With the holiday season approaching it is always a good idea to be mindful of ways that we can make better decisions for our health. Middle school and high school clubs will take the guess work out of food labels this month. As consumers we should be conscious of nutritional values, calories on the label and serving size. We need to limit fat, cholesterol and sodium, and get enough fiber, vitamins, calcium and iron.

How much physical activity do we need? Why is it so important to take care of our heart? 4th through 6th grade members will answer this ques-tion. Members will learn about the benefits of physical activity and learn how to take their heart rate.

The Key Club Award, Award of Excellence and Senior Honor Cord are prestigious state awards given to very few Louisiana 4-H members. Contact the 4-H Office for an award application. Appli-cations are due to the 4-H Office by January 5, 2015.

Key Club Award:4-H Key Club Award in Louisiana gives recogni-tion to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leader-ship ability in their club and in their parish.

Key Club Award Requirements:

Must be 16 years of age by January 1, 2015.

Must have 3 years of 4-H club work including award year.

Must have completed one year of active Junior Leadership work excluding award year.

Award of Excellence: The Louisiana 4-H Foundation Award of Excellence is an award designed to recognize the achievements of junior 4-H members for their project work, leadership and community service.

Award of Excellence Requirements:

Must be under 14 years of age by January 1, 2015.

Must have at least two years of 4-H club work, including award year.

Senior Honor Cords: The Honor Cord award recognizes 4-H mem-bers who are graduating seniors.

Senior Honor Cord Requirements:

Must be an enrolled 4-H member in good standing.

Must be a graduating senior.

Must have been enrolled in 4-H for 3 years of their high school career.

Must have participated in at least one state-level 4-H pro-gram in the past 3 years.

Award Opportunities for 4-H’ers

Food and Fitness Camp will be held March 21-22, 2015 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. This camp is designed for family teams of youth and caring adult(s) to develop knowledge and skill in the area of food and nutrition, food safety, food preparation and healthy living. The camp includes hands-on workshops and physical fitness activities/recreation designed for families.

Space is limited to 60 family teams. Adult family members attend-ing must complete 4-H Overnight Chaperone Certification and will be responsible for providing supervision.

The cost is $75 per family (one camper/one adult) $40 for addi-tional family member.

Applications may be picked up from the 4-H office and are due back no later than Friday, February 20, 2015. Spots are allotted on a first come-first serve basis, so don’t delay!

Parents that have not been Overnight Chaperone Trained must complete this training before Friday, February 20th, 2015. Contact the 4-H Office for more information.

4-H Club Clover is in Full Swing!

Food and Fitness Camp: 4th-6th grade

4-H Fashion Camp is scheduled for the weekend of January 24-25, 2015. The camp is filled with fun projects to learn basic sewing skills for 10 to 13 year olds. Applications for camp can be picked up at the 4-H Office and must be turned back in with the registration fee before December 5, 2014. The parish can only send 2 campers at this time. All others will be put on a waiting list. Any adult who wishes to attend must complete overnight chaperone training. Space is limited for Fashion Camp so register early.

The next Junior Leader meeting will be November 13th at 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Office. The club is open to 8th-12th grade 4-H members. Serving as a 4-H Junior Leader is an honor, an opportunity and a responsibility. By being a Junior Leader, you can: help younger 4-H members learn about 4-H, develop your ability to work with others, become a leader in your community and volunteer to help better the 4-H program and surrounding community. You will also make new friends and become eligible for 4-H trips, awards and scholar-ships. Through this club, you will develop your abilities to plan, or-ganize and facilitate events and activities, all while having fun and making lifelong friends. Club membership dues are $10, payable at the November 13th meeting.

The Food For Families Food Drive will take place on December 2, 2014. The Iberia Parish drop-off site will be the Sugar Cane

Festival Building on Parkview Drive from 5am-10:30pm. All 4-H Clubs are encouraged to participate and collect non-perishable food items. Report to the 4-H office how much your club donates!

8-12th Graders: Why Join 4-H Junior Leaders?

4-H Club Clover is a Leadership club for 6-7th grade 4-H’ers. The first meeting was held at the 4-H Office on October 16 and was a great success! This club is open to new members in 6-7th grade. Annual membership dues are $5. The next meeting is scheduled for December 15 at 4:45-5:45pm. Club

members will create a film that will be showcased at local events and will participate in fun team building activities

Fall Fun Day Results

4-H University is a state wide competition for 8-12th grade 4-H’ers held on LSU Cam-pus in Baton Rouge during the summer. Participants from all over the state com-pete in over 40 different events for all expense paid trips and scholarships. This event is a long-time tradition in Iberia 4-H. We want YOU to join us this year!

In order to be eligible to apply to participate in this event, you MUST participate in 2 parish-wide 4-H events during the 2014-2015 school year. You still have plenty of time to qualify, but don’t wait until the last minute! We take the most active 4-H’ers to 4-H University. We need to see YOU at parish-wide 4-H events in order to qualify for 4-H University.

8-12th Graders: Want to Come to 4-H University this Summer?

Topic: “Planting for Bees from Backyards and Up”

Requirements: Write on the designated subject only. All factual statements must be referenced with bibliographical-style end-notes. A brief biographical sketch of the essayist, including date of birth, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number, must accompany the essay. Length: 750 to 1000 words. The word count does not include the endnotes, the bibliography or references, nor the essayist's biographical sketch, which should be on a separate page. You do NOT have to wear your uniform, but NO holes in your jeans, NO bare midriff shirts or flip flops. NO dirty dancing! Bring extra money for concessions. PARENTS ARE WELCOME!! FOR SAFETY REASONS, ATTENDEES MUST BE PICKED UP BY PARENTS IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING AND NOT ON SIDE STREETS!!

Broiler Project Workshop 4-H Broiler projects have been ordered and will be arriving in early January 2015. Do you need insight and guidance on how-to properly care for, select and show your broilers?

We will host a Broiler Project Workshop for all interested 4-H’ers and their parents on Monday, December 29th, 2014 at the 4-H Office from 5:30-7:00p.m. All 4-H’ers showing Broilers for Spring Livestock shows are encouraged to participate., but the event is open to all 4-H’ers. Please call the 4-H office to RSVP for this work-shop.
