After 45 years in education, 21 of which were at Cornerstone College, I feel confident in knowing that this was a wonderful way to spend my working life. To have contributed to the growth and learning of thousands of young people in a lifetime has been a personal blessing. In later years I have also been able to contribute to the development of teachers which has been rewarding.

I feel a great sense of thankfulness to:

• The committed and faithful people who brought the idea and dream of Cornerstone College to reality. This was a huge act of faith where from humble beginnings we now have a Christian College with over 900 students in Years 7-12. To this day ‘Christ (is) our firm foundation’, and we still have open lockers and vertical Home Groups!

• Members of local church congregations have continued their prayerful support of our College.

• Leaders who have maintained a strong Christian ethos and culture throughout the history of the College.

• The staff – teaching and support staff. By far the most significant factor affecting educational outcomes in a school is the quality of teaching (and the support of teaching). Cornerstone College has been blessed with teachers who are professional and who care for their students beyond expectation. As a sign of our confidence in our teachers (and students) we now hold Open Days for new parents on a normal school day without preparing our students – the impact of this authentic experience draws many positive comments.

• The many students who have ‘loved, learnt and grown’ in our College over the years. Those of us who have taught at Cornerstone College have felt honoured and blessed to have built special relationships with many wonderful students. Through Old Scholars networks many of these relationships and connections still flourish.

• Parents who trusted the College with the education and development of their children and have remained strong advocates in the community.

• Businesses in the local community who have supported our students and our programs generously.

It has been a privilege and personal blessing to be a teacher and leader in the Cornerstone College community.

I thank God for this and the many people who have shared this with me.

AFL International CupThe 2017 AFL International Cup was held in Melbourne from 5-19 August with 18 countries from around the world. In all there were 18 men’s and 7 women’s teams. Running every three years, it was the sixth AFL International Cup.

I had the incredible privilege to represent Team China during this year’s AFL International Cup. Consisting of players from all over China, a team was carefully selected and flown into Australia. I was honoured to be selected as one of only a couple of Australian-based Chinese players.

The whole experience was beyond words for me. It was much more than just playing football. It was deeper than any level I could have imagined. I was truly blessed and honoured to have been given the opportunity to represent my ancestral country, China. I was playing Australian Rules Football for China in an international competition that embraced diversity and multiculturalism.

Everything about the journey and the competition was incredible. Each member of Team China was dedicated and played an amazing tournament. The coaches were inspiring and we were thankful for the support of the Port Adelaide Football Club. I will also be forever thankful to Cornerstone College for their support in allowing me to be involved. There were so many highlights, but the proudest moment for me was just being able to run out on the field to represent China. Memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Habitat for Humanity Cambodia TripDuring the July school holidays, 30 students, 12 youth leaders and teachers travelled to Cambodia as a part of the Habitat for Humanity Lutheran Schools trip. We built houses, learnt some history of Cambodia, visited temples and schools and discovered an appreciation for the country and its people.

For Habitat for Humanity, we were split into groups to build three houses in five days. Two houses were elevated wood houses and one was a brick house. This was a great experience as we formed relationships with the families who we were building the houses for, while working as a team.

We were fortunate to visit the house that one of the families was currently living in. It was confronting to see because the structure of the house wouldn’t stand a chance during a tropical storm; just a few tarps full of holes laid over a few sticks. The family was embarrassed to show us their home but I would be even more embarrassed to show them my house in Australia.

Coming back home has been a big culture shock comparing the difference between the two countries, but we shouldn’t compare what we have with what the Cambodian people have. Instead we should look at how happy they are with so few possessions and reflect on whether we feel the same way about what we have. This has been an eye-opening experience and something we will cherish forever.

We would like to say a big thank you to the Cornerstone community for supporting Habitat for Humanity, enabling our trip to Cambodia to build houses. We really appreciate your generous donations and contributions which have enabled us to experience and learn how we can help other communities.

Year 10 Experience

Melbourne Experience36 shopping-ready students, accompanied by 4 patient and energetic teachers made their way to Melbourne during week 4 of Term 4 to experience the cultural festivities of Melbourne. Our week began with a cultural feast in the form of a buffet dinner, followed by the viewing of an A-League Soccer match at Etihad Stadium. Throughout the week we visited the Melbourne Aquarium in which we saw the mystical creatures of the deep, Melbourne Museum where we looked at treasures

of the past, viewed an exciting IMAX film about the Mighty Micro Monsters of the Earth, and went ice skating where most of us experienced many falls or at least scary close encounters. We also went on the Melbourne Observation Wheel, and saw a birds-eye view of Melbourne, watched the fantastic Aladdin the Musical, and had a tour of the MCG and National Sports Museum. And to finish off the week on a high note, we went up 88 floors at the Eureka Sky Deck.

