From Commodore Phill - INTERMEDIATE SAILING – VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTOR NEEDED

As you may know, Laura and Seamus have been running the intermediate sessions on Sunday mornings since our Learn to Sail classes in Sept.

Laura cannot do any more Sundays as her Phd commitments take her time away. I will be running the last session of the year on the 15th Dec with Seamus. It will be on this Sunday.

Intermediate sessions are proving very popular and are an important way for beginning sailors to get into club sailing. Only yesterday a new family joined the club with a goal of using these sessions to get the kids into sailing. This is a vital way of growing our club membership.

Can we please have a volunteer to run the class from Feb til March next year. Seamus has offered to help run the classes again. If you can only do some of these dates that would be fine as I can fill in the other dates. If two or more people volunteer then the dates can be shared. SPOT THE FAKE NEWS

There’s a new occasional segment in the Newsletter………spot the FAKE NEWS. Winner is the first to

send me the correct answer to [email protected]

The winner is Trent – well done! The boat taking Shades wind was actually Kynan’s keel-boat, not

Serenity

NOTE: no intentional fake news this week

IDLE GOSSIP

(Please send anything interesting sailing or club related to Mark ([email protected])

Former 125 sailor Tish was spotted practising on his new NS14 last Sunday (and his 125 was spotted

for sale on Gumtree ;-)) Tish commented “the 125 has as much sail as an NS14, but it sails like a brick!

– must be the hull shape”

Gennakers 8 Dec 2019 (thanks Michael & Dave Scott)

From Michael – With a fair SE wind and a good starting line, the gennaker fleet of six Formula Fifteens and two RS100’s got off to a reasonably level start except for Garry in the RS Hooray, who was seen to hit the line near the boat a tad early and be forced to gybe around for another approach.

The decision of Second Wind (Michael & Tara) to start on the port end failed when, with only a short hop to the Northern shore, she was forced to cross behind the whole fleet on port tack, shortly after the start.

But the five top fifteens set off in a very close, lead changing tussle up the first windward leg. Magic Formula (Zac and Clare) and Secret (Barry and Anna) diced for first spot, while Second Wind, Toxic (Tom & Brendan) and You Only Live Once (Daniel and Pip) snapped closely at their heels and changed positions with every tack. Mr Bond (Laura and Francine) and the RS100’s Wine Down (David) and Hooray brought up the rear.

As the pack rounded the top mark for the first time and popped their kites, the tacking dual became an equally tight, five boat, gybing dual.

A significant event occurred on this first run when Secret mistimed a gybe and capsized kite up; making for a slower recovery. But far from leaving Magic Formula with an easy lead, a poor douse let Second Wind and Toxic catch up for a close next work and run, leaving the three of them rounding the bottom mark for the second time essentially together.

Magic Formula eased just enough ahead to leave Toxic and Second Wind as the boats having to fight it out for second place; every of the many crossing on the narrow river course being breath holdingly close. Secret’s first attempt to get back in the race came to an end as Anna fell out of the boat, resulting in another capsize. But in a remarkable recovery, somewhere up the last long run and work Secret closed the gap, overtaking Toxic after it fluffed a spinnaker douse, but it was not quite able to catch Magic or Second Wind. Magic beat Second Wind by 30 seconds with Secret another half minute behind.

From Dave -

It was a small fleet of RS100s, with Vincent, Duncan and Bill H away. That left the two Scotts (old friends but unrelated) Garry and Dave who were excited as the prospect of coming first and second for a change! Newcomer to the class Dave Scott got a great start but sadly that was about it. He just couldn't maintain the same boat speed as Garry to windward who soon caught up and then drew ahead to be 100 metres ahead at the first mark. Dave had a few technical issues with his new boat and struggled with the kite, capsizing on his first gybe. It was the first of three. Despite one capsize Gary sailed a solid race and finished without being lapped by the F15s which were loving the conditions. Dave however was ignominiously lapped by every F15, but he was happy to have finished!

Mono report 8/12/19 (thanks Graham H)

A glorious early summer day presenting a light to moderate and fairly steady south-easterly breeze; all on the last run out of a small tide - bliss! Christmas festivities seemed to have taken a toll on the fleet size; so we had a mixed crew of Northies (welcome back Greg on G1 and G3's old boat Sherlock), Des on Olde Gold, Mark, Julie and Sophie on the club's Corsair, Sean back for a second round on the Tasman Tiger and the Ivan Bathgate conquering Kate on her 4.7 rigged Laser.

