Successful completion of this CME activity (the Alaska Chapter Scienti�c Meeting), which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 17 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certi�cation (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

The Alaska Osteopathic Medical Association (AKOMA) isaccredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. AKOMA designates this program for a maximum of 19 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Pre-Course: ABIM SEP Module Learning Session Notes:“2017-18 Update in Hospital Medicine”

The SEP Module fee is in addition to the conference registration fee and only applies to those seeking ABIM MOC points. All attendees are welcome to attend and are eligible for CME credit.

The Alaska Chapter will provide you with a learner’s copy of the ABIM module at the meeting. Participants who are enrolled in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certi�cation program can download a copy of the 2017-18 Update in Hospital Medicine from ABIM’s website, www.abim.org , and transfer and submit the answers discussed during the Learning Session to ABIM for scoring. Participants will have access to a score report that con�rms whether or not the module was completed successfully. Those who complete the module successfully will receive 10 MOC points for completing a 30-question module toward ABIM’s Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge requirement for Maintenance of Certi�cation. You must be enrolled in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certi�cation program to submit completed medical knowledge modules for scoring, feedback reports, and eligibility to receive Maintenance of Certi�cation points.

Anne Alaniz, DO

DR. ALANIZ is a Gynecologic Oncologist working for Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was born in Malawi,

Africa and came to the US in 1994. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Dallas Baptist University in Dallas Texas. She earned her D.O. degree in 2004 from University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. She then went on to complete her OBGYN residency program at University of Missouri in Kansas City and then a Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. Dr. Alaniz is the co- founder of

Pothawira (Safe Haven), an organization in Salima, Malawi that has an outpatient clinic, a new birthing center, a school, and a home-style orphanage.

Micah Beachy, DO, FACP

DR. BEACHY is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Nebraska Medicine-University of Nebraska Medical Center

(UNMC). He attended Des Moines University-College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school and completed his residency at UNMC. He is a hospitalist and works closely with the Internal Medicine residency program. In addition, he is actively involved with the co-management service seeing orthopedic patients both for preoperative evaluation and postoperative co-management. Dr. Beachy has also been active with ACP since 2009 serving in a variety of roles at both the chapter and

national level. In 2015, he was a part of the inaugural ACP Wellness Champions training and now serves on the Wellness Taskforce.

Andrew Butki, DO

DR. BUTKI practices emergency medicine in Soldotna, Alaska. He graduated with honors from Michigan State University College of

Osteopathic Medicine in 2010. Having more than 7 years of diverse experience, Dr. Butki is a�liated with Central Peninsula General Hospital, and cooperates with other doctors and specialists in many medical groups including St John Hospital And Medical Center, Central Peninsula General Hospital Inc.

Seth Cohen, MD, MSc

DR. COHEN received his Master of Science in epidemiology from the University of Washington, and his medical degree from Emory

University. Dr. Cohen completed his residency, and served as chief resident at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by infectious disease fellowship at UW. He currently works as the associate medical director of infection control at Northwest hospital in Seattle and attends at UW on the oncology infectious disease service where he specializes in caring for patients who may have compromised immune systems due to cancer, chemotherapy or stem cell transplant.

Robert B. Doherty

MR. DOHERTY is Senior Vice President of Governmental A�airs and Public Policy for the American College of Physicians (ACP). Mr.

Doherty has more than 37 years of health policy experience and is an accomplished presenter at health conferences. From 1979 to 1998, Mr. Doherty worked in the governmental a�airs department of the American Society of Internal Medicine, and with the merger of ASIM and ACP in June 1998, joined the ACP as Senior Vice President for Governmental A�airs and Public Policy. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of URAC, a leading health care accreditation organization and on the Steering Committee for Stand for Quality.

William Elliott, MD, PhD

DR. ELLIOTT is Professor of Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacology, Chief of the Division of Pharmacology, and

Chair of The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Paci�c Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, WA. After receiving the B.S. (summa cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame, he earned the M.D. and Ph.D. (in Bio-Organic Chemistry) from the University of Chicago. He trained in Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at Barnes Hospital and Washington University—St. Louis, and served as a member of the faculty of the University of Chicago from 1985-92.

During the next 17 years at RUSH Medical College, he practiced, taught and did research on cardiovascular clinical pharmacology, serving as principal investigator for about 200 clinical trials of new drugs. Dr. Elliott holds Board Certi�cation in both Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology.

