DENVER -- The Chicago Cubs will sport a new look in the miiddle of their lineup Saturday night at Colorado in an effort to

cure their lack of clutch hitting.

Miguel Montero will bat in the cleanup spot, with Starlin Castro moving to fifth. The Cubs are only 2-for-25 with runners in

scoring position in their first three games, with Castro collecting both hits from the cleanup spot.

Jason Hammel seeks sharpness

Staff Writer

DENVER -- Jason Hammel is used to the routine of pitching every five days, but recent developments will put his comfort

to the test Saturday night when the Chicago Cubs play Colorado.

Hammel, who will make his 2015 debut, hasn't pitched since April 1 in an exhibition game against the Milwaukee Brewers

at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz. Hammel was scheduled to make his first start Wednesday against the Cardinals, but the

Cubs' rainout on Tuesday caused the Cubs to adjust their rotation.

Jake Arrieta's start was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday, with Hammel moved back to Saturday night.

“We’re such habitual creatures that it depends on your routine," Hammel said. "So when your routine is messed up, what

I try to do is not do too much. If you get a day (off) sometimes, take a day. And then I’ve thrown an extra time in the

bullpen and off flat ground just to stay sharp with pitches. Other than that, I just make sure my body feels great or as close

to normal as possible."

Hammel threw in the bullpen on Sunday and again on Wednesday, in which he tried to simulate a start by throwing close

to 100 pitches.

"Other than that, I don't try to do too much. You make sure you don’t get too rusty or dusty. I’m chomping. I want to get

going."

Chicago Cubs top prospect Kris Bryant was held hitless in four at-bats Friday night as Triple-A Iowa lost at Memphis 8-1.

Bryant, 23, who batted .425 with nine home runs in 40 at-bats in spring training, struck out twice.

Coors Field reminder for Dexter Fowler

DENVER -- Dexter Fowler received a warm welcome by the Coors Field fans after spending five seasons with the

Colorado Rockies.

But Fowler was quickly reminded about the thin Denver air while snapping out of a slow start after hitting two triples in his

first two at-bats.

“I forgot about running here during my first triple," said Fowler, who confessed to former teammate and Rockies third

baseman Nolan Arenado that he was tired.

But Fowler kick-started the Cubs' once-sluggish offense, which had scored three runs in its first three game before rolling

to a 9-5 win.

"We just got to be more patient," said Fowler, who also drew two walks. "I think everybody is amped up with the opening

week, opening whatever. Everyone is trying to get that big hit, trying to put too much pressure on themselves. We were

relaxed tonight and kept it going."

And Fowler helped eased the minds of fans who were panicking over their 2-for-27 performance with runners in scoring

position before he hit his second triple that scored two runs in the second.

“People are going to talk," Fowler said. "People are going to say what they need to say. At the end of the day, you play

162 games and some stuff is going to fall. We hit the ball hard, some right at people. We can’t put too much pressure on

ourselves."

Fowler seemed immune to outside talk that the Cubs should promote their top prospects to the majors immediately.

“That’s for them to keep talking about it," Fowler said. "That social media, let it happen."

Jason Hammel likes bond with Miguel Montero

Cubs' Jason Hammel on pitching in Coors Field

Mark Gonzales

DENVER -- Catcher Miguel Montero didn't have to yell Saturday night at Jason Hammel after using the same tactic to

Jake Arrieta.

But Montero managed to get his point across to an appreciative Hammel, who trusted his catcher to make some key

pitches during the Chicago Cubs' 9-5 win over Colorado.

"Miggie was very emphatic with the pitches," Hammel said. "I wanted to shake (off a signal) and go somewhere else, and

he said, 'no, this is what you want to do.' And both of them ended up being (strikeouts). He and I are starting to get on the

same page. He’s realizing what I want to throw. I’m going with what he wants to do, too. We’re working very well

together."

Hammel fooled Troy Tulowitzki on an 82 mph slider for a called third strike to end the first, and then he struck out Hundley

on a fastball for a called third strike to end the sixth.

"He gets that little extra out of you," Hammel said. "His glove work and getting strikes out of balls is well documented. I

like him a lot."

