In order to make sure that you will be eligible to graduate, email [email protected] as early as possible regarding your final selection of courses for the 2017-2018 fall-winter sessions. Don’t wait until it is too late to make changes to your course selections. It is your responsibility to verify that you have fulfilled all program requirements.

Five  Steps  to  Registration

Step  1:  Choose  your  courses

Use the 2017-18 TESOL Calendar (available at tesol.wdw.utoronto.ca) and this publication to decide which courses you wish to take. Ensure that you enrol only in courses that are part of your program. Non-program courses will be removed whenever they are discovered and this may have fees implications. Double-check the time for the courses you have chosen to avoid conflicts. ACORN (U of T's automated student record system) does not check for time conflicts - it is your responsibility to create a conflict-free schedule. Prerequisites, co-requisites and exclusions indicated in the Calendar course descriptions must be carefully observed. Refer to the Calendar for definitions. Students who do not observe these regulations may be removed from courses at any time.

Step  2:  Obtain  T-‐Card  and  Email       For students who are new to UofT, obtain your University of Toronto student card (T-card) and University of Toronto email address from the Koffler Student Services Centre (214 College Street, First Floor). You will need to present this letter and proof of citizenship to get your card. Please note that you need your student card to use the online enrolment system. If you are unable to obtain your TCard prior to the course enrolment start date, please contact the TESOL office as soon as possible.

Step  3:  Enrol  in  Courses

Enrol in courses using the ACORN (the Student Web Service) – www.acorn.utoronto.ca on July 13 beginning at 6 am. See “ACORN Instructions” below.

Step  4:  Pay  your  Fees

To be registered for the Fall/Winter sessions you must both enrol in courses and pay your fees by the payment deadline. IMPORTANT: Pay your fees on time! If you do not pay or defer your fees by August 30, you risk losing your courses at any time! See “Paying Your fees” below for further instructions.

Step  5:  Go  to  Class

Class locations are included in this timetable. Refer to the Campus Map for building locations (www.map.utoronto.ca).

ACORN  Instructions   ACORN (ACORN stands for Accessible Campus Online Resource Network.) is U of T's student web service you use to access parts of your academic record, change your personal information, enroll in courses, view your invoice, and much more.

ADDITIONAL  INFORMATION  ON  COURSE  SELECTION   Use the information contained in the timetable listings to select courses. Course descriptions are found in the TESOL Calendar. Select the courses you need carefully! Although you can make changes late (up to the appropriate deadlines), some courses will not have space available if you wait too long. Some courses have enrolment conditions that govern which students are permitted to enrol in that course. Space in courses It is University policy that the number of students enrolled in a course cannot exceed the capacity of the room as dictated by fire regulations. Some departments, for pedagogical reasons, assign lower capacities than room size. If you are not officially enrolled you do not have a right to attend the class. The University makes every attempt to ensure that the room assigned will accommodate the number of students expected to enrol; however, as there is not unlimited space to meet demand, some students may not obtain space in every course they want. You may add yourself to a waiting list for a course or courses, but this does not guarantee enrolment in the course(s); therefore, you are advised to select alternate courses in which to enrol in the event that you are unable to enrol in a course that is full. We recommend that you prepare as flexible a timetable as possible, with as many alternative course choices as possible. Prerequisites, Exclusions Certain courses have exclusions, and/or prerequisites, all of which are listed in the TESOL Calendar. Prerequisites are not checked by ACORN in real time, but they will be checked! They can be checked at any time during the session, even after classes start. If you do not meet course prerequisites, you may be removed from the course. If you have already taken an exclusion, you will be required to withdraw from the course if discovered during the session of enrolment and will be refused credit in the excluded course if discovered at any time in a subsequent session. Maximum Course and Term Load Students should be aware that full-time study may not always be possible due to prerequisites, scheduling and course availability. Students may not exceed a course load of 4.0 full courses or equivalent in the Fall/Winter Session. Part-time study in the Fall/Winter Session is a maximum of 3.5 full course or equivalent courses. Students who register in more than 3.5 full or equivalent courses in the Fall/Winter Session will be charged full time incidental/ancillary fees. Students should attempt to have a course load balanced between the two terms of any session. Conflicting courses ACORN does not check for course time conflicts, so plan your schedule carefully. Once you have decided which courses you are eligible to take, make sure that none of your choices are offered at conflicting times. To help you to create a conflict-free schedule, a weekly schedule worksheet has been included at the end of this document. If you enrol in courses that conflict with one another, you do so at your own risk.

