Performance Notes
This lovely Wanetta Hill text provides opportunities for young men to enjoy singing phrases that are emotionally charged, and the tempo is slow enough that choral nuances may be enjoyed from beginning to end. The luscious chords underlying the description of one’s desire to love another serve to “tell the story” and free the voice to convey the emotions in the soul.
There should be few “gaps” in the phrases; constant “sound” should be the focus within the ensemble. Directors can be creative and a bit flexible, as the interpretation of the text comes to life in the chorus.
The drama unfolds toward the key change, then tapers off to quiet contemplation of the entire scenario, ultimately ending without a decision regarding the fate of love.
The use of dynamics, consonants, and syllabic inflection propels energy through the text, and the ability to create emotions within the choral phrasing. All seem to be paramount in giving life to the musical notation.
