Welcome to this latest edition of By-lines, Bromilow’s regular client newsletter. I extend my thanks to Yolanda, our Marketing Manager, who works hard to prepare it for your enjoyment.

Bromilow is now in its 25th year of operations, starting back in 1993. Bromilow has grown significantly over the years on the back of positive client referrals and over that time we have been careful to hold true to the values and ethos that made the organisation successful in the first place.

Two recent events have highlighted Bromilow’s success:

• In August we were reviewed by the Australian Government’s Australian Aged Care Quality Agency. This review is part of the Government’s quality assurance process that sees all aged care providers having to formally demonstrate their performance against the industry’s Home Care Standards. It was very heartening to learn that Bromilow again passed with flying colours, meeting all 18 expected standards without any requirement for follow-up action.

• We were recently advised that Bromilow had been nominated for the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Awards. As a result, I completed a formal application and have since learnt that Bromilow is now a finalist in the awards! Exciting news! Further judging took place in October

and winners will be announced at a gala event on November 18.

The success that we may enjoy inspires our commitment to offer our clients the best customer service possible. It is always reassuring to receive your feedback, good and bad, as this provides the yardstick by which we judge our efforts.

Please feel free to contact me direct on 5445 5676 or via email at [email protected] if you have any comments or suggestions for improving our service to you.

Thank you for your continuing loyal support. Later in the newsletter you will read the stories of two families who started with Bromilow not long after its inception.

Enjoy the newsletter!

Regards, Paul

It was music sharing from the young to the young at heart on Friday 13th October when the Mooloolaba State School Junior Choir hit the stage bursting with talent and enthusiasm to entertain the many Bromilow clients present.Guided by Musical Director, Wayne Dauer, the Dolce Coro ‘Sweet Choir’ performed a variety of songs from famous musicals, show tunes, Australiana and classical pieces.Along with the choir, compromising 65 students from Years 3, 4 and 5, the school’s string ensemble performed, as well as a variety of solo acts.

The audience thoroughly enjoying themselves, toe-tapping and singing along to the many familiar tunes. Following the concert, the students mingled with the audience and served up a tasty Morning Tea. We are very grateful to all who attended and extend our heartfelt thanks to Wayne, the students and everyone involved in making this event such a success. This was the second year the school has hosted Bromilow clients and if you missed it this time make sure you join us next year!

Remember MeDuring Dementia month the Sunshine Coast Dementia Network hosted REMEMBER ME - an information day dedicated to providing dementia awareness, education and networking opportunities for people living with dementia, their family carers, staff and the wider community.

Many agencies and local care providers, including Bromilow were available and provided valuable resources to attendees. Guest speakers covered a range of topics including What is Dementia, Legal Issues for People with Dementia and their Carers, Dementia Friendly Communities and Caring for a Loved One with Dementia.

In Australia, there are more than 413,000 people living with dementia. It’s a major issue in the country and information sessions such as these go a long way to help bring awareness to everyone while it reinforces the fact that carers are NOT ALONE in their journey.

At midday a minute’s silence was held to reflect/pray for people with dementia, past and present, and their families.

Positive feedback from those attending highlights the benefits of sessions such as these...

“The day was a great help for us – greatly appreciated. It’s given us direction in arranging accommodation for our daughter.”

“Thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thankyou. A fantastic way to network and be informed about other services in the community.”

Dementia Champions play a pivotal role in providing the highest quality and personalised service to clients with dementia.The Dementia Champions Network identifies a Dementia Champion as someone with excellent knowledge and skills in the care of people with dementia:• they are an advocate for people with dementia and a source of information and support for co-workers; • they have an understanding of the change process from a theoretical and practical perspective;

• they are self-motivated, motivate others and act as a role model in the delivery of person centred care, and • they are someone that has the leadership qualities and communication skills to act as a change agent.

Bromilow supports a number of Dementia Champions within the care team, including Anne who, during Dementia month, worked closely with her client, Judy, to produce a personal memory book.

Memory Books are a wonderful way to document an individual’s personal life and can help families and carers engage with people who may be having memory difficulties. During Dementia Month, one of our Dementia Champions worked closely with Judy to create a beautiful memory book.“I would like to say working with Judy to create the memory book will always be something that I feel honoured to have been a part of. Judy gained so much joy from walking me through her life journey and choosing the photos to be included in her new book.” Anne explains.“There are so many reasons for families to pursue this type of project with their loved ones and create memories together.”

