Clim-ATIC project overviewClim-ATIC project overview

Clim-ATIC is a 2.35 Million Euro, transnational project that aims to result in the best possible understanding of all issues associated with

climate change adaptation at a community level for northern regions

It is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund’s Northern Periphery Programme 2007 - 2013.

We will learn and understand more about…..

1. the different concerns within a community, a sector or a stakeholder group

2. communication techniques and methods

3. the indirect consequences of climate change on a local community

4. the challenge for politicians and policy makers to plan locally when faced with uncertainty and cross border issues

5. how local societies themselves can define the risks related to change because adaptation

6. how societies can build effective adaptive capacity

How will we do this?

Enable community stakeholders to make to make informed adaptation decisions

Support communities to deliver real adaptations that provide local economic and social advantages

Explore a range of themes and involve stakeholders from a range of community and government levels

Exchange ideas, experience and good practice between communities, small businesses, and local administrations

Disseminate knowledge through exchange visits, regional seminars, and at least one international conference

Maximise engagement and participation with land owners, local businesses, community groups, local politicians, and regional and national decision-makers

From February 2009 to June 2009, 7 primary schools within the Cairngorms National Park are each working on a project to investigate possible climate change impacts and adaptations in their communities. Each school has a separate theme and will produce a short 10 minute film.

WP3WP3

All 7 films will be shown as at film festival in Autumn 2009. Also the films will be shown at a proposed tourism sector workshop planned for late 2009, leading to the development of a sector specific adaptation strategy.

Page 12: Clim ate Change – A dapting to T he I mpacts, by C ommunities in Northern Peripheral Regions

The residents of Glen Urquhart have already participated in one pilot workshop in late 2008 to discuss climate change impacts. A larger community wide workshop will be held in late 2009 using new UKCIP09 data and a variety of visualisation methods to identify community adaptation opportunities.

The Strathspey and Badenoch Community Transport Company will demonstrate the shared community use of a sustainably fuelled vehicle in a rural area. A standard Vauxhall Astra is currently being converted to 100% electric drive and will be delivered to the community in April 2009. The car will also have a trailer mounted wind turbine.

WP4WP4

The electric car will be marketed and promoted at events, and community users will evaluate its use in a rural area over the next 18 months. It will be sold in February 2011.

A programme of awareness raising and training events has been set up to support the establishment of the local wood fuel energy industry in the Cairngorms National Park.

WP4WP4

The first event is a Woodfuel Fair to be held at Alvie Estate on 27th May 2009. The project will also support the establishment of a Community Log Supply Chain.

Page 15: Clim ate Change – A dapting to T he I mpacts, by C ommunities in Northern Peripheral Regions

The community group GULuP based in Glenurquhart, has spent the last 12 months building relationships with various stakeholders and getting professional advice on river restoration opportunities that will reduce flood risk for the River Enrick.

WP4WP4

The project is now establishing a programme of partnership flood prevention projects for the future, and will fund and manage a small river restoration project themselves during 2009/10.

Page 16: Clim ate Change – A dapting to T he I mpacts, by C ommunities in Northern Peripheral Regions

The 'Stay & Play' project aims to promote alternative activities to the winter sports market in the Cairngorms. As a pilot, consultants have been commissioned to install 10-12 bluetooth devices in and around the Aviemore area and market them in time for the Easter period 2009. Tourism businesses will get access to reports as well as have the ability to interrogate data and carry out adhoc insight analysis.

WP4WP4

The service will be evaluated both from both tourist and business ends, and Clim-ATIC will further support a more comprehensive trial during the 2009/10 ski season.

A Project part-financed by the European Union and the European Regional Development Fund

Establish a Northern Periphery Community Climate Change Adaptation Information,

Training, and Advice Service (WP5)

The UHI Millennium Institute together with the University of the Arctic are leading this workpackage.

A marketing consultant has been engaged to provide support with the feasibility study to identify target customers, appropriate content and appropriate methods of delivery.

An online questionnaire will be widely distributed throughout April and May 2009 to all NPP regions to gather this information from communities. This will be fed into a workshop to be held at the 12th Council meeting of the University of the Arctic in Kiruna, Sweden in August 2009.
