Where it all started.....

In 1994, Rob left Minter Ellison in search of a way to make a positive difference in the world.

In 1995 he found himself in Japan taking part in the Sacred Run, based on a Native American tradition of carrying a message from village to village.

It was here he learnt about running for a reason; running as a prayer; running to carry a message and raise awareness.

Little did he know that the journey would lead him to

where he had begun.

One day he just felt like he had to run.......

The message of the run:

•110km on the 1/10, 1 km dedicated to every person who lost their life to domestic violence in Australia in one year.

The run was symbolic: •Rob ran alone, through the night- it was lonely, frightening and physically taxing •In the morning Rob was joined by others for last 10km –the last leg represented the light at the end of the tunnel and the hope provided by Australia’s CEO Challenge and domestic violence refuges.

The message of the run:

•110km on the 1/10 for 110 lives lost to domestic violence in Australia in one year.

The run was symbolic: •Running alone during the night- lonely, scary and physically taxing. Representing the nights endured by those in an abusive relationship.

•In the morning Rob was joined by others for last 10km –the last leg represented the light at the end of the tunnel and the hope provided by Australia’s CEO Challenge and domestic violence refuges.

He knew there was a long way ahead.

But that's how it feels for those trapped in situations of family violence.

The Race in his words....

The first 10km

• Have completed the first 10km of the run. The set part of the course looked too dangerous along Caloundra Road so instead went meandering through suburbs around the beach.

• Lost track of the support car a few times. This portion of the run was specifically praying for DV victims who are lost in life so it was fitting that we got lost.

• Greeted at the end by a glorious full moon. On to Steve Irwin Way.

Ready.... OK!!! Section 3 and 4 were for my

family.

• It was tough - a bit of tummy trouble, not much space to run and lots of hills. But this section was for - Akemi (my partner), my son Lee and cat Lucky. And I thought about those not lucky to have a safe and beautiful family like mine - those in violent families - this is for them and it got me through!

• We're about 45km in now. Running along Beerburrum Road. Long straight stretch with lots of hills again. Tough going but feeling a bit better. This stretch was for my family - especially Mum, Dad, brother Andy and wife Sarah and sister Janifer (RIP). Again thinking of families who aren't so at peace.

The half way haze...

• The hallucinations set in about half way and I swear Winona Ryder was there to greet me.

• Met some kangaroos on Dances Road which I scared away from the support car. This section was for CJ and Gem who are doing a tremendous job supporting me.

When it got tough, I had to focus on the message

• Have done 90 or so km with 5 to go to get to the start of the 10km. Along Gympie Road mostly and near Chermside. I lost my glasses a section ago so I can't see very well. I've lost my leg power and had to walk a few km.

• The last section was for the many people at Minters and CEO Challenge who have helped me with this (CEO Challenge includes Gab who gave lots of great advice and inspiration).

I get by with a little help from my friends....

• The last 10km was great - with a whole lot of people joining me - representing the refuges and CEO Challenge who are there for DV victims and provide such fantastic support.

• The last leg symbolised the hope and support that can be found in a harrowing journey

The end was finally in sight...well as much as it could be without glasses!

Elated to be finished...but

obviously too tired to smile

Awareness

Every stride was about raising awareness and promoting the message that domestic violence

exists, it is sad and dark and significantly impacts our community.

We all need to do what we can to stand up and say it’s not right, there is help and hope for

those in abusive relationships, for those who go through harder nights than Rob and his support

crew endured, night after night....

Personal Leadership

• Rob did the 10km run himself but inspired others to get out of their comfort zone and do something positive about the issue

• Allison King and other 10km runners (many who had never conquered that distance before)

• Christina and Gemma and other Minter Ellison staff

• The students at APM

Personal Reflections What I’ve learnt......

• The run did not go to plan-but then again neither do the lives of those who live their relationships in fear

• People are capable of incredible things when given the opportunity

• In life there are many dark, lonely and painful roads but there is always hope of finding the light

• If you are faced by a gang of kangaroos in the middle of the night it is easier to just hand over your glasses

Click with your mouse to move forwards

Page 26: Click with your mouse to move forwards. Robs Run –for Australias CEO Challenge Click with your mouse to move forwards

• Not everyone has the support I had to get through the night

• Not everyone has someone to believe that they can do it even when I thought I could not take another step

Next Year

Another run on 1/10?

YES but this time a focus on running together; not

alone.

Hope for the future

Rob plans with the help of the Minter Ellison Sports Committee to one day

make this run as big as the Cool Night Classic! To ensure that light is shone on the issue of domestic violence and the

voices of the victims are no longer silenced. With awareness we can help to

ensure that a home is a safe haven in which all can feel loved and secure.
