Conclusions◦ There is no significant price difference between public cloud, private object, and

traditional backup storage.◦ In order to maintain price equivalence between all of the types of storage studied,

some kind of deduplication gateway device would need to be placed in front of both the public and private object storage, thus driving the cost up slightly.◦ We currently don’t have cost information on these devices.◦ Note, this increases the complexity and the operational costs of object storage.◦ This also holds true for backups to S3 within AWS. An AMI of a deduplicating gateway in front of S3 storage

would still be needed to maintain cost parity. ◦ The ability to provide a similar solution for Google is unclear at the moment.

◦ Glacier storage is significantly cheaper ($0.11)/GB, however those costs do not include retrieval fees. When typical retrieval fees are included, cost can still be ½ of S3 costs.◦ Typically, figure about $0.30/GB for data retrieval, however, this can go up significantly of you want the data in less than 24 hours.
