Plan for the 4-H Speech Contest Now January and February are the times to promote the 4-H Speech Contest. The contest will be held on February 28, 2013, at CSU-Pueblo. Several levels of speech participation are provided to 4-H members including impromptu, interpretative reading and regular speeches. If we get information after a newsletter is printed, we will post it on our website and on our Facebook site. Also, if you’d like to be added to our 4-H email list, please let Marnie know. You may email her at: [email protected] Please plan to check the website and Facebook sites regularly for the latest information.

Fair Board Meeting When: January 16, 6:30 p.m. Where: CSUE Meeting Room Please call Julie Crain if you’d like to be on the agenda.

The Selection of Trips and Awards Did you know that many of our special trips outside the county and state require youth to complete and turn in a County Report Form? And, did you know some of the most prestigious 4-H awards Pueblo County gives require youth to complete and turn in a County Report Form?

Report forms have been, and still are, the best way for 4-H

members to show what they do in 4-H, their school, their

church, and their community. Some of the items to keep track

of for your report form are:

Your project, what you have learned, how many

hours involved in completing your project and how

you have shown growth in your project over the

years.

Any community service you have done with 4-H or

with any other outside organization.

Any leadership roles you hold in 4-H and any type of

citizenship activities you are involved in

School and church activities

Awards in 4-H

The report form is an excellent record keeping tool. As youth

prepare for college scholarship and awards applications, they

are able to use all the information that’s been compiled in their

report form. It takes a little time to fill out each year, but it is well

worth the work. Start now – the junior (8-13) and senior (youth

14-over) report forms are on our website. If you have

questions, please call the Extension Office.

A Report Form workshop will be held July 24th at a location yet

to be determined.

Deadlines To be fair and just, and to ensure the smooth functioning of the 4-H program and the Extension Office, we will strictly enforce all deadlines. In addition, meeting deadlines is a valuable life skill that we expect all of our 4-Hers to learn, and one that we expect all of our volunteers and parents to model. We will give you as much notice as possible for all deadlines. We have also published a year-long calendar in this newsletter that includes some of the year’s biggest deadlines, so put those on your calendar now. We want everyone to be able to participate, but to be fair and build future opportunities, we must adhere to our deadlines. Thank you for your understanding!

A Message from the new 4-H Youth Development Agent:

I am so excited to be working here in Pueblo County! I have had the pleasure of meeting several of you over the past few weeks and I look forward to meeting more of you soon! For those of you that I have not yet met, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Devin Engle and I am the new 4-H Youth Development Agent here in Pueblo County. I grew up in a rural part of northern New York State where snow and dairy cows are plentiful! I joined 4-H when I was nine years old and I have been in love with the program ever since. I have degrees in Animal Science and Agriculture Education, and I completed multiple internships in New York, Florida and Colorado. I have worked as an Agricultural Education teacher for two years and as a 4-H Program Assistant for two years. My husband and I relocated to Colorado in the summer of 2009. For a year I lived and taught at the Woodlin School in Last Chance, Colorado, but then we moved to Colorado Springs. (It’s a good thing I love both urban and rural areas!) My husband is originally from Woodland Park, so we have lots of family nearby. My passions are spending time with family, friends and my pets – Maggie, an 8 year old cocker spaniel and Cynders, a 16 year old shorthair cat. I also love spending time outdoors, especially mountain biking and skiing! My other interests are food science, horticulture, natural resources and agriculture (both rural and urban.) I also really enjoy traveling, eating new foods, teaching and working with volunteers and youth! I am thrilled to now serve you as the Pueblo County 4-H Youth Development Agent! I think this county has tons of potential so I am really excited about working with you to make 4-H even bigger and better here in Pueblo County! I really want to get to know you so be sure to introduce yourself the next time you see me - even stop by the office and say hello if you can! Happy New Year! Devin

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Enrollment Policy and Information The following enrollment fee will be in effect for the 2012-2013 year:

A $35.00 fee will cover the enrollment for up to two projects One additional project can be added for $5.00* Enrollment fee for Cloverbuds will be $20.00

All enrollments and add/drops for the 2012-2013 4-H year must be done electronically using our new online enrollment system—4HOnline. This new system will help to make sure that we all have the most accurate records. In addition, members and their parents will sign their enrollment forms electronically helping to eliminate the enrollment paper shuffle! Please let us know if you need help or internet access. *4-H youth may enroll in no more than three projects during one year. Each 4-H member is expected to complete ALL of the projects in which they are enrolled; that means completing a record book for each of those projects and exhibiting their project (preferably at the Pueblo County Fair except under special circumstances). We understand that each 4-H member and their family has time constraints, and by taking a reasonable amount of projects that can be completed, the member will feel successful, enjoy their 4-H experience, and increase their knowledge. If a family feels their 4-H member has the time and resources to take and complete more than three projects, youth may write a brief request outlining their plan to take and complete additional projects. Requests should be sent to Devin.

