A llen Doyle, Catholic Memorial class of 1966became the first back-to-back U.S. Senior Openwinner since Gary Player in 1987-88 and the oldestever at 57 years, 11 months and 17 days. It was a wellcontested match going into Sunday’s final round, July9th at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson,Kansas. Doyle battled Tom Watson on the last day andfired a 2 under 68 to beat Watson by two strokes. Lastyear, Doyle won his first U.S. Senior Open at NCRCountry Club in Kettering, Ohio by shooting an 8-under 63 in the final round to beat D.A. Weibring andLoren Roberts by one stroke.

While at CM, Doyle was a member of the varsityGolf and Hockey teams. Doyle wore number 6 on theundefeated hockey team of 1966, and that year theTalisman states, “Dick McGlynn and Al Doyle will beremembered by opposing players for their bruisingplay and constant effort.” After his four years atCatholic Memorial, he went on to Norwich Universitywhere he continued to hone his hockey skills. Hebecame a golf professional at age 47, wondering if hecould handle the rigors of a touring life. He’s appliedthe hockey mentality to his golf game.

“The hockey mentality, that’s exactly what it is,”he said. “I had a guy tell me that I was a golfer in ahockey player’s body.”

A native of Norwood, Massachusetts, Allen livesin LaGrange, Georgia and is active in running the family’s driving-range business. We congratu-late our very own Allen Doyle on his remarkable accomplishment. b

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE

The 2006-2007academic year had agreat start and alreadywe have reached thehalfway point. TheSchool year beganwith many excitingdevelopments.

Thanks to the efforts of two of theSchool’s most generous benefactors tocapital improvements, The Albert M.Todesca, Jr. Memorial Golf Committeeand the Yawkey Foundation, we have beenable to greatly enhance our technologicalcapabilities on campus. CMTV, the closedcircuit television station of the School, hasexpanded its studio. Every morning, CMgoes on air with in-house news broadcastsconducted entirely by students. The newstudio has an expanded control roomwhich will allow our students betterediting and production capabilities. TheTodesca gift was earmarked for the televi-sion and production studios and therelated costs. The final product is one inwhich we can all be proud.

Computers and technologicaladvances have become an essential compo-nent to the teaching process. A grant fromthe Yawkey Foundation last year allowedus to begin renovations on the former resi-dence of the Christian Brothers creatingmore space for our teachers and adminis-trators. A few months ago we continuedrenovations to the second floor of themonastery to build a technology center. This new center will house between 30-40work stations and will give our studentsand faculty better access to the changingworld of technology. We have hired anadditional technology support person tooversee the day-to-day computer networkissues and Mr. Brian Scott has beenappointed Director of Technology.Currently 11 classrooms have beenequipped with LCD projectors and four classrooms have been outfitted with“smartboards.”

For only the second time in CatholicMemorial’s history we have expanded thefootprint of the School with the purchaseof a home at 61 Gardner Street. This prop-erty is directly behind and adjacent toDonahue Hall and has frontage on bothGardner and Dunwell Streets. This prop-erty along with the purchase of 14Springvale Street gives CM more flexibilityas it grows in its capacity to serve thestudents and faculty.

Every ten years a school must beaccredited by the New England Associa-tion of Schools and Colleges and this yearour formal re-accreditation is underway. Itis a three-step process beginning with aSelf-Study conducted by members of theCM community (faculty, alumni, parentsand Board of Directors). The self study isthen followed by an on-site visit made by acommittee representing the New EnglandAssociation of Schools and Colleges’Commission on Independent Schools. Thethird step is the follow-up process carriedout by the School to implement the recom-mendations of its own self-study and thosemade by the Visiting Committee.

The accreditation team from theNEASC conducted their site visit to CMOctober 1-4 and met with members of theentire School Community to asses everyaspect of our programs.

In conjunction with the self-study, webegan in the spring of 2005 an intensive, visionary process that produced a strategicplan. The Catholic Memorial StrategicPlan 2006-2012 gives us a blueprint forshort and long-term planning. My thanksto all the members of the CM Communityinvolved in these monumental tasks.

