Summer China Travel amp Teaching Program 7040 Avenida Encinas Suite 104 ndash 219 Carlsbad CA 92011

As CLTArsquos 2018 recipient of the Spanish Embassy Grant for Travel I immersed myself in the city and culture of

Salamanca for one week this summer My time there impressed upon me the value of boldly engaging in learning

experiences with an open mind At the beginning of this school year I will ask my students to consider what it could look

like for them to be ten percent braver in our Spanish class and to take on the collective challenge of learning a new

language as a community I understand that my integrity as a teacher and impact on student success is multiplied when I

can demonstrate to students that I am both a guide and partner in learning when they write I write when they converse I

converse when they take risks I take risks and celebrate their bravery Without a doubt my saucy semana in Salamanca

has helped prepare me to show studentsmdashnot just tellmdashthat I am committed to learning with them

My week in Salamanca fortunately coincided with the international conference for educators called ldquoiexclEspantildeol para

Todosrdquo At their closing ceremony I found myself conflicted between the choice to awkwardly avoid the karaoke staged in

the middle of an amphitheater full of Spanish teachers anxiously awaiting the first signs of fiesta orhellip be ten percent

braver and boldly sing the nightrsquos first song ldquoDes-pa-citordquo Since I often encourage my students to engage with music and

authentic sources of language I felt especially compelled to let the insanely irresistible melody bring me to my feet and

step outside of my comfort zone Afterwards I was approached and congratulated by another attendee a fellow high

school Spanish teacher originally from Spain and currently teaching in Norway By taking a risk in front of a crowd of

Spanish teachers I formed a new friendship Together we decided to organize a pen-pal correspondence for our students

to video message one another using the educational technology tool called FlipGrid We hope that our studentsrsquo common

pursuit of cultural connection through the Spanish language enriches their lives as global citizens

I learned this summer that an essential element of Project-Based Language Learning is to create a public product that is

shared beyond the classroom with a broader community Therefore I took advantage of my trip in Spain to film a short

video of my own tapas tour and uploaded it onto Youtubecom In the video ldquoiexclQueacute ricordquo I enthusiastically meet new

people speak in Spanish with friendly locals explore the city and try a variety of foods With each tapa I savored the

multicultural influences of the countryrsquos cuisine traditional Spanish dishes like tortilla de patatas and gazpacho a

mini-hamburguesa showing the culinary influences of globalization and a falafel with hummus from a Syrian and Arabic-

speaking restaurant owner Now when I ask students to publish their work I model my personal commitment to

connecting with global audiences and illustrate how meaningful learning can happen outside the classroom

Studying abroad in Salamanca allowed me to disconnect to reconnect mdash I seized the opportunity to step back from

teaching and step into my studentsrsquo shoes to better empathize with their perspective as learners I learned about Spanish

art history architecture philosophy language pragmatics and instructional strategies With so many new ideas to take

in I needed more chances to absorb what I was hearing and seeing with hands-on experience Luckily our teacher asked

us to write and perform raps summarizing an article we read about Cervantes novel ldquoDon Quijoterdquo I actively engaged with

the content to synthesize my understanding of the readingrsquos main ideas with keywords a rhyming scheme and rhythm of

4 beats per line I was able to better connect with the content when encouraged to express myself through a medium that

particularly interested me Similarly I want my students to explore creative outlets for grappling with material I encourage

them to take ownership of their learning by making personalized choices about how they express themselves For

example students might choose to create a rap poem instructional video theatrical performance storybook graphic-

novel puppet show song or speech A key component to our class is connecting the academic skills we learn with

personal passions and then creating unique performances or products to share and inspire growth To demonstrate here

is the rap I wrote in Salamanca

Habiacutea una vez un hidalgo

un hidalgo de la Mancha alto y flaco

Flaco bellaco elegiaco y maniaco

iexclLos molinos de viento le daban mucho asco

Con Sancho su caballo casco y lanza
