FEATURES
ONE-PIECE EXTRUDED ANODIZED ALUMINUMHOUSING PROVIDES INCREASED TORSIONAL
STABILITY AND FULL-STROKE,CONTINUOUS-BEARING
ROD SUPPORT.
Tol-O-Matic linear slides offer a numberof advantages over other manufacturersincluding a patented non-magnetic seal-ing band retention system (U.S. PatentNo. 4,545,290). This field-proven systemalso includes a stainless steel outer dustband held tightly in place by a T-shapedelastomer strip bonded to the band’s sur-face. The resulting non-magnetic, metal-to-metal seal provides a positivebarrier against possible contaminationof internal components.
Tol-O-Matic linear slides providepre-engineered, pre-assembledand pre-tested solutions to many
of today’s most challenging linear motionapplication needs. Available in 1/2-inchand 1-inch bore sizes, these ready-to-install slides feature a rigid, torque-resistant low-profile design for increasedtorsional stability and mounting flexibility— an excellent choice for high-precisionX-Y and space-saving applications.
The 1/2-inch bore size featurescomposite bearings for high loadcapacity, low noise and high resistanceto contaminants. The 1-inch bore sizefeatures precision linear bearings forlong life, high load capacity and lowfriction. Both sizes are based on a one-piece extruded housing that serves asthe base plate for mounting the bearingrods thus eliminating rod deflection. The result is a rigid, torque-resistant,low-profile unit that provides load guideand support along the entire stroke ofthe slide.
EXTRUDED ANODIZED ALUMINUM WORKTABLE HAS TWO PARALLEL “T” SLOTS FOR

Tol-O-Matic linear slides are comprehensive, pre-engineered, self-supporting slide systems. Designed for engineers assembling slide
systems using pneumatic rodless cylinders, these units are able to carrylarge loads while functioning as an actuator.
The LS05 features a one-piece extruded anodized aluminum housingwhich increases torsional stability and provides continuous bearing rod support through the full stroke length. This model also featurescomposite bearings allowing the slide to operate in any attitude.

Base Mount & SupportsBase mounting linear slides may be accomplished by fasteningdirectly to “T” slot nuts provided in the base of the slide or by usingthe base mounting plates shown below. These plates are also usedas a mounting surface when using tube supports (see chart at thebottom of this page). Mounting linear slides to Tol-O-Matic oranother manufacturer’s linear actuators may be accomplished usingTol-O-Matic adapter plates (see catalog no. 6000-4000).NOTE: Four “T”nuts are standard for up to 20 inches of stroke. Two “T”nuts are added for every additional 24 inches of stroke.

Shock AbsorbersAll linear slides may be purchased with light duty or heavy duty shockabsorbers for end-of-stroke load deceleration. To select the propershock absorber, cross reference the intersection on final velocity andload weight on the performance charts, below.
Since shock absorbers convert kinetic energy of a load into heat, it isimportant NOT to exceed the following maximum cycles per hour:
LS(MM)05 - 3,500 cycles per hour max.LS(MM)10 - 2,000 cycles per hour max.
NOTE: If final (orimpact) velocity cannotbe calculated directly, areasonable guideline touse is 2x averagevelocity.
ProximitySensorThis L.E.D. device senses end-of-stroke withone of two normally open inductive d.c. proxi-mity sensors. NPN supplies a sinking signal;PNP supplies a sourcing signal to a device suchas a programmable logic controller.

ACCESSORIES
Dual CarrierAvailable on all linear slide models, the dualcarrier option can increase load carryingcapacity and bending moments. Dual carriersmay be ordered with or without an internalpiston (see “Ordering,” page 12).
NOTE: Use of this option will increasebreakaway pressure and decrease the effectivestroke of the slide based on the distancebetween the center lines of the carriers.
Rates shown in charts below are calculatedwith the following assumptions:
1. Coupling between carriers is rigid.2. Load is equally distributed between the
carriers.3. Coupling device applies no misalignment
loads to carriers.

LS10 DUAL CARRIER - LOAD vs DISTANCE

SELECTION
11
Selecting a linear slide for your application is a simple pro-cedure. Before you begin, you will find it helpful to have
the following information:
Stroke Length in inches or millimeters,Load Force (weight) in pounds or kilograms,Load Speed in inches or millimeters per second,Available Operating Air Pressure, andNature of the Load (i.e. over carrier center or off to one side).
For side loads, the distance from the center of the load to thecenter of the carrier bracket is necessary to calculate thetorque for the side bending moment. Side load bendingmoments information can be found on page 3 for the LS05linear slide and page 5 for the LS10.
In the procedure outlined below, use the following data for asample application:
Stroke Length = 48 inchesLoad Weight = 40 lbs.Load Speed = 15 inches per secondAvailable Operating Air Pressure = 90 p.s.i.Nature of the Load = centered over carrier center
To Select a Linear Slide:1. Consult the “Force at Various Pressures” chart for the
LS05 (see Figure 1, below), then cross-index the loadforce (use load weight if force value is not provided) andthe available operating pressure. If the intersection is belowthe diagonal line on the chart, this is a good application. Ifthe intersection is above the line, move up to the LS10and repeat this step.
2. Refer to “Performance” charts for Tol-O-Matic shockabsorbers (see Figure 2). Cross-index the final velocityand load weight for the linear slide model identified inStep 1. If the intersection falls in the dark red area, selectthe heavy duty shock absorber. If the intersection falls inthe light red area, select the light duty shock absorber.NOTE: If final (or impact) velocity cannot be calculateddirectly, a reasonable guideline is to use 2 times theaverage velocity.
Since shock absorbers convert kinetic energy of a load intoheat, it is important not to exceed the maximum cycles perhour. For the LS05 model, the maximum cycles per hour is3,500; for the LS10 model, the maximum cycles per houris 2,000.
3. Determine the need for tube supports by referring to the“Supports” chart and cross-indexing the load weight andthe maximum distance between supports. Optional mount-ing blocks may be used secure the linear slide to the appli-cation’s support system.
4. Consider the need for the following options and accessories:
Shock absorbers*Reed switches (Form A and Form C)Hall-effect switchesProximity sensorsDual carriers* Selected in Step 2.
5. Once each of the above Steps is complete, consult the“Ordering” section on page 12 to configure your order. Ifyou need assistance, call your Tol-O-Matic distributor orcall the factory at 1-800-328-2174.

Using the LS05(inset), the inter-section is abovethe red lineindicating thatthis model cannotbe used in theapplication. Usingthe LS10, theintersection isbelow the lineand maytherefore be usedin thisapplication.
Since theintersection ofvelocity vs. load liesin the purple area, this applicationrequires a heavyduty LS10 shockabsorber.
