Make sure you have liked us on Facebook, added us on Instagram, followed us on Twitter and are ready for any-thing – we expect fierce (and hilarious) competition for the Conference Cup! You should also prepare yourself for Daily Dirt – Conference’s version of gossip girl. These add to your Conference experience and we welcome all those who participate in keeping with the true spirit of these traditions. During the week I also encourage you to thank the organising committee. I have had the pleasure of working with a fantastic, dedicated, and exceptional team – their time, effort, and enthusiasm has been absolutely in-valuable and I hope each delegate takes the time to appreciate their hard work. We also extend our thanks to our many Conference sponsors. Without their assistance, and the many volun-teers contributing their time during the week, Conference would not be possible. On behalf of the organising committee I hope our competitors, councillors, and delegates have a fantastic week. We hope that Conference 2014 is an unforgettable experience! Best Wishes,
Alexandra Bose
Welcome to Brisbane! On behalf of the Australian Law Students’ Association, and the organising com-mittee, I am very pleased to welcome you to Conference 2014. The ALSA Conference has been running annually since 1979 and undergone a great many changes since. We hope that this Conference meets your expectations for a busy week of educational and careers events, networking opportunities, and of course, stellar competition performance. We encourage you to get involved in everything on offer – the organising committee has invested months of effort to make sure each of our events offers something new and challenging to take away. A large part of the Conference experience is leaving with a host of new friends from across the nation and internationally (if you’re very lucky you may even run across the elusive New Zealand contingent). We hope you approach these events with enthusiasm, a willingness to engage with your fellow delegates, and a healthy dose of caffeine.
Convenor Welcome

Speaker: Professor Ian Frazer AC The first Legal Education Forum will explore the fascinating de-velopments in patent law involving human genes. In a landmark decision by the Federal Court of Australia last year, isolated human genes were ruled to be patentable, potentially changing the future of scientific and medical research in Australia. This Forum will explore this recent development and whether the safeguards preventing unconscionable commercial exploitation will be sufficient to protect Australian medical research, and whether this decision will lead to ethical and just outcomes.
Australian Legal Education Forum 2: Timor Sea Dispute
Date: Wednesday 9th July, 5:00 - 6:15pm, Location: GP-S410, QUT, Gardens Point Campus
If you’re interested in issues involving espionage, international law, seizure and arrest powers of security organi-sations and maritime boundaries, then this Legal Education Forum is for you! The Forum will explore legal and policy issues relating to the Timor Sea Dispute, providing an interactive and participation-driven approach to educating delegates on this topical subject. The Forum will cover the difficulties faced by Timor-Leste in taking disputes to an international tribunal, whether treaties can be wound back where issues of Espionage are involved and the process of bringing grievances to a dispute resolution body where security organisations may have breached their seizure and arrest powers.

The College of Law Advocacy Legal Skills Workshop will give students the opportunity to learn from experienced Barrister, and adjunct lecturer, Jane Fitzgerald. Advocacy and strong presenting skills are extremely important, not only for Bar-risters, but for lawyers and professionals seeking to succeed in any industry.

Careers Forum 1: Legal Careers Outside Big Firms
Date: Wednesday 9 July, 1:00pm – 2:30pmVenue: GP-B121, QUT, Gardnes Point Campus
This Forum will offer an insight in to the legal career paths open to students upon graduation. Many stu-dents graduate with a good understanding of the grad-uate process within large law firms, but are relatively uninformed about alternative options.
There are a wide range of jobs which directly use legal skills, and this forum will examine some of the most common. The forum will allow students to ask ques-tions and hear from, an academic, a barrister, a law-yer in a boutique firm, and a lawyer involved with a range of community legal centres. Together these four speakers represent an extremely large proportion of jobs which graduate lawyers go in to, but which most students have little understanding of. Whether it be how long it takes to become a professor, or whether it is feasible to work as a barrister without working as a solicitor first, this forum will give you the opportunity to ask the important questions.

King & Wood Mallesons Legal Skills Workshop
Date: Thursday 10 July, 9:30am – 11:00amVenue: GP-S409, QUT, Gardens Point Campus
The second legal skills workshop will explore a range of the skills utilised by graduates in law firms. While Law School can prepare you for the technical side, this workshop will explore some of the finer points which you can expect to encounter from your first day in the workforce. The workshop will be run by lawyers from King & Wood Mallesons and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about the firm.
The session will also go over some information about the graduate program within KWM; one of Australia’s leading law firms.
Ashurst Careers Forum 2: Corporate Career Options - Using your law de-gree in other industries
Date: Friday 11 July, 3:00pm – 4:30pmVenue: GP-B121, QUT, Gardens Point Campus
The last careers forum for the Conference will showcase some of the most exciting career options available upon graduation. Law students often have a good understanding of the legal pathways available to them, but do not consid-er how else their law degrees can be used.
This Q&A forum will host speakers from industry leading management con-sulting, professional services, investment banking, and law firms. These sectors regularly employ law graduates in extremely competitive and highly sought af-ter jobs. This forum will give attendees the opportunity to hear from the speak-ers about their industries generally, as well as about specific firm information.

