WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."This is what explanatory graphic

is supposed to be: a piece that breaks down for the reader what

happened at the scene step-by-step (according to one expert,

anyway). Diagrams showing bullet entry points and flight paths

certainly raise questions about the officer's version of the

story. Simple site diagram adds to the storytelling. The style

is appropriate for the subject matter. The graphic gives the

reader something to think about."

"Good use of type that also doubles as the main illustration."

"Love the double meaning. It's big, bold and eye-catching. I knew this was a winner when I first saw it."

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."Nice structure, especially

considering the 28 images!"

"This was such a great idea. I love the faces and personalities. You all must

be so much fun to work with. Next time, try putting names in small reverse type inside each photo. It would clean up the

page."

"Various sizes of faces keep the mugs visually interesting."

"Do you still have an opening? I want to work with this bunch

- the faces draw you in."

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."This is a topic that's be difficult to illustrate, but this is done quite well. The illustration is clever and funny - and it made me laugh out loud. The point is made without being too graphic or too crude. There's a certain utilitarian feel to the drawing style, somewhat like an airliner safety card, that helps make this less salacious. And if you can't publish this in college..."

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID...This features page was a standout because of its sleek design, handsome typography and most of all, its functionality. Creating a slightly smaller-than-life-size place setting for Chad Powell's "Pretty Pleasing" page on table etiquette was a clever move. It invites the reader to interact with this page - to turn it horizontally, set it on the table and look at the tips in context. This quality is one of the keys to helping newspapers stay relevant to modern readers.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."Of all the pages in this category, Lauren Case's "That's so Maric" design was far and away the most sophisticated. Sports is a section that likes to yell, so it was a pleasant surprise to see something that spoke softly, but still carried the same power. The typography is elegant, and the black-and-white photos create a magazine feel. In fact, this work would be at home in the big-time, professional sports magazines - lucky for the Daily Nebraskan, Lauren Case works for them instead (for now).

AdviserTuria Stark Williams1

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."The Connector's nameplate stood out from the other entries because of the sophisticated way it ties into the content of the pages. Its placement and size are consistent, but Marilyn Chen and Therese Mushock have altered it to mirror the cover story: A spider and web for "Spooky Art," and a hand-drawn look for the school's Majors Fair. In doing so, the name of the publication and the main story become one cohesive unit. Tweaking the nameplate in this subtle way is something readers can look forward to with each issue."

restraint. The judges all agreed, next time, don't use drop shadows in a timeline on a page with such

precision elsewhere."

"Beautiful photo. Nice page composition. Next time, try a

"Headline setup is very nice and works well above the fold. The

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."When the NCAA Tournament rolls around each year, it's a challenge

for designers to come up with something fresh. Mark Koenig

succeeded at that with this page, "A Basketball World Gone Mad." Rather than fall back on visual

sports clich's, the IDS created a professional-quality illustration of the big dance, one that engages readers. The poster-style cover

contains notes of whimsy that will draw in fervent fans and athletic

agnostics alike."

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID..."Taking the simple image of a spilled ink bottle was a great idea for the cover of this literary and art magazine (content and design-wise), and the black-and-white layout was executed very well. The slightly off-center placement and the shine on the bottle adds interest and brings your eye into the page, while the matted, spilled ink carries your eye across the spread and ends perfectly in the back corner with a black swipe in front of the word"silhouette." The added touch of the smudged title on the front really ties the layout together, while leaving the rest of the type clean and unsmudged lets the focus remain on the title and the central image."

College Media Advisers would like to thank Taylor Publishing Co. of Dallas, Texas and Frank Myers for printing The Best of Collegiate Design 16 for College Media Advisers, Inc. CMA appreciates and values this generous gift. This type of financial support of student media embodies the spirit of volunteerism surrounding CMA’s philosophy of giving back.

In the spirit of volunteerism, we advisers are proud to ask professionals and former students to give their time and expertise as speakers and contest judges. The judges for this contest gave their time and feedback free of charge. CMA appreciates and values this generous gift. Thanks to judges G.W. Babb, Anthony Bratina, Shweta Gamble, Ryan C. Healy, Sam Hundley, Miranda Mulligan, Stephanie Pittman, Walter Stricklin, Brandon Stuck, Robert Suhay, Robert Voros, Justin Webster, Martha Wright. They are introduced in the judges biographies in this publication.

