25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Turn To The Lord For Mercy; To Our God,
Who Is Generous In Forgiving. Isaiah 55:7b
Direction Isaiah tells us something that we already know, and yet seem to forget every now and then. He tells us, essen ally, that God is God and we are not. When we’re confused and troubled and can’t figure everything out, it might be wise to recall Isaiah speaking on the Lord’s behalf and explaining that God—who is on a much more, well, Godly wavelength than we are—moves in ways we can’t even imagine. Saint Paul, by comparison, has everything figured out. Kind of. At least he understands his calling in life—to magnify Christ in everything he does. That should give all of us the direc on we need. Jesus gives us direc on, too, explaining to us once again in the parable of the workers in the vineyard that the last will be first, and the first, last. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
September 23: St. Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) Did the World War II American flyer really see Padre Pio in midair, preven ng the bombing of his village below? Did Pio actually “bilocate” in Italy, the Holy Land, even America, as countless witnesses tes fied? Or “read hearts” before penitents spoke? What of the s gmata, Christ’s wounds imprinted on Padre Pio’s hands, feet, and side? John Paul II, who as a young man visited Pio, never men oned these extraordinary elements at the canoniza on. Instead, the pope spoke of “trials accepted with love,” referring perhaps to sanc ons restric ng Pio’s facul es for hearing confessions and celebra ng public Mass, imposed because of cri cism, later discredited, sent to the Va can; of Pio’s offering his sufferings in union with Jesus’ passion for a suffering world; of his con nual availability to sinners seeking direc on and absolu on; of Padre Pio’s prayer that blossomed in charity, especially through his House for the Relief of Suffering, a healthcare facility that an cipated by decades today’s holis c partnering of medical science and spirituality. Finally, how comfor ng for us ordinary Chris ans, this extraordinary saint’s most frequent advice: “Pray, hope, and don’t worry!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer Management Unfair No ce any difference between the a tude of Paul in the second reading and that of the workers in the Ma hew’s Gospel? The workers grumble because the latecomers got the same pay as those who worked all day. Paul has worked for the Lord for years, yet he thinks it is be er to keep working than to claim his reward of eternal life. The workers grumbled because the landowner gave the same wages to the ones who only worked for an hour. (You can imagine the picket signs: Vinedressers Local on Strike: Management Unfair!) Ma hew was referring to the Jews who had served God for centuries and now see newcomer Gen les claiming equality in the church. They were complaining about God’s generosity in reaching out to all peoples, not just the chosen few. God’s generosity is the real point. Contrast that with Paul, who loves the Philippians so much that he is willing to put off his heavenly reward if he can help any more people come to Christ. That is the a tude that Jesus hopes for in all his disciples. We can care more about bringing Jesus to others than we do about our own comfort or even our lives. We can do this because we know the Lord’s ways are not fair—they are more generous than we can imagine! Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Financial Stewardship and RAS Status Why should I give to the Church? Only with the sacrificial offering of all our members, can we ensure that Our Lady of the Lake remains a vibrant, ac ve faith community. With your offering you can ensure that we are able to meet our financial obliga ons to maintain our ministries, programs and facili es, pay a just wage to our parish staff, support the needs of the larger Church and assist our brothers and sisters in need. What is RAS? RAS stands for Registered, Ac ve and Suppor ng of the parish. When registering for the school or for PSR classes, each family is asked to be a Registered, Ac ve and Suppor ng member of the parish. Our Lady of the Lake has set a minimum financial amount of $450 per family, per calendar year to be considered an RAS member. Those who do not meet these requirements are asked to pay an addi onal fee. How can I fulfill my RAS minimum amount for 2020?
