The Fight for Recognition – An Exhibition on the Name Rectification of Hla’alua and Kanakanavu TribesIn June 2014, Taiwanese aborigines were blessed with the addition of two new groups, increasing the number of Taiwanese aborigine groups from 14 to 16. The newcomers reside in the territory of Kaohsiung near the southern, mountainous region of the Central Mountain Range. Despite having lived in Taiwan for several centuries, the two ethnic groups remained relatively unknown. These two groups of Taiwanese aborigines are called the “Hla’alua” and the “Kanakanavu”. However, prior to being called by their actual names, they had been frequently referred to as the ”Tsou” or the “Southern Tsou.” Why did people take away their names and why were they referred to as the Tsou People? Where did they come from? What legends do they have? And most importantly, how did they rectify their name? This exhibition will tell the story of two indigenous peoples fighting for their proper names.

Forum for Creativity in Art - Surface Epidermis: Phil SayersBritish artist Phil Sayers masquerades as a woman in his photographic works, employing a process which satisfies both the needs of his personal gender identification and his art creation. Many of Sayers’ works derive their subject matter from historical works by predominantly male artists from the 18th and 19th centuries, in particular from traditional paintings and

sculptures featuring young women as their subjects. Sayers’ art, however, clearly criticizes and subverts the stereotypical images of women full of youthful beauty, often portrayed as voluptuous objects of desire, which have featured in so much art throughout patriarchal Western society in particular. The title “Surface Epidermis,” adopted by curator Ming Turner for this exhibition, alludes to an analysis of the social and cultural issues of gender identity, cross-dressing, masquerading and performance in Sayers’ works from the cultural perspective of a biological epidermis. This exhibition provides an outlook with intersecting perspectives based both on gender conflicts and on different gender viewpoints; it provides viewers with an opportunity to escape from the conceptual fetters imposed by mainstream society, and to realize the depth and inter-actability of the relevant discourses of gender.

Media is Everything—Art of Lu Ming-teLu stresses that, in this era of information media, the force of media is something that cannot be ignored. Looking back at the development of Western art, starting from Dadaism and Pop Art to the artists’ embrace of found objects and mass media, Lu predicted back in 1998 that such a transition would have a significant influence on Taiwan’s art development in the future. His prediction seemed to have served as a trailblazer, providing guidance for the mainstream trends of Taiwan’s art development in the following two or three decades. From this exhibition, comprising the four main themes of Media Expansion, Environmental Installation, Encounter with Technology, and Cultural Mimicry, viewers can see how Lu has been adhering to his core concept and continuing with his artistic creation through dialogues with, conversion, citation and/or juxtaposition of different media and materials to reveal their existing value systems.

Gallery for Citizens— The True, Good and Beautiful of Kaohsiung- Solo Exhibition of Chen Jui-huBorn in 1957, Chen Jui-hu had his first solo exhibition in Taipei in 1978. Long dedicated to honing his techniques of palette knife oil painting techniques, Chen is known for his gentle and fresh depictions of natural landscape and people’s life, particularly those in Kaohsiung where he has been living for nearly half a century. Chen is a self-taught artist without any previous academic training. He is characterized with his use of one single painting knife instead of painting brushes. This exhibition is his third solo exhibition in the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, showcasing his works that portray the people, natural environment and industrial development of Kaohsiung. These works not only show Chen’s deep attachment to his hometown but also celebrate the true, good and beautiful of Kaohsiung.

Three years after Lin’s passing, the KMFA is holding this exhibition, displaying mostly the works from Ms. Yan’s donations and several works borrowed from other art institutions. It is hoped that, through this exhibition, the public can appreciate again the works of an art master who has left the world and also understand the timeless values of art.

6.13-8.23 ■KMFA Galleries 201-203Resonance of Heteroglossia—On the Modern Art Association of KaohsiungEstablished in September 1987, the Modern Art Association of Kaohsiung is the first modern painting organization in Kaohsiung officially registered with the government after the lifting of martial law. In the late 1980s, to improve the poorly nourished art environment in Kaohsiung, the members of the Association challenged the institutions and adamantly played their roles as guardians and catalysts of art development. In addition to promoting the establishment of the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the

Association also spared no effort in amplifying the voice of Kaohsiung in art circles nationwide. By making the above-mentioned contributions, the Association established itself as the spokesperson of Kaohsiung’s art back in the 80’s and 90’s. Throughout its process of establishment, development and stabilization, the Association has always served as a highlight of Kaohsiung’s art and culture. Both the Association as a whole and its individual members have played crucial roles as the major participants, champions and architects of the environment of modern art in Kaohsiung. It is hoped that, through the works, research findings, documents and records in this exhibition, the historical importance of the Association and its members can be duly recognized while an invaluable chapter of Kaohsiung’s modern art development can be well-preserved.