Several staff members of the Office of Student Media at The University of Alabama at Birmingham spent a generous amount of time working with this contest. Amy Chambless helped catalogue the entries. Jaime Boring, a senior art major, designed the publication. Bill Neville assisted in production and contributed good ideas to the process.

More than 1,000 entries made their way around the country into the hands of the judges. What you see published here are the winners. All the excellent submissions by talented, creative students in college media were our privilege to see. Examining your best work has challenged us to get more creative with our own coverage.

Next year BOCD 17 will require .pdf submissions along with the printed versions of your best designs. The result will, we hope, give you the chance to show your work without the constraints of printing problems.

Last year, and for many years prior, Bob Adams of Western Kentucky University coordinated this contest and edited the book. Bob, thank you for making this contest great and for answering questions as they came up. CMA appreciates and values this generous gift of your time and talents.

Again, we want to thank our judges and our partners, Frank Myers and Taylor Publishing Company, for making The Best of Collegiate Design 16 a successful contest for CMA member publications.

Keep up the great work!

additional comments from judgesAdditional Judges Comments (see main pages for first place comments):

All Publications HEADLINE PRESENTATION Category 2

Second Place, Dane Van Oort, Tusk Magazine, California State University of Fullerton: “This has great contrast and high impact.” “Overlapping the type creates a feeling of confusion and chaos. Dynamic type treatment makes up for a mediocre photo.” “You can feel the tension within this presentation. The typography fits the tone of the story and draws you in.”

Third Place (tie), Kurt Soller, The Daily Northwestern, Northwestern University: “I love typewriters! I love rhyming headlines and I love clean, conceptual pages.” “Very clever and fun to look at.” “This concept is so smart. The execu-tion is clean, and I love the attention to detail.”

Third Place (tie), Wendy Muniz and Dani McNally, Distrac-tions Magazine, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida: “I like the movement of this illustration.” Beautiful composi-tion and creative use of a novelty font.” “This is wonderful. The typeface is a little hard to read, especially where it says ‘travel,’ but the overall impression makes up for that.”

All Publications ADVERTISEMENT Category 3

Second Place, Ashley Norton and Joanna Davila, IBIS 2007, University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida: “Nice execution of a tried-and-true idea. Great selection of the covers and cleanly organized.” “This is a tried-and-true concept – but the execution is well done and fits the mes-sage well. I’m ready to get my hands dirty.” “Keeping them all the same size really shows the versatility of the product. Scanning between each is fun for the eye.”

Third Place, ISD Staff, Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University: “Great play off the standard wrap-around ad. While board games can be a cliché, this execution is nice with a quick read.” “Visually, the ad held its space without compromising the news hole. Information provided in the ad is helpful on why to use CyRide.”

Honorable Mention, Robert K. Pietrzyk and Jen Quinn, The Spinnaker, The University of North Florida: “Great concept! Next time, work a bit longer on the type placement and finesse the type setting a bit. I love the hat. Nice touch.” “Loved the concept and the copywriting. The ad could be a winner with better typography – leading, tracking and placement. A better photo shoot, too. The guy doesn’t look like he’s chasing monsters.”

Newspapers FEATURE PAGE Category 5

Second Place – Ball State Daily News, Ball State Univer-sity. Designer: Nicole Stompor, Natiella Oglesby

The ambitious “Attack of the Zombies” page uses a staff illustration and a comic-book-style layout to explain a campuswide game. The rules are laid out in comic form as well – a more interesting and easier-to-comprehend presentation. This is a fun page that captures readers’ attention with an unconventional storytelling device. One thing that might improve the cover would be to put the zombie movie sidebar inside – it seems like it’s intruding on the comic-cover concept in its current placement.

Third Place – Ball State Daily News, Ball State University. Designer: Amy Duncan

Amy Duncan’s “Winter Shoes You Can Use” page is one of the top entries for its service to readers. In a piece that contains on the front page (thank you for not jumping!), the reporter outlines the best winter shoes in bite-size informa-tion. Most importantly, this presentation cuts to the chase for readers, telling them style, price and store in the big type above the “What to Look For” segment. It’s also nice that these shoes are affordable for students. Great content, great presentation.

