    INTRODUCTION

Tis paper was adapted rom akeynote address delivered at SMBNation 2011 by Matt Urmston.

Matt has worked in the I industryor more than twenty years, ocusingon backup, disaster recovery, andarchiving solutions. He has worked

as a technical marketing manager, asales engineer, a product manager, and as an independent consultantor Legato/EMC. Currently, he issenior technical product manageror StorageCra echnologyCorporation.

You cant go anywhere in the I world these days withouthearing about the cloud. It seems to be everywhere, in everynew product, the solution to every problem.

But as with any hot new trend, youre probably wonderingi the cloud, cloud computing, or cloud-based backuplive up to the hype. Is this something you should useyoursel? I youre a managed service provider (MSP) or

a value-added reseller (VAR), is it something you shouldrecommend to your clients?

Beore you jump in, you need to know how the cloud ispositioned today, understand its many value propositions, and look at how you can get the most out o it in your ownbusiness.

    ARE THERE BRIGHT SKIES AHEAD?

I you listen to the marketers o the world, using the cloud or backup, storage, and disaster recovery seems like a no-brainer.

A simple Internet search yields countless testimonials on itsmaniold benets, some o which might include the ollowing:

Customers are not dependent on a single server.

Data stored in the cloud can be distributed across a wide array

o servers, which are oen geographically disparate. Since everymachine will ail sooner or later, storing data in the cloud seems tooer good protection.

Customers have no direct hardware dependency.

In addition to not having to worry about the ailure o a singleserver, cloud adopters dont necessarily need to have any hardwareon-site. Tis can reduce costs, among other benets.

Customers can purchase and expand cloud services

dynamically.Whether a cloud adopter is purchasing storage or the rst time orgrowing what they currently have, the pay-as-you go model makesit easy to get just the right amount. Tis applies not only to storagespace, but to hardware and to dedicated I sta as well.

Customers can maintain business continuity in the case of a

    site disaster.

Even though most disasters are smaller in scope, businessesalways need to prepare or the possibility o a large-scaledisruption o their site. Everything rom hurricanes to tornadosto construction trucks accidently driving through an ofce havedemolished businesses in the past and they will continue doing soin the uture. Having data stored in the cloud protects it rom suchon-site disasters.

Customers can provision virtual storage containers that are

larger than the physical space available.

Te advent o virtual technology has made it possible or cloudadopters to create storage that is larger than the physical serverthats hosting it, cutting costs.

Customers can access all of their storage from a single inter-

    face anywhere in the world.

Whether its on a computer, a smart phone, or some other device, cloud adopters have access to their data anywhere.

    OR JUST THUNDER CLOUDS?

Looking at these benets, its easy to get swept away by thecloud.

Unortunately, theres thunder on the horizon. Te truthis that theres still a lot o uncertainty about the cloud. Forexample, Larry Ellison, the CEO o Oracle, recently toldthe Wall Street Journal,

Te interesting thing about cloud computing is thatweve redened cloud computing to include everythingthat we already do. I cant think o anything that isntcloud computing with all o these announcements.Maybe Im an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone istalking about. What is it? Its complete gibberish. Itsinsane. When is this idiocy going to stop?1

Ellisons quote appears in an article called Oracles EllisonNails Cloud Computing, suggesting the CEO is not alonein his suspicions and conusion. But the darkened sky ismore than simply uncertainty at the proper way to use the

latest marketing buzzword. In practice, the cloud has runinto some serious problems. Consider, or example, thissmall selection o headlines rom the last ew years:

    AmazonCloudGoesDown,TakesEveryHotStartupWith It2

    Google,Microsocloudcrashes:Isthisthenewnormal?3

    WhyAmazonscloudTitanicwentdown4

    EMCAtmosGoesOine5

    AppleMobileMegetsDe-Mobilized6

    Gmailoutagepasses24hoursforsome7

Te consistency with which major cloud providers haveailed is alarming and some experts predict that it willonlygetworse.AccordingtoGartner,By2014,amajorcloud-computing service provider will suer a cascadingailure, resulting in unrecoverable data loss and permanentbusiness impact or multiple customers.8

PARTLY CLOUDY WITH A CHANCEOF RAIN

Its dicult or anyone these days to navigate this currentstate o the cloud. Which technologies do you adopt? Howdeeply do you invest? Is the technology ready or you to jumpin all the way?

For MSPs and VARs, the question is even morecomplicated. Not only do you need to gure out whichcloud technologies will work best or your own business,

but you need to determine how cloud oerings t into yourproducts and services as well.

Te high-level summary o these various studies is thatbusinesses will be slow to embrace cloud computing andwhen they do, theyll still maintain some kind o on-sitebackup. At the same time, when they do adopt, it willlikely be rom local, trusted sources. Tis means that as

a solution provider, you need to be ready with the cloudstory youre going to tell.

At StorageCra, our orecast or the cloud is simply this:partly cloudy with a chance o rain. In other words, cloudcomputing isnt going to go away, but it is going to growslowly and is still raught with potential risks. As such, weve prepared a number o recommendations or partners

who are looking to push orward: Betheexpert(orndapartnerwhois).

Most I service providers guarantee a specic level o serviceto their customers. Whether its 99.9% uptime, no data loss,or guaranteed replication to another server, these servicelevel agreements (SLAs) are crucial to how the provideroperates.

In act, in many cases, the SLA becomes the dierentiatorbetween one organization and another.

When looking to partner with cloud providers, then, itsvital that you understand those SLAs and evaluate whichoers the best service or your needs. I you are going to beoering cloud services to your own clients through a thirdparty, then you need to know exactly what youre oering.