Championship Race-winner Kate, waving good-bye to the boys – well done, Kate!! The start line was lined up for a small starboard tack bias that led to an easy safe start and a very competitive first few hundred metres. G2 on Retro was making the most of the conditions to lead from Greg in Sherlock and G3 in Alter Ego; with Trent and Daisy nipping at their heels. Des (!) and Kate locked together only a short distance behind. G3 followed Greg towards the mud island and observed the sudden judder and spin that could only mean that the island had claimed another mono race leader....after tacking clear Alter Ego cleared Retro and still held a small break on Graeme Garden.

CAPTION COMPETITION – Winner is the sender of

the funniest caption to [email protected]

That lead was not headed for the rest of the race despite some mighty efforts from the double-handed Northy. The race for third spot saw Greg slip past G2 and hold onto a lead of only a few seconds, the pesky Laser tucked in behind only a minute or so away; followed by Des, the Tiger and the Corsair. There was no need for white knuckle waiting on this day, that Laser was far too close to the scratch boats, so Kate on Bluey scored back-to-back Championship wins - well done indeed!

Sean, left, in his Tassy Tiger, about to overtake the

club Corsair – well done Sean!!!

Cat Report (thanks Jonathon – Ed)

The forecasts for a change aligned, for a SE breeze and that is what arrived. Starting about 10 knots with

some gusts. The choice for a course was a standard SE with the cats going to a buoy off Shaws Bay, giving a

mix of tight and broad reaches. The cat fleet increased but Cat Man was unable to sail , still hoblling. Finely

Tuned was back with Seamus on board his regular ride. 2 FOOT Extra called in another substitute crew,

Evan, his first time out on a large cat, as Martine was away. Alan and Jenny were back on No Waiting, Geoff

on Neo and Ian Michie brought out his A class ESP 7 to give some serious competition to the fleet. Eight

cats faced the start line, First Strike, “A”, Finely tuned, 2 FOOT Extra, Ozspray, No Waiting, ESP7 and Neo.

Neo leading the fleet at the start.

The first work up through the narrows saw many close calls, including calls for water, but the fleet made it

safely to the buoy off Mobbs Bay.

Michael and Ian had a great battle for the lead up to the top mark, Ian by a very small margin.

This tussle continued to the buoy off Shaws Bay ,where Michael having taken the lead, rounded too close to

the buoy and hooked the buoy rope with his centre board and then his rudder, allowing Ian to move into the

lead, where he stayed for the rest of the race. The rest of the fleet saw the problem and all took wide

roundings fir the rest of the race. Finely Tuned and 2 Foot Extra closed on Michael and the three cats tussled

to the sand point when Finely Tuned picked up a gust and pulled away. Neo and Ozspray both took

advantage of the tussle and cut underneath the three cats using the superior performance of the 4.5’s

downwind in the light breeze.

At the bottom buoy. ESP 7 lead from Neo, Finely Tuned, “A”, Ozspray, 2 FOOT Extra, First Strike and No

Waiting. The breeze slowly increased as the race went on. This increased breeze and the improved team work

on board, as Evan becoming more familiar with the workings of the 5.8, allowed 2 FOOT Extra to work its

way back up through the fleet. First passing Ozspray on the next work and almost catching Neo on a tight

reach to Shaws Bay. The downwind saw 2 FOOT Extra close the gap to both “A” and Finely Tuned although

Neo again got in front. The work up through the narrows had all four cats close and after “A” called

starboard on both Neo and Finely Tuned, 2 FOOT Extra took advantage and was able to pass both cats in

short time.

The race order was now almost sorted with only more major change occurring when 2 FOOT Extra passed

Phill on Ozspray and 2 FOOT Extra a distant third. The handicaps series went to Tony on First Strike from

Neo and Ozspray.

Great work Evan, quickly learning the ropes on the 5.8 under race conditions.

Many thanks to all those club members who helped, Special thanks to Rick and Roland for running the

rescue boat. A very enjoyable afternoons sailing. Thank you to the Morgan’s for more great photos.

Trailables C-C 081219 (thanks Col – Ed)

ummm .. everyone was at Xmas barbies

..so nobody came .. well except for

Rabbit and Treasure Isle.

It was such a nice day, with

light/moderate SE wind, and the sun

was shining thru the smoke … the 2

boats were in super-chilled mode.

Just shows that Trailable sailors are a

more sociable bunch, all off to social

events, as the other Classes mostly

turned up, and the skiffs on our course

had a great fleet and great close racing.

Assured of a place, Treasure Isle rigged

with the 2nd

esky option, and JK from

Spudgun enjoyed the social atmosphere

to add to the crew.

I saw the other fleets also had some

crew swaps, and social additions, in

true Chrissy atmosphere.

Anyway .. we went round and round,

on the standard SE Course, and then we

put the boats away and had nibblies on

the veranda … nice day sailing on the

river.