Fourth Place– Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University. Designer: Patrick Crowley

An action-packed main photo was key to this “Railjammin’” page by Patrick Crowley. Colors in the headline play off the bright orange in the photo. The story contains to the front in a satisfying way, and pulling out club information and a Web refer to video content encourages the reader to delve deeper. Eliminating one of the two bottom photos could have helped create a clearer photo hierarchy, but overall,

the page still hangs together as a strong presentation.

Fifth Place – Technician, North Carolina State University. Designer: Tyler Dukes, William Alligood.

North Carolina State is an excellent source for information regarding barbecue, and this package by Tyler Dukes and William Alligood tells novices how a great cookout comes together. Readers can use this page to assemble their pig-cooking arsenal and to plan a whole day of cooking before the football season opener’s 6 p.m. kickoff. The icons are whimsical elements in the timeline, and the styling of the picnic table also shows a great deal of design forethought. Though the typography could be stronger with fewer contrasts in the headline and in the body copy, the multiple levels of visual storytelling make this a winning design entry.

Newspapers EDITORIAL-OPINION PAGE Category 6

Second Place, Martin Syjuco, el Don, Santa Ana College: “Great concept.” “Outrageous illustration grabs my atten-tion. It also benefits from quality of reproduction.” “The illustration definitely carries the page. It’s clever and so well executed that the embellishment headline type seems over the top. When you have great art, sometimes the best thing to do is get out of the way.”

Third Place, Matthew Cole, District, Savannah College of Art and Design: “This is the most sophisticated entry. I hope it’s not just a template.” “Love the Euro-inspired style.” “Hands down, this has the best typography. Very professional looking.”

Honorable Mention, Breanna Huff, Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska-Lincoln: “Good use of double-truck.” “Scale is a way to grab attention – it worked on me.” “Watch the type! The main headline needs to be tracked in, and there is no need for the body copy in the main story to be so much bigger than the rest of the page. Overall, nice packaging of the stories and a beautiful illustration.”

Newspapers SPORTS PAGE Category 7

First Place – Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska. Designer, Lauren Case: Of all the pages in this category, Lauren Case’s “That’s so Maric” design was far and away the most sophisticated. Sports is a section that likes to yell, so it was a pleasant surprise to see something that spoke softly, but still carried the same power. The typography is elegant, and the black-and-white photos create a magazine feel. In fact, this work would be at home in the big-time, professional sports magazines – lucky for the Daily Nebras-kan, Lauren Case works for them instead (for now).

Second Place – The State News, Michigan State Uni-versity. Designer, Chad Powell: Strong typography and visuals in this centerpiece by Chad Powell. The main image interacts with the headline, and Powell has made very good color choices. He keeps the rest of the page simple to let the main component shine. He also does readers a favor by keeping the article contained to the front. The quick-hit format for best and worst is much more effective than a 20-inch, jumping story.

Third Place – The Shorthorn, University of Texas at Arlington. Designer, Daniel Johnson: Daniel Johnson makes good use of primo newspaper real estate with his Mavericks doubletruck. Photos are played well and show a clear hierarchy on the page, though editing one or two out might have made that feature stronger. Another visual hook is the bold lead-in on the captions. This technique makes it feel like it could be a standalone photo package – I was a little surprised to note that the images share this space with an itty bitty jump. The addition of a deck head also helps orient readers, especially those who might start at this page before seeing the accompanying article. The Game-by-Game Rundown at right is another compelling feature, but could have used tighter crops on the images.

Fourth Place – Cardinal Points, Plattsburgh State. Design-er, Ryan Hayner: This page by Ryan Hayner accomplishes a goal every designer should have: Make people want to save your page forever! This bold wrap-around cover, with a victorious hockey player holding her trophy aloft, has a poster quality that connects with readers on an emotional level. I can imagine it tacked to dorm room walls and taped inside windows. A fantastic photo, played as big as the page allows, makes for a smartly designed souvenir.

Fifth Place – Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University. Designer, Mattie Fraser: I was drawn in by Mattie Fraser’s typography on this page about two sisters who are both on the IU Cycledelics team. This is a well-composed photo, and I like her “framing” treatment, too, which prepares the reader for a feature profile rather than a game story. One area for improvement would be the deck: It’s too leaded out and too large for the page.