Mike Olt survives scare

Mark Gonzales

DENVER -- If social media buzz about when the Chicago Cubs will promote Kris Bryant from Triple-A Iowa wasn't

enough, Mike Olt nearly had another setback after showing why he was once regarded as one of the majors' top

prospects.

Olt was struck on the right wrist on a pitch from Adam Ottavino in the ninth inning and had to leave the game. The injury

occurred six innings after Olt hit his first home run of the season on the same night that Bryant went 3-for-4 with a home

run in a 13-0 win over Memphis.

Fortunately for Olt and the Cubs, x-rays were negative and Olt believes he can play Sunday if needed.

“It caught me just below my wrist," Olt said with his wrist wrapped in ice. "It hurt, but it’s fine now. They didn’t see anything

in the x-ray, so it’s a good thing."

Olt admitted he was initially scared.

“I couldn’t feel anything," Olt said. "I think it was from the shock of getting hit. Once I was walking away, I was moving it

around so I wasn’t as nervous.”

Page 23: Club: Chicago Cubs Level of Play: MAJ Position Type: BB ...mlb.mlb.com/.../6/117780436/Reds_vs_Cubs_6s9be30y.pdf · 30 Motte, Jason L RHR R/R 06/22/1982 Active 6.035 54 Ramirez, Neil

Olt's rise to the majors was delayed in November of 2012 when he was beaned while playing winter ball in the Dominican

Republic. The injury affected his vision and stunted his development with the Texas Rangers, who traded him to the Cubs

in the Matt Garza trade in the middle of the 2013 season.

Olt's homer was an opposite-field shot that landed in the Rockies' bulpen.

The Cubs currently are carrying Arismendy Alcantara, Tommy La Stella and Jonathan Herrera on their roster, and all

three can play third base. That didn't stop the messages on Twitter for Bryant to be promoted despite the fact that the

Cubs want Bryant to work on his defense in the minors as well as that they can delay his free agency until after the 2021

season if he's not promoted to the majors by Friday.

“As I said before, (Bryant) deserves all the hype he can get," Olt said. "He’s one of the best in the minor leagues and he’s

one of the best I’ve seen. The fact he’s getting (attention), it’s a good thing.”

As for Twitter, “I don’t really check Twitter any more” Olt said.

Cubs get jolt from Dexter Fowler, Starlin Castro in 9-5 win vs. Rockies

Cubs manager Joe Maddon on his rotation

Mark Gonzales

DENVER — Aside from a tweak in the middle of the order, Cubs manager Joe Maddon wasn't about to revamp the lineup

Saturday night despite their lack of clutch hitting.

And after scoring only three runs in the first three games, the offense rewarded Maddon with production at the top and

bottom of the order.

That alleviated any worries about the offense and gave Jason Hammel a welcome cushion as the Cubs pulled away to a

9-5 victory over the Rockies.

But there was a scare in the top of the ninth inning when Mike Olt was hit near the right wrist by a pitch from reliever

Adam Ottavino and had to leave the game.

X-rays were negative, and Olt was listed as day to day.

Arismendy Alcantara, Tommy La Stella and Jonathan Herrera are on the Cubs' roster and can play third base.

Meanwhile, leadoff batter Dexter Fowler followed his 1-for-13 start with two triples. The Cubs had gone 28 innings without

hitting a home run after slugging 48 in spring training, but the power returned as Chris Coghlan and Olt hit consecutive

home runs in the third inning and Starlin Castro launched a solo shot in the fifth.

Even Hammel helped his cause by hitting singles in each of his first two at-bats. Hammel's single in the second was the

first by a Cubs starting pitcher batting in the eighth spot this season.

Fowler followed with a triple that snapped the Cubs' 2-for-27 rut with runners in scoring position.

The offense got started early after Maddon inserted left-handed hitter Miguel Montero in the cleanup spot and dropped

Castro to fifth in an effort to help No. 3 hitter Anthony Rizzo.

