Sgt. Rob Derry from Troop ‘G’ in Bridgeport attended the February meeting to thank
George and the club for our support of their 2019 Toys-for-Tots campaign. The word is that the troopers have as much fun escorting our caravan down I-95 as we do
during our annual Korvettes for Kids toy drive.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone, hope you all gave your sweetie a big
hug and kiss!
Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs for their Super Bowl Win, 2020, it
was a long time coming. I have to admit that I don’t watch a lot of football
during the season, but I always watch the Super Bowl, probably because of
the guilt free obligation I feel to load up on chips, wings and beer.
With the daylight hours increasing each day we are getting closer and closer
to unwrapping and unplugging our Corvettes and getting ready for another
fun filled summer of enjoyable driving. The much awaited delivery of the C8 is due this month,
delayed due to the 6 week UAW strike. As a club we have much planned for this season, our
annual picnic at Hammonasset tentatively for June 7th, The Newport Car Museum on June 13th,
our 28th annual car show on July 12, and Corvettes at Carlisle beginning August 27th just to
mention a few. If you are interested in hosting an event or cruise, just let any of us know and
we will help get it on the schedule. Speaking of our events schedule, many thanks to Bob
Wadyka in keeping our calendar full and giving us all a preview of all future events.
Our 28th annual Car Show will be on July 12th with a rain date of July 19th. Ed Karedes has been
hard at work planning the event so that it is an enjoyable day for everyone showing or viewing
the cars. There are many different components to putting on a show of this magnitude and
having chair people to handle the various tasks is critical. Dennis Krajewski will be taking on the
task of recruiting and training new car show judges for 2020. As our car show grows, so does
our need to have all of the cars judged in a timely fashion and the awards presented. If you
have never judged a car before, don’t be intimidated, 99% of judging involves cleanliness of the
car. Our ad book is a great source of revenue for our show, Gina Forlano will be taking over
much of the ad book responsibilities this year with the capable assistance of George Macary.
George has done a fantastic job with the ad book for over 10 years now, and Gina has
volunteered to take over some of these responsibilities this year. Gina is no stranger to car
clubs, she is past president of the Alpha Romeo Club, which also has a membership similar to
Club Corvette of Connecticut.
Lastly, a huge thank you to all of our sponsors for their continuing support of our Club.
McDermott Chevrolet has generously agreed to sponsor us again for 2020, we are thankful to
have them as our sponsor and also to Joe Cetta for all that he does personally for all of us.
Thank you, Joe!

The Pit Stop
It is mid-February with no snow on the ground, but our Vettes are still tucked away in the garage along with the snow blower. Yet in the world of auto racing Pit Road is open
and the cars are out on the track clearing out their exhaust pipes. Yes, the 2020 auto racing season has started which also means just over the horizon is the time when we
can fire up our Vettes and clear out the pipes. We are starting this “PIT STOP” series of articles with the intention of creating some member interest in auto racing and
specifically the new C8.R GM race team.
Members are encouraged to submit articles that may be included in future newsletters. The topic can be about any one of the many racing series (NASCAR, INDY, FORMULA 1),
whichever you enjoy. We have some members who currently race Corvettes and they will be sharing their “on track” activities. In this column, members will be able to share
any auto related info, technical or otherwise.
To get us started, I thought that I would recap the recent IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) Rolex 24 hours race at Daytona. For those who may not know IMSA
has four specific car categories. The DPI (Daytona Protype) class these are cars specific built for racing and they do not need to resemble any production car except for the
engines that are provided by different manufacturers such as Cadillac, Acura, Mazda or Nissan. These race cars are the most powerful and fastest cars in IMSA. The next group
of cars is the LMP2 group which again are purposely built for racing but with slightly less
power making them slightly slower on the race track. The third category is the GTLM (Grand Turing LeMans). This group is production base meaning that they look like the
production car. Cars in this group include the Corvette C8.R and manufacturers like BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and several others. The fourth group is the GTD, Grand Touring
Daytona. This is the lowest power and slowest group. It includes Acura, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes and Porsche. During a race all four car
groups are on the track racing at the same time for position within their group.
