Residents in Clifton have given their backing for plans to build a new retail and residential site in the area.

The site that is being earmarked for expansion is Fairham House, which is bordered by Green Lane and Langstrath Road and next to Glapton Academy.

The proposals being put forward by Cedar House Investments, a Derby-based developer, include retail and restaurant outlets, along with one and two-bedroom apartments.

Chelsea Booth said: “I think it’s going to be really good for the people of Clifton.

“Hopefully these new shops will employ local people and attract some people from other parts of the city.”

Steven McCullough added: “I’d like to see a different set of shops to compete with what we already have here in the area.

“Hopefully, they’ll give more people on the estate who are looking for work a better chance to find jobs.”

Dawn Pears said: “I think it will be really good for the community and give Clifton a lot more choice

to shop and give the shops here much-needed competition.

“Pretty soon, people living here won’t feel the need to travel out of Clifton for anything.”

Clifton residents have long been calling for a budget supermarket to compete with the Morrisons on Green Lane, with Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood having previously discussed with both

Aldi and Lidl proposals to bring one of the popular food outlets to the estate.

Both supermarkets have previously expressed an interest in coming to Clifton, with the latter saying that it is one of their “top-priority areas”.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are committed to making Aldi more accessible to more people, and are always considering new locations

for stores across the UK, including around the Clifton area.

“As always, when we have confirmed a location for a new store we will update the local community as soon as possible.”

It is expected the opening of the site will be for Easter 2018. For more information about the plans, visit wyg.com/clifton.

Christina Brown is a Clifton-born singer/songwriter who is now based in London and has just released her first single.

Beginning her music career at a young age, Christina has been singing from the tender age of eight years old - and three years later she performed in-front of a crowd for the first time.

Her first public performance was the popular 1997 All Saints track ‘Never Ever’, aged 11, and her musical talent has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Inspired by Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, Christina has channelled her influences and original sound.

The upshot of this is the launch of her brand-new and exciting debut single ‘This Is My Life’.

Christina said: “I remember the first time I sung in public was when I was aged only 11.

“The performance took place in our school assembly.

“I had three friends that were my backing singers and we performed ‘Never Ever’, by All Saints, to the whole school.

“I remember that day as if it was yesterday. It is still very much in my memory.

“From that moment on, I just knew that singing is what I wanted to do with my life.”

The new single is based upon the true story of Christina stopping her passion for music aged 18 for so many reasons.

This included her falling pregnant, finding herself in a bad relationship and losing relationships with close family and friends.

This all left her confidence and dreams shattered.

After the birth of her second child, Christina found the courage and determination to change her life through music.

The single ‘This Is My Life’ is about standing up to fears, fighting through and finding light at the end of any tunnel.

Christina continued: “As I got older, I entered many different singing competitions.

“I was inspired by fantastic artists such as Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.

“They are truly amazing women with very powerful voices.”

Christina’s new single can be found on iTunes and Spotify. You can like her on Facebook and follow her on Twitter at @tinaMUSICbrown.

Clifton-born Christina Brown releases inspiring new debut singlePlanned improvements to the Southern Cyle Corridor between Clifton and Nottingham City Centre have been delayed.

The project is part of Nottingham City Council’s Cycle Ambition programme and was set to be completed alongside the Northern and Eastern corridors.

Concerns over funding has led to a delay to the southern project.

However, it is understood alternative funding will be found to complete the project in the next financial year.

Andrew Rule, councillor for Clifton North, said: “Whilst it is disappointing that the improvements to the Southern Corridor have been paused, it will

allow the opportunity to ensure that sections of the route in Clifton area can be improved for the benefit of cyclists and pedestrians alike.”

The planned work, which is part-funded by a £6.1 million grant from D2N2, the Local Enterprise Partnership, aims to provide improved cycle links between the city centre and Clifton.

This includes Clifton South Park & Ride and Nottingham Trent University Clifton Campus.

The first phase of the works was due to be the eastern pavement of Farnborough Road, between Silverdale Walk and Green Lane.

