Gents’ Captain’s Update

Well fortunately unlike my golf the weather has improved! July and August have been very busy months at the golf club. We have hosted 3 large Charity events in August the Abaco golf day raising money for Warners Wish, Everards golf day raising money for Prostaid and The Cardiac Golf day raising money for Heartsafe now rebranded by Doug as "Heartwize" due to copyright infringement. It amazes me the enthusiasm of members who go the extra mile to organise and support such events and between the 3 days we will have raised well over £12,000 for charities. I think it's well worth the inconvenience of giving up the course for 3 days and reflects the huge generosity of our membership. The men's scratch team finished 3rd in the league and a big thanks must go to Matt Hilton who has captained the side admirably. We don't have a vast pool of cat 1 players to draw from and in most games we "punch well above our weight" to grind out results. Congratulations go to Alex Frith our new Gentleman's Club Champion with 2 excellent rounds of 69 and 73. The second round was interrupted by a thunderstorm but he remained cool and collected to finish the job and I think everyone would agree is a very popular and worthy winner. Nick Preedy won the Under 35’s Championship with a gross scores of 70 & 72. Tom Hoy was 2nd having had a hole in one on the 4th. Best nett was Jason Poxon Also congratulations to Dave Wardle and Jimmy Green for winning the John Cheatle Foursomes with a record net 65 (gross 68). Rob and Tom Morgan have secured a place in the final of the Daily Mail foursomes competition at St Pierre Chepstow from 16 to 18th October which is an awesome achievement. Can they do a "Leicester City" for us? (Sorry Rob the Hammers are not quite good enough for inspiration) As the nights draw in it reminds me of how time passes so quickly and how soon we will be into the Swindle season and another golfing year will be over. I hope you all have had as good a time as I have.

Regards Stuart

Away from the golf course the Golf Club Cricket team have been victorious at the Party in the Park. Fantastic performances were put in by the father and son pairing of Danny and Ben Spillane both competing for MVP. Unfortunately yours truly was struck in the "middle wicket" with the last delivery of the day 😲 but at least remained not out!

LADY CAPTAIN’S UPDATE

The season is flying by and thankfully in the last few weeks we have had some beautiful weather in which to play our golf.

The highlight this year is the ladies winning the County Foursomes title, a great achievement. I am informed that the last time that Rothley ladies made it to the final and in fact went on to win was in 1969 when we were represented by Alex Grocock, Christine Portch, Pat Lane and Barbara Taylor.

The hottest day of the years being Lady President’s day, unfortunately there were a few ladies who wilted in the hot conditions but most made it to the finish line.

A very big thank you to Janice for a thoroughly enjoyable day, I know it was a little stressful for her also worrying about the weather but instead of thinking is it going to be rained off as I was on my Captain’s day she was worried about the excessive heat. What a funny world we live in.

Despite the hot sticky conditions the day was enjoyed by all, and there were some very good results, thank you Janice for the lovely hospitality at the 12th the afternoon tea and prize presentation. The overall winner on the day was Vic Standring with 38pts and the scratch prize was won by Maz Sharpe.

The scratch and handicap teams have had a steady year, unfortunately there are no promotions but we look

likely to hold our places in the present divisions.

Our ladies Club Championship was held on Sunday 21st August and once again was a great success. As well as our low handicap players who competed over 36 holes we also had a bronze division championship and a 18 hole competition. Having been blessed with a lovely weather the presentation was held on the patio in great party spirit.

Well done to our 2016 Club Champion Maz Sharpe, to the bronze Champion Jan Dorn and Alice Quemby the winner of the 18 hole nett prize.

I am now very much looking forward to the ladies weekend away at Newark and Woodall Spa, and my away day at Worksop Golf club.

I would like to thank everyone for their support throughout what I hope you will agree has been a great season.

I was deilighted with my President’s Day, 63 ladies played on the hottest day of the year with some very good scores, Vic Standring won the Presidents prize and Maz Sharpe the scratch. My sincere thanks for the generous donations of £601.00 to my charity Rainbows. I am also grateful to all the Gentlemen and Ladies who helped and supported me on a very happy day.I have supported most of the ladies scratch matches, county fours etc and watched our girls play some excellent golf. On a sad note a long standing member of the ladies section Pam Reynolds sadly passed away recently. Pam also was

ladies captain and lady president and served on the ladies committee in many capacities over the years. She was a member since 1959 in later years being an honorary member because of her service to the club. We were all very upset when she had a stroke 15 years ago but she still never lost her enthusiasm for the club and was always interested in what was going on till the very end.