Corvette has found a home racing in IMSA and 2020 “Rolex 24” is the maiden outing for the new C8. Prior to the race the #3 and #4 Corvette qualified in the 3rd and 4th
positions respectively. Both cars started out strong. About 10 hours into the race the #4 car developed an oil leak and had to pit. Unfortunately the engine had to be pulled
out of the car so that it could be repaired. The #4 did get back on the track but by the time it did it was down about 80 laps. The #3 car ran strong for all 24 hours alternating
between the top 3 positions with the BMW and the two Porsche entries. At the end of the race #3 finished in 4th position with the BMW taking 1st followed by the two Porsches.
For the first time out in competition I think the C8.R made Corvette owners proud. The #3 car completed 785 laps (2,795 miles) which I believe is a record for Corvettes in this
24 hour endurance race.
The next IMSA race will be March 19-21 at the Mobil 12 hours of Sebring, Fla international raceway. Mark your calendar if you want to see and hear the C8.R up close
and personal. IMSA will be running on July 17-18 at Lime Rock in Connecticut.
I apologize that this article is a little longer than I expect future articles will be but I wanted to set the stage for what I hope will be articles of interest to members and I
wanted to give an overview of where “our C8.R” will be competing during 2020. The
next 24 hour endurance race will be in June, on the world stage, during the 24 hours of LeMans in France. That is a biggie folks!!!

GM Engineers Arrested for Racing C8
Corvettes in Kentucky
Driving the new ‘Vette is a blast, but it's not worth jail time.
BY WESLEY WREN JAN 13, 2020
The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is a feat of engineering, a blast to drive and a surprising bargain with a sub $60K starting price. For a pair of GM engineers, though, the C8 'Vette might have been too much fun. Apparently, Kentucky State Troopers charged two
engineers with "racing a motor a vehicle on a public highway," amid other charges.
The two engineers, Alexander Thim and Mark Derkatz, were caught going 120 mph and
100 mph (respectively) in their C8 Corvettes. This would have been a problem on practically any interstate in Kentucky, but Automobile reports the two were traveling in a
45-mph zone.
The cars were reportedly impounded, with the drivers heading to the Warren County
Regional Jail. Both drivers have been released on a $1,000 bond, according to Bowling Green, Kentucky’s local ABC affiliate. The cars were released to their “owner,” which we
can only assume was not pleased to pick up the cars.
The two GM engineers have to return to court Feb. 18 for their pretrial conference. They're facing charges of exceeding the speed limit by 26 mph or more, reckless driving
and the aforementioned racing a motor vehicle on a public highway.
We'd bet GM isn’t happy about its engineers' antics. There was also a third engineer in another C8 Corvette on the scene who wasn’t participating in these shenanigans. We
don’t know what’s going to happen to the engineers implicated in these crimes, but it probably won’t end well.

CAR-TOON CREATURES, KUSTOM KARS AND CORVETTES:
THE ART AND INFLUENCE OF ED “BIG DADDY” ROTH
December 12, 2019
The National Corvette Museum has teamed up with Tom Peters, retired Director of Exterior Design for the 8th Generation Stingray Corvette, to put together a new
exhibit: Car-toon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.
“Ed Roth was one of Tom’s biggest artistic influences growing up,” said Bob Bubnis, Museum Historical Media Coordinator and lead Curator of this exhibit. “Back in the
1950s and ’60s, kids who liked cars bought hot rod magazines along with t-shirts, models, stickers and toys from Roth Studios. They featured caricatures of cars with
giant smoking slicks and fire coming out of the exhaust, with blown engines and
cartoon monsters at the wheel. Tom would begin copying those drawings, and in the process, he learned about how to draw cars with personalities and attitudes.
The monsters were just cool. The most notable one was Rat Fink, who will serve as the mascot throughout this exhibit.”
After a photo op with a giant Rat Fink statue, the tour will begin with a re-creation of Ed Roth’s garage. In addition to being a cartoonist and t-shirt designer, Roth
was a car constructor and pinstriper, with many of his cars on loan for the exhibit.