CANCELLING  COURSES   If you decide that you do not want a course, you must cancel it as soon as possible. Please do not occupy a space that you know you do not want. This applies to courses that you have waitlisted as well as those in which you are enrolled. Only by cancelling the course using ACORN will your space become available to another student. You will be responsible for any fees and academic penalties incurred if you do not cancel courses by the appropriate deadlines. The academic drop deadlines are listed in this timetable; the refund deadlines will be available on the Student Accounts information sheet enclosed with your fees invoice and on the Student Accounts web site at www.fees.utoronto.ca. Cancelling courses and fees implications Information about refunds is available on the Fees website. The deadlines for receiving a refund are different from the deadlines for withdrawing from a course without academic penalty. When you cancel a course, the refund is based on the date

you withdraw on ACORN. A cancellation of your registration after the start of the session is subject to a minimum charge. Refer to the Schedule of Fees available on the web (www.fees.utoronto.ca).

WAITING  LISTS   Waiting lists enable you to “line up” for a space that might become available in a lecture section that is full, or in an enrolment category that is full. If a space becomes available, and you are next on the waiting list, you will automatically be enrolled. After the enrolment happens, a notification email will be sent to your UofT email address (see Question 9 for details.) There are no fees associated with being on the waiting list for a course, but if you are enrolled from the waiting list, you will automatically be charged the appropriate academic and incidental fees. Note: Being on the waiting list does not guarantee you a space in the course. Q1. How do waiting lists work? If you try to enrol in a course that is full, or in a course in which the space for your enrolment control group is full, ACORN will give you the waiting list option (if the course has a waiting list.) The message might be:

• "Meeting section is full. There are currently 6 students on the waitlist for 50 total spaces." You will be given the choice to join the waiting list for any lecture section. If you decide to join a waiting list, you will get a message indicating the sections to which you have successfully added yourself. You will now have to view your courses to see your rank on the waiting list(s) that you joined. If a student drops out of the course or a new space is made available in the section, and you are the first person on the waiting list, you will be enrolled in the section. The rankings of all others on the waiting list will improve by one. Q2. What does "rank" mean? Rank is your place in line. When you list your courses on ACORN, the courses will appear in the following sections:

• APPROVED (successfully enrolled) • INTERIM (for AE courses awaiting decision) • REFUSED (unsuccessful enrolment or removed) • WAIT (on a waiting list)

For courses listed under the "WAIT" category, each lecture section will include a "rank." The message about rank that ACORN displays will contain information about the number of students already on the waiting list and the total number of spaces in the section.

• "Currently Waitlisted. Your rank is 4 out of 20 total space(s) in the meeting section." In this example, you are the fourth person on the waiting list for a section that has a total capacity of 20 students. For you to be automatically enrolled through the waiting list process, 4 students out of the 20 currently enrolled have to cancel the course. Q3. When are waiting lists in use? Waiting lists are available from July 13, 2017 until September 16, 2017 for F section code courses and January 14, 2018 for S section code courses. Q4. How many courses can I choose to "waitlist"? You are allowed to be on waiting lists for a maximum of 2.0 full-course equivalents (i.e. 4 ‘H’ courses). Q5. Do all TESOL courses have waiting lists? Yes. All TSL courses have waiting lists. Q7. Can I change or drop sections that I'm on a waiting list for? Yes. To change sections, you must ADD yourself to the waiting list of the new section, and THEN WITHDRAW from the waiting list of the original section. Once you remove yourself from a waiting list, you lose your position—if you add yourself back, you will be at the bottom of that list. Q8. How many students can be on each waiting list? There is no limit to the number of students who can join a waiting list. Q9. Will I be notified if I'm enrolled in a course through a waiting list? Yes! Log on to ACORN periodically, and list your courses and/or check your rank. You can also check your UofT account regularly for an email notification of enrolment. It is recommended that you check your rank on ACORN occasionally so that you can assess

Page 8: Click HERE for Fall-Winter 2017-18 Timetable and ...tesol.wdw.utoronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Click-HERE-for-F… · Below is the tentative list of events for the Fall/Winter