Many significant milestones in thehistory of the Christian Brothers andCatholic Memorial School are happeningsoon. This year, the Edmund Rice Chris-tian Brothers celebrate 100 years of education and ministry in the United Stateswith the establishment of our first school,All Saints School – in New York City.

Closer to home, CM will celebrate 50years since opening our doors onSeptember 9, 1957. We are celebrating ouranniversary on Saturday, September 8,2007, with “A Golden Knight” at theBoston Marriott Copley Square. Pleasemark you calendars now for this specialcelebration.

Most importantly I want to thankeach member of the School Communitywho has supported CM with theirgenerous gifts. Our School is truly blessedwith dedicated alumni, spirited parents, enthusiastic faculty and staff andwonderful friends who all come togetherto help make Catholic Memorial a betterplace for our students. The Annual Reportto Investors highlights the noteworthyaccomplishments made by our AnnualFund, the Joe Gibbons ‘62/CM Golf Tour-nament and gifts toward our endowment.Your donations allow CM to keep ourtuition increases to a minimum, enable usto hire and retain our devoted faculty andsupport our arts and athletic programs.Thank you once again to all of you who make an investment in a CatholicMemorial education.

I leave you with this quote fromAbraham Lincoln taken from a speech hegave when he was running for politicaloffice in the State of Illinois at the age of23, “Upon the subject of education, notpresuming to dictate any plan or systemrespecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in.” March 9, 1832.

Wishing you a peaceful and prosperous New YearSincerely,

Br. James J. MacDonald, C.F.C. ‘75President

Preparing for the needs of the 21st century and beyond:

CM Strives to Meet Strategic Planning Goals

The 2006-2007 academic year began with muchanticipation and excitement. Three significant develop-ments occurred at CM over the summer: the expansionof the Catholic Memorial Television (CMTV) studio, therenovation of the former Brothers’ residence to add anew technology and teleconference center and thepurchase of property directly behind Donahue Hall at 61Gardner Street.

Brother Oxx, “The Pioneer ofCMTV,” began CM’s first closed-circuit television productionduring the 1991-92 academic yearwith Mr. Gerry Fortin who servedas co-moderator of the newventure. The 1992 edition ofTalisman states, “CM entereduncharted airwaves with the intro-duction of CMTV. Sometimeslabeled ‘The Occasional NewsNetwork,’ the dedicated crewlabored through long board meet-ings, endless tapings, and precisefinal editing to bring a little bit ofhumor and information into theclassroom.” CMTV went on theair with 14 students and today itremains one of the most popularactivities on campus. In the past 15years, terms used in televisionproduction like VCR, Super 8, and

analog have been replaced by DVD burners, digitalrecorders and digital video – but the medium is aspowerful today as it was then.

Thanks to the generosity of the Albert M. Todesca,Jr., Memorial Golf Tournament, Catholic Memorial wasable to move forward with the planned expansion of the

studio and control room, essentially tripling the size ofthe former CMTV. The new set was designed by GregWilkins of Gwimby Design which also designed thestudios for WHDH-TV in Boston. Work continued at afeverish pace throughout the summer months andCMTV went on air in its new home on October 24.Currently, 15 students are part of CMTV. These studentsalso use the facility each day for a course in BroadcastJournalism.

At Catholic Memorial, CMTV is everywhere. Mr.Hahn, the current moderator of CMTV, estimates thatstudents will report on 150 different subjects this year. Not only are the students taping every athletic eventfrom middle school to Varsity games, they are alsopresent at the school plays, concerts, and award cere-monies. They also report on academic and athleticachievements and milestones such as years of service fora faculty member. CMTV goes live each morning with adaily news show. It’s more than just announcements. Each show begins with a morning prayer, followed by“The Pledge of Allegiance.” Two students anchor thenews desk with one student anchoring the sports desk. The production includes snippets from special events andhighlights from academic and athletic competitions.Sometimes students will produce humorous skits or eveninvestigative reports.

