MHA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Mary Elliott

I WOULD LIKE to take this time to give my sincere best wishes to Angie Unger as shehas given the association her notice and is planning to retire at the end of August. Angiewill be missed from her position as the Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association (MHA)secretary/treasurer and business agent, after working for 35 years with commitmentand dedication. Angie has been the one “go-to person” for many years and has lookedafter the structure and the day-to-day operations of the association.

The executive will be at a loss and will have a lot to learn in the months ahead. We wishher well as she has served the association proudly. She now is looking forward to anew chapter in her life, one of becoming a grandma, which is very exciting!

As Angie has decided to step down from her duties, I am sure she will still always havea continued presence with the MHA and we will always hold her presence with theassociation with high regard.

Once again Angie, on behalf of all members, past and present, we want to thank you foryour years of service.

As for our members in the future, they will learn the true meaning of dedication andcommitment when they hear of you and all that you have done for the association overthe past years.

Best wishes Angie. $

Best wishes

BARBARA PARKIN HAS been involved in the hairstylingtrade her entire life.

“I’m a generational hairstylist. My mom [Doreen Ness fromDoreen’s Hair Fashion and Esthetic Salon in Selkirk,Manitoba] is a hairstylist and owns her own salon and stillworks full time.”

Although Parkin still works part time as a hairstylist, mostknow her as the former apprenticeship training coordinatorfor the hairstyling trade at Apprenticeship Manitoba, aposition she has held for the past 14 years until recentlywhen she was transferred to the construction electriciantrade, one of the largest apprenticeable trades in theApprenticeship branch.

A lifetime master judge, she holds a diploma with honoursin Vocational Industrial Teachers Education from Red RiverCollege (RRC), and is a certified barber, a Red Sealcertified hairstylist by trade, and has a degree in Educationfrom the University of Winnipeg. She started her career inhigh school where she majored in hairstyling at LordSelkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. Afterwinning a bursary upon completion of high school, shewent on to pursue the barbering program at Red RiverCollege, where, prior to 1998 hairstyling and barberingwere two separate programs and trades.

Parkin worked full time as a hairstylist for many years andlater decided that she wanted to pursue something furtherin the education field. She enrolled in the Vocational

Teachers Program at RRC while still working part time, and once completed, she landed a job at ApprenticeshipManitoba as an apprenticeship training coordinator (ATC)for the hairstyling trade.

“I felt that I needed a different type of challenge, but withinthe hairstyling field,” says Parkin. “I was still excited aboutthe trade and loved being creative behind the chair, but Iwanted more than that. I wanted more of that instructoraspect. I was looking to pursue something moreeducational in an instructors’ role.”

Although her role has evolved throughout the years, Parkindeals with all aspects of the industry, including makingsure that apprentices follow the right process tocertification; invigilating exams and giving tradepresentations; interacting with instructors, examiners, andrecruitment of Provincial Trade Advisory members;working with government stakeholders, and much more.

Because Parkin is originally from a rural town, she also feltit was important to reach out to rural and remotecommunities and interact with those in the industry.

“I have always made it a strong point to go beyond the citylimits and across the province. I have reached out toplaces such as; Swan River, Dauphin, Thompson,Brandon, and Norway House. Reaching out to theselocations has allowed me to connect with people andunderstand differences and concerns which sometimesvary from the urban ones. It’s an integral part of the

apprenticeship process, if you don’t have the employers onboard to hire the apprentices, it’s not going to work. Therehave been so many changes since hairstyling entered theApprenticeship system in 1998 that educating people in theapprenticeship process has been beneficial to everybody.”

Parkin found out on February 13, 2012 that she would betransferred over to the electrical trade and she started hernew position on February 27. Although she is no longer theATC for the hairstyling trade, she has found the overwhelmingsupport from former apprentices, salon owners, educators, and those in the industry to be very touching. Parkin, who hasno prior trade knowledge of electrical, was chosen because ofher skill sets and her extensive areas of expertise, and justbecause she no longer represents hairstylists atApprenticeship Manitoba, that doesn’t mean that she won’tcontinue to be an advocate for the trade that she has beenwith for her entire life.