Greater volume of home care services and social support are associated with significantly delayed entry into permanent residential aged care, according to new research.

Researchers from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University looked at the service use and outcomes of 1,116 older adults who began accessing a Home Care Package between July 2015 and June 2016 via the electronic care management data of a large aged care provider operating in NSW and the ACT.

The study aimed to see whether there was an association between the volume and type of services that people received and how quickly they were admitted into

permanent residential aged care.

The researchers found that each additional hour of service received per week was associated with a 6 per cent lower risk of entry into permanent care, said lead investigator Dr Mikaela Jorgensen, a research fellow at AIHI’s Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research.

“The more hours of home care services that people accessed, the lower their risk of entry into residential care,” Dr Jorgensen told Australian Ageing Agenda.

“We also found that people who were predominant users of social support services stayed in their own homes for longer,” she said.

The study identified groups of clients based on similar patterns

of types of services.

People in the social support cluster used social support services for two hours per week on average alongside other home care services for two hours per week, Dr Jorgensen said.

“People in the social support cluster had delayed entry into residential care compared to those predominately receiving domestic assistance, personal care, or in-home respite,” she said.

People who access a home care package are required to have greater control over the types of care and services they access under consumer-directed care but there is little published information connecting service use and meaningful outcomes, Dr Jorgensen said.

“This research provides evidence for consumers, care providers and policy makers about how home care services may be utilised to optimise outcomes.”

This research validates the services that clients may access through Bromilow Home Support Services and highlights the benefits of community care services.

Bromilow’s broad range of support includes in-home respite, 24-hour care, home and garden maintenance, domestic assistance, community access and support with personal care needs. If you, or a loved one need support, speak to our friendly staff on 07 5445 5676 and experience the Bromilow difference!

TAFE Queensland hosted a very successful Disability and Lifestyle Expo at their Mooloolaba Campus in August and Bromilow was proud to have been part of the event. The Expo included a diverse range of businesses, agencies and providers and drew a large crowd from the community.

Participating at the expo enabled Bromilow to not only showcase our services to the wider community but provided an opportunity to discuss specific individual support options with families and carers on the Coast.

Bromilow has many families who support a disabled family member and some of these families have been with Bromilow for many years.

Family carers are the unsung heroes in our community as their tireless efforts often go unrecognised. Their roles are demanding and being a family carer is not a 9 to 5 activity. One of the main ways that Bromilow’s services help support family carers in their role is by giving them a break, time out to recharge their batteries and have some time for themselves. Our flexible respite options, for example, offer family carers opportunities to continue working professionally, to go away for a short break, or to just take time to briefly enjoy simple pleasures.

Ruth Walker has been a Sunshine Coast local for 20 years and loves living on the Coast. “My favourite morning outing is spent at the Peregian Markets - I love the home baked slices and the date/ginger and the chocolate balls. The doughnut stall is also a favourite - the doughnuts are really big and you can choose your own filling”.

Ruth enjoys listening to music and audio books and watching movies. “I recently watched the Hundred Year Old Man, a comedy about a man in a nursing home, fed up with his life he climbs out of his window and walks off, just as the care staff are preparing to surprise him for his 100th birthday. It’s an interesting film.”

Ruth has a daughter, Keren, and son, Harold, who live in Brisbane and she looks forward to visits and outings with them. “I recently attended the Mooloolaba State School Choir concert and thoroughly enjoyed it - they have such sweet voices.”The Peregian Beach Markets are held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month from 7am at Kingfisher Park, Peregian Beach.

Staying connectedthrough the LET’s help program

Keeping up with technology is an impossible task - even for the experts - but harnessing just a few basics can open

up a whole new world of communication and connection with family and friends. With a guiding hand, many clients are embracing technology and enjoying the benefits.

Bromilow’s LET’s Help program (Life Enhancing Technology) enables clients, via education and assistance, to get the most out of the technology available to them. Assistance is provided to ensure clients are in the best position to utilise their technology and access the online world. Services include:

• Set up and personalising new devices – laptops, desktops, tablets, smart phones, digital cameras and printers• Set up and create an email address • Set up a Skype account• Assistance with product suitability (assist with purchases where possible)• Set up and schedule of backups

• Installing and/or downloading antivirus software

Bromilow client, Denis, is 86 years old and recently purchased a new tablet. Unsure of how to make the most of it, he scheduled some LET’s Help visits with Zach, from Bromilow’s LET’s Help Team. Zach showed Denis how to use his tablet to access Catch-Up TV, online shopping, Google Maps, Google Earth and Wikipedia. Denis has since used his tablet to look at houses he has previously lived in and other places he has visited around Australia and overseas. He also enjoys researching topics of interest such as old cars, trains, planes, boats and football players. Denis admits, “I was completely computer illiterate and Zach was the perfect person to show me how to use my tablet because he was so patient. My next step is to install Skype so my wife and I can talk face to face with our daughter who lives in Melbourne.”