Newspapers PHOTO PAGE/SPREAD Category 8

“Good design, like everything else in the newsroom, is based in good journalism – content is king! The writing, photography and graphics must be edited for content first, then impact and design. Most of the photo pages used entirely too many pictures and tried to shoe horn them onto the page. Fewer pictures and better photo editing would have helped almost every photo entry. Everything seemed too crowded and hard to read. Remember that white space is your friend. It gives the reader room to view the pictures and not feel crowded and rushed. Seen in the winners are good page designs made easier with the right number of good pictures, with both design and pictures working together to tell the story.”

Second Place- F Newsmagazine – Javier Lopez “Ecuador – A view of migration:” This is a clean design, excellent concept and execution. It was well thought out and carried off.

Third Place- The Rocky Mountain Collegion – Hailey McDonald, Tanner Bennett “Mind, Body and Soul:” This has a clean evocative design that leaves the viewer wanting to see more.

Fourth Place - The Southwestern College Sun – Mariana Ricalde “Mariachi erases Borders:” This is a fun, light story, pictures and design that fully gave the sense of what mariachi is.

Fifth Place - The Rocky Mountain Collegian – Hailey McDonald “Freddy Robinson’s journey to the NBA:” Solid pictures, but the design is stiff and expected with no surprises. This could have been helped with a tighter edit on the photos.

Newspapers NAMEPLATE/STANDING HEADS Category 9

Second Place – Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University. Designer, Megan Steenson: Iowa State’s nameplate is a strong entry because of its clarity. The typography was crisp, the refer and weather information are well organized, and the splash of color in the ISD logo to the left is also found in the paper’s Web refers. That final element is a useful navigation tool for readers. Two things could be stronger: The chevrons in the text under the flag would benefit from bolding – or maybe they could come out? Also, the TM and the R by the paper’s name and logo are distracting. Why do they need to be there?

Third Place – The Ball State Daily News, Ball State University. Designers, Ali Newton, Sarah Crone, Jessica Maglinger: Ball State’s nameplate has clean, elegant typography and gets the nuts-and-bolts information in there in an unobtrusive way. It also has a lot of flexibility in how it positions its refers to stories inside. In doing so, though, designers must keep an eye out for legibility and clarity. One of the entries was hard to read because of the splashy refer underneath it.

Fourth Place – The Northern Light, University of Alaska, Anchorage. Designer, Aaron Burkhart: This entry is very strong typographically. Color is well used, and the size is right for the tabloid publication. I also like the “n” logo at left. I hope this publication will consider repeating it through its pages, perhaps in the form of Web refers, like the Iowa State Daily does.

Fifth Place – El Don, Santa Ana College. Designer, Staff: The typography in the El Don nameplate drew my eye immediately. I like the contrasts created by the different weights and case in the school name. The well-organized refers and the single image of the baseball player add to the elegance and avoid cluttering the page.

Newspapers FRONT PAGE DESIGN Category 10

Second Place, Larry Buchanan, Indiana Daily Student, In-diana University: “A teeny bit too much red. A complimen-tary color would have helped the page sing.” “This page

Page 69: cma officers · cma officers Ken Rosenauer President Missouri Western State University Vince Filak Vice President University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Laura York Guy ... Omar Sofradzija

68 2008 the best of collegiate design 16

showed excellent layering of information. The question lead headline trips it up a bit. Also, the quote in the middle of the page with red rules was just too much. The page needed slightly better editing.” “Excellent layering of information. Nice use of color palette. Overall design is clean and unclut-tered.” “Lots of layering, but the number of kickers and lines in red can be a bit too much.”

Third Place, Ali Newton, Ball State Daily News, Ball State University: “Nice photo play.” “Pulling down the rail and playing the story six columns makes a big impact, visually. Headline works well with the photo.”

Honorable Mention, Jose Serrano and Martin Syjuco, el Don, Santa Ana College: “Photo selection and cropping is visually striking. Overall clean page design, no extra and unneeded elements.” “I would have loved to have seen a bit more info-layering in the main package. For example, a little map would have been a great service and the mug shot isn’t necessary.” “Main photo is beautiful. Playing it large really brings out all its details. But mug shot seems very redundant.”

