Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, on Sunday, laid the

foundation stone for the Diamond Research and

Mercantile (DREAM) City and Surat Diamond Bourse

(SDM) project at Khajod in Surat. Interestingly, on the

occasion, diamond merchants from Surat and Mumbai

had done an extempore transaction of polished and

rough diamonds worth Rs 5 crore the payment of which

was done in the presence of the CM.

The event was also attended by a number of dignitaries,

including consulate generals and high commissioners of

countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Namibia,

Canada, Russia, Australia, Botswana etc. Apart from

them a number of top officials of the state government

also remained present.

Speaking on the occasion, Patel called the project

‘prestigious’ and said that it was likely to be completed in

three years. “Surat is a diamond manufacturing hub. We

wanted to make it the trading hub also and this will

result in several national and international buyers

coming here. This will be a boost to the industry and

thousands of people will get jobs.”

Patel said that the project had

been planned in such a way that

establishments of all important

sectors like housing, hospitals,

hotels, educational institutes,

residential and commercial

buildings would come up there.

During her address, Patel also

announced the government’s decision to give surplus

government land in urban areas to different municipal

corporations in the state to build houses for the urban

poor. “The order will come shortly,” she said.

Patel added that if the captains of textile industry come

forward with a proposal for setting up a textile university

then the state government would give them full

assistance.

Padmashri awardee Mathur Sawani said, “The diamond

business is a major source of foreign income for the

country. We are receiving applications for booking of

offices from diamond merchants in Surat, Mumbai and

even foreign countries. The model of Surat diamond

bourse will be finalised in next 15 days.”

CM Patel also visited the exhibition dome, where several

real estate developers also had displayed their upcoming

projects in the diamond city to visitors.
