CONCEPT STATEMENT
The 2017 construction of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce is a 3, 873 square foot office including staff offices, reception and waiting area, a conference room, a break room, executive offices and utility spaces. The design is
inspired by Cleveland’s connection to the Ocoee river and the Appalachian Mountains. The space is designed withsaturated colors to reflect the city’s slogan “The City with Spirit.” The color scheme is a direct complementary schemeof yellow greens with violet and red-violet accents. The colors give the space unity and harmony with contrasting hues.Organic lines in the patterns contrast with the rectilinear lines present in the architecture to bring feelings of both energy
and stability. The flooring in the office mimics stones and plant life with moss-green carpet, and green and brownterrazzo. Volume in the architecture creates emphasis on important spaces. The reception desk is covered by a
dropped-soffit and a raised stepped ceiling with wood grilles is centered over the seating area in the waiting room.Texture is found in the wood grain of case piece veneers and the subtly-striped carpet. Rough textures contrast with
high gloss white laminates and polished chrome.Pattern is used in upholstery pieces, dramatic lighting, and wallcoverings. The patterns are made up of organic lines andunified by color. Vertical lines found in patterns and architectural elements, such as the wood grille wall treatment in theconference room, create rhythm throughout the office. Light is used in the space to create dramatic focal points. On thewall behind the reception desk, wall washers add emphasis to the logo of the business. Asymmetrical balance is foundin many of the rooms in the office. In the conference room, a focal point is created on one wall with wall-washer lights
and wood grilles that continue from the ceiling and down the wall. The space is designed in a contemporary style with sleek finishes and natural textures. Although the office is
predominantly contemporary, the use of timeless finishes such as the wood veneers and velvet upholstery give it asense of history. The project has a strong connection to nature through colors, textures, and patterns and represents
the community in which it is found.