8

the situation and make an informed decision about remaining on the waiting list or choosing an alternate course that has available space. It is important to note that ACORN does not enrol students from the waiting lists into courses in real-time; instead, the enrolments are done in batches. This means that there is no need to check ACORN many times per day to see if you've been enrolled from a waiting list. Since the last day that you can join a waiting list or be enrolled into a course from a waiting list is September 16 for F section code courses and January 14 for S section code courses, you should log on to ACORN on September 17 and/or January 15 and list your courses to see if you were enrolled in anything through the waiting list process. You'll know that you've been enrolled because the course will be listed in the section called "Approved." If the course has any practical and or tutorial sections, you are responsible for enrolling in these sections as per the departmental instructions. You are also responsible for any academic and or incidental fees arising from the course enrolment. Q10. What happens if I'm not enrolled from the waiting list? Waiting lists will be closed as of September 16 for F section code courses; January 14 for S section code courses. Log on to ACORN on September 17 and January 15 if you were on a waiting list and list your courses. If courses still appear in the section called “Wait” in the listing, check back later in the day. If the course is NOT listed in the section called “Approved” AND you no longer have courses in the section called “Wait," you were not enrolled through the waiting list process. From September 16-20 (for F section code courses) and January 15-17 (for S section code courses), enrolment in courses that previously had waiting lists becomes first-come, first-served. At this stage, you should try to enrol using ACORN.

Paying  Your  Fees   After you enroll in courses on ACORN, the final step to complete your registration is to pay your fees.

The deadline to pay your fees for 2017-18 fall/winter is August 30, 2017 Payment Instructions:

1. View your fees invoice on ACORN. The invoice will be posted in mid-July. 2. Pay your fees at a bank or through online/telephone banking OR if you're receiving OSAP or Canadian/US government

loans, defer your fees on ACORN. The deadline to do this is August 30, 2017. 3. Check your registration status on ACORN.

Viewing your fees invoice Your invoice, containing tuition fee amounts for 2017-18 Fall/Winter, will appear on ACORN starting July 18. Note that fees will show up on ACORN on July 18. How and when to pay Just like most bill payments, tuition fees are paid through a bank. You can pay them electronically (through online or telephone banking) or in person at a bank. For full payment instructions, see the Office of Student Accounts web site (www.fees.utoronto.ca) The deadline to pay is August 30. Electronic payments You can pay your fees using telephone or online banking. The "Payee" name is "University of Toronto" and your account number is displayed on your invoice on ACORN. The account number consists up to the first five characters of your surname (in capital letters) and 10 numbers which is your student number with leading zeroes (if applicable). Make sure you distinguish between the letter ‘O’ and the number ‘zero’. Sample account numbers:

• Anthony Cho’s student number is 1000123456; his account number is CHO1000123456. • Jane Seto-Paul's student number is 987654321; hyphens and spaces are not used, so her account number is

SETOP0987654321. • Christine Elias' student number is 9234578; her account number is ELIAS0009234578.

N.B Make a note of the confirmation number for your records in case there is any delay or problem with your payment.

9

How long will it take for my payment to reach the University? It normally takes about 5 business days for payments to be received by the University and recorded on your financial account on ACORN. So don't worry if you paid but the amount hasn't been deducted from your balance - just check ACORN a few days after you pay. Receiving OSAP or other government loans? If you've applied for OSAP on time (by end of May for returning students; by mid-June for new students), you may be able to defer your fee payment to a later date as long as you don't owe fees from previous sessions. Fee deferrals are recorded on ACORN - check the Student Accounts web site (www.fees.utoronto.ca) for more information. Paying from outside Canada? You can find full payment instructions for students paying from outside Canada on the Student Accounts web site. Check your registration status If you pay (or officially defer) your fees by August 30, you will complete your registration automatically. If you do not pay or defer your fees by August 30, you will be removed from your courses at any time. To be safe, check to see if you are registered on ACORN a few days after you paid your fees. Your registration status is displayed on the Home Page after you log in. If your registration status is:

• Registered - this means your registration is complete • Invited - this means your registration is NOT complete and you may be removed from courses after August 30 • Financially Cancelled - this means your registration has been cancelled