If you would like assistance with your tablet, computer, laptop, smart phone or other IT devices, contact the LET’s Help team today on 07 5445 5676 to schedule a visit.

Adventure with DementiaOut ‘n’ About! The Adventure with Dementia Group had so much fun at Barefoot Bowls earlier in the year that they returned in August to perfect their skills and welcome new members to the group.

In September the group tried their hand at fishing at the Bli Bli Barra Fishing park. While only one fish was caught, and released, the group skilled up and enjoyed the experience.

These types of activities are vital to maintaining the health and well-being of people living with Younger Onset Dementia. Support from local businesses and clubs allow members to experience something special and create new memories and form new friendships.

Thanks to the support of the Buderim Foundation this year, the Adventure With Dementia group has participated in a variety of fun and challenging activities in and around the

Coast. Activities included:• Rainforest

walks in Buderim

• Ten Pin Bowling• Kayaking on the Maroochy

River• African Drumming• Barefoot Bowls• Mini Golf• A tour of the Ginger Factory• Fishing at the Barra Fishing

Park at Bli Bli and• Bocce on the beach!

Bromilow is now in its 25th year of service to the population of the Sunshine Coast. Starting back in 1993, Bromilow has provided care and support to literally thousands of the Coast’s residents over that time, predominantly elderly or younger disabled people who required a little support to stay living independently in their own homes.

It is very pleasing to note that there are several staff members who have been working with Bromilow for almost its entire journey. Similarly, there are clients who have also been supported by Bromilow for over 20 years and remain clients to this day.

Two particular client families come to mind, the Stahl and McDonald families. In both cases, Bromilow has supported three individual members of each family over that time.

Bromilow first started working with the Stahl family to help Basil and his wife Margaret support their son, Bruce, who was a quadriplegic and living in the family home. The family engaged Bromilow to visit the home several times each week to support Bruce with his care needs, which, being quite intense, required the services of a very qualified carer. Bromilow provided a registered nurse who had the expertise to provide the skilled professional assistance that Bruce required.

After many years, Bruce passed away and, as Margaret and Basil grew older, they both required Bromilow’s support to assist with their own needs. After some years Margaret also passed away,

leaving Basil at home with the support of his family and Bromilow’s fortnightly domestic cleaning service which is funded through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veterans’ Home Care program. Basil recently celebrated his 95th birthday!

Bromilow was introduced to the McDonald family in 1995 when Glenys, living in the family home with her elderly parents, Frieda and John, was allocated a government subsidised Home Care Package. Glenys required regular assistance from Bromilow’s staff due to her health issues. Frieda was the family carer, not only assisting Glenys but also caring for her husband, John. Bromilow provided a broad range of support options to assist the family over the years, including domestic cleaning, washing and ironing, transport, shopping, help with personal care needs and, importantly, socialisation and companionship. Frieda and John have now both passed away but Glenys remains a Bromilow client in her own right, receiving regular support during the week to remain living independently in her own home.

The Stahl and McDonald families are a wonderful endorsement of the support that Bromilow provides and the extent to which individualised support options may enhance clients’ quality of life.

Bromilow is truly grateful for the trust and confidence that the families have shown in Bromilow for over two decades.

Over the past six months Bromilow has been on a staff recruitment drive due to the increasing demand for our services. Increasing client demand is a wonderful thing. However, we must also ensure that we carefully manage growth so that the impact on our existing clients and our care team is minimal. Some members of the care team have been cooperatively working a little harder than they might prefer. As a result, we have been recruiting to ease the burden on them and to give our Scheduling Team more flexibility. I extend a very warm welcome to all new care staff – from Noosa to Bribie Island – who have joined the Bromilow team in recent months!I want to acknowledge the commitment and loyalty of Chris Rigden who is retiring this month after being with Bromilow as a member of the care team since we started. It’s not often that an employer is able to publicly thank someone who has been with an organisation for over 20 years. Chris is a member of the Noosa team where she has provided invaluable support to many clients over the years and been an important part of all the changes Bromilow has gone through in that time. Thank you, Chris! Enjoy your well-earned retirement.