“My passion is with hairstyling; however, Apprenticeship won’tdefine who I am as a hairstylist. I take this change as a newopportunity to learn and grow skills in a new area ofapprenticeship and as another phase of my career.” $

Stylist-turned-reality starTabatha Coffey is taking the world bystorm, one salon and haircut at a time

by Shayna Wiwierski

TABATHA COFFEY IS a self-described bitch.

“Do you know my definition for bitch? Brave, Intelligent, Tenacious,Creative, and Honest. So yes, I am a bitch and all of you should bebitches, too,” said Coffey to the sold-out crowd at last year’sInnovate Twenty Eleven show presented by Salon Centre.

Coffey, the colourful personality behind the hit Bravo televisionshow Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, is an acclaimed hairstylist, business owner, speaker, and author (she released her best-sellingmemoir It’s Not Really About the Hair in January 2011). Before herbusy life of shooting her reality show and working at the swankyWarren-Tricomi salon on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood,Coffey was a regular girl with an unconventional upbringing. Herparents ran a transvestite strip club in Adelaide, Australia with oneof the biggest mobsters in the country as a business partner. Later, her dad abandoned both herself and her mom after faking his ownsuicide.

“Our childhood and our upbringing make us the people who weare. I think for me, [regarding] some of the things that happenedand the environments in which I grew up, it’s definitely a part ofwhere that no-holds-barred honesty comes from and it’s also partof that tough love that I have,” says Coffey, who has a year-or-more waiting list at the Warren-Tricomi salon, where her haircutsstart at $250.

“Having a strong mother who was very much like that; beingaround the nightclubs in which I grew up; having my father leaveus when I was such an early age; these are the things that, at ayoung age, toughen you up for when you are an adult and kind ofencourage you, I guess, to say what’s on your mind. And to express

your need for people and what their expectations are; but theseexperiences – especially growing up in the clubs – also enabled meto be very open-minded, compassionate and caring, and honest.”

Coffey’s honesty made her the fan favourite on the reality televisionshow Shear Genius where, in 2007, she competed against 11 otherhairstylists for a $100,000 prize. Before her “tell it like it is”moniker on television, she worked in salons in Australia, London, the United States, and travelled the world as an international artistfor Joico.

She has also trained at the legendary Vidal Sassoon academy andworked as a head colourist at the Toni & Guy salon in Windsor,England.

“They are the mecca. There are a million amazing hairdressers outthere but because I started hairdressing so young, Vidal Sassoonwas the person who we wanted to become; the person who wewanted that education, that precision, eye and structure, and all thethings for which Sassoon stood. For me, it was a personal goal anddream to go there and be able to train and work; same with goingto Toni & Guy.”

Education, she says, is important to any hairdresser, regardless ifthey took a class a month ago or years ago. Her tip to stylists forboth those fresh in the industry and those who have been in forgenerations? Never stop learning.

“Hairstyling is a profession that changes; trends change, productschange, new things come out, fashion changes quickly. You have tokeep yourself current and up-to-date, and education is really thebest way to do that.”

Page 15: Clippings, spring 2012

15

Clippings Spring 2012

Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association

She also says to realize that it’s not about you; it’s about theclient.

“You have to take your ego out of it. It’s not about you. Thedecisions that I make have to be the best decisions for theclient. It’s not for me to get off on doing a haircut, to colour it;it’s about the client to feel amazing about herself. And part ofmy job is to be able to say ‘no, that’s going to work’ and to behonest with someone. At the end of the day, it’s about takingcare of that person and taking yourself out of it; this includestalking about them, not talking about yourself; taking care ofthem, you know, not waffling on because you had a bad day oryou had a fight with your boyfriend or something.”

