Green route | 2.5 km.This is a pleasant short walk or run that heads out from the harbour along the beach promenade, via quiet roads in residential areas and past the roaring weir at Sæby’s former watermill, before heading back to the harbour through the oldest part of the town. Make a stop at Sæby Church and admire the unique frescoes from the period when the church was part of a large Carmelite monastery.

THE TOWN BY THE SEA AND THE WINDING STREAMAlgade, which follows the winding path of the stream, is home to the town’s large merchant’s houses, whilst Strandgade was populated by fishermen for centuries. Notice the many historic buildings on the route:

2

• Sæby Museum, merchant’s house at Consul Ørum’s Gård, 17th – 18th centuries. (Søndergade no. 1).

• Merchant’s house at Clasens Gård, 1750. (Algade no. 3). Formerly Clasens Hotel, where authors and artists such as Herman Bang and Gustav Wied, spent their summers in the 1890s and held parties in the garden by the stream.

• Adda Ravnkilde’s house, 1840. (Algade no. 7). Author 1862-83.• Merchant’s house at Hans Grams Gård, 1624.

(Algade no. 12). Amber workshop and museum.• “For Retfærdigheden”, 1848. (Algade no. 14). Former town hall and court building. Now tourist office,

gallery and cultural centre.• The former town hall, 1801, on the square at Klostertorvet.• Juels Hospital. Poor foundation 1565. (Strandgade 2).

Blue route | 5 km.

HOW ABOUT A TRIP THROUGH THE RAT-HOLES?The stream of Sæby Å, the town’s lifeblood and blue “umbilical cord”, connects the forest to the sea. Since the Viking Age, the mouth of the stream has formed an important natural harbour in the northern part of Kattegat and has supplied water and power to the stamping mill, tannery, dye works and watermill.A “secret” place on the trip is the road bridge with its spherical open-ings and built-in echo – referred to by the local population as the “rat-holes”.There’s an almost magical transition from forest to town.

This route runs north, following the promenade running behind the beach, turns inland past the lush diversity of the gardens at Nelle-manns Have and the cool shadows of the iron-rich spring at Jern-kilden, down through the undulating forest of Sæbygård Skov to “Skovlyst” cultural centre. Just follow the meandering path of the stream through the forest back to the town, past the town’s old, nar-row gardens to the mouth of the stream at the coast. It’s a trip that the kids will love.

3

• Sæby beach promenade (2.4 km long).• The gardens at Nellemanns Have. Crab apple garden, forest

and rhododendron gardens, etc.• The spring at Sæby Jernkilde, designed by Ulrik Plesner,

1887, when the town enjoyed a period as a spa town offering treatments for anaemia.

• “Skovlyst”, forest pavilion, 1881. Now the scene of Sæby amateur theatre group.

• The watermill at Sæby Vandmølle, approx. 1800, with roots dating back to the 17th century.

In the plantation at Gybels Plantage you pass a small lake that is home to ducks and coots. The location also has fitness equipment, a shelter in which to eat your packed lunch and a fire ring. Black route | 21.1 km.You don’t need a black belt to complete the longest of the Clover Leaf Routes in Sæby. The route is, however, exactly the same length as a half marathon, so if you choose to run, you are already in good shape. After a bracing start running along the coastline, you continue along the route of the former railway line, onwards to the “mountain stage” through the gardens at Nellemanns Have, up Gedebjergvej with its enchanting view of Kattegat. This is followed by an attractive descent through the forest of Sæbygård Skov, past the manor house Herregården Sæbygård and Sæby Golf Club, along the main road to the plantation at Gybels Plantage, where you can take a break and stretch any aching muscles. From here, the route heads back to the harbour past the miniature town, Sæby’s attractive rescue station and the town’s landmark, The Lady of the Sea.

ATTRACTIONS EN ROUTE - FROM THE FRESH SALTY BREEZE OF THE SEA TO THE TRANQUILLITY OF THE FOREST.

Clover Leaf Routes in Denmark were established in a collaboration between the Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF), Danish Gym-nastics and Sports Associations (DGI), Danish Company Sports Federation (DFIF), the Danish Outdoor Council and 10 pilot munic-ipal authorities in 2011. The development of the routes is funded by Nordea-fonden and pools and lottery funds aimed at promoting out-door activities.

The Clover Leaf Routes make up a nationwide path concept that pro-vides good opportunities to walk, cycle or run a marked, measured route on which you can experience a wealth of natural attractions. A Clover Leaf Route consists of four routes that all have the same starting point at a centrally located Clover Leaf Route post. In Sæby this is located at the bridge crossing the stream at the harbour.

The Clover Leaf Routes can also be found using your mobile device via Endomondo.
