Last month I wasat the Counting Crows show at PierSix Pavillion and plan on makingit to a few more this season. Theyhave an incredible line-up and theplace is such a cool venue. Getthere early and try to find streetparking because the parkinggarages will hit you up for $20.00!Timing and planning is all that’s needed to save on thisexpense. CMG will then be back at Sandy Point State Parkfor the Maryland Seafood Festival on September 10, 11 &12th. The Seafood Fest not only offers some of the best seafooddishes but the finest live music in the area as well. Jimmie’sChicken Shack, The Reagan Years and Kelly Bell Band, justto name a few, are at this year’s festival. Check their websitefor the complete schedule of entertainment and otheractivities, www.mdseafoodfestival.com. Speaking of seafoodfestivals, The Rockfish will host their 3rd Annual Seafood Feston Sunday, August 29th. Where else can you hear sevenbands for seven bucks? Bands like Maybe Not Even, Skribe,Michael Butler’s Trio and others are scheduled to play. It allstarts at noon at the Rockfish in Eastport. They will be servingup great food including crabs and hamburgers. There is amoonbounce for the kids and it’s all for a good cause, ourbeloved Chesapeake Bay! Looking forward to seeing you atsome of these great shows. Becky
LYLE LOVETT AND HIS LARGE BAND PLAY THE 18TH ANNUAL
HOT AUGUST BLUES & ROOTS FESTIVAL
For almost two decades Hot August Blues & Roots Festivalhas brought the best in blues, roots and Americana music toBaltimore, making it a Mid-Atlantic favorite among musiclovers of all ages. Now celebrating its 18th year, the traditioncontinues as Lyle Lovett and his Large Band headline theshow scheduled for Saturday, August 21 at Oregon RidgePark in Cockeysville, MD.
Four-time Grammy Award-winner, LYLE LOVETT is certain todelight festival goers as he leads his Large Band through avaried repertoire of big band, blues, western swing, folk, jazz, country, and gospel, including tunes found on his latest release,Force of Nature (Curb/Lost Highway). Lovett is a generousperformer, giving concert-goers their money’s worth withlengthy sets replete with humorous and engaging banter. It’sthese shows that have, in part, endeared him to fans across allgenres and raised Lovett to almost cult-like status. The HoustonMusic Review sums it up best, “If you’re not a Lyleist by nowyou will be after seeing one of his live shows.”
Beloved bluesman KEB’ MO’ will charm audience memberswith his captivating brand of storytelling through song. His isa compelling cross-genre blend of Delta blues mixed withfolk, country and rock, delivered with distinctive andexpressive vocals. Most recently you may have noticed Keb’sappearance in the viral video sensation, One Love (Play for aChange) as seen on YouTube. He also has a new CD, Live &Mo’ on his privately owned Yolabelle International label.
Expect BLACK JOE LEWIS & the Honeybears to wow the crowdwith their unique brand of high-intensity, horn-fueled soul. The Austin, TX- based outfit has been busy touring in supportof their release, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is! (Lost Highway),
which garnered an impressive #3 spot on David Dye’s Top10 Albums for 2009 (WXPN/The World Café). It’s Lewis’no-holds-barred delivery that draws comparisons to OtisRedding and Wilson Pickett with the LA Times proclaiming,“Forget neo-soul — this is “Yeow! soul.”
Energized from a busy summer tour including appearancesat Bonnaroo and The All Good Festival, Baltimore’s ownTHE BRIDGE make their debut appearance at Hot August. Theband’s cult-like following is far reaching thanks to theirpopular release, Blind Man’s Hill (Hyena Records). All AboutJazz.com sums them up best when they write, “More soulfuland funky than many in its genre, the band writes gutsy yetmelodic songs infused with a Southern, red-clay spirit thatfills the slot between the grinding, blues-based NorthMississippi All Stars, the New Orleans R&B tinge of the
Radiators and Little Feat’sgruff, expressive groove.”
If you’re thinking ofshowing up late, thinkagain. You won’t want tomiss local blues belterJackie Scott & theHousewreckers , whomade the Baltimore BluesSociety proud when theyrepresented the tri-statearea at this year’s 26th
Annual InternationalBlues Challenge inMemphis, TN.
WTMD’s John Mathewswill emcee the event, with
additional performers scheduled including the ever-popularteam of stilt walkers. And you’ll once again find localbluesman Choo Choo Charlie Williams hosting a harmonicaworkshop at the the Kids Korner. More food and beveragevendors have been added and ample free parking will beprovided.
With last year’s attendance far exceeding expectations, event organizer Brad Selko is gearing up for another stellarturnout. “Every year we strive to improve,” notes Selko “andthis year is no exception. We’re ready for the 18th AnnualHot August Blues & Roots Festival and hope you are too.”
Funds raised benefit Common Ground On the Hill, theBaltimore Blues Society, and Marcia’s Kids Endowment forthe Arts.

History of The NoWhere MenThe Washington Metropolitan area for years has been notorious for its musi-cal talents. The area became a melting pot for all genres. There wasn’t a nightclub around that didn’t offer live entertainment and hosted big name artistsfrom afar as well as its strong local talents. Depending on your taste in music,be it pop, rhythm & blues or soul you were able to find it all and within a closeproximity of one another. Having this exposure any night of the week hasprovided us all with enjoyable memories. So start toe tapping your way back tothe 60’s.The NoWhere Men were formed in the early 1960's. They were young menwho got together from different parts of the Washington Metropolitan Areaand they were not even old enough to drive. Supportive parents and oldersiblings would witness the music they made coming from their basements andgarages and offered to drive them to their performances. The NoWhere Menbecame one of the hottest and funkiest groups ever to hit the D.C. music sceneproviding blue-eyed soul with rich harmonies unsurpassed in the area. Theircover tunes encompassed a wide array of music popular at the time to includeBlood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago, The Ides of March, The Temptations, FourTops, Parliament, Sam & Dave, James Brown, Tom Jones, Clarence Carter, aswell as rich melodic groups and performers like The 5th Dimension, Gary Puckettand the Union Gap, The Grass Roots, The Associations, Bill Deal & TheRhondells, Guess Who, Righteous Brothers, etc. to name just a few.