Coffey’s “in your face” honesty often gets her compared toother reality “villains” like Gordon Ramsay and Simon Cowell, something that she takes as a compliment.

“Gordon’s a lovely guy, I’ve met him several times and he’s areally lovely guy. Look, about the similarities between Gordonand I, he’s incredibly passionate about what he does and hedoesn’t mince words; and that’s why people have thatcomparison. Same thing with Simon; he says what he thinksand I do the same, that’s why people like to make similaritiesbetween us. It’s that honesty I guess, with Gordon especially,Gordon and I truly do share the passion for what we do. Heloves restaurants and being a chef and I love hairdressers andbeing a hairdresser.”

Coffey loves being a hairdresser so much that when asked ifshe could be in another industry other than that profession, she’s left speechless.

“I couldn’t imagine being anything but a hairdresser, to behonest with you. It’s all I’ve ever done or wanted to do.” $

DAMIEN CARNEY JUMPS on a plane the way most people hop ona bus.

Between splitting his time between three cosmopolitan cities (NewYork, London, and Los Angeles) and heading up his own mobilehairstyling academy, Carney is the international artistic director forJoico Laboratories, Inc., one of the leading salon beauty brands inthe world. Add to this the accolades of being one of the mostinfluential hairstylists of our time and having received numerousawards, not to mention that even a single appointment with himhas a year-plus waiting list, and it’s obvious to all that Carney is abonafide hair legend. However, although he has achieved whatmost stylists only dream of, to him he’s just plain ol’ Damien.

“I’m a very grounded and routine guy who comes from humblebeginnings. I don’t see myself other than as Damien Carney. Theseare just things I do every day. I go with the flow. You can have all

the awards all you want or the compliments; if you are makingyourself happy, it shows.”

Carney, the third-youngest of eight children, started his hair careerat University College Birmingham (known then as BirminghamCollege of Food and Domestic Arts) in Birmingham, UnitedKingdom. He decided to pursue hairstyling because of hissurroundings and the way that it changed people.

“My sisters were hair goddesses so it was natural for me to seethem get ready and cutting out Vogue patterns, making their owndresses. Hair was always around me. When I was in the barbershop, I was always fascinated when someone would sit in the chairand then a few minutes later, they looked so different. Everyonelooked like they were having a great time. I wasn’t academicallygreat; science was interesting, but calculating and reading thingsdidn’t excite me. Hair seemed like a natural thing to do.”

Joico International Artistic Director Damien Carney opens up on life, travelling, and what it takes to be a good hairdresser

Page 17: Clippings, spring 2012

Shortly after he completed school, Carney went to work withhair legend Trevor Sorbie, a visionary who created suchhairstyles like The Wedge, The Chop, and The Scrunch.Sorbie mentored Carney at the ripe age of 27 and enabledhim to polish his work.

“He changed my world. I did some retraining and I thought Iwas good, but you don’t really know what’s good until you seewhat’s good and what’s not. He was a great mentor;he spent time and was patient with me. You are aresult of your mentor and breeding and what youbelieve and your philosophy. My work went from beinggood to super-polished. It was the best investment Ihave ever made in my life.”

Currently, Carney travels the world with Joico, educating about the brand and teaching the lateststyles. He also travels to salons as part of his mobilehair academy Damien Carney London, which hespearheaded in 2006. Damien Carney London allowssalons to affordably learn from its namesake; instead ofthe whole business flying somewhere to learn from him,Carney will fly to them and assist them any way he can.

“Most academies set up where they are located.Academies are a learning environment and often whenyou attend one, you may have to go to a different city.Sometimes it’s not affordable, so I’ll go to people and do aone-day or two-day program and do what they want. Ican work in their environment and tailor-make a programto suit them; it becomes more personable to them andcost-effective. Rather than all of them flying to one place, they can have one person flying – me. They can buy me,use me, abuse me; but the most important role is to fulfiltheir goal of the training’s purpose. There are all differentskill sets, but they have to have a ‘light-bulb moment’ whenthey leave.”

