Cloud Computing

CLOUD COMPUTING

BY VARINDER SINGH WALIA

WHAT IS THE CLOUD? WHERE IS THE CLOUD? ARE WE IN THE CLOUD NOW? Cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer's hard drive. The cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet.

HISTORY OF CLOUD COMPUTINGIn 1999, Salesforce.com started delivering of applications to users using a simple website. The applications were delivered to enterprises over the Internet, and this way the dream of computing sold as utility were true.In 2002, Amazon started Amazon Web Services, providing services like storage, computation and even human intelligence. However, only starting with the launch of the Elastic Compute Cloud in 2006 a truly commercial service open to everybody existed. In 2009, Google Apps also started to provide cloud computing enterprise applications.

ADVANTAGES OF CLOUD COMPUTING

1) Lower cost computer for users2) Lower IT infrastructure cost3) Fewer maintenance cost4) Unlimited storage capacity5) Instant software updates6) Lower Software Cost

DISADVANTAGES OF CLOUD COMPUTING

1) Require a constant Internet Connection2) Require High Speed Internet connection3) Stored Data Might Not Be Secure

TYPES OF CLOUD PUBLIC CLOUD PRIVATE CLOUD HYBRID CLOUD

PUBLIC CLOUD-Public cloud allows the accessibility of systems and services easily to general public. Eg: Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, Google, Rackspace etc.

Advantages of Public Cloud ModelLow CostReliableFlexibleLocation IndependentHigh Scalability

Disadvantages1.Low security 2. Less customizable

PRIVATE CLOUD The Private cloud allows the accessibility of systems and services within the organization. Private cloud is operated only within a particular organization. But it will be managed internally or by third party.

Advantages of Private Cloud ModelHigh security and privacy More Control

Disadvantages of Private Cloud Model1) Restriction2) More Cost3) Inflexible price4) Less Scalability

Hybrid Cloud The Hybrid cloud is the mixture of public and private cloud. Non-critical activities are performed by public cloud while critical activities are performed by private cloud.

Advantages of Hybrid Cloud ModelScalable Flexible and secureCost effectiveDisadvantages1) Networking issues2) Security Compliance

CLOUD COMPONENTSIt has three components 1.) Client computers2.) Distributed Servers3.) Datacenters

CLIENTSClients are the device that the end user interact with cloud. three types of clients:1.) Mobile2.) Thick3.) Thin (Most Popular)

DatacenterIt is collection of servers where application is placed and is accessed via internet.

DISTRIBUTED SERVERSOften servers are in geographically different places, but server acts as if they are working next to each other.

CENTRAL SERVERIt Administers the system such as monitoring traffic, client demands to ensure everything runs smoothly. It uses a special type of software called Middleware.Middleware allow computer to communicate each other.

SERVICE MODELSSaaS(Software as a service): Required software, Operating system & network is provided.PaaS(Platform as service): Operating system and network is provided.IaaS(Infrastructure as a service): just Network is provided.

DEPLOYMENT OF CLOUD SERVICEPublic CloudPrivate CloudCommunity CloudHybrid Cloud(Combined Cloud)

WHY CLOUD SERVICE IS POPULAR?Reduce the complexity of networks.Do not have to buy software licenses.Customization.Cloud providers that have specialized in a particular area (such as e-mail) can bring advanced services that a single company might not be able to afford or develop. scalability, reliability, and efficiency.Info. at cloud are not easily lost.

Scalability means Unlimited processes and storage capacity.17