Thanks to Roth car collector and President of Galpin Motors, Beau Boeckmann, guests will be able to see the Orbitron, Mysterion, and Tweedy Pie, as well as Ed’s
personal truck that he would use to do his pinstriping work from. On loan from The Petersen Museum is The Outlaw, and from the National Automobile Museum in
Reno, Nevada is Beatnik Bandit.
A journey through the exhibit will take visitors through a 1960s toy store where they can see the vintage toys that sprang from Roth’s imagination. See everything
from key chains, sticker collections, statues, and of course, model kits. Millions of models were sold to kids like Tom Peters, fueling the passion for cars. Roth’s
silkscreen shop with the actual equipment he used to make those t-shirts will also be on display.
The Museum is bringing in cars from builders who were inspired by Ed Roth, such as the Iron Orchid built by Dave Shuten, Gary Reid’s Bubble Ray Corvette and a
Rat Rod. This part of the exhibit showcases the personal takes enthusiasts have had on Roth’s work.
The exhibit will feature other surprises along the way, with the tour ending
featuring a re-creation of Tom’s studio at the GM Tech Center, along with one of the Corvettes he designed from the Transformers movies. To face off with that
Corvette, we’re also going to have a special car on loan from Galpin Auto Sports–their new Galpin Ford GTR1 supercar. The cars, together, dramatically show how
Ed Roth influenced the automotive world as a whole. The match-up is especially fitting as Roth’s t-shirts often played on the rivalry between Chevy and Ford.
“Ending the exhibit like this seemed like the perfect homage to his legacy,” added
Bob.
“Anyone from that era will love taking a trip back through time to see these cars
and artifacts together in the same place,” said Bob. “In addition to that though, we will be introducing Rat Fink and his gang of crazy creatures to a new generation.
There will be lots of friendly monsters throughout the exhibit to keep young people entertained. I can see grandparents bringing their grandchildren and sharing their
stories from that important time in history. Maybe they’ll even want to buy one of
the models they built back then to put together now.”
A major part of our Museum’s mission is to offer experiences that fall in line with
S.T.R.E.A.M. curriculum. Using touch screen monitors, videos of Tom Peters, GM
staff and Galpin Auto Sports will show school groups how Science, Technology,
Robotics, Engineering, Art and Math all come together to make these amazing cars. The exhibit is aimed at encouraging young people to discover what they are good
at and build upon those skills with an education that they can take to the workplace. The touch screens will go back to a tour experience aimed more at
adults between school visits. “It’s all very exciting and innovative,” said Bob.
“Sadly, Ed isn’t with us anymore, but his wife, Ilene Roth, has given us her
enthusiastic blessing to make this happen. She is working with us to bring together lots of artifacts such as Ed’s art supplies, his tuxedo, antique toys, and even some
things that have not been seen by the public ever. She is also planning to host a
special ‘East Side’ version of the Rat Fink Reunion here in Bowling Green, KY, bringing together licensed Rat Fink artists and the cool people and cars that
celebrate the legacy of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth,” Bob added.
Visitors won’t have to be into the Kustom Kar scene, Rat Rods, Rat Fink or
Transformers to enjoy this exhibit. “We are making it a walk-through time, when John Kennedy was the President, The Ventures were on the radio, and gas was 20
cents a gallon. Maybe along the way we will inspire some young people to start
thinking about where they will take the automotive story from here.”
This exhibit will run from January 31, 2020 through December 2020, with the East
Side Rat Reunion set for August 20-22, 2020.

Answer for the February Trivia
1) The first emblem for the Corvette actually had a U.S. flag in it. But 4 days
before the Corvette was introduced, GM Management realized that it was improper and illegal. So they quickly replaced the U.S. flag with the red
Chevrolet bow-tie and fleur-de-lis.
2) In 1955, when Chevrolet offered the first V-8 in the Corvette they ‘over-sized’
the ‘V’ to show that a V8 was installed in a particular car.
3) 1963
4) The Sting Ray name was not used on the 1968 Corvette, but returned in 1969
spelt Stingray.
5) 1983
6) The 1997 Corvette C5 is the first Corvette designed from the ground up to be a
Corvette.. Not borrowing parts from other cars. One of the few "Off the Shelf" parts - the exterior door handles, same ones used on the Oldsmobile Aurora.
7) Non-pop up headlights
