With a number of recent spot fires across Central

Queensland, Isaac Regional Council is asking residents to be

extra vigilant.

“We are asking residents to prepare and be alert,” said Mayor

Anne Baker, Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group.

“As warm temperatures combined with low humidity and

increased winds create dangerous fire conditions it is very

important not to become complacent,” she said.

Under these conditions unattended or mismanaged fires may

create sparks and cause fires to spread quickly, so please be

on alert and report any vegetation fires to Triple Zero (000)

immediately.

“Remember to never throw cigarette butts out of the car

window and always be careful when operating machinery in

grassed areas,” said Mayor Baker.

Council is advising that now is a good time to finalise fire

safety preparations and visit the RFSQ website to download a

bushfire survival plan if you have not done so already.

Further information on bushfire preparation can be found at

www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

Health Matters

How to be healthyThe role of a Health Promotion officer is complex, yet simple. The ease comes with the bigger picture – we want people to be positively empowered with their own health and therefore life journey. Healthy people tend to enjoy life more then those facing health issues. Protect, prevent, live well.

The complexity comes with the fact that all people are different. Everyone faces different daily challenges, stressors, have different genetic makeup and are exposed to different physical and emotional environments. Clearly there is no one stop magic way to ensure that you have a happy and healthy life.

Over the last few years, however, I have reached the conclusion that the general message is actually repetitive. That is, on the whole, there are simple things that you can do, regardless of who or where you are, or what is going on in your life, to protect your positive well being.

Here are some of the things that I believe can make a big difference to your life.

Get connected.Your physical and mental well being does much better if you have connections to other people. In Clermont this is very easy to do. Volunteer somewhere – there are many options! Join a sport, gym, help at school, go to Tai Chi, CWA, help the wildlife carers, volunteer at Monash lodge or the museum, join the Men’s shed, go to a community event, go to a church or join the choir (keep an eye out for this happening soon). Strike up a conversation at the supermarkets or while having a coffee or quiet beer. People are generally very friendly.

The trick with connectedness is to give it time. One interaction is a start, but it will take many for the connections to strengthen. Don’t give up simply because the person you chose to talk to was having a bad day, or you went to a meeting or event where people were under pressure and perhaps not as friendly as they will be when they get to know you a little.

Be active. It is now well established that we, as human beings, are meant to move our bodies. The trick is to find something that you enjoy, and then do it. The benefits of even walking are enormous. Swimming, cycling, dancing, running, horse riding, joining one of our gym options, joining a sport, doing Pilates or yoga or doing anything at all is beneficial! You don’t have to do it to loose weight or get fit (although these can be good things depending on your personal circumstance), you can just do it for enjoyment and for the positive physical and mental benefits.

Wash your hands. One of the simplest things you can do for your health. This is the best way to avoid winter or spring colds and flu, among a range of other illnesses. You should wash your hands thoroughly before preparing food, before eating, between handling raw and cooked or ready-to-eat food, after going to the toilet or changing nappies, after smoking, after using a tissue or handkerchief, after handling rubbish or working in the garden, after handling animals or money, after attending to sick children or other family members.

Eat sensibly and regularly.Chocolate will not kill you. Not getting adequate nutrients from a range of colourful, nutrient dense foods will. The less processed the food the easier on the body’s digestive system. Moderation is the key, with regular meals. It is that simple.

Don’t smoke.

Be in a healthy weight range for your height.Getting to and keeping a healthy weight will improve your energy, make you look better (consequently improving your self esteem), allow you to enjoy things which larger people find uncomfortable (such as sitting in a chair in a crowd, bus, plane, train, movie theatre seat etc) and make buying clothes much easier.

All good reasons. However, the best reason you should strive to be within a healthy weight range is because it will significantly lessen the strain on all of your major and minor organs eg heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach, as well as your joints, knees, hips, back. Your health is much better when your body can work at its most optimum, and that is within a good weight range. The risks of almost every major illness is significantly increased if your body cannot function well.

Stay hydrated. Water is best.

Take responsibility for your own health journey.

Know your skin, know your family history, be aware of your stressors and triggers, learn what you can do to help yourself. Don’t be afraid to question, but also listen. Talk to people about their health experiences and what works for them.

Talk to people, generally. Just remember that their journey is different to yours, and that you are the one making decisions for you.

That’s it! It’s been fun.

And remember…. Protect, Prevent, Live Well
