In 1844 the Methodist Church was split on the issue of slavery with the Northern states against slavery and the Southern states for it.
The blacks wanted autonomy and the whites wanted blacks to leave.
As a result the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1866 at their General Conference honored the petitions of the blacks to withdraw.