Artist: Pressing Strings • Album: Episodes • Label: Self-releasedWebsite: www.pressingstrings.com • By Travis Mamone
For the past couple of years, the boys of Pressing Strings have been creating abuzz around the Annapolis area. If you want to know why they’ve got people
talking, take a listen to their second album Episodes. The voices of Jordan Sokel and Joshua Kachuracompliment each other, while their laid-back bluesguitar groove makes it impossible to sit in your chairwithout at least tapping your toes. Add in BobNovak on drums and percussion, and you’ve gotyourself one tight band. The disc begins with the bluesy rocker “Power
Chair,” followed by the laid-back Jack Johnson-style“This Book” (in fact, Kachura kind of sounds likeJohnson). “Radio” is a call to individuality and
personal freedom. “Radio, let the people play,” Sokel sings, “and do what theywant, what they want to say/ oh now the time is right/ burn the day and wecan light the light tonight.” “Drift” is a twenty-second instrumental that leadsinto the catchy single “Carousel,” which many readers may have heard onWRNR. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing “Da-um da-um dah-oh” along with Sokel.Things mellow out a bit for the title track, but then then the tempo picks up
during “A Letter From Mrs. Boothby.” The latter features Junior Marvin onelectric 12-string guitar, and an Afro-Cuban rhythm that Vampire Weekendwould definitely approve of. “The Unlike” is a mellow number with a countrytwang (thanks to Sokel on slide guitar) and a promise that both bright daysand dark days are coming. “Choo Choo Blues” is a country-style instrumentalthat will make you think of sweet tea and front porches. The album ends withthe funky “Puerto Rico.” The song will make you think of drinking margaritasby the seashore. When the boys sing “Take a trip with me,” your first thoughtwill be, “When do we go?”Whether you’re a Pressing Strings fan, or you want to know what the fuss is
about, Episodes will not disappoint you. Expect the band to have a brightfuture ahead.Artist: Charles “Big Daddy” Stallings • Title: Blues Party • Label:
Tai Jeria Record Co. • Website: bigdaddystallings.comby James Nash
From the down home North Carolina welcome and witty “political approval”intro, a “Blues Party” is what we are invited to, and a blues party we are going
to get. Harmonica from Mark Wenner, local long-time master, opens this set andappears elsewhere, also some harp fromSteve Levine on this first (and one other)tune. The horns, courtesy of Joe “E Flat”Thomas and Clarence Ward III, arearranged throughout by Mr. Stallings andMr. Thomas.“Horny Bee” (no misspelling) has the pure
feel and not-so-entendre of MuddyWaters. Big Daddy’s calls of “sting, sting, sting” can’t help but bring a smile to anyblues lover—or any lover for that matter.“Fine Lady” has horn accents that trumpetand stride blues power. Just when your
ears have settled into the groove, Mr. Stallings has the mastery to throw ahesitation time change at you. Nice horn coda, too.“Down on the Farm” is as authentic as it gets, with Mr. Wenner’s harp and
Mr. Stallings’ lyrics like “Grew up next to a cotton field/And the boll weevil’scall me by my first name,” and yells to his plow puller to “git up thar mule.”“Swing 2010” does, with big band panache and maybe Gail Parrish’s finest
bass work. She does her best James Jamerson, ubiquitous yet humble on nearlyevery song, adding nothing but steady bottom to this party. If you can sit stillduring this tune, there’s something wrong with you. “She’s Gone” jumps rightout of the speakers (like several songs here) and has some nice tonal guitarwork by Big Daddy, searing yet understated, if that’s possible. With its ear-catching music and deep lyric intro, “Keep them bloomers on Granny/Grandpaain’t givin’up no love tonight,” “Old Folks” gets and keeps your attention. Theclock ticking plays with the lyrics, which play with the fun theme, musicaltime taking on temporal time.“In Love By Yourself” brings to mind Jerry Butler or the Delfonics, with the
vocal tone, spoken bridge, and faux string background. About two thirds ofthe way through the party, Big Daddy does another intro to feature the sax ofCarlos Johnson. Then Jacky Harriston’s Hammond plies the Leslie middlethird of “The Lucky Number.” Just when you think Mr. Stallings worked outall his blues, he pulls out his funky tribute to the late, great J.B., “James.” ThenMilvea Hernandez provides some appropriate vocal percussion and “Latinaliciousness” in a call and response during “Latin Girls.”“Blues In Your Funk” ends this generously extra-long set by the talented Mr.
Stallings and many musical friends. Russell Hayward II’s drums nailed downthe beat for nearly every song. Bill Pratt of the Bratt Studio recorded, mixed, engineered, and mastered the CD (and he also played some drums, rhythmguitar, and keyboards; most if not all the faux strings are his keys). Mr. Prattcaught the correct mood for every varied tune here. He and Big Daddy sharein this collaboration of all things blues—from Mississippi delta to North Carolina,to Chicago, to big band, to 70’s soul, to jazz funk. “Blues Party” should getmuch airplay on WPFW. Big Daddy, you do rule.