Christopher Knight, MD, FACP

DR. KNIGHT is a primary care internist who teaches and sees patients at the University of Washington. His training path took

him from his home in Alaska to New York City for an undergraduate degree in history, from which he returned to Seattle for medical school and residency in internal medicine. After serving additional time as chief resident for ambulatory care, he joined the faculty in 2000. From there he's tried to make a job out of the things he enjoys: teaching medical students and residents, seeing patients, working with community physicians, and translating new medical literature

into meaningful recommendations for practice. He is now an associate professor of medicine, associate director for both the internal medicine student clerkship and residency program, and director of WWAMI regional teaching programs for the Department of Medicine.

Anne M. Larson, MD

DR. LARSON is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. Following receipt of a medical

degree, with honors, from the UW School of Medicine in Seattle, Dr. Larson completed her residency in internal medicine at UW. She also completed a clinical fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, San Diego, and a senior research fellowship in transplant hepatology at UW. Dr. Larson is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, with board-certi�cation in both gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. She is a Fellow of the

American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Jonathan R. McDonagh, MD, FACP, FACC

DR. MCDONAGH grew up near Boston, Massachusetts and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from

Middlebury College in Vermont and then completed his Doctor of Medicine from The University of Vermont in 2001. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine in 2005 at the University of Washington in Seattle where he served as Chief Medical Resident at Harborview Medical Center. In 2011, Dr. McDonagh completed two fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at the University of Michigan. In 2015, Dr. McDonagh

joined the Alaska Heart and Vascular Institute as an interventional cardiologist. He is currently on sta� and treats patients at Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Regional Medical Center, Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, Alaska Native Medical Center and Central Peninsula Hospital.

Gail Pokorney, MD, FACP

DR. POKORNEY is a general internist who completed her primary care residency at UCSF in 2013. She has been practicing at

Peninsula Internal Medicine in Soldotna and works occasional night shifts for The Alaska Hospitalist Group. She teaches University of Washington 3rd-year medical students in the WWAMI program and is part of the team working to develop an internal medicine residency track here in Alaska. She is an active member of both the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians and became a Fellow of the ACP last year.

DR. SHOWALTER serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Associate Professor and Chief for Women’s Health at Paci�c

Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, Washington. A graduate of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, she completed OB/GYN residency at Cuyahoga Falls Community Hospital, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and the Board of Trustees of the Yakima County Medical Society as well as serving on numerous national and state committees and task forces. It is her

passion to teach sensitive care of women and the pro�cient use of osteopathic principles.

Joshua Sonkiss, MD

DR. SONKISS is board-certi�ed in adult, adolescent and forensic psychiatry. He completed undergraduate training at the

University of Alaska, attended medical school at McGill University, and completed residency at the University of Utah. After his forensic training at the University of Rochester, he returned to Alaska where he has provided psychiatric and addiction treatment in inpatient, residential and outpatient settings as well as in some of the state’s most remote communities. He is Chief Medical O�cer of Anchorage Community Mental Health Services.

Micah Beachy, DO, FACP

DR. BEACHY is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Nebraska Medicine-University of Nebraska Medical Center

(UNMC). He attended Des Moines University-College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school and completed his residency at UNMC. He is a hospitalist and works closely with the Internal Medicine residency program. In addition, he is actively involved with the co-management service seeing orthopedic patients both for preoperative evaluation and postoperative co-management. Dr. Beachy has also been active with ACP since 2009 serving in a variety of roles at both the chapter and

national level. In 2015, he was a part of the inaugural ACP Wellness Champions training and now serves on the Wellness Taskforce.

Andrew Butki, DO

DR. BUTKI practices emergency medicine in Soldotna, Alaska. He graduated with honors from Michigan State University College of

Osteopathic Medicine in 2010. Having more than 7 years of diverse experience, Dr. Butki is a�liated with Central Peninsula General Hospital, and cooperates with other doctors and specialists in many medical groups including St John Hospital And Medical Center, Central Peninsula General Hospital Inc.

Seth Cohen, MD, MSc

DR. COHEN received his Master of Science in epidemiology from the University of Washington, and his medical degree from Emory

University. Dr. Cohen completed his residency, and served as chief resident at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by infectious disease fellowship at UW. He currently works as the associate medical director of infection control at Northwest hospital in Seattle and attends at UW on the oncology infectious disease service where he specializes in caring for patients who may have compromised immune systems due to cancer, chemotherapy or stem cell transplant.

