Editor’s Note

A few years ago, I had the idea to write some Holiday standards in a jazz style. The first was Silent Night for SATB Voices (CM9370), We Three Kings for TBB Voices (CM9209) and SATB Voices (CM9259), and now Jingle Bells. The first two pieces were predominantly in but included other meters; however Jingle Bells in ! is entirely in .

Beginning with the main verse and chorus by John Pierpont that everyone knows, it is followed by the seldom-heard second of three verses. It is important that the melody is heard in the second verse which also contains countermelodies in both women's and men’s voices.

Sing this with “swing” in a “laid back” triple, not duple feel. For added interest, drums (with brushes) and a bass could be added. However, it can be done beautifully and stylistically with piano accompaniment only.

Pay close attention to the changes in dynamics so that the differences are easily distinguishable. Observe all of the articulations, especially on the “doo bops” at the beginning, in the interludes and going into the key change.

I hear this being performed by small choirs and concert choirs on a holiday program. I have kept the original melody with some (hopefully) interesting jazz harmonies, so the piece will be recognizable to audiences, yet interesting and fun.
