
facing hunger. We pray God will bless you!

Worship Ministries
The Altar Server Ministry at St. James the Apostle is looking for 1-2 adults to assist the Ministry Coordinator in the training of our new servers. The role of “Assistant Parent Trainer” is an easy way to volunteer your time to help get our children prepared to take on the role of Altar Server for our parish community.
The commitment is small, so it can easily fit into your existing schedule. The largest time commitment would be during our server training days in March, which consists of two days, Saturdays, for two hours each day, 12-2 P.M. No experience is necessary, however you must completed the Protecting God’s Children program before beginning.
Please contact Nicole Geissal, Altar Server Ministry Coordinator, if you are interested or would like further details. She can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 847-921-1753. Thank you!

Be Kind and Merciful through the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
All parishioners will receive a mailing from the Diocese of Joliet this month about the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Our annual appeal is vitally important to not only the diocese, but also to our parish as well. The CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit every parish and allow us all to Be Kind and Merciful to the most vulnerable in our community. 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal will be returned to us. This is a great opportunity for our parish! Please review the materials and then prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year’s annual appeal. If you do not receive a mailing from the diocese about the CMAA, please contact the parish office.
Administration Ministries
Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday: February 26, 2020
Masses will be offered at: 8 A.M.*, 12:15 P.M., 5 P.M. & 7 P.M.
*please note: our school children will be present
Collection of Old Palms Begins Next Weekend
Beginning next weekend, parishioners are invited to bring in their old palms and place them in one of the baskets located on a table by the St. James statue. We will properly dispose them for you.*
*According to the Code of Canon Law, blessed items are not to be discarded in a trash can, but treated with respect (cf. #1171). At Mass these palm branches were set apart by a blessing from the priest and made into a “sacramental,” an object that is meant to draw us closer to the celebration of the seven sacraments. Throwing them in the trash ignores their sacred purpose and treats them like any other object we no longer need. We will burn them in order to properly dispose of them. This type of disposal honors their sacred purpose and returns them to the earth in a dignified way.

Speakout Illinois Conference
End the Injustice is the theme of the 2020 SpeakOut Illinois Conference on Saturday, February 29th, at Drury Lane Oakbrook, 100 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace. The SpeakOut committee is comprised of dozens of pro-life and pro-family organizations who, once a year, present a lovely breakfast with outstanding speakers, and display tables where you can learn more about the good work that each organization specializes in. Mary-Louise Hengesbaugh will be the featured speaker. She was the Respect Life Director for the Archdiocese of Chicago, and is the Chair of Illinois Citizens for Ethic Political Action Committee (ICE-PAC). She also organized Girls Health First in response to the extreme 2019 abortion law in Illinois. As Miss Wisconsin she spoke to over 180,000 teens and young adults in 23 states on abstinence before marriage, and is the author of Standing With Courage. You will learn how to fight for your values in a state that is deeply divided on issues regarding life.
Pastor Ceasar Leflore will receive the Henry Hyde Award in recognition of his years of pro-life work. To register go to www.speakoutillinois.org or call Ann at 773-777-2900. Tickets are $65 before 2/17, $30 for Clergy and Students. Display area opens at 8 A.M. with a full breakfast and talks beginning at 9 A.M. You won’t want to miss it!
Voter Registration
It is hard to believe that so many people who are able to vote, don’t exercise this great privilege. We all know that we can truly make a difference if we know our candidate’s positions, especially when it comes to recognizing and appreciating the fact that all life comes from God and is most precious. If you have changed your address, your name or turned eighteen you will need to update your registration or register for the first time. The deadline for voter registration is February 19, twenty-seven days before the March primary. You can also register online until March 3rd at the Board of Election website: http://www.dupageco.org/election. You can make a difference!
The last part of January and the first part of February have been busy times for the Knights of St. James the Apostle. On the afternoon of Sunday, January 19, the Knights hosted the annual Basketball Free Throw contest. We had a larger turnout of competitors is year than in years past and a great time was had by all. The picture shows the competitors along with event coordinator Knight Matt Power and Knight Mike Kane who helped with the event. On Wednesday, February 12, the prizes for the annual Essay contest and the annual Spelling Bee were awarded. $50 cash prizes were awarded to Aidan C., Luke C. and Lindsey M. for their winning essays. $50 cash prizes were also awarded to Jacob M., Ashley S., and Brooks C. for their work in the Spelling Bee. Jacob will go on to the Regional contest to be held at our parish on Sunday, March 22. The accompanying picture shows the winners along with event coordinator Knight Bob Nowakowski and St. James the Apostle School Principal Paul Kirk. Finally, a big THANK YOU to all the Knights that helped at our annual Fundraiser Pasta Dinner. We also want to thank all our friends who came to this event and joined us in our celebration. Good food and good people; who could ask for more?
