We have an excellent membership, solid facility, and exceptional staff. All that remains missing is the right weather to bring everything together. The good news is that April is just around the corner. Our membership remains at a reasonably healthy level. We have approximately 850 regular, senior, intermediate, weekday, or junior members and nearly 370 Ex- ecutive, Executive 100, or Tennis members. These numbers represent an increase of 13% in total members from last year. The number of members is one indicator of health, but another significant indicator is determined by the number of rounds of golf. From 1985 through 2005, we averaged 85,000 rounds (total both courses), peaking at just over 93,000 in 1999. From 2000 through 2018 our rounds de- clined to approximately 48,000. We believe a healthy number for Windyke is in the 65,000-70,000 round range. Last year we returned to 58,152 rounds which is the most rounds our club has had since 2012. Assuming we have 100 more members this year than last, and each new member plays 60 rounds, we should have less than 65,000 rounds in 2020. Some members have expressed concern about the increased play. Sixty-five thousand is 12th lowest round count in the history of the club. We are confident we can fully serve and accommodate our members at that level of activity. We have turned the corner, but we continue to need more members to ensure the sustainability of the club. The average attrition for us has been approximately 200 members per year. So, just to maintain our current level, we need to attract at least 200 new members in the coming season. To show appreciation for your efforts in helping us build a solid member base, we will continue our member refer- ral program. If you are designated as the primary reference for a new member, you will receive a club activity credit equal to the full month’s dues amount of the joining member. This credit will be posted to your account upon the new member’s acceptance and payment of their initial deposit toward their initiation fee. You are truly our best sales force and marketing machine and we hope this small gesture shows our appreciation. As the club is returning to healthy levels, we are adding back the membership join- ing (initiation) fee beginning on April 1st. We will offer a program where the new member will pay 25% of the fee and sign a one-year contract that will waive the remainder of the balance if they stay the entire year. If you have a friend who has been considering joining, let them know the month of March will be the end of the sign a one-year contract program to completely waive the joining fee. They will be responsible for the dues in March if they join during the month, but they won’t have to add the 25% deposit. ARTICLE CONTINUED ON PAGE 2>

Turning PointWe are on track to have a very positive year at Windyke. We have an excellent membership, solid facility, and exceptional staff. All that remains missing is the right weather to bring everything together. The good news is that April is just around the corner.

Our membership remains at a reasonably healthy level. We have approximately 850 regular, senior, intermediate, weekday, or junior members and nearly 370 Ex-ecutive, Executive 100, or Tennis members. These numbers represent an increase of 13% in total members from last year. (All of the above fees are subject to the current TN sales tax rate of 9.75%)

Cart fees and Trail fees will not increase in 2020. We remain committed to providing the best value for high qual-ity golf in the Mid-South. We will keep our fees competitive while continuing to upgrade and renovate our existing courses, practice areas, buildings, and services. Thank you for the continued participation and effort in making membership in your club the exceptional quality and rewarding experience that it is.

Spring weather will start to appear this month, I hope all of you are as excited as we are! The club staff and the Member Board have been doing a lot of research, planning and preparing for the season ahead.

Our Season Opening Kickoff Event is planned for Saturday April 4. The event will feature infor-mational programming for ladies’ golf, men’s golf, swim team, junior golf programming and junior tennis programming. In addition to the informational areas, we will have inflatables, face painting, kids play areas and dinner available from 5:00 to 7:30 at The Clubhouse. Long time members, new members and anyone wanting to learn more about our club wide programing and benefits for this upcoming season should plan to attend this event.

The Windyke Clubhouse continues its long-range plan to accommodate the increasing demand for din-ing options and events here at your club. Many of you have noticed the temporary walls in some areas. This first phase of kitchen expansion should finish up around the end of the month. We do not antici-pate any disruptions to our daily service, but as always watch our social media and weekly updates for the most up to date information.

We anticipate the roll out of many menu changes beginning in April with the new expanded kitchen. Make sure to look for the expanded dining options, and new menu options as Steven and Chef Daniel roll them out in next month’s newsletter! As always please share any of your thoughts and suggestions with our staff or me personally. Thank you for your support of the club! Greg Hynes

CONGRATS! Hole In OneSCOTT WOMACK feb 15 EAST NO. 8 167 YDS 6 IRON

If you are not a member of the hole in one club or you don’t know about the hole in one club, then the next time that you are out ask the golf shop staff for help in signing up.

It’s almost that time again! Last year was the 11th year for our very successful Tuesday Night Men’s Group. This year promises to be the biggest and best one yet with some exciting new changes to the formatting. The formats will remain similar to last year’s Men’s Night with two divisions. For several years we have been flighting the event so that players were only competing against players of similar abilities.

Due to the success of the flighting we went one step further. We included a scratch division two years ago. The formats will closely follow the regular formats, but there will be no handicap involved. The purpose of this was to not only attract more players but to also allow more players to feel as if they have a great chance of competing no matter their handicap. This will strictly be a voluntary flight so you will have to sign up for it each week and can go back and forth if you choose between the scratch division and the regular division. There will be a 6 and below index suggest-ed to play in the scratch and all players will play from the gold tees regardless of age. This was something that was asked for by players already playing in Men’s Night and we hope that those interested will not only participate, but get their friends who have not played in Men’s Night before to play as well.