"Nobody wants to pitch to Riz, so I thought maybe by getting a right-handed hitter (Castro) out from behind him with a

right-hander pitching, he might have a better chance of seeing a pitch he can hit hard," Maddon said before the game.

Rizzo has accepted the consequences of moving closer to the plate as he was drilled by a pitch from Kyle Kendrick in the

first but was left stranded.

Rizzo stranded runners in scoring position in his next two at-bats, but his teammates picked up the slack.

In addition to his homer, Castro's infield hit capped a three-run rally and steers some of the attention away from his

defense.

An error charged to him in the eighth inning Wednesday against the Cardinals was changed to a hit, but Castro took full

responsibility for a fielding lapse that prevented an inning-ending double play in the eighth inning of Friday's loss to the

Rockies.

"It's my fault," Castro said. "That's a really easy ground ball. And I really recognized it before it happened. The pitch was a

fastball away, it's going to be my grounder on the glove side, and I tried to time the ball instead of catching the ball and

flipping it."

Cubs' Edwin Jackson ready for anything

Edwin Jackson on his new role as a Cubs relief pitcher

Mark Gonzales

Page 24: Club: Chicago Cubs Level of Play: MAJ Position Type: BB ...mlb.mlb.com/.../6/117780436/Reds_vs_Cubs_6s9be30y.pdf · 30 Motte, Jason L RHR R/R 06/22/1982 Active 6.035 54 Ramirez, Neil

DENVER -- After pitching two scoreless innings Friday in only his third relief appearance since 2009, Edwin Jackson gave

himself a title.

"A bullpen starter," Jackson said.

After two disastrous seasons and losing his spot in the rotation to left-hander Travis Wood, Jackson's scoreless relief

outing was a baby step toward him regaining a semblance of his old form that could result in a bigger role later this

season.

"If he can handle it like that and keep performing well, you know he's going to get an opportunity," manager Joe Maddon

said. "It's going to pop at some point, either a long moment in the bullpen that helps us win a game, or he's going to get a

start and do the same thing."

The Cubs owe Jackson $22 million over the final two years of his contract, so they're trying to salvage something out of a

strong but inconsistent right arm.

Jackson said he isn't consumed with trying to regain his starting job, and Maddon likes that he has accepted whatever role

he has been given.

"I warm up very quickly, even when I'm starting," Jackson said. "The warming up part isn't an issue. It's a different routine.

It's manageable.''

Jackson said he can learn from his current role as a reliever in the event he returns as a starter in the future.

"There are things you can take away from each situation you're in," Jackson said. "And right now be ready for whatever

situation I'm called upon."

Rotation roundup: With three days off in the first week because of scheduled days off and a rainout, Maddon kept his

rotation intact instead of having his veterans start as much as possible while skipping the turns of the remaining starters.

"It's wise to keep guys strong and healthy for the end of the season," Maddon said.

Injury update: Outfielder Chris Denorfia had his left hamstring examined by the Cubs' trainers at Coors Field and is

scheduled to start a minor-league rehabilitation assignment Sunday at Class A Myrtle Beach. … Catcher Taylor

Teagarden was placed on the seven-day disabled list at Triple-A Iowa because of a sore right shoulder. … Relievers

Daniel Bard and Anthony Carter also started the season on the DL at Iowa.

Saturday's recap: Cubs 9, Rockies 5

Mark Gonzales

Cubs turn on the power with first three home runs of the season in 9-5 victory over Rockies.

The summary

The Cubs tweaked their lineup Saturday night at Coors Field in an effort to create more opportunities for Anthony Rizzo by

batting Miguel Montero in the cleanup spot and dropping Starlin Castro to fifth. The offense responded with 12 hits in the

9-5 victory that included the Cubs' first three homers of the season from Chris Coghlan, Mike Olt and Starlin Castro.

At the plate

Dexter Fowler gave the offense a much-needed spark when he tripled on the game's first pitch and scored on a sacrifice

fly. The Cubs' three-run rally in the sixth, capped by Castro's RBI infield single, loomed large after the Rockies rallied in

the eighth and ninth.

On the mound

Jason Hammel, pitching for the first time since April 1, allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. He induced double

plays to get out of trouble in the fourth and fifth.