When complete, improvements will include widening the pavement to create a wide shared pedestrian / cycleway, relocating street lights and signs, providing pedestrian and cyclist priority at side roads and accesses and building two new parallel crossings at the Green Lane roundabout to help pedestrians and cyclists to cross.

Upon announcing the news earlier this year, councillor Nick McDonald said: “It is part of the city-wide cycling improvements we are introducing to provide quicker, safer and better cycling routes for all Nottingham’s cyclists.

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused

as we deliver this world-class cycling infrastructure that will encourage more people to shift from cars to bikes as their preferred transport option.”

The City Council have said their aim is to have 10% of people commuting to work by bike in 2025, from a figure of 3.5% in 2011.

Nottingham’s Southern Cycle Corridor project has a delay

A Clifton-based researcher has used 3D printing to create an imitation human body with the tactile qualities of living organs in order to train surgeons dealing with emergency trauma surgery.

Richard Arm (pictured below right) - of Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art & Design in Clifton, who worked alongside industry partners, created the model from silicone gels and fibres to help prepare trainee surgeons for the mental and physical experience of operating on chest organs.

The research uses CT scans of real organs to create lifelike simulations of the heart, lungs and great vessels in the chest.

The outer skin - created by Yorkshire-based Trauma FX - uses a life-cast of an anonymous model and can be cut into with a scalpel and seamlessly resealed to allow for repeated mock surgeries.

“The aim is to allow trainee surgeons the psychological space to prepare for real life surgery using immersive environments and realistic representations of human anatomy,” explains Richard, a research fellow and PhD candidate at the university.

“By communicating the experience of performing cardiothoracic surgery, surgeons can be better prepared for live surgery by improving their surgical skills.”

The imitation organs provide tactile simulations of living tissue by varying in hardness - such as

around a heart’s blood vessels – to give a realistic feel. A limited supply of artificial blood can be pumped into the body to provide the experience of operating against the clock, before a fatal level of blood-loss occurs.

As internal and external details are included, the model can even be ventilated – to give a realistic simulation of a patient breathing - using medical standard ventilators, allowing surgeons to see the movement of the patient’s chest as he or she breathes. The prototype (pictured) went on public display

at Trauma Innovation 2016, hosted near Birmingham in September

Surgeons will provide feedback on the prototype before two models are then produced for the MoD by December 2017.

The research will also explore how future models can be made cost-effective, with higher and lower spec body parts for different types of training scenarios. Plans are being made to expand the research to create other lifelike organs including the brain, eyes, stomach, pancreas, liver and kidneys, and the vascular system in a person’s legs as well as bespoke models for patient-specific preoperative surgical planning.

Colonel Peter Mahoney CBE said: “This is a really exciting and innovative collaboration with Nottingham Trent University. The ability to place clinically realistic surgical and anaesthetic training models into simulations of austere military environments is of great value to military medicine.

“As well as providing a training platform for our surgical teams, the thoracic trauma trainer will be of benefit to our prehospital Medical Emergency Response Teams.”

Professor Tilak Dias, a supervisor of the project at Nottingham Trent University, said: “Richard’s work shows how art and science can be combined to improve the way critical surgery is performed.”

2 3CLIFTON NOVEMBER 2016 EDITION CLIFTON NOVEMBER 2016 EDITION

By Robert MaddoxThere are few more stylish saloons on the market than the Giulia, finally on sale after being voted the most eagerly-anticipated new car of 2016 in the What Car? Reader Awards.Built on an all-new, rear-wheel drive platform with an emphasis on light weight, perfect weight distribution and handing agility, the Giulia is certainly an exceedingly attractive addition to the growing range of the iconic Italian brand available through Chris Variava’s Alfa Romeo showroom at Nottingham Road, Basford. Clearly, the manufacturer has produced a super saloon in building on the success of the charismatic 4C, MiTo and Giulietta. Here is a car oozing with driving

pleasure as it combines perfect 50/50 weight distribution with distinctive Italian styling and enjoys a Five Star Euro NCAP safety rating with the highest score for adult

occupant protection ever achieved. There are five trim levels starting with a standard Giulia saloon, priced from £29,180, and with the line-up completed by Super, Tecnica, Speciale and Quadrifoglio versions. They are offered with a fine range of engines including a Ferrari-inspired 2.9-litre turbo-charged V6 producing 510hp in the top Quadrifoglio model. Other versions are powered by a 2.2 litre JTDM-2 diesel with either 150hp or 180hp on tap or a 2.0-litre petrol burner producing 200hp. All drive through a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

All-new rear-wheel drive architecture, perfect weight distribution, best-in-class power-to-weight ratios, and innovative engine and driver technologies clearly make this all-new Giulia

every inch a true Alfa Romeo. In the street, the model stands out thanks to distinctive Italian design highlighted by alloy wheels fitted across the range.