This year we will again award points for playing and for finishing “in the money.” We will then keep up with the points and post them to our website so that you can track your progress. We will use $1 of each player’s weekly entry fee to build a pot that will be awarded to the top 20 players after the season is over at the final event, which will be held on Sunday, October 11.

One of the reasons that we feel we were so successful is there is no league to join and you did not have to play in every event to win. This will still be the case with 95% of the weekly entry fee going directly to that week’s event. So if you are a new member or have been around since the trees were planted, this will be a great time for you to come out and meet other Windyke members or maybe find a new group to play with during other times of the week. We again will be making the pairings each week so sign up will be strictly individual. One of the main reasons for starting this group is for members to meet other members and get out of the routine of playing with the same old group each week.

A few of the most important points are listed below:• Tuesdays at 5:30 for the majority of the season• Call to sign up by 3:00 on the Tuesday that you wish to play• Official play with points April 7–October 6 with the Final being on Sunday, October 11• $20 per week to play including cart and prizes• Prizes paid out each week• Windyke pro shop staff to make pairings each week• Points race for a year-long champion• Optional dinner while you wait for prizes• Lots of fun!

This group is a huge success because of your feedback and your commitment to support it. In order to keep it suc-cessful we will again need your support and participation. We also need you to tell your friends so that this group will continue to grow.

The goal of this article is to help the Windyke membership understand the dynamics of face angle at impact. It is one of my greatest points of emphasis in my lessons. Take a look at what a few instructors say about face angle based on launch monitor data and look at Justin Thomas’s data below:

“The biggest influence to the starting direction of the golf ball is face angle. With this param-eter, we are not necessarily always looking for zero. Every golfer shapes the ball differently and I always look for a controllable and consistent difference between the face angle and club path.” ~ Jamie McConnell, JM Golf Academy, Ireland

“Face angle is the primary contributor to where the ball starts. A fade starts left – therefore the face angle needs to be left (closed) of the target at impact. A draw starts right – therefore the face angle needs to be right (open) of the target at impact. Pay close attention to face angle at address. Invest in a face alignment tool to make certain that you have the face aim correct. In most cases, golfers have the face aiming left at address. They do it even more so with higher lofted clubs.”

~ Chris Brook, PGA International Golf Club, UK

What is remarkable about this data is the ability of Thomas to return the club with only three-tenths of a degree off center, while the path is only seven-tenths of a direct path. Obviously, he hits it very straight! If you move the ball in the air, the goal is to get a repetitive face angle first, and then a path to match it. For help with this concept, call the shop and book a les-son.

FROM THE BOARDThank you to everyone who played in this year’s first tournament of the year, THE IRONMAN. The field was completely full, the course was in great shape, the greens were immaculate, the weather was awe-some and fun was had by all! Don’t forget to play in as many tournaments as you can for your shot at the coveted honor of being crowned the Windyke Cup Champion at the end of the year.

Pictured here are the members of this year’s Windyke Board of Directors. The Board is made up of mem-ber volunteers from various levels of membership who devote their time to the betterment of the club. The Board acts as a liaison between the members and club owners to ensure that the needs of every type of member is represented. The Board meets once a month to discuss improvement opportunities, work on membership growth, discuss member issues and coordinate with the staff for upcoming events throughout the year. We appreciate and encourage your comments and feedback to help us make Windyke a better Club. You can email us at [email protected], or feel free to contact me directly at (901)230-2704. You can also provide input to any of the Board members as you see them around the Club.

Triple FormatApril 4 • West Course • 8:00 am Shotgun

Lunch Included

If you have never played in a Triple Format event then you owe it to yourself to check this one out. The way a Triple Format works is the first nine holes is a best ball, the second nine is a scramble, and then after lunch, the last nine is alternate shot. This is one of those formats that players talk about and tell stories for years to come. So, if you are looking to kick start your golf tournament season with a fun event then this one is for you!

Guidelines are as follows: • Two Person Teams• Make Your Own Team or sign up as an individual and we will pair you.• This event is open to all classifications of members and each team may have 1 guest• Each team’s handicap is based on the following formula using a players USGA index:

Sum of the two players index minus ½ of the difference. Example: Greg Hynes 4.0

Russ Garner 2.06 - 1 = 5

We will then use the team’s index to flight the teams before play. Once your team’s handicap has been used for flighting purposes it will not be used again.

• If you sign up as an individual, we can find you a partner• Windyke Cup points event!• Entry fee is $125 including cart and is payable by member charge, cash or check(includes prizes, cart and lunch).

• All players canceling after April 2 at 5 PM will be charged for the entry fee.

Tee Assignments: • Seniors 75+ play Red• Seniors 60-74 play White• Female and Junior Golfers under 12 with index of 7.5 and below play White Tees• Female and Junior Golfers under 12 with index of 7.6 and above play Red Tees• All other players play Gold• Championship Flight will play Blue Tees except Men 60+ will play Gold

• Approximate payout will be as follows (based on 108 players and 5 flights)First Place $700/TeamSecond Place $500/TeamThird Place $300/TeamFourth Place $200/Team
