Using Mouth Morphemes to Help Describe Clothing& & Accessories
What are Mouth Morphemes?
• Mouth Morphemes, also referred to as Non-manual Signals (NMS), are used to convey meaning of a sign.
• NMS refer in general to those aspects of ASL which do not involve the use of hands.
• NMS are extremely important in ASL.
What role do NMS play?
• 6 different roles:
1. Reflections of emotional states
2. Constructed action
3. Conversation regulators
4. Lexical
5. Grammatical markers
6. Modifiers (Adverbs)
Using Mouth Morphemes as Grammatical Markers/Lexical
• Mouth Morphemes:
–“OO”: Small in size (Spaghetti straps)
–“MM”: Medium/Average in size (Watch)
–“CHA”: Large in size (Glasses)
Describe the picture
• Get with a partner and describe the picture using the correct mouth morphemes.
– “OO” (Small in size)
– “MM” (Medium/Average in size)
– “CHA” (Large in size)