At the same time, its just as important that you take allSLAs with a grain o salt. Some guarantees are virtuallyimpossible to enorce. For example, what i your cloudprovider goes out o business? Imagine youve moved all oyour own data or the data o your clients into storage with

a cloud provider that les or bankruptcy. How can theypossibly meet their promised level o service then?

WhenAmazonsEC2cloudservicecrashedin2011,theallibility o SLAs became apparent. Te letter reprintedin the sidebar is one Amazon sent to a client ollowing thecrash (as reported on MSNBC).

Not only is the clients data completely lost, but i theydo not remove the corrupted le, they ll continue to paystorage charges. Imagine having to explain this data loss toyour own clients.

As important as it is to understand the SLAs o theproviders youre partnering with, its just as important torecognize that no SLA is completely bullet proo. Tis is

that chance o rain in our orecast and rankly, you need tobe the umbrella.

Consider each SLA and look or points o weakness, thenbolster your own oering to protect your own clients. As one Amazon customer told its own clients, Ourdevelopment team is also hard at work to limit the impacto any uture AWS interruptions.15 Dont wait until aer adisaster to implement procedures that control the way yourcloud provider aects your clients.

    PROVIDERS SLAs

    Where SLAs Break Down

    Hello,

A ew days ago we sent you anemail letting you know that wewere working on recoveringan inconsistent data snapshoto one or more o your Storagevolumes. We are very sorry, butultimately our eorts to manuallyrecover your volume wereunsuccessul. Te hardware ailedin such a way that we could notorensically restore the data.

What we were able to recover hasbeen made available via a snapshot, although the data is in such a statethat it may have little to no utility...

I you have no need or thissnapshot, please delete it to avoidincurring storage charges.

We apologize or this volume lossand any impact to your business.

    Sincerely,14

    BUILD SOLUTIONS THAT MEET CLIENT

    NEEDS AND BUDGET

It should be apparent by now that the cloud is not a one-size-ts-all solution.

As such, it is imperative that you understand yourcustomers business models, their needs, and their budgetsas you create solutions to move their data to the cloud.Within the context o those needs and budgets, you can thenwork to build a backup and disaster recovery plan that takes

advantage o the cloud, but still protects them rom the rain.o start out, we always recommend that you include alocal backup in your plan. Tat way, i your cloud providergoes out o business or has that major cascading ailurepredictedbyGartner, yourdataisprotected.Onceyouhave that local copy, you can create an o-site solution.

Te traditional o-site model is to simply replicate to adata center somewhere. Whether youre using a colocationcenter or simply storage at your ofce or home, the datacenter model allows you to recover easily rom a site-

specic disaster. Data centers are not technically a cloudsolution and it does not oer many o those benets, butthey are still a perectly respectable and reliable solution.

A second solution is to create a corporate cloud. Tis is ahybrid approach. Here, youve taken your corporate cloudand virtualized it so you can quickly provision machinesand work with elastic data sets. Tis allows or dynamicgrowth and the manipulation o images youve moved there. You can spin them up, restore them to a virtual or physicalmachine and so on. A corporate cloud even allows you totest disaster recovery plans. A corporate cloud can meet

requirements o many executives to back up to the cloudwithout relinquishing control o your customers data to athird party. With a corporate cloud, you still have completecontrol. Unortunately, with a corporate cloud, you take onall the cost and risk yoursel, which is no small thing.

Te third option, o course, is simply replicating to thecloud. Tere are many benets to this, but its important

to remember that once you replicate data to a third partycloud provider, youre no longer in control o it. You cantgo into their cloud environment and do ailovers or testrestores with your own data. Tere are a ew servicesthat allow this, but not many. As you make your cloudplan, then, you need to be sure that youre meeting yourcustomers needs. I all they need is to transer their data tothe cloud, then it may be the perect solution. I, however, they need to recover that data quickly, i their recoverytime objective is a day or less, then the cloud may notwork. Te time it takes to pull data back rom the cloud, whether over the Internet or by some other route, may be adeal breaker.

O course you could always mix these options, replicatingyour local backup to a data center, or instance, and thenreplicating it into the cloud. In any event, its imperative asyou create your cloud oering that you understand whatyour customer actually needs. Each o the options oersdierent benets and drawbacks and you wont do yourselany avors trying to orce a solution on a client that doesntmeet their needs. No one likes to be sold something theydont need.

    DONT RUSH

Most people think about the cloud like its an application. You buy it, you install it, and thats it. But thats not reallyhow it works.

Using the cloud is really a phased process. Once youunderstand the needs o your customers, you can providesolutions that allow them to take advantage o the cloud asthey truly need it.

Te research presented in this paper suggests that cloudadoption is going to happen slowly, as users graduallymove business-line applications to the cloud as needed.Tis allows them to get a sense o the benets the cloud isactually providing in a measured and controlled way.

As an MSP or VAR, you should do the same. You dontneed to throw everything into the cloud all at once (partlycloudy, remember?). You can take the time to learn howcloud computing really ts into your oering and how itcan meet the needs o your customers.

    GETTING OUT OF THE SMOG

Te truth is that or all the hype about its benets, the cloudis not yet living up to its promises or many people.

Tat doesnt mean it will never meet those expectations, but right now we should consider it or what it is: anemerging group o technologies that have promise but thatare still trying to gure out exactly how they work. Withthat perspective, we can be smart. We can take our time,

and we can develop cloud strategies that meet the needs oour clients and that make sense.