LED rear lights, a chrome exhaust and aluminium brake callipers are found even on the entry-level version. This also shines by having dual-zone climate control, the Alfa D.N.A. rotary driving mode selector, a 3.5-inch TFT colour cluster instrument panel and a UConnect, 6.5-inch display infotainment system with DAB plus MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity. Also factor in an eight-speaker audio system, rear parking sensors and cruise control and this is certainly an impressive range-starting car. Drivers choosing the Giulia Super enjoy larger alloy wheels an 8.8-inch 3D navigation system with seven-inch TFT display, as well as leather and cloth seat trims in three colour options while the Tecnica

deal adds powered seats, a climate pack and privacy glass. Its driver assistance pack features front and rear parking sensors and rear view camera with dynamic gridlines. The Speciale has been developed for drivers wanting an even sportier presence on the road and features an enhanced specification including

bi-Xenon headlamps, sports front and rear bumpers, a sports diffuser, dual chrome exhaust and red brake callipers. Go for the top-of-the-range Quadrifoglio and you get leather and Alcantara upholstery, sports seats, a sports steering wheel with red ignition button plus aerodynamic Blind Spot Monitoring

technology and a rear camera. An Alfa D.N.A. Pro selector with race mode that communicates with the Alfa Chassis Domain Control system is among a raft of technical features designed to maximise the dynamic performance of the top car.

With stars in the sky, as well as on the screen, film fans will be able to enjoy a unique cinema experience in Clifton later this month.

Jointly supported by NET and Smooth Radio, the free event will allow lucky ticket holders the chance to park up and watch a film from the comfort of their car at the Clifton South park & ride site.

Taking place following a postpone-ment in September, the event will see two screenings of Grease at 3pm and 8pm on Saturday, November 26.

Both screenings are free and ticket holders from the September event should have already been contacted for the chance to reapply for this rescheduled date. Those who weren’t successful in applying for the

original date will also be contacted and invited to reapply.

Any remaining tickets following this process will then be available to win via smoothradio.com. Winners will be picked at random and full terms and conditions can be found on Smooth Radio’s website.

Stephanie Moss-Pearce, NET’s Assistant Marketing Manager, explained: “We’re really looking forward to what promises to be an exciting event with a very special atmosphere.

“With its close proximity to the M1 and easy access to other major routes, the Clifton South park & ride is a popular choice with our customers and provided the perfect choice to host an event such as this.”

The Latest Updates From The Tram

GREASE RETURNS FOR CLIFTON DRIVE-IN CINEMA

NET’s ever-popular £2 Event Ticket is available once again throughout Nottingham Panthers’ 2016-17 ice hockey season.

Match and season ticket holders can claim discounted return travel on the city’s tram network by purchasing the specially priced £2 Event Ticket from any tram stop ticket machine before boarding.

Stephanie Moss-Pearce, NET’s Assistant Marketing Manager, said: “Our Event Ticket offer has been hugely popular with fans travelling to and from the Motorpoint Arena over the past few years and we’re delighted to see it return for the 2016-17 season.”

“Not only can Panthers fans save on tram travel, but they can also avoid the hassle and expense of finding a parking space by using one of 5,000 free spaces located at our 7 park & ride sites across Nottingham.”

A Panthers spokeswoman said: “Many fans already use the tram deal to get to the games without hassle. The nearest stop in the Lace Market is just a few minutes’ walk from the arena.

“NET are great friends of the Panthers and we’re proud to remind fans that this great deal is once again available to them throughout what promises to be another big season for followers of the GMB Nottingham Panthers.”