Great Ocean Road ExperienceOn Sunday, 5 November, 28 excited students and 3 teachers departed Cornerstone College heading for the Great Ocean Road. After a long bus ride and an overnight stopover in Warrnambool, we were soon exploring the famous sites including London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge and 12 Apostles. We stopped in at Otway National Park for some ziplining before finally arriving at our accommodation in Lorne.

The rest of the trip was packed full of adventure and activities including canoeing, surfing, paddle boarding and mountain biking. A day trip to Torquay saw everyone bag some bargains at the surf outlet stores before enjoying some downtime hanging out at the beach. On the last night, the group came together for a relaxing game of barefoot lawn bowls with some students demonstrating impressive skills.

Year 10 Experience

Sydney ExperienceThe less than ideal weather forecast could not dampen the enthusiasm of the Sydney group as we set off early Monday morning from Adelaide Airport. Whilst we were met with an impressive deluge as we set off to Luna Park on that first day, the clouds parted and we were gifted with beautiful, sunny weather for the remainder of our stay. Highlights of the week were sound recording at Vault Studios, the party boat on the Harbour for dancing and meeting with old scholars, workshops at Bell Shakespeare

Central Australia ExperienceOn the Central Australia Experience we spent several days in Indigenous communities, interacted with the school children of Hermannsburg and Areyonga and visited culturally significant land marks such as Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. The people we met and the experiences we shared were some of the most memorable aspects of the trip. Although at times confronting, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to interact with those I met and

and the Brett Whiteley Studio, attending a preview of Muriel’s Wedding the Musical, a guided tour of the magnificent Opera House, visits to NIDA and Paddy’s Market, more workshops at Australian Theatre for Young People, a big family dinner at Zia Pina Italian restaurant, and a glorious day at Bondi Beach. So many lifelong memories were made during our wonderful week in Sydney. New friendships, new dreams, new inspiration.

gain insight into their lives. We broke down some of the stereotypes and gained respect, awareness, knowledge and appreciation for Indigenous people and culture. I now have a greater sense of pride in Australia, its rich culture, amazing people, stunning landscapes and wildlife. I now feel inspired to help change perceptions and improve the circumstances of our fellow Indigenous Australians as well as consider my own Indigenous ancestry.

Middle School

Year 9 Journey CampThe Year 9 Journey is an experiential year-long program that challenges students physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

It is a rite of passage to adulthood where we assist students to develop into self-aware, respectful, resilient, resourceful individuals who are less me-centric and

demonstrate a greater level of connectedness to the world in which they live. One of the highlights of The Journey is a camp which includes a solo expedition.

Through this experience students consolidate their learning and sense of resilience whilst discovering the strength of self.

Science WeekTo celebrate national Science Week and the theme of ‘Future Earth’ this year, a number of activities were planned to showcase sustainable solutions addressing climate change, waste accumulation and resource management. The activities included:

Australian Mathematics CompetitionEach year, Cornerstone College invites all Year 7 and 8 students, as well as interested students from other year levels, to compete in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

Competing against students from over 30 countries worldwide, students solve 30 problems in seventy-five minutes. The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking and questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as they would, with one.

Our students achieved excellent results this year, with 125 of the 279 competitors across Years 7-10 being ranked in the top 50%. We are very proud of the 45% of students who achieved a Credit or above, the 10% who achieved a Distinction or above, and the two students who were awarded High Distinctions.

Quiz NightThis year, Cornerstone College hosted eight teams at the Mathematics Association South Australia Quiz Night, representing Cornerstone College, Unity College and Mount Barker High School. The winner of the Senior School competition was Cornerstone College. The Middle School competition was also won by Cornerstone. Well done to all teams on an excellent night!

Year 11 DramaSeven years ago Mrs Karen Sierp and I wrote an adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ for our Year 12s. This year we thought the Year 11s the perfect class to re-imagine this wonderful piece of theatre with.