Creating that light-bulb moment is very important forCarney, and he cannot stress enough the value of educationand to never stop learning.

“The general rule of thumb for anyone with a career is totrain, train, train; invest in yourself. Our industry changesquite a bit, very quickly, as cycles of fashion jump every fiveyears, so you need to be aware of that. To rest on your laurels on onething is a little foolish and before you know it, you’ll grow old with atechnique or with your clients. A clever hairdresser will still give amazingcolour but the regrowth won’t be as strong. Make more with someone’sbudget. Have fun, be creative, and be open to the world around you.Timing is a crucial thing. Learn from the best and seek out the best.” $

NO ONE CAN deny that when you take care of your bodywhichever way you choose, a happy, healthy body is whatpeople strive to achieve. Reflexology is a safe and effective wayto stimulate the whole body without any adverse reactions.

Reflexology dates back thousands of years and most culturesaround the world have picked up some form of this therapyand called it their own. The body has not changed and we allhave the same bones, muscles, and nerve endings. The crazything about this complex system is that all our bodies do notrun the same. There is multitude of reasons on why we allhave different reactions to external and internal stress in thebody. The bottom line is that everybody's life is different andour bodies only work to the best of its ability.

Reflexology is great therapy for everyone. There is no age limitto this therapy; therapists have worked on newborns to theterminally ill and everyone in between. This is an alternativeapproach to treating the body and all its functions as natural aspossible. When you receive a reflexology session from alicensed therapist, every organ, body part, and gland will beworked on through the hands, feet, or ear. You have over7,000 nerve endings in your feet that can be stimulatedthrough applied pressure and massage. By increasing thelymphatic flow through these motions, the body tends to riditself of all bacteria, viruses, and sometimes even disease. When blood flow is increased throughout the body, all partsthat are not functioning at its best get a constant flow of bloodto them and that is when the body starts to heal itself.

By stimulating pressure and massage, your body will increaseblood flow to the areas of concern and get that sluggishlymphatic system running clear and freely so no disease canbe trapped and cause further problems.

Some issues that are very effective in treating throughreflexology are: • Stress (which is the number one cause of disease in oursociety)

• Headaches • Bowel disorders (such as constipation) • Pregnancy issues • Hip/knee/shoulder problems • Spinal problems (back issues) • Plantar Facciitis • Pre- and post-surgery(great for healing the body at a faster pace)

• Hormonal disorders • Fractures in the foot (the more stimulation to the area, the quicker it will heal insomnia)

• Edema (any swelling in the body) • Diabetes (neuroma-related problems)

There is no limit to what reflexology can do to help anindividual with restoring the body and getting it back to thehappy, healthy way we want to feel.

EVERY YEAR, STUDENTS in the skilled trades and technologysectors compete for their chance to win gold at the SkillsManitoba Competition, a competition where students participate inchallenges designed to test skills required in their respectivetrades and technology careers.

Clippings managing editor Shayna Wiwierski spoke with MelindaVandenberg, who is the chair of the Provincial HairstylingTechnical Committee, about Skills Canada, the committee itself, and why students should compete.

Shayna Wiwierski: Tell me about the Provincial HairstylingTechnical Committee, what do you do and when do youmeet?

Melinda Vandenberg: Every year we get together andwe meet four to five times a year and develop the

scopes for the contests (such as the rules, regulations, and demerits). There are three contests in the Skills Manitoba

Competition – Beginners, Secondary, and Post-Secondary.

We have a group of people that consists of anyone who is involvedin hairstyling; so teachers, salon owners, hairstylists, etc. We alsoorganize a training session once a year for the secondary andpost-secondary level, so we get the venue, trainers, and handlethe registration for that.