Honorable Mention, Jay Carlson, Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska-Lincoln: “Nice composition with a 3-story related front. All the rules get a little heavy though.” “This would have been a great opportunity to reverse the flag.” “This page earned a mention for is use of typography. Downpage, it could have been more successful with better separation of the headline from the nameplate and bolder use of the photography.”

Special Sections, supplements or other publications COVER Category 11

Second Place – The Ball State Daily News, Ball State University. Designer, Jessica Maglinger: This is a strong Halloween Guide cover with multiple entry points for readers. The large image of the greenish girl (ghoul?) is arresting. The drinks and recipes would be valuable to Halloween par-tyers. The poll has a unique presentation, using the candy wrappers as slices of the pie. One quibble: It’s not immedi-ately obvious whom the paper polled. Jessica Maglinger also took a risk with the reverse type – one that paid off, thanks to the good color registration.

Third Place – The Daily, University of Washington. Design-ers, Leisha Muraki, Colleen Kirsten: This March Madness page from Leisha Muraki and Colleen Kirsten has one clear and clever concept. It makes excellent use of color and integration of the geometric shapes found on the basketball court. Good photo illustration of the shoe with a spur at-tached to conjure an association with San Antonio. And a deft use of the novelty “Western” type for the headline … it’s so easy to overuse or abuse these “fun” fonts, and The Daily avoided those traps. Would have liked to see a closer pairing of headline and illo – maybe a play on “spur?” Spurred to greatness? It always elevates design when the display type and the main illo support each other more clearly.

Fourth Place – The Daily Northwestern, Northwestern University. Designer, Modesta Zapata: Designer Modesta Zapata earns a place here for recognizing an excellent photo and then getting out of its way. The image is intriguing, es-pecially with the tight crop on the couple, The small display type at the bottom whispers rather than shouts, echoing the “private” moment above. Could have used similarly small, unobtrusive refers to content inside to add a reader service.

Magazines COVER Category 12

Second Place - LSU “The Sex Issue:” Beautiful photograph and concept. The cherry with a knot in it is something the reader would recognize as “sexy,” while not being so literal. The image serves as a striking, unconventional and nostalgic symbol of sex. The placement of type is simple and doesn’t get in the way of the main image.

Magazines CONTENTS PAGE/SPREAD Category 13

Second Place - Coastal Carolina University, Rob Byrd: Treating each image like a matted, framed piece of art on a gallery wall was intriguing and a great way to keep the page clean, yet maintain a hierarchy of photos. The different sizes of the frames and the photos keep the layout interesting, and it is apparent the composition of each image was considered in the arrangement.

Magazines FEATURE SPREAD Category 14

Second Place - Indiana University “Lust”: The flat graphic images and the black-and-pink color scheme make this page a lot of fun. The minimal wrapping of the text keep the page clean, and the slight wave applied to the definition of lust brings your eye across the spread. The contrast of the curves and the straight lines adds interest to the composi-tion.

Yearbooks COVER Category 15

Second Place - Indiana University: Interesting use of type and nice color scheme. Simple and bold. While a jumbled layout like this can look distracting, the use of flat graphic colors against a flat background – all from the warm side of the color wheel – make the cover attractive.

Yearbooks DIVISION PAGE Category 16

Second Place - N.W. Missouri State University “Greeks”: The color scheme, the active photo and the use of brackets make this spread pop. The orange sans serif type is balance out by the strong photo. The use of small, black serif type for the cutlines effectively keeps the cutlines muted and maintains the focus on the dominant image and main text.

Yearbooks STUDENT LIFE Category 17

Second Place - N.Carolina State University “Krispy Kreme Challenge”: FUN! Very interesting subject matter and domi-nant photo! The fact box is interesting and the donut adds some, but not too much, interest to the muted background.

Yearbooks ACADEMIC SPREAD Category 18

Second Place - University of Tennessee “Holub’s New Deal”: The color scheme and the black- and-white photos make this spread. The fonts are clean and the layout is intriguing and balanced. And the simple composition fits the subject matter.

Yearbooks SPORTS SPREAD Category 19

Second Place - University of Tennessee (Doubltruck photo of Volunteers football team): Great photo. Minimal text is a great way to let a good photo tell the story.

Yearbooks INDIVIDUAL SPREAD Category 20

Second Place - University of Oklahoma “The Many Faces of Clarke”: Interesting concept. The hint of color highlighting the various bow ties worn by the black-and-white subject really draws the reader in. Large white frames and subtle shadows set nicely against the flat black background. Nice use of breakout information separated by use of line and text hierarchy.