CMTV is not your typical high school televisionstudio. At Catholic Memorial, CMTV is a high schoolelective and the students earn course credit. The dailyinteraction and collaboration among the students is whatsets the program apart. According to Mr. Hahn, his roleis more advisory in nature. He believes that an essentialpart of the experience is the manner in which thestudents instruct each other. Also the leadership of theseniors plays an important part of the daily operation ofCMTV. The students work as a team to produce themorning broadcasts and feature stories. Students taketurns as Director of the daily shows and students collab-orate constantly.

Chief Technology Director Vince Montalbano, ’07says, “CMTV teaches me the importance of teamwork. One person cannot go out on their own to get a storydone or a show produced. It takes a team effort. Whetherserving as reporter, producer, director, or anchor, everymember of CMTV is involved in the operation of thestudio.” “The remodeling and expansion of CMTV hasbrought a more professional atmosphere to the news-casts,” says Sports Anchor, Angelo Todesca ’07. “Theincreased size of the new CMTVto almost triple the old studioallows for added personnel toproduce additional skits.”Montalbano adds, “Morecomputers allow for improvedproduction capabilities and thesoftware we use to produce theshows is equivalent to what theprofessional news stations use.”For Todesca and Montalbano,CMTV is a big part of theirCatholic Memorial experience. Each of them wants to pursuecommunications or broadcastjournalism when they entercollege next year.

New Technology CenterThe relocation of the Brothers’ Community from

their monastery at 235 Baker Street, to a home in Roslin-dale, has allowed CM to add much needed space forteacher and administrative offices. The largest space inthe Brothers’ residence was the reading room andcommon area toward the rear of the building. There wasalso a living room and a back porch. A grant from theYawkey Foundation gave CM the funds needed to beginrenovation of the residence and allowed the school tostart construction of a new technology center.

Now, more than ever, technology is an integral partof the learning experience at Catholic Memorial and ournew center will better equip CM students with thelearning skills they need to compete in the 21st Century.Today, the entire CM campus is wireless with 4 class-rooms already equipped with interactive “smartboards”.Mr. Brian Scott, Director of Technology, estimates thatwhen the new center is up and running, there will be 220

Expanding the FootprintIn another exciting development, during the summer

an opportunity presented itself that the school could notlet slip away. The home at 61 Gardner Street was put upfor sale. CM responded quickly and closed on the housejust two months ago. The property, with a lot size of12,000 square feet, is located immediately behindDonahue Hall and is the only home on the block withfrontage on both Gardner and Dunwell Streets. Thisproperty, along with the purchase of a home in 2005 at14 Springvale has enabled CM to expand the footprintof its campus. At this time, the precise use for the newproperty has not yet been determined, but thanks to thevisionary leadership of the Board of Directors toauthorize the purchase, CM now has more space toexpand student resources and provide for the future.

While traditional textbooks may never be replacedby computers, the methods of teaching are evolving tomeet the demands of students’ interest in the 21stcentury and Catholic Memorial is responding proac-tively to the shifting dynamics of academia. We remainsteadfast to our core mission: to instill in our students a mature commitment to the demands of Catholic Christian witness and a lifelong love of learning.

computers on campus for a ratio of 1 computer for every3.5 students. As part of the overall comprehensive Tech-nology Plan, each permanent classroom will be equippedwith ceiling mounted LCD projectors within thecalendar year. Catholic Memorial has also hired Mr. BobMontana, a computer engineer, to address the day-to-day technology issues that arise on campus.

As construction continues on the technology center,a new board room is being outfitted with video and tele-conferencing capabilities. This technology will enableBoard members to meet from across the country. It willalso offer students and faculty opportunities for distancelearning.

CMTV begins each program with a prayer. Here, Senior JohnMiele “on-air” with cameramen, Kevin Almeida ’08 and Greg Sabina ’09.

On Tuesday, June 12, 2006, Brian Leary ‘73 hosted another ina series of Catholic Memorial’s Businessmen’s Breakfasts at theoffices of Gadsby Hannah in Boston.

The featured speaker was Daniel Conley, Suffolk CountyDistrict Attorney – CM Class of ‘76. Dan has served Suffolk Countysince graduating from Suffolk Law School in 1983. Before becomingthe Suffolk County District Attorney, Dan served as an AssistantDistrict Attorney in Suffolk County and also as a City Councilor onthe Boston City Council.