NEW—All member enrollments and add/drops will be done electronically in 4HOnline this year! All enrollments and add/drops are due by 5:00pm on March 15, 2013.

4-H Carnival & Dance - Plan To Join Us! Saturday, March 2—Creative Arts Building at the Colorado State Fairgrounds

COME ONE COME ALL to the 4-H Carnival and Dance – a fun 4-H family day and event on March 2. It’s a great time to involve all our 4-H and community families! There will be games, activities, prizes, concessions by the 4-H Trip Group.

Carnival: 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Dance: 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Please register your club’s booth(s) and pay the entry fees by February 25. The cost is $9 per booth and checks should be made payable to Extension Program Fund. Please let us know what booth you are having and the prizes you plan to give away. Clubs who have had a particular booth in the past have first priority of that booth if fully registered by February 19 (including payment and information). If a club misses the February 25 deadline, it will still be able to have a booth and all proceeds from the tickets will be donated to 4-H. At the carnival, clubs are responsible for collection of their tickets. Each club should have a container to collect tickets. Containers will be turned in after the carnival and youth will count the tickets. Clubs make 75% of the proceeds from their booth and $5 of their entry fee. The remainder goes to 4-H. Booths may be set up in the Creative Arts Building on the Fairgrounds the day of the carnival beginning at 2:00 p.m. You will be provided one table per booth. Spaces are approximately 15 square feet. All booths must be set up and ready by 3:30 p.m. Clubs are responsible for taking down their booths and cleaning their space by 7:30 p.m. There has been a terrific turnout of clubs hosting booths and community youth attending the carnival the last few years. It is a great, inexpensive family event. Thank you in advance for your support and participation!

Tufts University Study on Positive Youth

Development

The results of the eight year longitudinal study of Positive Youth

Development was recently completed by Tufts University and is

now posted to the Colorado 4-H website:

http://www.colorado4h.org/research_impact/index.php

More than 7,000 adolescents from diverse backgrounds across 44 states (including Colorado) contributed to this ―first of its kind‖ impact study. This study compared the positive youth development potential of the 4-H program with other youth serving organizations such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls clubs, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters to arrive at its landmark results. Study findings show that compared to their non-4-H peers, young people in 4-H are:

Less likely to engage in risk behaviors, such as drinking,

smoking, and drug use,

Two times more likely to plan to go to college, More likely to be involved in STEM activities, and girls in 4-H

are twice as like to be involved in STEM, Three times more likely to delay sexual activity by Grade 12, Two times more likely to exercise and be physically active, Three times more likely to contribute in their communities.

DOG

Dog Shows For 2013 At this point, the only dog show date that has been confirmed with the fairgrounds is May 18th at the Colorado Building and the Fine Arts Building. We will keep you informed about the other Pueblo shows and their dates and locations.

Dog Project Changes For 2013

There are several MAJOR changes for the dog program for 2013. Some of them are:

All Sub Novice classes will now have a new name and new requirements. The classes will be:

Beginner Novice A: This class is a first year class for the handlers and their dogs. This class is open only to

handlers and their dogs in their first year of dog obedience training work.

Beginner Novice B: This class is open only to second year dog obedience training members and must be the same

youth and dog team that showed in 2012 in Sub-Novice A.

Beginner Novice C – 1st year: This class includes members with previous obedience training who are working with a

new dog OR a dog with previous experience in an organized training class working with a new 4-H member. All

exercises will be performed on leash.

Beginner Novice C – 2nd year: This class is open only to those in the second year of Beginner Novice (Sub Novice

C) training and must be the same youth and dog team that showed in 2012 in Sub Novice C – 1st year.

Beginner Novice Exercises and Scores. The exercises and maximum scores in the Beginner Novice classes:

1. Heel on Leash 40 points

2. Figure Eight 40 points

3. Sit for Exam 40 points

4. Sit Stay 40 points

5. Recall 40 points

Maximum Total Score 200 points

The State 4-H Dress Code will be followed for all classes including obedience and rally. The State Dress code is available on

the State 4-H Website – just search Dress Code.

In addition, dog show classes will also have specific rules for foot attire. ―Proper foot attire for dog showing are shoes with are

closed-toed. No flip-flops, sandals or other open-toed shows will be allowed in the show ring for any class.‖

Appropriate clothing must be worn in all dog show classes including Obedience and Rally.

The member will be given 5 minutes to change into an appropriate outfit if the judge or superintendents deems their clothing

inappropriate.

If the clothing has been deemed inappropriate by a judge or superintendent, the member can be denied the opportunity to

show their dog until the clothing has been changed.

Youth will be given a dog show number at the first Pueblo County Show – this number will be used all year for all shows in

Pueblo County and County Fair. Carol has purchased water-proof numbers for your use, so please don’t lose these numbers.

The Colorado State 4-H Dog Program has adopted changes to the division as were outlined by the American Kennel Club in

April, 2012. There is an updated Rally Regulation packet on the State 4-H website. Please refer to that for the new rules and

signs. These new sign and regulations will be in effect at the 2013 Pueblo County Shows and State Fair.