For the day of the competition, we set up the area, mirrors, andtables, handle registration, and make sure everyone who isregistered for the competition is there. We also get the judges

together and make sure they are aware of where theyare going, what they are doing, and whatcompetition they are judging.

SW: Why is the Skills Canada Competitionimportant?

MV: It gives students an opportunity to seewhat competition is. It’s very sought afterbecause it’s a national competition. Even

if a student doesn’t place, it’s good toput on a resume to say that theyhave the ambition and drive.

They also meet people inthe industry. The

competition is held at Red River College and there is quite anaudience that attends. You see other people and they see you andit’s a good way to network in our community. If you do win amedal it’s an excellent way to feel good about yourself and thatyou accomplished something. If you win the gold it opens moredoors for you and more opportunities.

SW: How many people are on the Provincial Hairstyling TechnicalCommittee and how does one get involved?

MV: There are seven of us in total and we all have hairstylingbackgrounds. Most of us are teachers but anyone who has abackground in hairstyling can be a member of the technicalcommittee. It’s mostly word of mouth; in September I’ll shoot anemail out to all the teachers asking to be a member and whowould like to stay on. I’ll also email anyone that I can think of whowould want to be part of the committee, and I have asked peoplewho aren’t teachers before.

SW: What do you do at your meetings?

MV: We talk about whether or not we want to change the contestat all; little things have been changed from certain years, usuallyit’s things that haven’t worked too well, so we say let’s change it. Ifthere are changes, we make sure it gets done properly. We haveto submit scopes to the Province and it gets put on the [SkillsManitoba] website. We also make sure everything is still relevanton how we want to do things.

We also start looking at our training session and make sure thatthe place can hold a lot of people, we make sure our contacts arecorrect, and lately we have been asking for donations for a Bud,Spud, and Steak that Skills Manitoba puts on every year for thegold medal winners to fundraise their trip to the nationalcompetition.

SW: Why should one join the committee?

MV: It’s very organized and it’s a lot of fun. The people on thecommittee are there for the students and it’s a fun committee tobe on because we talk about the competition and we get involvedin it. It’s very rewarding watching the students during thecompetition.

For more information about the committee and how you can join, please contact Melinda Vandenberg at [email protected].$

BUILD IT AND THEY will come. This maybe true for some things, but notnecessarily your website.

All too often business owners will devotean extraordinary amount of time, effort, and money into a finished website withoutgiving proper consideration to traffic andhow to get people visiting the site. Thetraffic to your website is essential becausethose are the potential consumers andclients of your products and services. Asyou find more ways to grow and expandyour website traffic, you increase youropportunities for new clients and sales.

Increase Your Website’s Audience

Use these methods for building andgrowing an audience on your website. Before you begin, be sure to have setgoals in mind for your audience and howthey will interact with your website. Acommon goal is contact through a call or aform, while another more obvious one is asale. The goals are what you can use tomeasure an audiences' value to yourbusiness.

Google Analytics

Have you ever wondered who visits yoursite, what they do on your site, and wherethey are from? Google Analytics will helpyou answer those questions and manymore. Free to install and use, Google

Analytics shows you how people arefinding your website and which pages orcontent on your website are mostengaging. Once you have Google Analyticsinstalled on your website, allow the data tocollect for 15 to 30 days, then startdigging! Reports that will help are topkeywords, top pages, and top referringsites – use these to start understandinghow people currently find your website. That will lead to an understanding of otheropportunities to expand those sources.http://www.google.com/analytics

Yahoo Answers

Most people use the Internet to find ananswer to a question. Yahoo Answers is awebsite that people post questions on andhave a community answer thosequestions, with the most helpful answersbeing voted to the top. A great way to buildyour own website's traffic is to searchquestions related to your business thatneed answers and provide a relevantanswer along with your website address. An example would be to search forquestions on the best shampoo orconditioner or how to avoid hair dyingdisasters and write a brief response to thequestion, being sure to answer thequestion and offer more information onyour website with the address.http://answers.yahoo.com/

