AN ESCORTS BACKSTAGE VIEWWarren Taylor of Northampton County

agrees with most all former Dress Revueparticipants in saying he still can't believethat a graceful, colorful and beautiful dis-play of pretty girls in beautiful dresses, suits, ensembles, and evening gownsresulted from those first futile attemptsat organization of the Revue.

Warren was picked by his assistantHome Economics Extension Agent, Mrs.Clyde (Mildred) Jenkins to represent hiscounty by modeling a suit from the ”VillageSquire, " one of Raleigh's most outstanding

young men's shops. He considers beingasked to model the suit and also to escortone of "those charming girls" quite anhonor and is sure he will remember itfor many years to come.

Following a period of organizationand division into groups, a representativefrom the Simplicity Pattern Companycame to teach the young ladies and gentle-men how to properly walk and also how tomodel. Warren was very interested inthis because he felt many people weresure to notice a boy who carries himselfwell.

Then came all the fun, rehersal.According to Warren, three and one halfhours of practicing was tiring, but it wasworth it. Warren is looking forward tonext year and the years to follow whenhe will once again be seeing the manyfriends he met this year in the DressRevue at State 4-H Club Week.

The menu consisted of: peas, chicken, ham, tea, rolls, butter and coconut pie,

However, greater food for thought wasdelivered by Dr, T, C, Blalock, State 4=HLeader, Special guests, including CharlesPage, camp director at Betsmeeff Penn, were recognized, A highlight of entertain-ment was talent numbers by Beth Payne ofAlexander County and Ronnie Brown ofCatawba County, Our greatest appreciationgoes to Cities Service Oil Company, thedonor of the Key Award Scholarships, Mr,H, D, Sanford, District Representative ofCITGO, then presented the 1968 Key AwardScholarships, Before 1964 only two werebestowed each year, However, since thisdate four scholarships are presented annually,This years recipients are as follows:

Linda Ritchie, Wake County, who plansto major in clothing or elementary educa-tion at the University of North Carolina atGreensboro. She ranked twelth in hergraduating class of seven hundred andseventymfive,

In his address Dr, Blalock pointed outthe objectives ofvthe 4~=H Key Award Pro=~gram, First, it is necessary to recognizeachievement on the county level, Next, because of the tendency of older members

to relinquish club work, a program wasneeded in order to hold these individuals,Receiving this recognition might alsochallenge the youth to have a strongervoice in. their community, Finally, theprogram was established in an effort toenrich citizenship as a fourufold program=== head, heart, hands, and health.

Much of Dr, Blalock's talk concernedthe importance of training at early age,He reassured all that "training buildsleaders, and yes, track phenomenonssuch as the great Jesse Owens. "

Training gives the individual a purposeand direction to the extent that one puresues his goals with enthusiasm, Thisenthusiasm continues to grow to the point

"Boils over and runs down theside of the pot, " The effect is "conta-geous, ” according to Dr° Blalock, "Afriendliness and genuine interest andaffection for people is developed. " Apersonal integrity is prevalent, which"will not betray trust, " With trainingone strives to attain the 4—H motto anddevelop a "technical mastery in any fieldhe wishes. " However, a person trainedalong the right lines will understandthat all cannot be No, l and therefore”will put himself in the other personsplace, ” Dr° Blalock said,

LONG WAIT FOR RUNNER LEAVES 4—H'ERS BREATHLESS

It took Eastern Airlines to slow Jesse Owens down for his visit to State 4—HClub Week at Raleigh.

Jesse Ownes, Olympic Championand tract star, came into Raleigh withenthusiasm. Reflected in the eyes ofthis reporter and the other membersof the official welcoming committee atthe Raleigh-Durham Airport WednesdayNite. The intensity of the "OwensSpirit” remained on Campus after he left.

Seriously . . . and WarmlyConcerned. . . When the plane arrived, more than Confident.

an hour late, Lyman Dixon of the StateStaff, Peggy Shaw, Guilford County were on hand with a small crowd of people whohad heard of the arrival of this athelete and idol of youngsters the world over.

"Clover Leaves“ questions put to Mr. Owens prompted quick answers.Young people of America were on Mr. Owens mind, and most of his answerscame quickly with honest concern for the future of his country and the youngstersaround the world.

”Young people should get a good education. But a goal is necessary alongwith incentive and the will to achieve. And, it is based on a good education, " hecommented.

Physical fitness figured in some of the basics Mr. Owens called necessaryfor a good life. As in the case of an athelete, ”. . . his Success depends on hiscoach and the coach's ability. But the individual must have interest, willingnessto achieve, determination and confidence, " Mr. Owens added.

"The greatest moment in my career as an athelete was when I won the "100meter" in the Olympics after dreaming, and working for eight years. "

This reporter listened closely to Mr. Owens advice, as the morningassembly throngs did. "A good listener receives more than the talker, " he hadsaid earlier.

The ”Clover Leaves" Staff (above) have names individually, but during State4-H Club Week, these journalists answer to most any reasonable name--especiallyif there is a good story connected. If one of these active 4-H'ers has talked withyou, then you know his or her name. "Clover Leaves" editor, Bill Gulley; andAssoc. Editor and typist, Janice Nixon, were fortunate to get this and the photobelow "locked-up" by press time, much less identified person-by-person.

Radio and TV 4—H'ers worked just as hard as other members of the "media"—-Reese Edwards, Hal Ryenolds and Ruth Sheehan will tell you. Whithout all, coverage of this special week would not be possible.