IMPORTANT: Pay your fees on time! If you do not pay or defer your fees by August 30, you risk losing your courses at any time! Reinstatement may not be possible because the courses may be full. What happens if I miss the August 30 deadline? If you miss the August 30 payment/deferral deadline, you risk being removed from all your courses and any waitlisted courses. Your spot in each class may then be filled by a student from a waiting list. Even if you pay your fees at a later date, getting back in to the same courses may not be possible because they may be full. Adding courses for the first time after August 30? If you enrol in courses for the first time after the August 30 deadline, pay your fees and present proof of payment to the Woodsworth College Registrar's office immediately to be complete your registration. A late registration fee may be charged. Just taking courses starting in January? If you enrol in 2018 Winter Term (S-section code) courses only, you'll still need to pay the minimum payment required to register by August 30 to avoid being removed from your courses. If you enrol in 2018 Winter Term courses only after August 30, pay your fees and show proof of payment to Woodsworth College Registrar’s Office immediately. A late registration fee will be charged in the latter case. What if I'm only waitlisted for courses? If you are only on waiting list(s) and are not officially enrolled in any courses yet, you will need to pay a minimum fee in order to keep your position on the waiting list(s). Registration will not be automatic; contact the TESOL office before August 30 to make arrangements. Owe fees from a previous session? Students with outstanding financial obligations to the University (including tuition and residence charges) will need to pay their arrears in full before registering in the next academic session. NOTE: Students with significant fees arrears ($200+) from previous sessions as of June 15 will not be allowed to enroll in courses until their arrears are paid in full. If you have arrears of $200+, you will be blocked from enrolling in any courses until you show proof of payment to Woodsworth College Registrar’s Office. Fees payments will be applied first to outstanding debt from previous sessions before being applied to the 2017-2018 fall/winter session. Please ensure that your payment is sufficient to cover all arrears as well as your current fees, or you will not be registered.

Incidental & Ancillary Fees: full-time vs part-time Compulsory fees for registration consist of academic, incidental and ancillary fees. The academic fee portion is explained below under “Breakdown of Fees”. Incidental and ancillary fees for all TESOL students are calculated based on a student's attendance status in full-time (3.0 to 6.0 FCEs) or part-time (0.5 to 2.5 FCEs) studies. Please see the fees schedules for 2017-18 fall/winter on the Student Accounts web site (www.fees.utoronto.ca) for more details - it will be posted in early July.

OSAP  deferrals  If you have no outstanding fees from previous sessions and if you applied for OSAP by the specified deadline (see below), you may request deferral of your fees payment. This deferral is not automatic! The deferral must be completed through ACORN or at the Registrar’s office at Woodsworth College by August 30 or you will be removed from your courses. For details, see the Student Accounts web site at www.fees.utoronto.ca or contact the college registrar’s office. Returning students should apply for OSAP by May 31 and new students by June 30. It is important that you meet these deadlines; if you do so, you may request a fees deferral, your OSAP entitlement will be determined before classes begin, and you can budget accordingly. If you need to defer your fees but did not apply for OSAP by the deadline you should go to Enrolment Services, 172 St. George St. to request a deferral form.

Breakdown  of  fees  Compulsory fees for registration consist of academic, incidental and ancillary fees. Current fees will be reflected on your financial account screen on ACORN. Fees are calculated on a per-course basis. The academic, incidental and ancillary fees for 2017-2018 will be posted by the fees office in July. To provide assistance in estimating your costs for the 2017-2018 academic year, below you will find the 2016-17 fees for domestic students admitted for the 2016-2017 session. Fees for International students are detailed on the fees web site: www.fees.utoronto.ca

Course Load (one course) Academic Fees Incidental & Ancillary Fees PT* Total 0.5 $640.00 $466.56 $1,106.56

*The Full-time Incidental & Ancillary Fee was $1,328.82. If you were enrolled in 8 courses (4 full credits) over the fall/winter sessions, your academic fees would be $5,120.00 ($640.00 x 8) plus the full-time Incidental fees of $1,328.82 for a total of $6,448.82. To view the full 2017-17 fees schedule, check the fees website in July: www.fees.utoronto.ca Paying fees for changed course loads If you change your course load after you have made a payment, you can still find out how much you owe. Go to ACORN and select “Financial Accounts” from the main menu. Your current balance is displayed at the top of that page. You can make another payment for the balance. How do I know that my enrolment is complete? You can check to see if you are registered on ACORN. Log on and select "Timetables" from the main menu. Display your timetable for the current session - on the upper right portion of the timetable is your "Status". If it is "REG", your registration is complete. If your status is "INVIT", you risk being removed from your courses. Refunds If you withdraw from courses within the appropriate refund period (see Fees website for refund schedule) and do not enrol in further courses, you may request a refund of the fees by emailing a request to the Office of Student Accounts at: [email protected]. Before you send your email, check your account balance on ACORN to make sure you have a refund owing. You may also wish to set up direct deposit by recording your banking information on ACORN prior to requesting the refund.