£2 RETURN TRAM TRAVEL FOR PANTHERS FANS

Nottingham’s tram network has been named as Most Improved System at a prestigious industry award ceremony.

The high profile 2016 Global Light Rail Awards event in London saw over 200 of the industry’s most important figures gather to celebrate the achievements in light rail during the past 12 months.

Judges in the Most Improved System category were impressed that within a few months of more than doubling the size of the network last August, NET had returned to the hugely impressive performance levels of 98-99%.

NET’s General Manager, Paul Robinson, said: “This is fantastic news and a real boost to everyone who works hard, day in-day out, to ensure NET provides the best service it possibly can to thousands of happy customers.

“Our key ambition had always been to ensure the transition to a new, greatly expanded network was seamless and that customer confidence and satisfaction remained high.

“The award win is a ringing endorsement of that and we’re delighted to have been recognised by the wider light rail industry.”

A knee support sleeve that could stop painful, career-ending injuries has been designed by a student at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus to prevent injuries before they even occur. The design uses a prototype sleeve – made from elastomer and nylon – to apply compression to the knee, aiding blood flow to help reduce the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in sports professionals.

Sean Keane, who studies MSc Advanced Product Design Engineering designed the sleeve as part of his end-of-year project and has been looking at the opportunity to incorporate his designs into a pair of leggings to cater for the sports fashion market. The injuries can take players out of action for over a year and have been known to affect top sports professionals, including Maria Sharapova and Michael Owen.

Sean, who found inspiration for his designs in his love of lacrosse said: “I’ve seen players taken out of action because of ACL injuries. Most players resort to

using post-injury knee supports, but often complain that they are restrictive and uncomfortable to wear. The current knee supports available on the market use heavy materials that apply pressure to the knee. My design is made from an elastomer and nylon blend which is lightweight, comfortable and can be worn to prevent injuries before it’s too late.

“Players are often conscious of wearing knee sleeves because they don’t want to appear as though they have been injured. A pair of leggings is fashionable and also allows the wearer to keep the knee sleeve hidden.”

After studying at the university for five years, completing his undergraduate Product Design degree in 2014, he plans to pitch his design concepts to sports clothing manufacturers.

A desk chair designed by a Nottingham Trent University Clifton Campus student discourages office workers from slouching and aims to improve their overall health and wellbeing. Meining Jiang, 23, an MA Product Design student, created ‘The Mroo’ to help desk-based staff improve their circulation and posture.

It centres on the creation of a seat base which is mounted on a curved axis to allow hip movement of up to 25 degrees to mimic the movement of walking. The chair also provides a forward tilt which improves posture and reduces pressure on the lower back, which according to research, helps people maintain a good mood and feel confident.

“Research shows that an unhealthy posture caused by prolonged sitting can cause lower back problems, and chronic pain can cause negative feelings such as nervousness, irritability and disappointment,” says Meining, who’s studying in the university’s

School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment.

“The situation can become a negative spiral which can affect people’s health and quality of life. When someone is sat for up eight hours a day, it’s important that their furniture is well designed as it can play a key role in their wellbeing.

“A well-designed chair can help individuals ease the pain associated with these problems, reduce stress on the spine, increase working effectiveness and improve psychological health.”

Meining’s design was showcased as part of a celebration of work from postgraduate design students from the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment

Grant Baker, senior lecturer in Product Design, said: “The everyday office chair is an important item of furniture for millions of people around the world and its design can play a crucial part in their overall health and wellbeing.”

Situated on the River Trent and just miles from the centre of Nottingham, Clifton is now one of the county’s most sought-after investment locations.

Popular with young families and students alike, Clifton’s well-connected location and ever-increasing range of facilities mean that we have noticed a real surge in this area’s property market over the past three to four years.

House prices in this area have seen a significant increase over the past two to three years, with a three-bedroom house now going for £110,000, compared to £80,000 in 2013. Property in Clifton is also an attractive proposition for landlords. Return on investment for a three-bed property at £595 per month is currently around 7.14%.

