WELCOME BACK CLEVELAND CHARGERS!Believing and Achieving is the year-long theme for our Cleveland
Chargers this year. Our classroom teachers and support staff will focus on helping all of our students believe and achieve academically and socially. Be on the lookout for PRIDE postcards and school-wide and classroom celebrations focused on our positive behavior supports (PBIS). Don’t forget to check out the Cleveland and District Websites for updates and important information items for families. In our efforts to continue to “Go Green”, most of our correspondence will be done electronically. Please let us know if you do not have access to a computer.
Mrs. Pape
Non-Discrimination PolicyIt is the policy of the Cedar Rapids Community School District not to illegally discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, creed, age (employment only), marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status (students/program only) in its educational programs and its employment practices. There is a grievance procedure for processing complaints of discrimination. District employees with questions or a grievance related to this policy should contact Jill Cirivello, Director of Human Resources, 319-558-2421; [email protected]. Students and others should contact Ken Morris, Manager of Student Equity, 319-558-1504; [email protected]. The District mailing address is 2500 Edgewood Rd NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405-1015.
WELLNESSLast year Cleveland Elementary worked to become designated as a Blue Zone School and with the
help of staff, parents, and students, we were able to accomplish this goal. In the family handbook, the District policy regarding treats and snacks was included. One of these District initiatives is the Wellness Regulation 610.1 point G which states:
Snacks and CelebrationsAll foods and beverages offered and made available in schools during the school day must meet
the District Nutritional Guidelines. Celebrations or other events involving food should not occur more than once per month.
We will be celebrating all birthdays at Cleveland on the last Friday of the month. We highly en-courage you to consider not sending in food items as treats but instead consider a class donation such as a book or board game with your child’s name as the donor. Other ideas include pencils and stickers. According to the District policy, the Cleveland office will need to keep any food items that do not meet the nutritional guidelines, and then send them home with the student at the end of the day. We have included some ideas of healthy food items if you choose to send in food items as treats. This policy is also in effect for any classroom celebrations.

MEET THE NEW STAFFWe have new faces to Cleveland this
year and are glad they are joining the Cleveland family. Tricia Hansen-Student Support Liaison
Tricia has background in both teaching and counseling. She taught for seven years in Texas and then has done counseling here in Cedar Rapids with all age ranges. She has two daughters and loves to travel, swim, and visit aquariums and zoos. She is a die-hard San Antonio Spurs fan so would love to talk NBA basketball too!
Erin Cornelison-Multi-Cat TeacherErin grew up in Fenton, IA and has
taught for 12 years with the past 6 years at Garfield Elementary here in Cedar Rapids. She has two sons, two dogs, and a husband! She enjoys reading, baking, movies, and spending time with friends and family.
Carrie Fairley-Second Grade TeacherCarrie has been teaching for 15 years,
most recently at Wright Elementary. She has three boys ages 10, 8, and 6 so spends lots of time at the ball fields! Her husband is a park ranger and she is an avid Hawkeye fan who loves to travel and spend time with her family and friends. Krystal Fitzpatrick-Third Grade Teacher
Krystal has taught for 3 ½ years and most recently at Taylor Elementary. She has both title I experience as well as class-room experience. She has a husband, a daughter in second grade as well as a son who is 2 ½ years old. Krystal also coaches cheerleading at the high school and col-lege levels. I see some new Cleveland cheers in our future!
Sarah Hamilton-School Nurse Sarah comes to us after being hired
full time to the Cedar Rapids Schools. Last year Sarah was assigned to Johnson and Garfield part-time. She will retain those responsibilities and be adding Cleveland this year.
In the next newsletter we will highlight more new staff to Cleveland.