In the field

Right fielder Jorge Soler battled the sun to catch a Charlie Blackmon line drive before falling to his knees in the first.

Cubs' Mike Olt feels 'lucky nothing worse happened'

04/12/2015, 12:26am

Gordon Wittenmyer

DENVER – Cubs third baseman Mike Olt appeared to avoid serious injury when he was hit on the right wrist by a pitch

from hard-throwing Adam Ottavino in the ninth inning of the Cubs’ 9-5 win at Colorado.

Olt left the game. Initial X-ray results appeared to be negative, manager Joe Maddon said.

“We’re going to approach it as though he’s going to be sore [Sunday],” Maddon said. “I don’t know if he can play [Sunday],

but it does not appear, initially, to be a break.”

Olt said he was “relieved.”

“It was a scary spot to hit because there’s not much meat around it,” he said. “I’ll be ready to go. We’ll just play it by hear.

Just got to wake up in the morning, and if it’s good to go, I’ll be there.”

Olt hit his first homer of the season in the third to right field and just missed another in the seventh when he got under a

pitch he drove deep to left.

Two innings later, his early season flashed before his eyes.

“I wasn’t in a good state,” he said of his initial reaction as he went to his knees after getting hit. “I couldn’t feel anything. I

think it was just from the shock of getting hit. Once I was walking away, I was moving it around, so I wasn’t as nervous.

“I got lucky nothing worse happened.”

Cubs' bats get loud in Colorado, quiet noise from Iowa

04/12/2015, 12:04am

Gordon Wittenmyer

DENVER – On the Cubs’ seventh day without Kris Bryant … Wait a minute, who?

The Cubs finally hit like they didn’t need a boost from their slugger-in-waiting at Class AAA Iowa – pounding the Colorado

Rockies’ Opening Day starter Saturday night in a 9-5 victory at Coors Field.

If anything, the Cubs raised the suggestion that clearing out a position for Bryant to play might not be as automatic as

many have assumed – although Twitter lit up about Bryant when third baseman Mike Olt left the game after getting hit on

the wrist by a pitch in the ninth.

“I don’t really check Twitter anymore,” said Olt, smiling, after initial x-rays appeared to show nothing worse than a bruise.

“We’ve got to play it by ear, but if it’s good to go, I’ll be ready [Sunday].”

What about left field for Bryant? Chris Coghlan delivered the first home run of the season for the Cubs, driving a 1-0 pitch

from Kyle Kendrick over the center field wall in the third.

Third base? Olt followed Coghlan with an opposite-field shot to right.

Two innings later, Starlin Castro added a solo shot. And by the time the Cubs knocked out Kendrick in the sixth, nobody

was talking about problems hitting with men in scoring position or about prospects on the farm.

“It’s about the guys that are here,” manager Joe Maddon said, repeating his mantra during an underproductive opening

stretch.

The Cubs had all of three runs to show for their first three games before breaking out with 12 hits – five for extra bases –

along with five walks, the Olt scare and the obligatory pitch off Anthony Rizzo’s body (that’s four HBPs in three games for

Rizzo).

“I think everybody’s a little amped up, opening week, opening whatever,” said leadoff man Dexter Fowler, who tripled

twice and walked twice. “Everybody’s trying to get that big hit, putting too much pressure on ourselves. I think we were

relaxed tonight. Now we can just keep it going.”

Jorge Soler, Castro and pitcher Jason Hammel all had multi-hit games, too.

Hammel (1-0), by the way, turned in an especially quality start for six innings (allowing three runs), considering the hitter-

friendly conditions on the warm night at Coors.

“It’s one of those games where you’ve just got to ride it out,” said Hammel, who gave up a two-run homer to Nolan

Arenado in the second but little else (including no walks).

And just like that, a strange, uneven start to the season seemed to be behind the Cubs. And maybe even the talk and

clamor for Bryant, too.

“That’s for [others] to keep talking about. That’s social media,” Fowler said. “Let it happen. Let it happen.”

Olt seems to be taking it in stride, despite the job implications and the Twitter boycott.

