STATE EMPLOYMENT

PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION

This grant provides up to $10,000 to service members or discharged veterans who sustained serious or very serious combat-related injuries in a combat theater of operations after 9-11-2001. (Injury categories are defined in DOD Joint Publication 1-02.)

Veterans get five percentage points added to their grade or score attained in qualifying examinations for appointment to positions. Five additional percentage points are added to the grade or score if the veteran has a service-connected disability or is receiving compensation, disability benefits, or pension from the VA. Exclusions include promotions and appointments of chief of the police department and chief of the fire department.

VETERAN LIFETIME HUNTING & FISHING LISENCEVeterans who are Iowa state residents and have at least a 0% service-connected disability rating from the VA for a disability related to their military service can get a lifetime hunting or fishing license for $7.00.

This benefit reduces a veteran's assessed home value for property tax purposes by $1,850. In order to qualify, a service member must have served on active duty during a period of war or for a minimum of 18 months during peacetime.

HOME-OWNERSHIP ASSISTANCEThis $5,000 grant is available to a service member who is buying a home in the state of Iowa. Members must have served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 and purchased a home after March 10, 2005. Eligibility has been expanded to include service members who served 90 days of active duty between August 2, 1990 and April 6, 1991.
