Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier life-style. Fitness experts advise that homeowners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon trans-form into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is coming from several win-dows, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and women maintain their energy levels throughout their workouts, whereas darker rooms can
lead to feelings of sluggish-ness, which can compro-mise workout routines. In addition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unneces-sary items that will only be a distractions during work-outs. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mir-ror, which can help men and women focus on their move-ments and ensure they are performing exercises cor-rectly. Homeowners build-
ing a home gym also should consider fi nding room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on ellipti-cal machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeowners should con-nect a streaming device to the television so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch movies as they burn calories. Its also good to fi nd space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a workout.

Homeowners hoping to ex-pand their homes are faced with a number of choices. One of the fi rst they will have to make is which direc-tion to take their expansion. Homeowners can choose to expand horizontally, in-creasing the footprint of their homes, or vertically.
Professionals urge prospec-tive remodelers to consider the pros and cons to each expansion option, including which direction to build.
One of the fi rst consider-ations is land space. Build-ing horizontally will cut into yard space that you may have already earmarked for a pool, shed or another feature. Proximity to neigh-bors and the dimensions of your property will also help to determine if expanding horizontally is a good idea.
Building codes and neigh-borhood requirements also must be considered before making any renovations.
Some municipalities may have rules in place that gov-ern renovations. Add-ons may not be allowed to ex-ceed certain height limits, nor may structures be built within a certain number of feet of property lines.
Homeowners who choose to build upward will have to contend with work crews and other staff being in their homes. Raising the roof may require vacating the premises at a certain point. Also, extensive reno-vation work will be needed on the lower level of the home, whether its to shore up the structure, clean up after the renovation or re-pair ceilings, drywall and other components where levels meet.
It may seem easier to ex-pand outward, but this requires laying additional foundation for the new building structure. Bringing in digging equipment and masons can be costly. When you build vertically, such foundation work may not be necessary if your home is
structurally sound and can bear the weight of the ad-dition.
Building out typically in-volves the least disruption
to your life and the existing space. Homeowners should keep in mind that any reno-vation will require permits or variances. In addition, if the project increases the
value of the home, home in-surance costs and property taxes may rise. Only after all considerations have been weighed should a project begin.

DID YOU KNOW?Feng shui is the practice of arranging a home or of-fi ce environment so energy fl ows gently and smoothly throughout the building. Many homeowners adhere to elements of feng shui, the origins of which date back several thousand years, in an attempt to create a positive environment that is free of stress. The basis for feng shui
is that everything in a given environment has an energy known as chi. Proponents of feng shui believe chi not only fl ows through the body but also through the environment. When a home environment negatively af-fects this fl ow, believers in feng shui feel this can lead to health problems, fi nancial troubles or domestic strife.
This is why feng shui adher-ents do not allow clutter to accumulate in their homes, as they feel clutter can stag-nate energy fl ow. In addi-tion, feng shui adherents avoid homes with long, dark hallways or poorly lit stair-cases, as they feel such areas negatively aff ect the fl ow of energy in a home.

WITH A HOME EQUITY LINE
OF CREDIT
Apply online at saratoganational.com or call us today at 583-3114
Home Equity Line of Credit, no closing costs, provided a minimum advance of $10,000 is taken at closing. Advances may be taken either by using standard Home Equity Line checks provided by the Bank or by signing a separate Installment Loan Agreement(s) with its own home equity loan rate(s) and term(s). Minimum advance by the installment loan method is $5,000 with a maximum of four outstanding loans at any time. As principal is repaid on the installment loan(s) advance(s), the available credit on the line increases by an equal amount. 2.99% APR for the first 3 years of the home equity agreement will be charged on new lines with advance(s) taken by writing a Home Equity Line check. This 2.99% interest offer does not apply if the loan purpose is to refi-nance an existing Saratoga National mortgage or home equity balance. At conclusion of the 3 year introductory fixed rate period, APR will be calculated based on the highest Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal. WSJ Prime Rate is presently 3.25% as of 12/16/08. For combo lines of $25,000 or more the annual percentage for advances taken by check will be prime +.25%, for lines less than $25,000, the annual percentage rate is prime +.75%. Rates on check advances are subject to quarterly adjustment throughout the term of loan and will not exceed a maximum of 14.95% APR. There is no minimum rate. This offer applies to consumer lines of $250,000 or less. Minimum payment of $100 on check advances may apply. Payments may be made through a Saratoga National checking or savings account. For a typical installment loan advance of $25,000 over 10 years, your monthly payment would be approximately $253.12, assuming an automatic payment from a Saratoga National checking or savings account and an APR of 4.00%. If the home equity agreement is cancelled for any reason within 2 years from closing date, the amount of closing costs and mortgage tax the Bank pays at closing (approximately $705 for a typical $25,000 line), will be added to payoff amount owed. Maximum approved line is 80% of appraised value of house minus existing first mortgage balance, if any. If the Bank determines Title Insurance is necessary, cost will be borne by customer. Customer required to maintain property insurance. All or part of Home Equity Interest may be tax deductible. Please consult with your tax advisor concerning your personal tax situation. DID YOU KNOW?Homeowners looking for a rustic or weathered look for their ooring often rely on terracotta tile, a durable and versatile material that many feel gives a home a warm and earthy feel. Terracotta tile comes in various nishes and has proven resistant
to the growth of mold and bacteria. However, because it is very porous, terracotta tile absorbs moisture quick-ly, which means it must be sealed somewhat regularly to prevent cracking, discol-oration and staining. It also must be sealed especially
well when installed in a kitchen, as terracotta oor tiles are susceptible to dam-age from acids, alcohol, oils, and vinegar. Installation of terracotta ooring is labor intensive and is therefore best left to professionals.
DID YOU KNOW?Dining outdoors when the weather is warm can make for a pleasant change of pace. While certain aspects of eating outside can be enticing, Mother Nature can sometimes complicate the experience. Wind is one challenge to dining outside, as diners may nd them-selves chasing paper nap-kins or airborne plastic cups
on windy afternoons or eve-nings. To safeguard against the wind, rely on reusable, heavy plastic items that are less likely to blow away in the wind. Also, keep table-cloths in place with a few supplies. Use a grommet-making tool to punch holes into the tablecloth and at-tach plastic or metal grom-mets. Place the tablecloth
on the table and slip a thin bungee cord fastener to a grommet on the underside of the table. Stretch the cord across to a grommet on the other side of the tablecloth and secure. Two or three sets of grommets and bungee cords may be all you need to keep the tablecloth in place and enjoy an interruption-free meal outside.

