Artifice is a Woodlawn-based organization with a bold new approach to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and
math) education. We seek to use project-based, hands-on learning to endow participants with the tech and
entrepreneurial skills, specifically, that will make them the masters of their own destiny. Using the skills they learn at the center to create community-based social enterprises, students at Artifice will build their portfolios while benefiting the community. Ultimately, we hope to combine tech and
entrepreneurial competencies in a way that will sustainably raise the economic and educational prospects of the
neighborhood and surrounding areas.
Vision:
Modified hackerspace
Constructivist model: Curiosity & gamification propel kids along curriculum tracks
“Artifice” comes from the Latin for “made art,” reflecting, in part, our desire to transform the physical space.
Students increasingly gain agency over the space: spray painting tiles, placing room dividers, prioritizing equipment purchases
Pipe dream: “Want to use the 3D printer? Better hack the electronic lock to that room!”
Technological Goals:
Track student activity and achievement
Create an interactive space, including challenges
Present a game-like front (points, leaderboards, etc.)
Provide data visualization and reporting for instructors, administrators, and grant-makers