The property market is set to continue to flourish thanks to a

number of proposed infrastructural developments which, if accepted, could be built within the next five years.

Planning permission is under review for 3,000 new homes to be built to the south of Clifton on a plot that spreads from the east of the new A453 at Clifton, towards the north of Gotham and Clifton Pastures.

As part of the same development, two new primary schools,

a community centre and sports pitches will also be built to support a potential influx of young families.

Twenty hectares of land have been proposed for employment and it has been predicted that the development could create more than 3,000 jobs.

Finally, the widening of the A453 link to the M1 at junction 24, combined with the current tram link, means that the city of Nottingham, with its sports, culture and shopping, is closer than ever.

Aaron Cambden (pictured left), owner of Fairview Estates, told The Local News: “I would hope that this planning permission will soon be granted to allow the Clifton property market to continue to grow in size and value.

“I also predict that this pattern will be mirrored by other Nottinghamshire wards south of the River Trent, such as Wilford, Ruddington and Radcliffe-on-Trent over the decade to come.”

Clifton is Nottinghamshire’s rising star on the property market

The North East Midlands Photographic Record, or Picture the Past as it’s better known, is a not-for-profit project.

It aims to make historic images from the library and museum collections across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire available via a completely free-to-use website.

The website contains more than 115,000 fully searchable photographs, postcards, engravings and paintings, so really is a place to go and find that old picture of Nottingham.

It documents how life has changed in the region over the last few hundred years.

You can visit the website for free at picturethepast.org.uk.

A&G Chem-Dry are delighted to announce a fantastic new granite care service.

Well known locally as carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning experts, A&G Chem-Dry decided to offer its unique granite renewal service. This granite renewal service is being offered following many requests from their customers.

Mike, from A&G Chem-Dry, told The Local News: “Over the years, our customers have often asked us who they could trust to clean and care for their beautiful granite worktops.

“Many had tried DIY methods but without success.

“Our service is called granite renewal as the system not only cleans granite surfaces, but removes bacteria, seals and polishes too.

“Quite simply, granite worktops are renewed both in appearance and their feel.

“As you would expect from us,

our professional Chem-Dry granite worktop renewal service uses green certified solutions.

“As with our carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning solution, these are safe and non-toxic.

“Our unique four-stage renewal process safely and effectively removes dirt and residues, penetrating deep inside the porous surface of the granite, eliminating dirt, grime and residues.”

Stage 1: Cleaning. Dirt, grime and germs are removed from your granite worktops.

Stage 2: Any remaining residues are removed from your granite surfaces.

Stage 3: Sealing. As the sealer penetrates, your granite is left with a powerful protective layer.

Stage 4: Polishing. This step leaves your granite worktops revitalised and refreshed, with a bright and beautiful shine that you will enjoy for months, and possibly years, to come.

Tip 1: Find and instruct a solicitor before you have found a buyer for your property. Most people often only decide to instruct a solicitor once they have agreed a price. Instructing a solicitor from the very beginning, before a price is agreed, means the solicitor is able to obtain full instructions on the proposed transaction. This will ensure that all the contract papers are ready to be forwarded to the buyer’s solicitors as soon as a buyer is found.

Tip 2: Take time to choose the right solicitor. A sensible way is by personal recommendation. For example a friend, family member or work colleague may be able to recommend a particular firm.

Tip 3: Check who you are dependent upon to buy and sell from. It is important that you check that the chain of transactions (the buying and selling chain) is complete and that everyone is in a position to proceed. Normally your solicitor will do this.

Tip 4: Research the different types of mortgages available. Make sure that you are borrowing enough and that you can afford the repayments now and in the future if the interest rate increases. Your home is at risk if you cannot pay. Research the best rates and take the time to decide what option is right for you.

Tip 5: Ensure that finances are in place to cover all additional costs. Make sure you have enough money to pay the difference between the purchase price and the mortgage, as well as estate agent. Don’t forget about extra fees and expenses such as surveys, stamp duty etc.

Tip 6: Make sure you personally supply funds directly to your solicitor. All the monies for the purchase must come from your own resources. Its important to advise your solicitor from the beginning if it is not.

