Street foodmarathon, Hanoi!

Absolutely manic, the perfectphrase to describe the streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Peoplewatching people as they dine al fresco on small chairs andtables, motorbikes buzzing past pedestrians with no rights, narrow yet beauful houses atop overflowing shops, and avariety of excing street food are the arms that will welcomeyou in this place.

Let’s start with a boom! I mean, bun “bun cha!” “Bun” meansrice noodle, while “Cha” is to pork barbeque. Our adventurebegins at Hang Manh Street, the most sincere place toexperience this dish. The meal is served with fresh vegetables, vegetable salad, shredded chili, and sauce with vinegar andsecret ingredients. You take a step by diving a chunk of flavorfulpork bbq into their secret sauce, then a twirl ofsome rice noodles, and the next steps will be bitesof fresh vegetables and salad. “Welcome to Hanoi!”authenc, sincere, Vietnamese street dining, thatis the taste of this extravaganza.

Our next inerary will be at Country siderestaurant in Bat Dan Street for some famousspring rolls! Cheerful greengs and local rice winewill celebrate your visit. If you like playing withyour food before you eat it, then this is the placeto be. What makes their spring rolls so special is

Page 13: Click&Go 2014 beta issue

caish! The proper way to love your spring roll is by first laying athin layer of rice paper to hug the peanuts, carrots, cat fish, celeryand leaves, plunge it to some vinegar then enjoy! Wraping them isan art in itself. Part of what makes it more delicious is taste ofpride that comes aer overcoming the challenge of wrapping withan unbelievably thin, rice paper roll. The challenge is part ofappreciang this wonderful dish that is truly Hanoi.

True street food has no name! Don’t bother asking the name ofthe Pho shops opposite of Country side restaurant. Pho is atradional Vietnamese soup of vermicelli, herbs and chicken. Itssignificance in our inerary is to grab the opportunity to experiencePho through locals’ taste buds: al fresco, sing on ny chairs andshort tables while laughing with a friend as you watch the chaosof people and motorbikes pass by.

Vietnamese women pung on a show! Street side, a pair ofwomen gives you cooking lessons on how to make Banh Cuon,Vietnamese spring rolled rice pancake. A milky paste is pouredinto a flat cloth, aer seconds it is peeled off with a giant bamboochopsck. The steaming thin rice paper is placed on a flat dish, rolled with minced pork, fried onion and wood ear mush‐ rooms. Adding a pinch of fried onions, salted, shredded shrimp and corianders onto the rolls completes the famous dish. The result, is like meeng a new friend from a foreign place, he’s weird with a different texture, you don’t know quite sure how to describe him with the garlic

Hanoi’s pub street can be found at Tah Hien Street. At night, thestreets come alive, night market shops occupy the road, laughterflood the streets and people enjoy the night with their friend, BiaHoi beer. It’s a light brew best enjoyed with rice crackers. Arguably, the world’s cheapest beer costs one a quarter of a Dollar for a pint.

A treasure inherited from the french is a symphony of lavish meatvariety, herbs, and spreads, put together by a french bagueecalled the “Banh Mi”. It’s a must try along the streets of Vietnam, one of the best spots to grab one is at the corner of Tah Hienstreet. Egg coffee, cha ca la vong, trung vit long, dog meat and thelist goes on for your stomach’s desnaons. Enjoying your journeyas part of your desnaon means geng your hands dirty, gengcomfy on your ny seat, enjoying the view of the world passing byas you welcome the road dusts that flavors your food. Immersingyourself in the culture is how this buffet demands to be served.

and flavors, but you like him instantly coz of the vibrance of hissaucy personality. Hang Ga Street is the place to find original BanhCuon.