Second Place - University of Oklahoma “A House to Call Home”: Bold color scheme fits content. Cutouts well executed – nice and tight. The use of white on the right balances the candy colors of the rest of the package. Spread nicely uses the tabs consistent throughout the rest of the yearbook. The emotion in the dominant image is inviting and tells the story.

Online newspapers MAIN PAGE PRESENTATION Category 22

Second Place, The Kaleidoscope, www.uabkscope.com: The Kaleidoscope benefits from one of the cleanest navigation systems and offers a clean page grid with no fluff. The page is easy to scan.

Recommendations: One of the best things we can do in the online news space is take advantage of all the multimedia oppoprtunities. Every news story we do should be thought about as a mini package. What related content can be associated with a story? Video, podcasts, photos, other stories, etc. The “Inside UABKscope.com” section could be freshened up by including a thumbnail and short blurb for the top story in each section.

Third Place, The Indiana Daily Student, IDSNews.com: The Indiana Daily Student could easily be a winner next year. They are doing some great stuff. Everyone should take note of the way they package stories with video, blogs and photos.

Recommendations: I’d like to see the left side navigation cleaned up. Can all search boxes be combined into one

search at the top of the page? Can all navigation be moved to top of page? Monetization is important for most online papers these days. We have to find good ways of designing advertising into the page grid without destroying the ability to scan the page (see middle of design).

Fourth Place, www.CrusaderNews.com: A clan design paired with a classic page grid makes for a very usable online news front. Page is easy to scan.

Recommendations: The duplicate left side navigation is con-fusing. The pill-shaped bullets don’t add much. In fact, they hurt usability if they are not clickable. Use color to define the link or a standard bullet plus color. Page would benefit from less gray.

Fifth Place, The Standard Online: This front was one of my favorites but the navigation is very confusing. I’d love to see better use of white space. Story blurbs are just a tad long. Look for ways to package content together.

Recommendations: Site navigation does not look clear and concise. What are Sections and Options? What is the difference between Interactive and Multimedia? We should never rely on the customer clicking something to find out. A revised nav system would make this design begin to stand out. Shortening story blurbs and looking for ways to package site content together would be a big win. Creating a template that allowed a photo and story to run two columns would be nice to have.

Other Online Publications MAIN PAGE PRESENTATION Category 23

Second Place, Buzz magazine, www.the217.com: This site has a lot of nice things going for it. It has a nice page grid and sections are clearly defined. Nice use of blogging.

Recommendations: The main navigation is borderline confusing with two rows. If double nav is necessary look for some alternative ways of making it more visually defined. The accordion centerpiece design is distracting. Simply rotat-ing through stories and giving next/previous controls would be fine. Love the playlist area. Can this be redesigned to better incorporate the album art? Run the times horizontally across the top and put text under each album cover.

Third Place, Heartland view, www.heartlandview.com: This design is easy to scan and content is well defined though I’d suggest reworking the page grid to maximize space (see middle bottom of page).

Recommendations: Create a two column features section below the centerpiece and fill that with four stories or two stories and two features. Centerpiece area should link to related stores. Can navigation be placed in one location of page?

Fourth Place, Ibis yearbook, www.miami.edu/ibis: The ibis design is one of the cleanest design examples in the category but there are a couple of improvements that would make this really stand out.

Recommendations: Place left side navigation under the masthead. The design itself feels more like a blog, which is okay if this is a blog but the content on the site doesn’t fit that format. I’d like to see a page design that allowed for a bit more flexibility in layout. The Announcements section looks a lot like a text ad and I think this is due to the gray background.

Fifth Place, Aura Literary Arts Review, www.uab.edu/aura: I want to see more. The page is begging to see writer pics and some of the featured writing. I know we run the risk of cannibalizing the printed book but there’s room to share. How about having a section for pieces that didn’t make the printed book? Allow web users to read and vote for some pieces? I’d think having a synopsis of some pieces on the web would be okay, too.

Recommendations: Create a page grid that showcases the writers and their work. Link to bios and other works that may have been published in previous Aura books. Possible section for readers to vote for their favorite pieces during the year for inclusion in the printed book.