As you will gather within the first few hours of arriving at the Oaks Festival Towers, it’s not all serious here at ALSA Conference. Which brings us to the Daily Dirt - a newsletter dropped off to each room outlining the gossip, news and announcements of the day.
Send your gossip and sneaky snaps to [email protected].
Don’t forget that we are also running Conference Cup, which awards points for challenges and con-duct within the spirit of Conference. A tally is kept for each university, and points are awarded or de-ducted for individual behaviour accordingly. Think Gossip Girl meeting the Sydney Morning Herald. A Hogwarts style points house points system is in place for the whole week. The winning university will receive glory and $1000 towards their LSS, to be awarded at the Closing Gala Ball.
Below is a selection of the Conference Cup challenges to whet your appetite. The full list of Challeng-es will be released each day in the Daily Dirt, along with being posted online from the facebook page.
• Drink a Queensland Cocktail at an event: 5 points• Rock climb at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs: 100 points• Attend every conference morning running session: 50 points• Win the Wet Tee-Shirt Competition at the Down Under Bar: 100 points• Convince someone you are a published author on the topic of Space Law: 20 points• Survive an entire night in the Fortitude Valley: 100 points, 50 additional points if you make it through the next day of Conference wearing the same clothes as the night before• Upload photos of the Opening Gala photobooth photos to Instagram: 30 points• Twerk on/to/with an ALSA Organising Committee Member (must be recorded!): 50 points• Shrek is love. WhatUQLS and L Card Opening Night: An unforgettable night to kick-off ALSA 2014! The theme this year is Mad Men. Think the early 1960s, before all the hippies started with all the peace and love, fringe-filled nonsense.

Dress CodeAsk yourself, ‘Would Don Draper approve?’ Dress to impress. For the men, suits are preferable but nice slacks and a dress shirt will also suffice. Cocktail dresses for the ladies are a must. Hats are strongly encouraged, and don’t be afraid to add a string of pearls, polka dot stockings or a neat pair of satin gloves. Oh, and big hair of course!

Socials: Cocktail Night
Mid-Week Cocktail Night
Law students (or, more accurately, students of any kind) are no stranger to mid-week drinks. Usually this would comprise a solitary glass of wine with Waltons Stores v Maher (probably in your pyjamas) or several very ill-advised ciders at the uni bar. In Conference week, however, things are a bit more nek level. Pick out your prettiest party frock and perfect your Pratt knot to ensure you cut a dash at mid-week cocktails at the Port Office Hotel (40 Edward St). The break will be announced, so this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate! Or commiserate. But that’s a celebration in itself.
Have questions? Luckily for you, we’ve answered our own below.
What time is kickoff?8 pm, Wednesday 9 July.
Can I carry on like a pork chop? You can’t but you also can. Bear in mind that we’re announc-ing the break, so maybe behave in a way that befits your status and dignity until after that, just in case you do break.
Does cocktail just mean that it’s finger food or is that also how I should dress?
Please do not come attired as a spring roll. Instead, ladies, now is the time for your prettiest short (but not too short, we’re not going to the Valley) dress and a tasteful amount of bling (not an oxymoron). Gentlemen, a lady can never resist a man in a suit. If you’re feeling dashing, you may leave your tie behind.
And yes, probably do eat dinner beforehand. Sometimes (i.e. when it comes to our duty to promote the responsible con-sumption of alcohol) eating is not cheating.

Socials: Pub Crawl
Pub Crawl
Forget marathons, Tough Mudder, climbing Mount Everest etc., ALSA’s pub crawl is the ultimate test of endurance. After starting at the Victory Hotel to warm things up, we then head over to the notorious Down Under Bar (affectionately known as Dunder) where tanned Europeans run amok – either that or the beer goggles are kicking in. The survivors then move onto Birdees for cheap drinks + dance floor = OH&S nightmare. Finally, we end the night with a jam jar at the local stomping ground for the young and beautiful, Oh Hello! Rumour has it that the ALSA Conference Committee has chipped in for a little something-something for all delegates, so let’s give Bris-bane a taste of the rowdiness and debauchery that law students are infamous for.
How to get thereMeet outside Oaks Festival Towers, and from there we begin the crawl over to Mick O’Malleys
Date and timeThursday, 10th July from 7pm until late
What to wearYour pub crawl t-shirt, underpants (never forget), pants/skirt/shorts, and comfortable shoes – you’ll need them!