This was a Year 11 production but we had fantastic input from many others; Year 7s performing as Oompa Loompas, an amazing Year 9 technical genius, Matthew Landon on the projection, sound and music, and the immensely talented Year 12 student, Illana McIntyre doing lighting. Thanks also to Samantha Roberts for her Stage-Management, Jean Collins for help with Direction, and Claire Downs and Maddison Crocker for their choreography with the Year 7s.

Mrs Kristen DohertyYear 11 Drama Teacher

Year 12 Drama Production: Blue StockingsTerm 3 saw the long awaited arrival of the Year 12 Production season. 'Blue Stockings', written by UK playwright, Jessica Swale, and performed for the first time in South Australia to near full-houses by our students.

'Blue Stockings' follows the story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the larger backdrop of the women’s suffrage movement.

It was a Director’s dream to work with such talented actors and creative technical crew who performed to near sold-out audiences with impressive expression and professionalism. As a teacher, it is a marvellous thing to be able to say to your class ‘Make this happen!’ And then guide them through problem solving, creative exploration and experimentation to an incredible outcome.

The students should be very proud of their achievements in what was an engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking production.

Mrs Jane Bennett Thompson Year 12 Drama Teacher

ROOMS ProductionOver two thousand years ago, Greek philosopher Socrates commented on “the youth of today”. The assertion we make as adults that teenagers now are worse than the previous generations seems a little absurd, given Socrates' observations.

ROOMS delves into the bedrooms of teenagers over the last six decades to explore their private lives. Different families, different stories, different challenges, but one thing ties them together... they grow up.

The Year 11s embraced this challenge, the first of its kind at Cornerstone – a collaborative production between Music and Drama.

While Drama was rehearsing in the theatre, the music students were putting together the music and with a very limited shared rehearsal time, the show was put together. Our students created a production of which we are all so very proud.

Mad Hatter’s Tea PartyIn term 4, five Year 11 drama students; Jean Collins (White Rabbit), Sammi Roberts (Mad Hatter), Isobel McArthur (Alice), Maddi Crocker (Dormouse) and Makayla Leith (the Queen of Hearts), as well as old scholar, Annalise Johnson (2013, Tweedle Dee) along with teacher Kristen Doherty (Tweedle Dum) were roving performers at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in Balhannah.

The Tea Party raises money for Catherine House, a foundation that helps women and children from domestic violence and child abuse backgrounds.

The girls entertained the crowd of over a hundred people for two and a half hours and were absolutely sensational!

2017 Music CabaretThe Cornerstone College community came together for the Annual Music Cabaret on Friday, 15 September.

Special guest artist, Adam Page, captivated the audience with his solo multi-instrumental looping performance; what a treat!

Every ensemble of the music department performed along with a selection of sensational Year 12 soloists.

Congratulations and thank you to the dedicated Music Council, all performing students, the staff and students who assisted in the lead up and during the night, and all the families and friends for their support and encouragement.

Careers ExpoThe annual Adelaide Hills Careers Expo in inbarendi on Tuesday, 1 August drew over 700 visitors to the College.

This significant event enables students, parents and the wider community to explore future study, pathways and career options with more than 60 exhibitors including local employers, vocational educational providers, volunteer and service organisations, as well as universities and the Australian Defence Force.

Summit to SchoolThe annual Summit to School on Friday, 29 September was a fitting way to conclude Term 3.

Approximately 700 students and staff walked, ran or cycled from the Summit of Mount Barker back to the College. Even though it was a little windy, the weather conditions were very good.

The walkers admired an amazing view as they walked down the summit onto Williams Road and the cyclists and runners took on the challenge of some very big hills on Springs Road. It was a successful day for Aroona who won the event and took out the ‘Smelly Sandshoe Trophy’.

Well done to all who participated and got into the House spirit. We would particularly like to thank Senior Constable Chad Bryant and Senior Sergeant Andy Daly from the Mount Barker Police for their help and support for this event.

Food and Fun FestWhat a wonderful night the Food and Fun Fest was.

Families, Old Scholars and friends of Cornerstone came together for a night of fun and frivolity.

The evening featured scrumptious food prepared by the PT&F, a twilight market with everything from beauty products to artisan chopping boards, olive oil, home grown produce and pomegranate products, fashion, jewellery, sweets, cards, preloved bric-a-brac, Christmas angels and so much more.