In 2002, Dan was appointed Suffolk County District Attorney.Dan referred to this as his “baptism by fire” because this was a timewhen there was a rash of wrongful convictions that were exoneratedthrough DNA evidence that the District Attorney’s office dealt with.

Dan oversees 260 employees in the Suffolk County DistrictAttorney’s Office, half of which are attorneys and the other half arevictim’s advocates. His office handles 50,000 cases each year, onesixth of the total cases in the Commonwealth. Among the initiativesDan promotes are “jail works” involving the aggressive prosecutionof the “impact players” of crime in the city, institution of the “guncourt” and the establishment of the Family Justice Center whichprovides one location for the many services available to victims ofdomestic abuse.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office is proactive incrime prevention. In this area, Dan’s office addresses the Boys’ andGirls’ Clubs, schools and other youth organizations and faith basedgroups to impress the importance of the choices that the youth makeand the importance of making good decisions in life. One of Dan’smessages is, “it is better to meet in the classroom than the courtroom.”

We are all proud to call Dan “one of our own”. Dan credits his Catholic Memorial experience with instilling in him many of hisvalues along with the importance of ethics, fair play, integrity andpoise under pressure.

Asa 14-seed, CM entered the difficult Divi-sion I South bracket as a heavy underdog. In the first round, the Knights gave a hintof what was to come by pulling out adramatic 2-1 (penalty kicks) victory overpowerhouse New Bedford. A 1-0 shutoutof Mansfield followed before Brian Kean‘07 sent the Knights through to the titlegame with a last-gasp goal in a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory over 2-seedFalmouth. The offense had been timely, but it was the CM defense – led by theoutstanding play of Boston Herald All-Scholastic David McCoy ‘08 andexceptional goalkeeping of Connor Askins‘10 – that inspired this Cinderella Story.Facing a highly skilled Needham team inthe title game, the defense rose to the occa-sion yet again. With the score knotted 1-1,the gripping encounter went to overtimewhere McCoy headed in Stone’s cornerkick to give CM an astonishing champi-onship. The Knights fell to eventual statechampion St. John’s, 2-0, in the EMass titlegame, but their magical ride to postseasonglory will take its rightful place in the CMrecord books.

Administrative Organization Catholic Memorial is an academic faith

community for young men in grades

7-12. We endeavor to instill in our students

a mature commitment to the demands of

Catholic Christian witness and a lifelong

love of learning.

Catholic Memorial serves a range of

socio-economic backgrounds and academic

abilities. We embrace the diversity of the

neighborhoods and surrounding towns of

Boston by providing young men with a

challenging college preparatory experience

rooted in Gospel values. We want our

students to explore their academic, athletic,

creative, and spiritual potential as educated

gentlemen and citizens, and we want their

faith and ideals to find expression in service

to God, neighbor, and the Church.

With supportive parents and a dedicated

faculty and staff, we create within our

program an ethic of caring for the needs of

each student. In keeping with the tradition

of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice and the

Congregation of Christian Brothers, we

foster a passion for social justice and

respect for the dignity of those treated

least, lost, and last.

Letter to InvestorsFrom Doug Zack

I would like to thank each member of the Catholic Memorial School commu-nity whose generosity was instrumental in making the 2006 Annual Fund exceedexpectations and achieve record levels in both unrestricted and restricted giving. Iapplaud those volunteers who gave their time on behalf of the Annual Fund –Alumni Class Agents, Phonathon callers, Annual Fund Committee members, JoeGibbons ‘62 Golf Committee and all who gave their most precious resource toCatholic Memorial School. Our alumni, parents and friends who volunteer onbehalf of CM truly make a difference in the lives of the young men enrolled atCatholic Memorial.

Unrestricted giving to the Catholic Memorial Annual Fund has the greatestimpact on the daily life of the School. Since 2002, giving in this category hasincreased 151%; an amazing accomplishment considering CM also completed theInaugural Capital Campaign raising $2.2 million for the School during this sameperiod. Your support for the Annual Fund provides Catholic Memorial theresources necessary to be a leader in Catholic education in the Boston area.