Tip 7: Never pay money to the seller. Sometimes an estate agent or builder will ask for a deposit of a few hundred pounds. This is normal, but it is not advisable to pay a larger amount.

Tip 8: Acquaint yourself with the legal terminology. Exchange and completion are the key dates in any transaction. Exchange is the date when contract is made and you cannot withdraw without incurring a substantial liability, usually 10% of the purchase price. The completion is the date when you will move house and is agreed before exchange of contracts.

Tip 9: Never enter into a transaction unless you know you can afford it. You cannot withdraw from a transaction after contracts are exchanged without it costing you a significant amount of money to cover the other side’s legal costs

Tip 10: It is important that you check with your solicitor how long the whole process will take. On average it can take four to six weeks. This period can be reduced or lengthened depending on the chain and problems encountered with the legal process and lenders.

By John Draper

While some trees will retain their leaves to create a magical display of autumn colours, most will fall to the ground at the first signs of strong winds. Some, like the Scarlet Oak, acers, maples and dogwood, will produce brilliant foliage colour that make walks a delight for the whole family. Bright sunny days and really cold nights will herald the start of winter.

Beds and Borders The first frosts of winter will put paid to the decorative nature of dahlias, tradescantia and all manner of soft-stemmed herbaceous border plants. Even though the stems of some hardier types won’t be killed off, the foliage will start to die back and most plants will be looking untidy at this time of the year.

Cutting back the stems of border plants, such as peony, achillea, Russian sage and columbine to about 8-15cm (3-6in) before winter, is good garden hygiene.

Pests and diseases have less host material to over-winter on and the look of your borders will be much tidier. Compost all the material that is disease-free. Only when stems are carrying seed heads that are attractive to birds or visually pleasing is it worth leaving the stems of grasses, poppies, echinacea and other cone flowers. Bear’s britches (Acanthus) and liatris produce upright and sturdy stems that will remain attractive for many months.

Planting up soil beds with winter flowering bedding that will continue to bloom in spring as well is well worth the expense. Primula, polyanthus and primrose are hardy enough in most areas to survive a few years, producing bright jewel colours whenever the weather is mild

Collect up all winter leaves as they settle in your flower and shrub borders. Leaving them to rot down in situ is not a good thing as they provide comfy shelters for slugs, snails and other destructive pests.

Instead, push the leaves into empty compost bags and wet thoroughly. They will gradually rot down over the next couple of years to provide some great leaf mould that can be mixed into your home-made growing compost or used as a useful mulch. A thin sprinkle of Slug pellets around flowers, fruit and vegetables will provide protection before they hunker down to hibernate.

Lawncare There is still time to apply an autumn lawn feed to your grass areas to help strengthen the grass this year and to get rid of

any existing moss that may have developed during the wetter autumn months. The moss may be caused by heavy shade, starved grass, compact soil or poor drainage. In the worst case, moss may be present throughout the year because of all four. Tackling the shade means trimming back overhanging trees and bushes and poor drainage can be corrected with spiking.

Telephone Greener Gardens on 0115 837 8439. We would be delighted to provide a no-obligation quotation. More detailed info can be found at greenergardens.co.uk.

November Gardening Notes

There is not a better sight than the combination of autumn colours on the trees with a healthy green Prograss lawn, as you can see from the picture above.

It has been a strange year with the seasons seeming to start late, with a very cold early spring and, at the time of writing, this an extremely warm autumn. We have also seen a lot of wet weather causing strong grass growth, with the mowers having to be used a lot more often than usual. It is at this

time of the year that it is essential to provide the grass the necessary nutrients and protection, so that when we get to spring 2017 we are taking the lawn forward instead of repairing any damage done by the harsh winter when sporing moss and disease is rampant.

Generally, people do not realise that of all the treatments applied during the year, the autumn one is the most important as this is the one that sets the lawn up for the following year. The child and

pet-friendly products Prograss use at this time are mainly aimed at soil conditioning and protection from moss and disease. Prograss are your local, independent, qualified lawncare company and provide a complete lawncare service with treatments starting at just £18.

Prograss also offer the full range of mechanical treatments such as hollow-tine aeration and scarification, using commercial high-quality machinery and skilled operators.