Blogging

Blogging is simply a short article oropinion on a topic that occurs with someregular frequency. Create a blog on yourwebsite and write for it at least twice aweek. Choose topics that relate closely toyour business or that have seasonal orspecial attributes that you can use topromote a product or service. Forexample, during graduation you may plan

to write some of the latest styles that willleave classmates saying 'wow'. Be sure toinclude an email or phone number in theblog post so that when you convince theaudience to contact you, the effort is aspainless as possible. There are a numberof free blogging sites available thatintegrate nicely with any website. One inparticular is http://www.blogger.com.

Link Exchanges

Linking from one site to another is themost simple of all traffic building you cando. Select websites that you haverelationships with already, such assuppliers, associations, chambers ofcommerce, to name a few. Contact theseindividuals and request a link from theirsite to yours and back to show that youhave a relationship and to help sharetraffic. Choose only websites that you havea relevancy with, otherwise the links lookartificial and will not be used. Considerwriting a blog post about a supplier or asupplier's product and contact thatsupplier to make them aware that you arepromoting a product of theirs – chancesare they will link back as a way of self-promotion, sending you some of theirtraffic.

Google Places

When you search Google for things like“Winnipeg hair salons”, you'll notice thatGoogle shows you hair salons locatedclose by in Winnipeg. These searches areoccurring more frequently and provide agreat opportunity to have your salon beseen by someone who doesn't knowwhich hair salon to choose in Winnipeg. The primary way that Google ranks thesebusinesses is by the number of reviewsthey have from customers and clients. Agreat way to generate new traffic for your

website is by setting up a Google Placespage and asking existing customers andclients to give your salon reviews.Motivating your customers and clients toreview your business on Google alwayshelps as well – try a contest usingevery review as an entry for somefree products or a service.http://www.google.com/places/

Google AdWords

Ever notice the ads that appear on Googlesearch results at the top and side of thepage? Anyone can purchase those ads todrive traffic to their website. GoogleAdWords allows you to choose keywordsthat people search for and place youradvertisement on the results for thatsearch. You set the price that you arewilling to pay for a click on your ad andyou only pay when a click occurs. Thatclick is traffic being sent to your websitethat has an alignment of the user's search

to your business. The better you get atselecting keywords to place your ads on,the better the traffic gets for yourwebsite's goals. A well-thought-out set ofkeywords can drive a significant amountof traffic to your site at a cost that youselect. Creating a Google AdWordsaccount is free and they will give yousuggestions and estimations on startingwith AdWords. http://adwords.google.com

No matter which methods you choose totry and increase traffic to your website, besure to have a goal or goals in mind forthat traffic. Your website goals need to bethe measure of success for any strategyyou use to drive traffic to your site.Patience is key when planning onincreasing your online audience; thesestrategies will not necessarily workovernight to bring you crowds of new andpotential clients. However, over the courseof a few months, you will notice adifference.

As an added encouragement toexperiment with some of these strategies,I have five $100 Google AdWordsvouchers to give away. If you would like achance at $100 to start your GoogleAdWords campaign, please email me [email protected] with a subject line of “$100for Google AdWords”.

Employers reap rewards

For employers, apprenticeship is an attractive, cost-effectiveway to develop highly skilled, productive employees. The new gel polishBy Gordon Ashdown

I THOUGHT I would take a walk on thewild side and talk about the new productcategory being created by suchmanufacturers as Shellac from CND,Polish Pro from NSI, and many more. The category is a hybrid – not a real gel,and not a nail polish, but somewhere inbetween. They apply like a polish in thatyou paint them on with a brush, but thenyou cure them in an ultra-violet light like

a conventional gel. It’s a straight-forwardbase coat, colour, top coat application, and it lasts longer than polish, but not aslong as gel. The application is removedwith a soak in acetone, whether in thesalon or at home. Many claims are madeas to how long the application will lastand most agree that a week or so on thehands, and two weeks or so on toes isabout normal. It’s been said that gel

polish can last for five or even six weekson toes. Now that’s performance!