Looking back at the development of avant-garde art in Taiwan, we find that the art of body performance is closely connected with southern Taiwan, which provides fertile soil for many performance artists and also for the body art that has long been marginalized. In this summer of 2015, we introduce a classic international exhibition of performance art and then compare its development with what we have in Taiwan to draw references for each other. With the performance records of Marina Abramović, mother of the performance art, as its core, this exhibition not only features the classic works of performance art in the West from the 1960s to now but also presents the current development of body art in Taiwan under the influence of avant-garde art from abroad. Combining historical, international and local perspectives, this exhibition is the most comprehensive and largest exhibition of body action art so far in Taiwan.

2.1.2015-2.28.2016 ■CMA Gallery 101 Birth DayThe egg is a symbol of life, a seed of life, or a carrier of life. It is also a carrier of immense imagination. To celebrate its 10th

anniversary, the Children’s Museum of the Arts holds this exhibition, Birth Day: Breaking Out of the Egg, to not only glorify the meanings and values of life but also inspire children to have different imaginations and interpretations of the egg through the works created by the participating artists. It is hoped that through this exhibition, children can learn how to discover extraordinary things from the ordinary in daily life through imagination and association, as well as know how to better express their own feelings and thoughts, and explore different possibilities through their sensory experiences and learning.

A glimpse of exhibition

7.4.2015-11.20.2016 ■CMA Gallery 201 Enjoy Writing !This exhibition consists of four units, which explore Chinese characters and the art of writing. All ancient characters originated from pictorial forms, which is why the earliest characters, which were written on bone and tortoise shell more than 3000 years ago, are still partially intelligible, and they reveal that the original concepts of their construction were derived from the myriad forms of the natural world. “Where do characters come from?” leads us into the world of Chinese characters and challenges our imagination. We often say that characters resemble the people who wrote them, and the

curves of strokes change according to the personality of their creators. The different forms of different calligraphic styles all have their own charm. “Expressions of characters” ponders how different calligraphic styles can be paired with different spatial and architectural functions. Many calligraphic classics have been made during the course of history; why do certain famous works have such magnetic appeal for viewers? “Timeless characters” relates the story of a famous calligraphic work. How should we look at writing that has drifted away from its practical function? Should we consider it a work made purely of lines? Or should we, when combined with the painting, see it as a manifestation of the adage that “painting and calligraphy derive from the same source? “Infinitely varied characters” conveys characters' diverse shapes and forms.

Toward the end of Yuan dynasty, the married couple, Jhang, Siang-Bo and You, Shu-Lian, became separated from each other due to war. Siangbo was captivated by government soldiers and became the fiancé of the female general Haiya Lina. When Shu-Lian decided to hang herself upon hearing the news, she fortunately met Liou, Bo-Wun and along with her mother-in-law went to seek the protection of Jhu, Yuan-Jhang. One day, Liou Bo-Wun contrived a deft stratagem: he sent Shu-Lian and her mother-in-law to deliver moon cakes with hidden slips inside saying, “On the 15th of August we shall rise to kill the barbarians, and we act on the roar of cannons”. Yet, at the battlefield standoff, Siang-Bo accidently shot Shu-Lian with his arrow...

The Former Japanese Navy Fongshan Communication Center (FJNFCC) was an important military communication base for the Japanese army during the early twentieth century. Because of the drastic changes after World War II, the FJNFCC was used during the White Terror period as a location for interrogation and detention of prisoners (the FJNFCC was then called the “Fongshan Guest House”). The Fongshan Guest House, which had its name subsequently changed to the “Mingde Disciplinary Camp” (of the navy) and the “Mingde Naval Training Center,” was utilized for the disciplining of discipline servicemen. To preserve this special military space, in 2010, the Ministry of Culture declared the FJNFCC a national monument. To provide the public with a green space to visit, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs (of the Kaohsiung City Government) acted on behalf of the Ministry of National Defense to oversee Mingde Naval Training Center operations; the Mingde Naval Training Center is open to visitors Tuesday to Sunday.Following the efforts of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs (of the Kaohsiung City Government) and local communities, the Mingde Naval Training Center transformed from a center closed to the public and one that focused on military affairs and national defense to one that warmly and energetically welcomes its tourists; it teaches them about the history and stories that had taken place in the training center as well as tells them stories about the Japanese people’s ideas of architectural aesthetics.■Directions to the Mingde Naval Training Center✽By the KMRT: Get off at the Fongshan Jr. HS Station (Orange Line) and exit via Exit 3; walk in the direction of Shengli Rd. for

approximately 10 minutes.✽By car: Take Guanyuan Rd. (Fengshan Dist.) and turn left on Zhongshan E. Rd.; drive for approximately 500 meters and pass the

(enquire at the ERA Ticketing System)While Taiwanese folk music, including Fall in Love with Mt. Guanzihling, The Madam Who Sells Raw Oyster, and Spring Dances from Taiwan’s 4 Season Concerto will be performed to portray the rustic vitality of the land, some exotic music, such as barcarolles from Les Contes d'Hoffmann and Edelweiss, will also be played to give the audience a dose of foreign flair. Moreover, Beethoven will also be present to share with you the delight and comfort of taking in fresh air while meandering on a country road through the ensemble’s performance of his Pastorale Symphony.