Though it may seem like in-terior decorators are a luxu-ry reserved exclusively for the rich and famous, interior decorators work with peo-ple of all budgets. Home-owners sometimes wrestle with the practicality of hir-ing a decorator, wondering why they should spend the money when they can do the work themselves. But just like homeowners may hire professional electricians or landscapers, hiring a pro-fessional interior decorator can ensure the job is done right, within budget and completed within a reason-able amount of time.
Those who have already in-vested quite a bit of money into their homes but want to add some nishing touches would be wise to hire inte-rior decorators or designers. Homeowners often have no idea where to begin when attempting to establish ow from room to room in their homes. Decorators can help homeowners tailor the inte-riors of their homes to the homes produce the desired vibe.
Hiring a designer can help a person avoid making poten-tially costly design errors. An aesthetically appealing house also can increase the
homes value, setting a prop-erty above others in terms of appeal. Even though the designer will charge a fee, the investment may be well worth the expense when the room is done right the rst time.
Interior decorators have nu-merous resources at their disposal. Fine tuned to the world of design, they un-derstand which trends will come and go and also which design ideas have staying power. In addition, decora-tors will be in touch with vendors in the industry, connecting homeowners with the best of the best in terms of providing furni-ture, housewares, photogra-phy, and additional special
touches that help make a house a home.
In addition to expertise and resources, interior decora-tors have eyes that will be trained on things home-owners may not have no-ticed or even realized can be done. A designer may envi-sion removing a room to create more space or knock-ing a wall down to let more natural light into a room.
Designers and decorators are trained to think di er-ently and spatially to achieve concepts homeowners may never have envisioned for themselves. They can help tell stories through de-sign and improve spaces immeasurably.

Granite has long been a popular countertop mate-rial for homeowners look-ing to combine functional-ity with aesthetic appeal in their kitchens. But granite is no small investment, and homeowners looking to re-furbish their kitchens should know there are a multitude of countertop materials available to those working on a budget or those who simply want to give their kitchens a diff erent look.
Solid wood: Wood counter-tops create a warm, homey interior. Butcher block coun-ters are less expensive than granite and do not neces-sarily need to be ordered from a speciality retailer. But
wood can stain and dent and can even burn when hot kitchenware is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeowners main-tain the appearance of their wood counters for years to come.
Marble: Marble tends to be less expensive than granite without sacrifi cing aesthetic appeal. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Diligence in wiping away spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is necessary for those who choose marble countertops.
Soapstone: This is a natu-ral stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives
the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can some-times have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than gran-ite, soapstone is still high-density and will hold up well. Its impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not dam-age it.
Quartz: Quartz is a manu-factured product made of stone aggregate and poly-mers compressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but requires less work to main-tain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonporous material, so it will not need routine sealing and resealing.
Glass: Glass countertops are back-painted, so home-owners can order just about any color they want.

A fl at roof is more prone to leakage than other roofs, so homeowners may need to routinely inspect their fl at roofs for any areas of water penetration. Another way to prevent leaks is to install gutter systems correctly. Gutters should not be hung completely level, but angled toward the roofs downspouts and drains. This angle will better facilitate water fl ow.
Neem oil is a naturally oc-curring pesticide that can be used to combat a host of landscaping pests and diseases. Azadirachtin is an active component in neem oil that can be extracted to repel and kill pests. Studies have shown that neem oil is nearly nontoxic to bees, birds, fi sh, and wildlife. In ad-dition, neem oil has no link to cancer or other diseases, making it a safe insecticide
when applied correctly. When consumed by insects, including grubs, insecticides made from neem oil can make those insects cease feeding or reduce their feed-ing, helping to prevent the spread of lawn problems associated with certain in-sect infestations. In addition, neem oil can hinder the mat-uration process of larvae by interfering with insect hor-mone systems, which can
prevent them from breed-ing. As is the case when applying any pesticides, parents should be mindful of their children after apply-ing neem oil. Though stud-ies have not found children are more sensitive to neem oil than adults, parents may want to err on the side of caution and prevent their children from playing in ar-eas of the yard where neem oil was recently applied.

Biosolids are an organic amendment available to gardeners. According to the United States Environmen-tal Protection Agency, bio-solids are carefully treated and monitored residuals formed at sewage treat-ment facilities. They may be recycled into fertilizers to
stimulate plant growth. Bio-solids may help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Biosolids can be safe to use, but homeowners should be cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levels and salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, which have been treated to reduce the
bacterial content and are approved for use in produc-tion agriculture. Home gar-deners may want to avoid biosolids in vegetable gar-dens because of the poten-tial for heavy metal content seeping into the produce.
