Tourism as the only economic activity showing
resilience during the crisis;
In Portugal Tourism represents 10% of the GDP
generating 8 % of the total of employ;
The EU is facing a highest youth unemployed ever
witnessed.
However…
Skills mismatch the fundamental problem hampering
the competitiveness of the tourism industry.
To keep its position Europe needs to provide high
quality client service to face competitiveness from
other non-EU destinations.
It is needed a
Tourism Workforce Development Strategy
How do we respond?
• Alliance between education providers, industry, institutional
stakeholders, EC to discuss the level of skills or experience
required by businesses;
• Clear actions writing down in a Workforce Planning Framework
with priority areas and an Action Plan;
Pan-European Dialogue
Conference using the results
of the “Mapping and
performance check of the
supply side”
Employs mostly young people aged between 16
and 35 with a high share of female employment
We need…
• Training and Internship Programmes addressing small family
businesses under Cosme Programme;
• Tourism “ERAMUS+” a Industry exchange programme to
upgrade employees and employers skills and competences.
Tourism a career of choice
• Bottom-up approach for developing communication and
marketing tools: national campaigns targeting specific public;
• Formation and Training programmes focus on the Tourism
needs for unemployed persons;
• Dissemination of a Guide with Best Practices.