Catholic Memorial School is creating a community of lifelong learners. Yourinvestment in CM will yield dividends for years to come. Thank you once again toall of our investors in a Catholic Memorial education.

With Gratitude,

Douglas H. ZackDirector of Advancement

The Young Alumni President’s Council Giving Society allows young alumni, who have graduated within the past15 years, to join the school’s prestigious President’s Council. Members receive an annual invitation to the Presi-dent’s Council dinner, attended by Council donors, Board of Directors and Trustees and are invited to additionalevents throughout the year. The minimum giving (corporate matching gifts included) levels for the Young AlumniPresident’s Council are as follows:

Page 27: CM Magazine: Fall 2006

I am grateful to my parents

for giving me the opportunity to

attend CM. As a student in the early

CM years I was fortunate to have

been among "legends" - Br. McKenna,

Ron Perry, Jim O’Connor and others.

We developed a "can do" attitude that

I have carried with me throughout my

life. CM is not just a school it is a

way of life with the extra curricula

and the interactions with other

students and faculty not just in the

classroom but outside of the class-

room. At a recent reunion of several

classes I could not help but realize

that the memories and feelings for

CM that I have were shared by all of

the classes whether celebrating their

45th reunion or their 15th reunion.

Knowing the CM culture is still alive

and well encourages me to support the

school and its mission so that others

will have the opportunity that I did.

Alumni Giving

Catholic Memorialwas the foundation of what I was to

become in the future. I was given an

outstanding education by the dedi-

cated faculty. The Christian Bothers

were clearly a big influence on me

and the things they taught me. The

influences of Brothers Al Heeran, Sam

Ryan and C.P. Ryan’s impact was such

that I became a Christian Brother. In

fact, I’m celebrating my 25th anniver-

sary as a brother this year. Recently,

attending my 35th reunion, it was

really great to see how CM has grown

and evolved. I was really impressed by

the new athletic facility and the level

of technology in the classroom

provided to the current students at

CM. Br. MacDonald and the staff

and faculty continue to provide a

valued christian education to another

generation of CM Knights.

Alumni Giving

As a high schooler, I was very confused. I had no idea

what I wanted to do with my life.

With the help of CM’s outstanding

faculty and staff, and all their guid-

ance and direction that they provided

me, I was able to answer those ques-

tions and lay the foundation of the

person I have become today.

The CM website promises “six years that will shape

a lifetime.” Simple, but it’s true for

our three sons. The dedication and

talent of the faculty and adminis-

tration is reinforced every night

when we hear a recap of the days’

events– from Mr. Chisholm’s

morning greeting to the academic

challenges posed during class to the

tireless coaches who mold young

athletes into young men.

The faculty and administration at

CM have provided a place where

our boys can grow academically,

socially, spiritually and athletically

– no small accomplishment given

the unique range of interests and

talents of our three sons. Each one

is treated as an individual and

challenged to do their best – ‘good

enough’ is not acceptable at CM.

Parents of Alumni (continued from page 34)

CM Legacy Society

Last year, a group of my classmates gatheredat the home of our friend, Tom Phinney ‘61 todiscuss establishing a “First Knight’s Fund” toassist those students who needed financial help

to attend Catholic Memorial. Shortly thereafter, a classmatementioned he would be supporting the School by donating aportion of his life insurance for our “First Knight’s Fund” andhis decision got me thinking along those lines.

For a lot of my classmates in the first graduation class, theatmosphere and type of education that Catholic Memorialoffered was the only way in which we would have graduated. It is my desire to give the young men of today the same oppor-tunity that I had in 1961. That is why I have decided to becomea member of the “CM Legacy Society.”

– Ed Stenson ‘61, Narragansett, RI

Edmund Rice dominates the central icon panel. He is a person of strength and vision. His eyes arelarge, taking everything in and revealing his compassion and understanding. This is not a vision|of a man imprisoned in a protective uniform.Edmund loved his habit, it was for him a symbol of his life’s dedication. He looks happy and at ease in it – like an old well worn suit, it suggests the driftof his being. Here he is very much a fatherly figure.

For a detailed description of this illustration, visit: http://www.edmund-rice.wa.edu.au