LADY PRESIDENT’S

DAY

I was delighted to present Barbara Taylor with a bouquet of flowers on the occasion of her being a member of the ladies section for 60 years. Together with her husband Gordon they were captains together in 1972 and she was Lady President in 1990. She played for the county second team, and won the ladies championship along with many other trophies, she is an honorary member of the club because of the support and work given over the years and we are pleased to see her often around the club mainly playing bridge.

In the period since the last newsletter we have not had any trophy competitions upon which I can report. However, on Thursday 11th August we held the 25th anniversary running of our Old John betterball competition. This is the second seniors’ open competition of the year in which the Seniors’ Section is closely involved. The competition was founded by Peter Kemp who was very actively involved in the run-up to the competition and very generously donated the three nearest the pin prizes and a specially embossed ball to each competitor. It was very fitting that Peter agreed to present the prizes at the end of the day. Entries for this event have been decreasing over recent years but thanks to a special marketing effort by the Club and the Section, this year’s event was a sell-out with 176 competitors from 53 clubs taking part. Particular thanks goes to all who helped in the preparation for this event and the volunteers on the day. We are also very grateful to Farmer & Carlisle who once again generously sponsored refreshments for each competitor at the caddy shack. The day went well, with excellent weather but was not without incident. The “Trent Lock Two” managed to go to Kibworth G.C. instead of Rothley and arrived, full apologies, two and a half hours later. What is it about Kibworth? Earlier this year, one of our more “retiring" members, managed to go to Hinckley instead of Kibworth for an away match. To spare his blushes, he shall remain anonymous except to say that he has a strong South African accent! The Old John result saw the Rothley pair of Ian Dawkins and Brendan Kaveney coming second and another Rothley team of our Sections' vice- captain, Jim Needham, and his partner Richard Ashdown, coming fourth. This would have been quite a profitable day for Jim had he not scored his first hole in one in a field of 176; fortunately Jim managed to delay his return to the clubhouse until most of them had left. Shame on Rothley for charging him £25 for a bottle of Scotch, a mean reward for a notable achievement. Our match results continue to generally follow the pattern of home wins and away losses, although our recent game at Market Harborough resulted in a win, 5-3, a significant improvement on our last visit when we lost 0-8. Back at home, congratulations to John Dekonski and (almost inevitably) Stan Piecha, on reaching the final of our summer singles knock-out. Best of luck in the final to both of you: tip to John, beware the sudden death play-off! Finally, coming up, we are inaugurating a new competition. The Section has been presented with a new trophy in memory of the late Barry Greet. It is intended that this will be competed for in our last qualifier of the season, the winner of which will be declared the Seniors’ Section Handicap Champion for 2016. I will be emailing Section members direct with details shortly. Ian Freeman Seniors’ Section Captain

The Presidents Jug match took place at Rothley on Sunday 24th July. The juniors were represented by Ben Spillane and Dylan Bamford who played well but lost 1 down. The overall result was an 11 1/2 - 5 1/2 win for Rothley.

We lost our league match away against Kirby Muxloe on 28th July 6–0. Everyone got off to a slow start and ran out of holes. Joe Hoy, playing at Kirby for the first time, fought valiantly and had the closest match, losing 3/1.

On 10th August Elliott Izard won the division 1 stableford with 38 points and came down to 27. Jack Hancock came second with 37 points. Tom Fraser won division 2 with 27 points.

Henry Green won the Junior Captains Day Trophy for Division one with 35 points, Jack Hancock was second with 34 and Thomas Horsnall was 3rd with 32. Eric Walker won the Holiday Cup in Division two with 33 points. Theo Chappell was second with 28. Jack Horsnall won the putting competition, Thomas Horsnall won nearest the pin and Toby Jansen won the longest drive. Both girls made it to the 7th hole, Poppy Burbidge holed out to win by a shot from Emily Spillane.

6 players took part in the junior stableford on 26th August. Eric Walker won with 41 points; Jack Hancock was second with 38 and now leads the junior order of merit. Dylan Bamford was 3rd with 36 points.