Now so far I haven’t told you anythingyou don’t already know. Here’s wheresome confusion still exists as to what todo with this interesting new product. Some nail technicians have moved theirgel clients to this category. Some polishclients have been moved to gel polish, and what have we accomplished? Wemust remember that this product hascreated a new category altogether. It fillsthe space between gel and regular nailpolish. Remember, not all polish clientswant to be bothered using acetone toremove the polish, and few gel clientswant to lose the great wear ability of gel.So focus on the “category” and not onswitching your clients to this great newproduct. Make sure you know what eachclient is looking for before you suggestthey switch. Keep in mind, as always, it’sall about the client. Ask about the client’slifestyle; do they spend hours on akeyboard? Do they do dishes every day?Are they gardeners? Mechanics? Thisall helps determine if you should suggestthey move to this category. Rememberthat you’re the expert, and that you need

to ask questions before yourecommend.

Clippings Spring 2012

Now about the new products coming

soon to a distributor near you. It

seems that to build in more wear,

manufacturers are trying to make their

product more gel-like. That sounds

good, right? Well then, why not just go

to a soak-off gel? Well we’ve likely

been doing just fine with our clients for

years with regular gel, right? So, then

where should manufacturers go with

this? Some of my clients have some

suggestions. If gel works for you and

your clients are happy with it, don’t

rock the boat. If you need to get your

pedicure clients out the door quickly

and safely with no smudges, or just

keep their polish looking good longer,

maybe this is for that client.

Now please don’t be too hard on me

for what I’m about to say. Most

manufacturers / distributors have

deemed that you don’t have to be gel

trained to use the “gel polish” products.

From my point of view, you still need to

know all about sanitation, how to

properly file, good product application,

and so on, for the best and safest

result for your client. This is an ideal

situation for someone doing hair

services to help fill up their day

profitably and add new tools to their

toolbox. After all, a busy day, a happy

client, and a good income are about as

good as it gets! $

HAIR SMOOTHING TREATMENTS are a highly popular and in-demand salon service. What should stylists and consumersknow about hair texturizing options?

Smooth or straighten. Smoothers can reduce curl volume andfrizziness from 30 to 100 per cent. Variants include priorchemical processes, existing hair damage, and the degree ofnatural genetic frizziness and curl. Smoothing effects diminishover time, generally eight to 12 weeks.

Vegan vs. keratin. Keratin protein comes from animal sources. For those who wish to avoid consuming animal products, lookfor keratin-free vegan options in the formulation such asproteins from corn, wheat, oats, and soybeans.

Prior use of chemical processes. Regular use of flat iron stylingor harsh chemical smoothing treatments can destroy hair.Ensure highest quality results by conducting a pre-treatmentclient consultation. Strengthen and repair damaged hair with aseries of reconstructive protein treatments before schedulingthe smoothing session.

Safety first. Smoothing treatments use high flat iron heat to

open the hair cuticle. For clients with prior chemical processes, there are likely residual chemicals on the hair. These maybecome an airborne irritant to stylist, client, or others. Check ifit is safe for use over colour, highlights, or bleach. Are gloves, masks, venting, or barrier balms on the scalp required? Onlysome systems are approved for use around or on pregnantwomen.

Maintaining the look. Smoothing treatments will reduce frizz, decrease daily styling time, and eliminate or reduce curl. Clientupkeep is essential. An effective after care program of speciallyformulated products will enhance shine and manageability, maintain hair moisture, and prolong effects of the treatment.

Smoothing treatments can transform lives and reduce timespent on daily beauty routines. Just choose carefully. Achievingbeauty at the price of health is just not worth it!