The program of entertainment included a showcase of toe tapping brilliance, a student led fashion parade, dance moves by One50, a magician, face painting, games and even a Bollywood flash mob!

inbarendi was also abuzz during the evening with students chilling to the groovy sound of DJ Justin Lloyd (2015) on the mezzanine floor, while bubble soccer and archery attack were in full swing below.

Mrs Mon Saunders Communications & Engagement Director

Word in Our HandsIn October, our College hosted a service in inbarendi, to celebrate and commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Christian Reformation.

October, 31 is known as Reformation Day, when a German monk called Martin Luther nailed his ’95 Theses’ to a cathedral door in Wittenberg, Germany. The event set off a revolution that birthed many new Christian Church denominations, including the Lutheran Church and its schools such as Cornerstone College.

The evening included music, drama, and an interactive dialogue that focused on the power of grace that Luther worked to restore as the centre of Christian teaching.

ST MARK’S LUTHERAN Out and About with St Mark’s

Pedal Prix In June, St Mark’s students participated in the annual Pedal Prix. Early on Sunday morning, months of hard work and planning came together to provide our St Mark’s Lutheran Lightning pedal prix team the chance to participate in their first race at Victoria Park. Their effort is a credit to the 8 Year 6 students and their families who have provided enormous support to them. We offer our congratulations to them on their efforts in finishing 24th in their category. A great effort.

Chess at St Mark’s Congratulations to Richard Fries, Ryan Marks, Oliver Hotker, Haidyn Ingram and Asher Hodgson who represented St Mark’s at the South Australian Junior Chess League State Finals. Our team finished a very credible 12th place. I commend our team and the many other students in our weekly chess club for their perseverance and dedication to learning the strategic art of Chess.

Remembrance Day This year Remembrance Day fell on a Saturday and our School Captains participated in the Mt Barker Community memorial service at 10:45am. Asher Hodgson, Natalya Poletta and Jolie Chapman attended the service and laid a wreath at the memorial. St Mark’s students, along with other students represented their schools and organisations to show respect and gratitude to those who have served in the Australian forces.

Music & Drama News The St Mark’s Senior choir was very busy in Term 4.

Monday, 4 December was our annual Choir Tour. Year 5 and 6 choir students along with a small number of Year 6 instrumental students visited Sash Ferguson aged care home to perform some Christmas music for the residents. The Choir tour then included a visit to the Wallis cinemas to see The Star and some special lunch and snack treats throughout the day. The Senior Choir presented their final song for the year at the Graduation Service in Week 9 on Wednesday, 13 December at Cornerstone College.

24.ONERachael Williams (2005) is the Creative Director and genius behind the unique concept of ‘24.ONE’ which performed to a full house in the Atelier Theatre on Saturday, 14 October.

26 professional and amateur creatives were given 24 hours to produce and perform five different plays.

Kristen Doherty (Cornerstone staff member), was one of the writers and put her skills to the test writing from 8 pm to 5 am to create a comedy ‘Inspiration’, which starred Tom Liddell-Page (2016) alongside professional actors Beau Williams (52 Tuesdays) and Yasmin Martin (UTAS).

Karen Sierp (Cornerstone staff member) also directed a tragically beautiful and thought-provoking piece called ‘Thistles’ by Sydney writer, Tommy Green.

Old Scholar Phil Hahn (2005) was joined on stage by John R Sabine in the comedy-drama ‘Underbelly Star Face Prison’, and Fiona Woolford (Mieglich 2005) performed in ensemble piece ‘The Burning’, Directed by Craig McArdle. With Old Scholars, Creative Director, Hugo Fielke (2012) and Holly Wright (2006) on the production team, it was a wonderful collaboration of theatre communities and a great night of theatre.

Man Your Battlestations Budding actor and television producer, Cameron Robertson (2011), launched a reality TV show ‘Battlestations’ on Twitch.tv and Youtube in November.

Cameron is both the Producer and a Host on ‘Battlestations’, which he describes as a “25 minute reality show where ‘Renovation Rescue’ meets ‘MTV’s Pimp My Ride’”. The team enters the bedrooms of ordinary gamers and turns them into decked out millennial techie paradises.

Cameron has remained a close friend to Cornerstone since graduating, and regularly joins our Year 10 students when they travel to Sydney for their Arts Experience.

We wish Cameron the best of luck in his endeavours.