Pueblo County will no longer be using the Danish System for ribbon placing for dog shows. We will instead be awarding 1st

through 10th place with all other placing receiving participation ribbons. Carol will once again keep track of all scores for Pueblo

County shows and County Fair. Remember, if you attend outside shows, score sheets are due to Carol within one week of the

show. You can fax, scan, mail or deliver these sheets to the Extension Office.

Study Guide For Dog Tests Carol is working with our new 4-H Agent Devin Engle on a study guide for the 2013 tests. It will be sent to all main leaders when it becomes available. Test dates for 2013 are May 9th and June 3rd.

10

Levels Testing The levels program is a valuable tool for leaders and youth to determine (regardless of age) how you can evaluate a 4-H members’ experience as a horse person. Levels testing is an important part of the 4-H Horse Project. Youth should be encouraged to ―test up‖ if you as a leader or trainer feel they are ready. Contact Carol in the Extension Office for more information on levels tests.

HORSE

Horse Council Meeting The next 4-H Horse Council Meeting will be held Tuesday, January 8 at the 6:30 at the 4-H Auditorium at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. Many important changes will be discussed at this meeting – please plan to attend and give us your input – this is YOUR horse program!!!

New Horse Leaders The horse program in Pueblo is growing and the number of leaders is diminishing. If you know of someone that would be willing to start a new horse club or assist with an established club, please have them get in touch with Carol in the Extension Office. They would need to fill out an application, go through a background check, provide three references and attend a new leader orientation meeting. Let’s keep our successful horse program going in 2013!

4-H Horse Safety Clinic Date Set There will only be ONE safety clinic for the 2012-2013 year — Saturday, March 16. The practice show will also be held the same day. The Horse Safety Training Guidelines for 2012-2013 will be as follows:

If you are a new member to 4-H, you MUST be evaluated

for the 2012/2013 4-H year.

If you are a transfer from another county and/or are a

beginner you MUST be evaluated for the 2012/2013 4-H year.

Remember - you DO need to bring your horse, your equipment and helmets must be worn.

Time For Horse Tests As we get closer to testing dates for Spring, Summer and County Fair Horse Shows, please be advised that these dates will be April 23 for the Spring Show in the Creative Arts Building, June 11 for Summer Show and June 24 for Pueblo County Fair in the 4-H Auditorium and Dining Hall.

State 4-H Horse Level Rater’s Training Carol is working with Fremont County in planning a date to host a level rater’s training in the Spring either in Pueblo or Canon City. Dates and more specific information will be announced in future newsletters.

Colorado 4-H Animal Care and Housing Form Due With Enrollments—March 15, 2013

This year it is easier than ever to submit your Animal Care and Housing Form! If ALL of your animals are housed on your property, then you just simply need to electronically sign the first page of the form when you enroll in 4-H using the 4HOnline website. If your animals are housed at a different location, you must submit BOTH the front and the back page of the Animal Care and Housing Form for approval. Since the back page is NOT on 4HOnline, you will need to submit a hardcopy. The back page will ask you where you house your animals. 4-H members are required to care for their own animals, whether they are housed at their home or at another location. This form simply verifies where they are kept and who the primary care giver is for the animals. Each youth enrolled in livestock/animal project must complete the form (electronically in 4HOnline if the animals are housed at the member’s home, hard copy if they are housed elsewhere) and return it to our office by the final enrollment deadline of March 15. The form will be available on our county 4-H website and is in this 4-H newsletter. Please note—Premise ID numbers are also required and will be collected on fair entry forms.

Craig Thalhamer Memorial Goat Chain – Applications due March 1

Pueblo County 4-H families started a Dairy Goat Chain in memory of friend and 4-H member Craig Thalhamer. The last recipient was Johanna Klein. Applications are due no later than March 1 and are available in the Extension Office. One member will be selected each year to receive a registered doeling. Requirements are as follows:

Members must be enrolled in 4-H for the year in which the application

is made.

Members must enroll in the dairy goat project for the coming year.

Housing, feed, and care of the dairy goat must be provided by the 4-H

member.

Your 4-H leader must recommend you for this award and sign that

they know you are capable of caring for the animal.

The dairy goat project must be complete for at least the next two

years, and the doe must be shown at the Pueblo County Fair.

Breeding of the doe will be provided by members of the CTM Dairy

Goat Chain.

The first doe kid from the scholarship doe will be returned to the CTM

Dairy Goat chain for another 4-H member.

Members may elect to pay an agreed price if they wish to keep their

first doe kid.

No bucks may be sold from your scholarship doe. (This may be

waved.)

Upon completion of the above requirements your contract will be

considered complete and you will then be the official owner of the original doe.

In case of the death of your scholarship doe, the above requirements

will be dropped. (CTM Committee must be notified through CSU extension office.)