Page 26: Club: Chicago Cubs Level of Play: MAJ Position Type: BB ...mlb.mlb.com/.../6/117780436/Reds_vs_Cubs_6s9be30y.pdf · 30 Motte, Jason L RHR R/R 06/22/1982 Active 6.035 54 Ramirez, Neil

“He deserves all the hype he gets,” Olt said of Bryant. “He’s one of the best in the minor leagues and one of the best I’ve

seen. The fact he’s getting it is a good thing.”

Not that it’s going to affect Olt, Coghlan or anyone else if games like this become more common than the others – even

with Bryant having games like his 3-for-4 Saturday for Iowa that included his first homer.

“We played well. We pitched well,” Maddon said. “This is a ballpark you’re going to give up five points. And [the Rockies]

have been rather toasty.”

But even in handing the Rox their first loss in five games, the Cubs still left eight men on and didn’t exactly light it up with

men in scoring position (3-for-13).

“You’re always going to leave somebody on base when you have that many opportunities,” Maddon said. “But I’d like to

see us get just a little bit more efficient in different moments.

“But overall I’ve got nothing to complain about.”

Can Edwin Jackson become weapon for Cubs in new role?

DENVER – Edwin Jackson isn’t spending a lot of time analyzing his new role in the Cubs bullpen.

“Just trying to go out and put up zeroes,” he said, “however I get it done.”

It worked in his season debut Friday, when he pitched two scoreless innings against the Colorado Rockies.

And if he’s able to keep up that more aggressive reliever’s mindset, he has the stuff and velocity to become a weapon in

the bullpen that was unable to be in two years as a starter for the Cubs.

Manager Joe Maddon said that’s the vision he has for the right-hander who hasn’t made more than one relief appearance

in a season since 2006.

“That tells you how well he’s processed the whole moment,” Maddon said of Jackson’s performance Friday, which

included retiring the first four he faced – including a strikeout of All-Star Carlos Gonzalez. “That speaks and bodes well for

him and for us.

“If he can handle it like that and keep performing well, you know it’s going to pop up – either a long moment out of the

bullpen that help us win a game, or he’s going to get a start and the same thing.”

Jackson, who’s in the third year of a four-year, $52 million deal, lost his rotation job late last season and failed to win it

back in a spring competition with Travis Wood. But he has taken an almost Zen-like approach to the changing role,

insisting he won’t worry about things he can’t control.

“I just try to go out and whatever the job is that I have to get done, get it done for an inning or however many innings I’m

going to pitch,” said Jackson, who added the adjustment hasn’t been difficult so far.

“I just have to be ready for whatever situation arises, just try to stay in the game. Pretty much all you can do is be ready

when the phone rings and your name is called, regardless of the situation.”

There’s positives to take from everything. Thigns you can take away from each situation that you’re in and still incorporate

it into the day if you go back to starter, things that you can incorporate form the bullpen into starting. Right now just be

ready for whatever situation that I’m called upon.

Both he and Maddon say a successful run in the pen could make him a better starter, too, if he gets the chance to return

to that role, in particular helping solve a career tendency to struggle early in games before settling in.

“There’s things you can take away from each situation that you’re in and incorporate it into [another],” he said. “There’s

things you can incorporate from the bullpen into starting. Right now, it’s just be ready for whatever situation that I’m called

upon.”

NOTES

–Outfielder Chris Denorfia (hamstring) worked out with the club Saturday and travels Sunday to join advanced-A Myrtle

Beach to start a rehab assignment.

–Maddon moved Starlin Castro down a spot in the order and put lefty hitting Miguel Montero behind Anthony Rizzo

Saturday because “the thing I’ve been seeing is nobody wants to pitch to Rizz, so I thought just by getting a righty out

from behind him with the right-hander (Kyle Kendrick) pitching he might have a better chance of seeing a pitch he can hit

hard somewhere.” Also, Montero was 6-for-13 vs. Kendrick entering the game.

–When Rizzo was hit by a pitch in the first inning Saturday it marked the fourth HBP in six plate appearances, going back

to Wednesday.