Robert B. Doherty

MR. DOHERTY is Senior Vice President of Governmental A�airs and Public Policy for the American College of Physicians (ACP). Mr.

Doherty has more than 37 years of health policy experience and is an accomplished presenter at health conferences. From 1979 to 1998, Mr. Doherty worked in the governmental a�airs department of the American Society of Internal Medicine, and with the merger of ASIM and ACP in June 1998, joined the ACP as Senior Vice President for Governmental A�airs and Public Policy. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of URAC, a leading health care accreditation organization and on the Steering Committee for Stand for Quality.

William Elliott, MD, PhD

DR. ELLIOTT is Professor of Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacology, Chief of the Division of Pharmacology, and

Chair of The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Paci�c Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, WA. After receiving the B.S. (summa cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame, he earned the M.D. and Ph.D. (in Bio-Organic Chemistry) from the University of Chicago. He trained in Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at Barnes Hospital and Washington University—St. Louis, and served as a member of the faculty of the University of Chicago from 1985-92.

During the next 17 years at RUSH Medical College, he practiced, taught and did research on cardiovascular clinical pharmacology, serving as principal investigator for about 200 clinical trials of new drugs. Dr. Elliott holds Board Certi�cation in both Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology.

Christopher Knight, MD, FACP

DR. KNIGHT is a primary care internist who teaches and sees patients at the University of Washington. His training path took

him from his home in Alaska to New York City for an undergraduate degree in history, from which he returned to Seattle for medical school and residency in internal medicine. After serving additional time as chief resident for ambulatory care, he joined the faculty in 2000. From there he's tried to make a job out of the things he enjoys: teaching medical students and residents, seeing patients, working with community physicians, and translating new medical literature

into meaningful recommendations for practice. He is now an associate professor of medicine, associate director for both the internal medicine student clerkship and residency program, and director of WWAMI regional teaching programs for the Department of Medicine.

Anne M. Larson, MD

DR. LARSON is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. Following receipt of a medical

degree, with honors, from the UW School of Medicine in Seattle, Dr. Larson completed her residency in internal medicine at UW. She also completed a clinical fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California, San Diego, and a senior research fellowship in transplant hepatology at UW. Dr. Larson is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, with board-certi�cation in both gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. She is a Fellow of the

American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Jonathan R. McDonagh, MD, FACP, FACC

DR. MCDONAGH grew up near Boston, Massachusetts and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from

Middlebury College in Vermont and then completed his Doctor of Medicine from The University of Vermont in 2001. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine in 2005 at the University of Washington in Seattle where he served as Chief Medical Resident at Harborview Medical Center. In 2011, Dr. McDonagh completed two fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at the University of Michigan. In 2015, Dr. McDonagh

joined the Alaska Heart and Vascular Institute as an interventional cardiologist. He is currently on sta� and treats patients at Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Regional Medical Center, Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, Alaska Native Medical Center and Central Peninsula Hospital.

Gail Pokorney, MD, FACP

DR. POKORNEY is a general internist who completed her primary care residency at UCSF in 2013. She has been practicing at

Peninsula Internal Medicine in Soldotna and works occasional night shifts for The Alaska Hospitalist Group. She teaches University of Washington 3rd-year medical students in the WWAMI program and is part of the team working to develop an internal medicine residency track here in Alaska. She is an active member of both the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians and became a Fellow of the ACP last year.

Anita Showalter, DO, FACOOG

DR. SHOWALTER serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Associate Professor and Chief for Women’s Health at Paci�c

Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima, Washington. A graduate of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, she completed OB/GYN residency at Cuyahoga Falls Community Hospital, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and the Board of Trustees of the Yakima County Medical Society as well as serving on numerous national and state committees and task forces. It is her

passion to teach sensitive care of women and the pro�cient use of osteopathic principles.

Joshua Sonkiss, MD

DR. SONKISS is board-certi�ed in adult, adolescent and forensic psychiatry. He completed undergraduate training at the

University of Alaska, attended medical school at McGill University, and completed residency at the University of Utah. After his forensic training at the University of Rochester, he returned to Alaska where he has provided psychiatric and addiction treatment in inpatient, residential and outpatient settings as well as in some of the state’s most remote communities. He is Chief Medical O�cer of Anchorage Community Mental Health Services.