Prograss would be more than happy to provide a free, no-obligation lawn health check and quote to discuss what is required to get your lawn back on the right track and give it protection from the coming winter, so it is in top shape for next year. Contact Prograss on 01949 837367 or visit us at the website pro-grass.com.

Neighbourhood Bloom enthusiasts, parks volunteers and school children gathered at the Council House to celebrate success in brightening up their area through gardening - and The Milford Academy in Clifton were one of the award winners.

Awards were presented to 50 groups from Nottingham who participated in ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’, which is part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign.

The groups work hard to help improve their own patch of the city, including streets, sheltered housing complexes, community gardens, churches and hospitals.

Certificates will also be presented to 17 groups who have gained Green Flag Community Awards, recognising high-quality green spaces in the UK that are managed by voluntary and community groups.

Meanwhile, three Nottingham schools received awards from

Nottingham in Bloom, all sponsored by Fast Graphics:

Best School Grounds: The Milford Academy, Clifton.

Best Bee-Friendly Habitat: Hospital and Home Education Learning Centre, Thorneywood.

Best Home for Hedgehogs: Stanstead Primary School.

Councillor Malcolm Wood, chair of the Nottingham in Bloom Working

Group, said: “The annual awards presentation is a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the many groups who are busily improving their neighbourhood, their park or their school, and for people to share ideas and gain inspiration.

“Community gardening transforms the environment and can also transform people’s lives, whether by improving physical and mental health or by being a catalyst for

new friendships to blossom. We want to thank everyone for their tremendous efforts.”

Nottingham is at the forefront of the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ initiative nationally and has also developed volunteering opportunities for assessors. About 20 Nottingham City Council staff and members of established IYN groups stepped up to be assessors, giving them an opportunity to share their experience and knowledge.

22 SPORT The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews

Transplant Sport UK (TS) have announced the squad that will be representing Great Britain and NI at the World Transplant Games in 2017 and Graeme Gunn will be part of the squad. The team, which will be the largest-ever, will travel to Malaga, Spain in June next year.

More than 200 transplant athletes, including 24 juniors and many more supporters, including some live donors, will descend on Malaga. The team has been selected following their success at this year’s Westfield Health British Transplant Games in Liverpool. They have all survived either a heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, small bowel or bone marrow transplant.

Graeme had a liver transplant just over three years ago and has been involved locally on a sporting basis in West Bridgford Rugby Club and is president of West Bridgford Sports Club. He is also actively involved in Lady Bay Tennis club

He said: “I have taken part in the GB games since July 2014 and am delighted to have been selected in the GB squad for Malaga 2017. I am also honoured to represent all of the donor families. I hope this will encourage more local people to

get themselves on the Organ Donor Register. I am pleased to follow in the footsteps of local athletes Emma Redgate and Nick Millar and take part in the Games.”

The World Transplant Games, take place every two years and are supported by the International Olympic Committee. It represents the largest organ donor awareness event in the world, featuring a week

of 17 sporting events. Team Great Britain and NI will join over 1,000 other transplant athletes from 70 countries across the globe.

Lynne Holt, team manager, said: “We are thrilled to announce our team and welcome the new faces to our squad. We aim to exceed the 127 gold medals won at the World Transplant Games in 2015 and to bring home the trophy for the best

team. They certainly deserve the same recognition as the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“It is always a little daunting competing at the World Transplant Games for the first time, but with the help of those who have been before, together with the coaches, captains, management and medical team, the experience will ultimately be a rewarding one for the athletes.

“Selection on to our team is just the beginning. It is an enormous commitment of both time and money. The next nine months will be busy for the athletes, keeping fit, regularly training in their sport, attending regular team training meets, doing publicity and trying to raise the £1,500 to get there.”

Each athlete is required to attend a minimum of two out of the three training meets. The first team meeting took place in September at Warwick University. The athletes trained with team GB&NI coaches throughout the day, interspersed with a briefing from managers, medic and one a physio. All of these people are TS volunteers, giving their time freely. The team are supported by Travel Stop and Total Team Wear.
