Cut the Pieces Note: The border strips are all cut along the lengthwise grain for the entire length of the fabric yardage and then trimmed to the required length. This eliminates seaming border strips and helps ensure that your on-point quilt will be true and “square.” Cut other strips across the fabric width.

Assemble the Quilt Top

1. Make 4 Hearts Aligned blocks for the border corner squares. Set aside.

2. Arrange the sashing cornerstones and triangles with sashing strips in the sashing units shown. Sew together and press all seam allowances toward the sashing strips. Make 2. Figure 1.

3. Arrange the side setting triangles and the remaining sashing strips with the blocks in the combinations shown and sew together. Press all seam allowances toward the sashing strips. Figure 2.

4. Arrange the units from step 2 and 3 in the diagonal setting shown and sew together. Press all seam allowances toward the sashing strips. Add the corner setting triangles and press the seam allowances toward the sashing. Figure 3.

5. Sew 2 Medium #6 border strips to opposite edges of a Light #1 border strip. Press the seam allowances toward the Medium strips. Make 4. Figure 4.

6. Measure the quilt-top length and width through the center. They should be the same or close to the same. Using the measurement (or an average of the two if they are different), trim the 4 assembled border strips from step 5 to this length.

7. Sew a border corner square (Hearts Aligned Block) to opposite edges of two of the border strips and press the seam allowances toward the border strips (see Figure 5).

8. Sew the border strips to the quilt-top center as shown and press all seam allowances toward the borders. Figure 5.

Finish the Quilt1. Cut one of the two backing panels in half lengthwise

and sew one half-width panel to each long edge of the remaining panel. Press the seam allowances toward the center panel. Trim to 73” square.

2. Layer the quilt top with the batting and backing and pin- or hand-baste the layers together. Quilt as desired. Trim the excess batting and backing even with the quilt-top edges.

3. Sew the binding strips together with diagonal seams and press the seams open. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing and press. Finish the quilt edges with 1⁄4”-wide finished binding. Miter the corners as you reach them.

4. Don’t forget to add a label.
